There is a discussion on the couple’s sexuality after remarriage, as well as one on children and stepchildren. Yet, there were plenty of chaplains and other clerks sympathetic to the plight of those who were widowed and supportive of their wish to remarry. The nineteenth century work of reconstructing white widows’ lives did not begin with the end of the Civil War but with the end of a life. The death of a man triggered immediate and pressing decisions. Widows not only were aware of the social capital they gained in widowhood but often used that capital for their own benefit during the war. Here, their ability to support the emotional regime of the Confederacy had real significance.
