AbstractIn times of ‘grand challenges’, design theorists dealing with complex systems are facing a dilemma: grand challenges require rule breaking, but they also require the preservation, as much as possible, of existing resources, systems, know-how and societal values. Design for transition calls not for ‘creative destruction’, but for ‘creative preservation’. How do we model a design process that involves ‘creative preservation’?Today, it is recognized that category/topos theory provides a solid foundation for modelling complex systems and their evolution in design processes. Category theory can account for a design process inside a given ‘theory of the object’, while topos theory and design theory can account for the phenomena whereby a design process is innovative to preserve the knowledge structure. At the heart of this creative preservation is sheafification. In this study, we analyse the sheafification process using design theory. First, we characterize sheafification from a design perspective. Next, we propose a very simple illustration involving the sheafification of an ordinal 2 category presheaf. Finally, we show how sheafification can be used to enable ‘creative preservation’ in specific complex systems.

A half century has elapsed since the appointment of an official body, the Nature Conservancy, in 1949, and the beginnings of what might be described as the modern nature conservation movement in the UK. Whilst ecologists perceived the 'heritage of wild nature' to be largely the outcome of past land use, and that the nature reserves would have to be managed consciously if their wildlife interest were to be sustained, there was only the most rudimentary understanding of how this might be achieved. Drawing for the most part on projects affecting wetlands, the paper illustrates the early steps taken to bring greater scientific rigour to reserve management. Whilst the potential for habitat restoration was recognized, there was little opportunity for its practice in the intensively-farmed countryside until grant aid was made available for such purpose from the agricultural budget in the 1980s. Where nature conservation had begun to subsume nature preservation, some fifty years ago, notions of 'creative conservation' have similarly encouraged reassessment of the purpose and practice of wildlife-resource management. This time however the challenge is being met in both the wider countryside and the built environment.

The transformation of the world economy is characterized by a change of emphasis from an industrial society to a society of knowledge and intelligence. This leads to the emergence of a new segment of the economy – the creative economy, which is essentially a symbiosis of culture, art and economy and it is based on creative human capital. The purpose of the academic paper is to study the features of the process of intellectualization, the role of human capital and its creative functions in a new type of economy based on intellectual activity. Methods. The basic methods used in the present research are as follows: statistical analysis, index and analytical methods, methods for estimating structural dynamic shifts, the method of comparisons. Along with this, the generally accepted methods of economic research have been also used, namely: the economic and statistical method and the method of economic and mathematical modeling (regression analysis) (in order to determine the impact of indicators characterizing the development of the creative sector of the economy on the level of GDP per capita), etc. Results. The importance of the creative economy in the development of the European countries and the role of human capital in the context of the formation of this economy sector has been updated. The essence of the category “development of human capital under the conditions of a creative economy” has been defined and its components have been specified. The features of the creative economy’s structure in the EU have been analyzed through the study of the dynamics of the number and structure of enterprises operating in the creative sphere. The number and the relative share of the population employed in the creative sector of the economy have been studied. The basic features of human capital development in European countries through the dynamics of the following indicators have been illustrated, namely: the coefficient of age dependence, life expectancy of the population, the risk of poverty, fully representing the social standards of the EU member states. In order to study the mutual interaction of the creative economy and human capital, a regression analysis has been performed. The basic components of development and preservation of human capital under the conditions of creative economy have been outlined.

Kata Kunci: Kolaborasi Kreatif, Konservasi Budaya, Taman Budaya Yogyakarta CREATIVE COLLABORATION OF TOURISM ACTIVITIES AND CULTURE PRESERVATION IN TAMAN BUDAYA YOGYAKARTA (TBY) ABSTRACTYogyakarta has potential capacity in developing it to be a creative city due to its being cultural, art, education, and tourism city. Today, the concept of creative city is often used in planning concepts to offer a way in solving social, cultural, and economic problems in a city whenever it concerns sustainable development and the most important factor in this issue is human beings who inhabit the city. Human beings, the people as a local community, are the soul that enables the creative city to be alive. Many studies show that interaction space plays an important role in a creative city as it is with this interaction that creative activities take place, and this is significant in developing city tourism. It is with this interaction that new ideas or new methods may appear. It is in this context that this research is conducted. It focuses on how a group of people create a collaborative work in cultural preservation and tourism. This interaction space is called Taman Budaya Yogyakarta (TBY). TBY, or Yogyakarta Culture Space, provides a space for communities to hold art and cultural events. With the objective of mapping the creative collaboration facilitated by TBY in the effort to preserve the culture, this research finds out the creative patterns in each aspect of cultural activities which bears cultural preservation and tourism aspects. The creativity patters appear in activity values, form, management and the role of the stakeholders. The creative collaboration is supported by dominant actors in providing the activities in TBY. TBY is therefore a driving factor in not only cultural preservation but also in tourism. Government role and people’s perception and motivation developing along with the development of information technology also contributes to the success of tourism creative collaboration and cultural preservation in TBY. Actualization of natural and cultural heritage is considered in an integrated approach: preservation/archiving and presentation through museum institutions (archives), including protected areas, and “transfer” of tangible objects and intangible values into real life to include them in the modern meaningful context. While the preservation and presentation of heritage has an extensive tradition and practice in museology, the methods and approaches of incorporating heritage into the contemporary context are constantly changing and being updated to reflect the current situation. The appeal to contemporary art as a method of heritage interpretation is based on its potential to use various methods, techniques and approaches from different disciplines: artistic research, interdisciplinary approach, etc. The specificity of protected areas in Russia as complex formations that combine multiple practices (scientific, educational, recreational, etc.) opens up the possibility of using a variety of formats for data interpretation, such as creative laboratories that include contemporary artistic research, interdisciplinary and social co-operation, and presentation of research results to a wide audience. As an example of such a laboratory, the study considers international art research projects implemented on the territory of the Divnogorye Museum-Reserve.

It aims to uncover how creative tourism strategies support community-based tourism by optimizing development through cultural preservation, heritage revitalization, and sustainable outcomes. The research investigates how creative tourism approaches foster community-based tourism and how a community achieves sustainable socio-economic growth using the Community Capitals Framework (CCF). Using a qualitative case study approach, this research employs in-depth interviews, participant and non-participant observation, and document analysis to explore the interactions between creative tourism, community-based tourism, and sustainability. The findings reveal that creative tourism strategies can promote environmental conservation, cultural preservation, economic empowerment, and social well-being in Ban Chiang. This study highlights the successful development of strategies and collaborative actions by Ban Chiang’s community enterprise network for creative tourism progression, emphasizing multilateral stakeholder collaboration in enhancing community capital. The research proposes a model for creative tourism strategy and community capital development aimed at sustainability. It provides valuable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and local communities aiming to leverage creative tourism for sustainable development. By emphasizing the synergies between creative tourism and community-based tourism, it offers practical guidance for enhancing destination management, fostering community engagement, and promoting cultural and environmental conservation. This study bridges a critical gap in the literature by demonstrating how the CCF can be implemented to create positive impacts on creative tourism in heritage destinations such as Ban Chiang, presenting novel insights into its potential as a driver for positive transformation.

Conservation science is born of an inherent conflict. On one hand it is based in science, an objective, value-free search for truth that leads to general laws, with no a priori desire for particular outcomes. On the other hand it is clearly driven by value–laden goals related to making the human–nature relationship an enduring one. In contrast to an objective science, particular outcomes – such as preservation of biodiversity and protection or restoration of functioning ecosystems – are clearly pursued in conservation. The result is a sometimes uncomfortable merging of two human endeavours – one objective and one value-laden – that are inherently antagonistic and can result in tension. To make this tension creative, rather than destructive, we need to understand how both components are necessary and synergistic in forming a complete conservation science.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe the music performance collection preserved in Eastern Washington University’s institutional repository (IR). This collection of recordings of student music performances is the result of an ongoing collaboration between the university?s library and music department, which serves to provide discoverability, preservation and access to a collection of student creative works, which had heretofore been a hidden collection. Design/methodology/approach This collection of student creative work was identified as a suitable project for the Eastern Washington University’s IR while it was still in the planning stages because it was identified as an existing need that the new IR could address. Much of the groundwork for the collaboration between the library and music department was completed prior to IR implementation. Thus, the library was ready to begin work on this collection once the IR was operational. Findings The student music performance collection has been a successful project for the IR, which benefits the music department by making student performances discoverable and accessible, and benefits the library by providing the opportunity to demonstrate that the then-new IR could support the university’s student-centered focus on teaching and learning. Originality/value While there is a growing body of literature on IRs emphasizing student work, there is little literature on music or other creative works’ collections in IRs, much less on creative works by students. This paper adds to the limited body of literature on student creative works in the IR by describing the development, implementation and lessons learned from the successful music performances collection.

AbstractThis paper outlines several outreach initiatives that the Proyecto de Investigación Arqueológico Regional Ancash (PIARA) established to address the challenges of heritage preservation at the prehistoric archaeological site and rural community of Hualcayán, located in rural highland Ancash, Peru. We discuss three projects—a heritage festival, a textile enterprise, and an oral history project—that were designed and executed through a collaboration between PIARA and the Hualcayán community. We find that these “co-creative” projects encourage local stakeholders to discover and define for themselves the value of both their ancient and modern heritage. Reflecting on the outcomes from these projects, we discuss the co-creative approach as an effective strategy for improving the preservation of archaeological remains and enhancing the livelihood of the modern community.

This article aims to analyze the position of Minangkabau dance creations as entertainment and as a preservation of Minangkabau local wisdom. In addition, this article introduces creative dance as a new culture for the people of West Sumatra which has an impact on preserving Minangkabau local wisdom. This study used a qualitative method where data was collected through interviews, observation and literature review of Minangkabau contemporary dance creations. The validity of the data was tested through triangulation and analyzed based on the phenomena contained in the Minangkabau creation dance and then verified. The results of the study found that the existence of Minangkabau creative dance today is a form of representation of Minangkabau local wisdom so that creative dance can be accepted by the Minangkabau people in West Sumatra. Minangkabau dance creations are in process of creation and cannot be separated from the acculturation and reconstruction of Minangkabau dance traditions that once existed. In turn, this creative dance can maintain the existence of Minangkabau traditional dance as a cultural heritage of the Minangkabau people. Dance created by Minangkabau during this period has a position as public entertainment and as a medium for preserving the local wisdom values of the Minangkabau people.

ABSTRACTFor historic property types such as archaeological sites and historic buildings, data recovery is often the main part of mitigation plans offered by federal agencies with undertakings that will destroy part or all of a cultural resource. In theory, by extracting important information before destruction, we recover some part of a historic resource's cultural value. In some situations, however, data recovery is impossible or otherwise undesirable, and “creative” or off-site mitigation measures are necessary to mitigate adverse effects. In such circumstances, the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation has accepted funding from federal agencies to create, implement, and enhance an online digital information system for cultural resources. This article describes the Washington Information System for Architectural and Archaeological Records Data (WISAARD) and provides an example of a federal agency funding WISAARD development as creative mitigation for the transfer of archaeological sites out of federal ownership. We discuss the benefits of such systems and address how their development meets preservation goals established by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.

Purpose – The preservation and curation of music with real-time or live electronics is challenging. The goal is not to preserve a recording of the performance but to keep the work alive by providing the means to re-perform them. The purpose of this paper is to present the theoretical and practical outcomes of the documentation, dissemination and preservation of compositions with real-time electronics (DiP-CoRE) project. Design/methodology/approach – The methodology combines methods stemming from work psychology and ergonomics with conceptual frameworks constructed according to grounded theory. Data were collected during a six months’ creative process. Subsequent interviews were conducted during confrontations with documents, including observational recordings, sketches and technical specifications. Findings – This paper demonstrates the relevance of the proposed documentation methodology for the preservation of contemporary music with live electronics, focussing on the notion of intelligibility. It brings into light the multiple perspective of the documentation of the activity in a multi-agent creative process, which encompasses what was done but also what could have been done. Research limitations/implications – The DiP-CoRE project bring to light connections between the notion of intelligibility, the thickness of the activity and boundary objects. The paper proposes further directions of research in order to embed the designed framework within digital repositories. Practical implications – The documentation methodology, designed and tested in this paper, proposes a framework for practitioners, building on video-stimulated recall as well as documents produced during the creative process. This framework requires less expertise (but a more important technical setup) than a traditional interview-based documentation framework. It thus provides opportunities for various size organizations to build methodical documentation processes and to further build on distributed expertise with computer-supported collaborative work. Originality/value – This paper proposes a new interdisciplinary documentation methodology relevant in the artistic domain, which brings together transmission with objects and by practice. It specifically defines the relation between this proposal and a high-level model for digital curation, namely, the mixed methods digital curation model. It further creates a link between documentation best practice and the ongoing research in the tracking of creative processes.

The Cambridge Preservation Project, sponsored by the British Library, showed that the problem was nationwide. In the 60-80’s of the XX century by the aid of the search work of art expert V. Svientsitska, B. Voznytskyi, V. Stetsko the art works of John George Pinzel were saved (? –1761). Thus, the sculptures and carved icons of the talented artist appeared in the museum collections of Galicia. Today, part of the creative heritage is stored in the holdings of two museums in Ternopil: Ternopil Regional Museum of Local Lore (TRMLL) and Ternopil Regional Museum of Art (TRMA). Only since the proclamation of Ukraine’s independence J. G. Pinzel’s heritage has become an object of study. We thank the director of the Lviv Art Gallery B. Voznytskyi for returning the name of the sculptor and his creative achievements to the field of interest of Ukrainian scientists. Afterwards, the figure of I. G. Pinzel became central in the writings of the Ternopil researcher V. Stetsko. Topicality of the article is conditioned by the need of studying the state of conservation of the creative heritage of J. G. Pinzel in the museums of Ternopil. The purpose of the article is to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the sculptor’s works in the collections of TRMLL and TRAM, to highlight cultural projects on the representation of the artist’s work with the assistance of museums. Today, six sculptures and three reliefs created by J. G. Pinzel in the 18th century for Buchach churches are stored in the museums of Ternopil. The first works of the artist came to the collection of TRMLL in 1978. In 1993, four works by J. G. Pinzel (sculptures: Saint Vincent a Paulo and Saint Francis Borgia; bas-reliefs: Miracle of Saint Nicholas and Beheading of John the Baptist were exhibited in TRMLL in the section “Culture of the Region of the end of the XVII – first half of the XIX century”. In January 2012, the exhibition opened to mark the 250th anniversary of the sculptor’s death. The project curator V. Stetsko represented 300 exhibits. Six sculptures and two bas-reliefs of the artist were exhibited in a separate hall. For the first time, four allegorical figures have been demonstrated: Allegory of Faith, Wisdom, Courage and Allegory of St. Tobias. In 2014, all the artist’s works were placed in a separate “John George Pinzel Hall”, decorated in Baroque style. Significant contribution to the preservation and promotion of the creative work of J. G. Pinzel belonged to Vira Stetsko (1956–2016), art expert, local historian, scientific associate of TRMLL. Her work “Pinzel and Ternopil Region” (2007) was published in Ternopil. V. Stetsko hypothesized, that J. G. Pinzel carved his portrait on the sculpture “Allegory of Courage”. TRMA plays a significant role in preserving J. G. Pinzel’s creative heritage. Today the collection of the institution contains only one work of the sculptor – the bas-relief “Road to Emmaus”. The masterpiece is presented in the hall of “Art of Ukraine” in the section of sacred art of Galicia. The TRMA exposition previously stored Deacon Doors from the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church Town of Buchach. The reliefs were known as Guardian Angel and Annunciation. Thereafter, at the request of the residents of Buchach, the directorate of the art museum was forced to transfer the monument of sacred art to the church. The creative heritage of J. G. Pinzel, stored in the collections of museums of Ternopil, is of particular relevance, since the artist’s achievements represent a close connection of Western Ukrainian lands with European culture. The masterpieces of the sculptor from the Ternopil museums were selected for the exhibition of works by J. G. Pinzel in The Louvre in 2012. Today, every visitor of Ternopil museums can learn about the genius of the sculptor J. G. Pinzel, who was able to combine artistic traditions of the Baroque style with the canon of local professional carving in his own works.

The Lopburi Archaeological Guitar Sonata is a musical composition that combines ancient Thai melodies with Western classical guitar skills, showcasing the core of Thai music culture while also incorporating inventive creativity. The composer meticulously researched and creatively explored to create a three-part work—exposition, development, and recapitulation—that highlights the cultural significance of Lopburi's archeological dance tunes. The sonata form is methodically constructed, with precise consideration given to tempo, rhythm, and key alterations, culminating in a captivating and expressive musical voyage. The composer drew inspiration from their early encounters with Thai musical instruments and a profound admiration for Thai melodies. The aim was to both preserve and promote Thai music culture while also exploring new frontiers in artistic expression. The Lopburi Archaeological Guitar Sonata serves as evidence of the profound impact of music, surpassing cultural barriers to ignite a newfound admiration for Thai musical traditions and establishing lasting cultural preservation for future generations.

From our point of view, morality is a systemic factor of social reality, because as high as social barriers in modern world may be, universal values do exist and preserve and they are exactly the things that give human society an opportunity to survive on a global scale.

Abstract Various entities offer to evaluate the adequacy of applications for urban waterfront development. This study focused on the underlying assumptions that gave a comprehensive review of urban waterfront development projects and applications and analysed user impressions in Kyrenia Ancient Harbour. Visitors to Kyrenia, including employees, employers, students, and creative people, were asked to complete a questionnaire. This study discovered that the twelve underlying factors of creative waterfronts included awareness of people, promotion of entrepreneurs, creative spaces and activities, innovation, tolerance, physical comfort, political support, social cohesion, diversity of function, economic contribution, and cultural preservation. An evaluation of the creative environment at Kyrenia Waterfront found various degrees of user participation based on several statistical tests. Most community members saw the example area favourably due to its distinctive urban characteristics and socialisation possibilities. Locals, however, believe that creative folks require new technologies and ideas to be more productive.
