Annotation:

Exploratory case studies investigated the day care benefit from the multiple perspectives of the person with dementia, caregiver, and day care worker. The routines, daily processes, and factors promoting benefit were reported. The day care client was also queried to explore their ability to contribute useful information about their care environment. The adult day care is primarily a social occasion for its clients, who enjoy the benefits of companionship and interaction. Day cares were differentiated by the environmental features: worker:client ratio, size, suitability of the site for intended purpose, quality of client-worker relationships, and quality of the activities offered. The quality of each of these features is an important component in the day care environment. All components at their highest quality are not necessary for the environment to be beneficial. The most important factors contributing to day care quality were workers who (1) communicated safety to the client through a relaxed, uncritical environment, and (2) facilitated client stimulation through activity and personal interaction, satisfying the clients’ basic needs to be safe and occupied. This evaluation was comprised of: two sets of case studies. Each evaluation was concurrently conducted and consistently designed. Participant observation and survey were the primary methods of data collection. Informed consent was sought from day care clients with dementia, family caregivers, and day care workers.

This study examined a neglected area in long term care and adult day care research: staff development. The specific purposes of this study were to describe the provision of a comprehensive staff development program in adult day care centers in Virginia in order to (a) differentiate those centers providing only the minimum required inservice training from those centers providing more comprehensive staff development programs and (b) define what meaning is placed upon staff education programs by center administrators. <p>A mail survey design was used for this study. The questionnaire developed for the study has three sections: (a) center characteristics, (b) staff characteristics, and (c) the meaning of staff development. Quantitative analysis was conducted on the first two sections while qualitative analysis was used to examine the final section. A conceptual model for adult day care staff development programs was also developed for the study. The model was used to compare the staff development programs across adult day care centers in Virginia. The sample included all licensed adult day care center administrators in Virginia (n=43). The total response rate for this survey was 88%. <p>Results were discussed in terms of the provision of staff development programs, as well as the meaning that was placed on staff development by the responding center administrators. The results showed that much importance is placed upon staff development programs by the center administrators and they follow through with this by providing a well rounded staff development program for their staff.<br>Master of Science

The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the perceptions of urban parents of two countries concerning standards of selected criteria of high quality standards of early childhood programs developed by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs (NAECP).Two hundred and forty nine parents ( U. S. = 129, Taiwan = 120) participated in the study. The effects of country, sex, and educational background were examined.The study was conducted by using the questionnaire survey. The instrument was constructed by the researcher based on the Accreditation Criteria and Procedures of the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs.A three-way.MANOVA on 10 dependent variables with independent factors of country, sex, and educational background was used to test Hypothesis I at the .05 level of significance. The Hypothesis I was rejected.To test Hypothesis II, a Spearman's Rho rank order correlation coefficient was computed using the mean ranks of the 10 criteria. Significance was examined at the .05 level. The Hypothesis II was accepted.These findings leading to the following conclusions:1. American and Taiwanese parents shared the similar perceptions that supported the quality standards developed by the NAECP. Most of the statistically differences that existed between American and Taiwanese parents were the differences of the degree of acceptance of the quality standards.2. The only criterion that caused parents' selections to lean toward negative responses was the staffing standards.3. Whenever there was a statistically significant difference between American and Taiwanese parents, the Taiwanese parents were always agreed more than the American parents.4. Regardless of factors of sex and educational background, both American and Taiwanese parents shared similar values in that they ranked health-and-safety and teacher-child interactions as the first or second important factors.5. Regardless of the factors of sex and educational background, both American and Taiwanese parents shared the same values in that they ranked administration and evaluations as the two least important factors when selecting an early childhood program for their children.<br>Department of Elementary Education

碩士<br>東海大學<br>社會工作學系<br>94<br>The purpose of the present study was to investigate the frequency of participation, participant constraints, and participant satisfaction of elderly during the recreational activities in day care centers located in Taichung city. In the present study, the effective questionnaires of 148 continuous participators and 9 discontinuous participators were collected employing a census method. Results indicated as follows: (1) frequency of participation in all types of activities was 84%, and the highest rate of participating was the activities for health promotion; (2) the most powerful deterrent to participation was structural constraints; (3) both the continuous and discontinuous participators faced the time factor as a major structural constraints during participation. The absence of time as a temporary reason of discontinued participators during participation. In the Contrast, the continuous participators were interrupted due to permanent factors; (4) the degree of participant satisfaction of continuous participators was higher than discontinuous participators (3.78% verse 3.33%). Furthermore, both of the two categories of participators rated higher satisfaction score on social, relaxational, and aesthetic dimensions than other dimensions; (5) the continuous participators rated the highest satisfaction score on the activities for health promotion and followed by activities for entertainment; (6) finally, the relation among mentioned three main variables was analyzed. According to the result, relation between participation and participant constraints was showed a negative relation. The author also pointed out several suggestions on policy, practical, and academic felids.

碩士<br>美和科技大學<br>護理系健康照護碩士班<br>107<br>Background: Skeletal muscles decline with age; this occurs commonly in older adults, especially those who are frail. This study investigated the ratio of older adults with sarcopenia among those who lived in long-term care centers, and investigated the relationships of sarcopenia indicators with nutritional status and physical activities. Methods: This study adopted a cross-sectional study design and selected 150 older adults from six long-term care centers in Kaohsiung and pingtung as the study participants; cases from Aug. 1, 2018 to Dec. 31, 2018 were obtained. This study employed the standard established Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia in 2014 to determine whether the participants were diagnosed with sarcopenia. The case data collected consisted of the participants’ demographic information, sarcopenia indicators, nutritional status, and physical activities, where their sarcopenia indicators included their limb muscle mass, hand grip strength, and 6-meter walking speed; their nutritional status entailed their body mass index (BMI); and their physical activities involved those measured by the activities of daily living (ADL) scale and those measured by the physical activity scale for the elderly, Chinese version (PASE-C). Results: The 110 participants were aged 65–100 years, and their average age was 81.92; 78% of the participants were aged 75 years, and 73.3% were male; 66%) of the participants were diagnosed with hypertension, and 29.3% (44 participants) with diabetes. A total of 12% of the participants were underweight (BMI < 18.5), and 54% of them were listed as moderately or heavily dependent on their caregivers according to the ADL scores; most of the participants preferred performing static or mild activities. Approximately 62.71% of the participants were diagnosed with sarcopenia, while the prevalence of sarcopenia in female and male were 55% and 47.27%, respectively. A multiple regression analysis showed that women, those with osteoporosis, and those with low BMI had less skeletal muscles; women, those who were older, and those who had low BMI had weaker skeletal muscle strength than the other participants; and those with low ADL and/or PASE-C scores displayed poorer body functions than other participants. Conclusion: In this study, 60% of the participants had sarcopenia, and the results showed that being female, osteoporosis, low BMI, increased age, low ADL scores, and low PASE-C scores were risk factors of sarcopenia. The study results can serve as references to relevant units when providing health care to older adults, thereby improving their health.

In this study an ecosystemic and social constructionist approach is used to understand the meanings and perceptions held by working mothers in relation to their experiences with the childcare and organisation settings. These meanings are described in terms of the influence of wider social discourses, personal epistemological assumptions, tacit knowledge, past experiences and current contexts. The working mothers, together with the researcher, form a linguistic system in which meanings about motherhood, employer-support and childcare arrangements are co-constructed and shared. The relationships between the working mothers and the researcher are not only observed within a linguistic context, but also within the ecosystemic view of mutual reciprocity, self-referentiality and double description. A qualitative and naturalistic research methodology is followed to describe the emergent design and the grounded theory. Based on the qualitative paradigm, the conclusions drawn at the end of the study are idiographic and reflective.<br>Psychology<br>M.A.(Clinical Psychology)
