The apparent tension between hierarchy and subsidiarity within the Catholic Church raises questions about how the Church applies a principle for which it has laid the foundations for the society. This article traces the history of the ecclesiastical foundations of the principle of subsidiarity and explores how this tension manifests itself within the institutional framework of the Church.
