Diderma is one of the most abundant species in Myxomycetes. Based on the study of morphology and phylogeny, two new species—Diderma liaoningensis (is characterized by grouped sporocarps, the sporocyst with dehiscence lines, capillitium with large brown swelling, spore encircled by a pale line) and Diderma verrucocapillitia (is characterized by depressed plasmodiocarps, verrucose capillitium, red-brown spores)—collected from Liaoning province and Jilin province were introduced. Detailed descriptions and illustrations are presented as well as comparisons to similar species. Phylogenetic analyses were carried out using Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian inference based on small subunit ribosomal RNA sequences (SSU rRNA) of Diderma and related genera. These analyses confirmed the placement of two new species in the genus Diderma. A key to 19 species of Diderma from China is also provided. Holotype specimens have been housed in the Herbarium of the Mycological Institute of Jilin Agricultural University (HMJAU), Changchun, China.

Annotation:
Lyme disease is the leading tick-borne infection in the United States, caused by the pathogenic spirochete Borreliella burgdorferi, formerly known as Borrelia burgdorferi. Diderms, or bacteria with dual-membrane ultrastructure, such as B. burgdorferi, have multiple methods of transporting and integrating outer membrane proteins (OMPs). Most integral OMPs are transported through the β-barrel assembly machine (BAM) complex. This complex consists of the channel-forming OMP BamA and accessory lipoproteins that interact with the five periplasmic, polypeptide transport-associated (POTRA) domains of BamA. Another system, the translocation and assembly module (TAM) system, has also been implicated in OMP assembly and export. The TAM system consists of two proteins, the BamA paralog TamA which has three POTRA domains and the inner membrane protein TamB. TamB is characterized by a C-terminal DUF490 domain that interacts with the POTRA domains of TamA. Interestingly, while TamB is found in almost all diderms, including B. burgdorferi, TamA is found almost exclusively in Proteobacteria. This strongly suggests a TamA-independent role of TamB in most diderms. We previously demonstrated that BamA interacts with TamB in B. burgdorferi and hypothesized that this is facilitated by the BamA POTRA domains interacting with the TamB DUF490 domain. In this study, we utilized protein-protein co-purification assays to empirically demonstrate that the B. burgdorferi TamB DUF490 domain interacts with BamA POTRA2 and POTRA3. We also observed that the DUF490 domain of TamB interacts with the accessory lipoprotein BamB. To examine if the BamA-TamB interaction is more ubiquitous among diderms, we examined BamA-TamB interactions in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (St). Interestingly, even though St encodes a TamA protein that interacts with TamB, we observed that the TamB DUF490 of St interacts with BamA in this organism. Our combined findings strongly suggest that the TamB-BamA interaction occurs independent of the TamA component of the TAM protein export system.

Two specimens of a rare species Diderma aurantiacum collected in the Sikhote-Alin Nature Reserve and the territory of the Land of the Leopard National Park (Primorye Territory, Russian Federation) were found during revision of the myxomycete collection of the Mycological herbarium of the Komarov Botanical Institute (LE). These specimens are the first records of this species outside the Japanese islands. Diderma aurantiacum is characterized by a thick cartilaginous peridium of dull orange color that breaks into petal-like fragments during dehiscence, a small hemispherical columella, weakly branched dark capillitial threads with pale tips, and warted spores with darker warts arranged in small groups. The color photographs of sporocarp structures and SEM images of spores and capillitium are published for the first time. The partial nucleotide sequences of nrSSU (18S rDNA) and EF1α genes of specimens from the Russian Far East differed clearly from these of other Diderma species.

Myxomycetes (plasmodial slime moulds) are best known from temperate and boreal forests, where they are commonly found in association with decaying coarse woody debris and leaf litter on the forest floor (Martin & Alexopoulos 1969). There have been only a few reports of myxomycetes from either the continent of Antarctica or the subantarctic islands. In what apparently represents the first record of a myxomycete from the south polar region, Horak (1966) described a new species, Diderma antarcticolum Horak, from material collected on the Antarctic Peninsula (64°53′S, 62°53′W). Later, Ing & Smith (1980,1983) reported Didymium dubium Rost., Lamproderma arcyrioides (Sommerf.) Rost., Stemonitopsis (Comatricha) subcaespitosa (Peck) Nann.- Brem. and Diderma niveum (Rost.) Macbr. from South Georgia (54–55°S, 36–38°W). They also indicated that the latter species was known from Signy Island, South Orkney Islands (60°43′S, 45°36′W) and the Antarctic Peninsula (65°16′S, 64°08′W) as well as South Georgia.

Nivicolous myxomycetes were collected from alpine areas of south-eastern Australia during the period of middle to late October 2004. Most collections came from the high-elevation area around Mount Kosciuszko, the highest peak on the continent at 2228 m, in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, and additional collections were obtained from two areas, Mount Buller and Mount Hotham, in the Victorian Alps of northern Victoria. Approximately 300 collections were obtained during a period of 2 weeks, including species such as Diderma alpinum, Didymium dubium, Lamproderma ovoideum, Physarum albescens and P. alpinum, not previously known to occur in mainland Australia. Lamproderma maculatum and L. zonatum were collected for the first time in the southern hemisphere, and another species of Lamproderma was described as new to science in a previous paper. In contrast to most other areas of the world where nivicolous myxomycetes have been studied, species of Diderma have been represented poorly among the collections from Australia.

Myxomycetes are an important component of terrestrial ecosystems, and in order to understand their diversity and phylogenetic relationships, taxonomic issues need to be addressed. In our 1985–2021 biodiversity investigations in Shaanxi Province, Jilin Province, the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Hubei Province, and Henan Province, China, Diderma samples were observed on rotten leaves, rotten branches, and dead wood. The samples were studied, based on morphological features coupled with multigene phylogenetic analyses of nSSU, EF-1α, and COI sequence data, which revealed two new species (Diderma shaanxiense sp. nov. and D. clavatocolumellum sp. nov.) and two known species (D. radiatum and D. globosum). In addition, D. radiatum and D. globosum were newly recorded in Henan Province and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, respectively. The paper includes comprehensive descriptions, detailed micrographs, and the outcomes of phylogenetic analyses for both the newly discovered and known species. Additionally, it offers morpho-logical comparisons between the new species and similar ones.

Arecaceae plants provide favorable microhabitats for the development of myxomycetes, but researches focusing on myxomycetes associated with palm trees are scarce. The myxobiota present on Cocos nucifera L. was evaluated in coconut groves in the municipality of Bonito, Pernambuco, Brazil. The incidence of myxomycetes on coconut palms and substrates and their composition, richness, taxonomic diversity, constancy, abundance, and seasonality of sporulation were analyzed. During direct field collections, inspections were made of the stems, leaf sheaths, inflorescence bracts, and petiole bases of 60 adult individuals. Myxomycetes were present in 80% of the coconut palms and were more abundant during the rainy season (June). A total of 128 specimens were obtained (63% from leaf sheaths, 31% from stems, 4% from petiole bases, and 2% from bracts), representing 14 species, with species/genus ratio = 2.80. Hemitrichia serpula, Physarum decipiens and Diderma effusum characterize the myxobiota. This work presents the first record of Diderma chondrioderma, Didymium clavus, Physarum crateriforme and P. roseum on C. nucifera for Brazil. The very nature of the last bacterial common ancestor (LBCA), in particular the characteristics of its cell wall, is a critical issue to understand the evolution of life on earth. Although knowledge of the relationships between bacterial phyla has made progress with the advent of phylogenomics, many questions remain, including on the appearance or disappearance of the outer membrane of diderm bacteria (also called Gram-negative bacteria). The phylogenetic transition between monoderm (Gram-positive bacteria) and diderm bacteria, and the associated peptidoglycan expansion or reduction, requires clarification. Herein, using a phylogenomic tree of cultivated and characterized bacteria as an evolutionary framework and a literature review of their cell-wall characteristics, we used Bayesian ancestral state reconstruction to infer the cell-wall architecture of the LBCA. With the same phylogenomic tree, we further revisited the evolution of the division and cell-wall synthesis (dcw) gene cluster using homology- and model-based methods. Finally, extensive similarity searches were carried out to determine the phylogenetic distribution of the genes involved with the biosynthesis of the outer membrane in diderm bacteria. Quite unexpectedly, our analyses suggest that all cultivated and characterized bacteria might have evolved from a common ancestor with a monoderm cell-wall architecture. If true, this would indicate that the appearance of the outer membrane was not a unique event and that selective forces have led to the repeated adoption of such an architecture. Due to the lack of phenotypic information, our methodology cannot be applied to all extant bacteria. Consequently, our conclusion might change once enough information is made available to allow the use of an even more diverse organism selection.

Auranofin (AF) is a gold-based compound with a well-known pharmacological and toxicological profile, currently used in the treatment of some severe forms of rheumatoid arthritis. Over the last twenty years, AF has also been repurposed as antiviral, antitumor, and antibacterial drug. In this review we focused on the antibacterial properties of AF, specifically researching the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of AF in both mono- and diderm bacteria reported so far in literature. AF proves to be highly effective against monoderm bacteria, while diderm are far less susceptible, probably due to the outer membrane barrier. We also reported the current mechanistic hypotheses concerning the antimicrobial properties of AF, although a conclusive description of its antibacterial mode of action is not yet available. Even if its mechanism of action has not been fully elucidated yet and further studies are required to optimize its delivery strategy, AF deserves additional investigation because of its unique mode of action and high efficacy against a wide range of pathogens, which could lead to potential applications in fighting antimicrobial resistance and improving therapeutic outcomes in infectious diseases.

<p>The Dream of the Pacific: Bio-Politics and Sexuality in Denis Diderot&rsquo;s <em>Suppl&eacute;ment au voyage de Bougainville</em></p><p>An important issue in the economic debates of the eighteenth century was the concern that the advanced Europeans nations were facing a decline in population. It was assumed that this would have considerable consequences for the economic and military strength of countries like France and England. The idea that the decline was an effect of the European countries&rsquo; advanced state of civilisation was widespread; accordingly, explorers like James Cook and Louis Antoine de Bougainville were eager to examine the ways in which the societies and cultures they encountered organised sexual reproduction. Informed by the travelers&rsquo; accounts, and recognising the possible insights these offered for the challenges France was facing, Denis Diderot&rsquo;s <em>Suppl&eacute;ment au voyage de Bougainville</em> analyses and discusses the sexual mores of the inhabitants of Tahiti. Taking as its starting point the oblique and slightly idiosyncratic way in which the French philosopher addresses the issue &mdash; in the form of an apocryphal &ldquo;supplement&rdquo; to Bougainville&rsquo;s account supposedly written by the explorer himself &mdash; this essay analyses the way in which Diderot transforms an ethnographic reflection on Polynesian culture into an analysis of the pathologies of his contemporary France from the double perspective of economy and ethics.</p>

Two new myxomycetes from subtropical forests of China, Arcyria aeruginosa sp. nov. and Diderma subochraceum sp. nov., are described and illustrated. Arcyria aeruginosa occurred on rotten stem of bamboo and differs from all known species of the genus in having dense spines on inner surface of cups. The diagnostic feature of D. subochraceum is single-layered peridium which dehisces by longitudinal or stellate slit. Preliminary phylogenetic analyses based on partial 18S rDNA sequences support the establishment of the two new species. Additionally, Didymium saturnus H.W. Keller and Fuligo luteonitens L.G. Krieglst. & Nowotny are reported from China for the first time.

Jahrhunderts u. a. in der Malerei Goyas hervortritt. Studies in 18th century poetics and aesthetics of the monstrous have so far been concerned almost exclusively with the paradigm of ›feminine imagination.‹ This paper, in turn, focuses on Holbach’s and Diderot’s theories of ›monstrogenesis‹, which articulate a radical break with the model of imagination, similarity and authorship. One of their most interest- ing aesthetic consequences is the new thinking of monstrosity as it appears at the end of the 18th century in Goya’s paintings. "

Diderm bacteria, characterized by an additional lipid membrane layer known as the outer membrane, fold their outer membrane proteins (OMPs) via the β-barrel assembly machinery (BAM) complex. Understanding how the BAM complex, particularly its key component BamA, assists in OMP folding remains crucial in bacterial cell biology. Recent research has focused primarily on the structural and functional characteristics of BamA within the Gracilicutes clade, such as in <i>Escherichia coli</i> (<i>E. coli</i>). However, another major evolutionary branch, Terrabacteria, has received comparatively less attention. An example of a Terrabacteria is <i>Deinococcus radiodurans</i> (<i>D. radiodurans</i>), a Gram-positive bacterium that possesses a distinctive outer membrane structure. In this study, we first demonstrated that the β-barrel domains of BamA are not interchangeable between <i>D. radiodurans</i> and <i>E. coli</i>. The structure of <i>D. radiodurans</i> BamA was subsequently determined at 3.8 Å resolution using cryo-electron microscopy, revealing obviously distinct arrangements of extracellular loop 4 (ECL4) and ECL6 after structural comparison with their counterparts in gracilicutes. Despite the overall similarity in the topology of the β-barrel domain, our results indicate that certain ECLs have evolved into distinct structures between the Terrabacteria and Gracilicutes clades. While BamA and its function are generally conserved across diderm bacterial species, our findings underscore the evolutionary diversity of this core OMP folder among bacteria, offering new insights into bacterial physiology and evolutionary biology.

How organisms develop into specific shapes is a central question in biology. The maintenance of bacterial shape is connected to the assembly and remodelling of the cell envelope. In endospore-forming bacteria, the pre-spore compartment (the forespore) undergoes morphological changes that result in a spore of defined shape, with a complex, multi-layered cell envelope. However, the mechanisms that govern spore shape remain poorly understood. Here, using a combination of fluorescence microscopy, quantitative image analysis, molecular genetics and transmission electron microscopy, we show that SsdC (formerly YdcC), a poorly-characterized new member of the MucB / RseB family of proteins that bind lipopolysaccharide in diderm bacteria, influences spore shape in the monoderm Bacillus subtilis. Sporulating cells lacking SsdC fail to adopt the typical oblong shape of wild-type forespores and are instead rounder. 2D and 3D-fluorescence microscopy suggest that SsdC forms a discontinuous, dynamic ring-like structure in the peripheral membrane of the mother cell, near the mother cell proximal pole of the forespore. A synthetic sporulation screen identified genetic relationships between ssdC and genes involved in the assembly of the spore coat. Phenotypic characterization of these mutants revealed that spore shape, and SsdC localization, depend on the coat basement layer proteins SpoVM and SpoIVA, the encasement protein SpoVID and the inner coat protein SafA. Importantly, we found that the ΔssdC mutant produces spores with an abnormal-looking cortex, and abolishing cortex synthesis in the mutant largely suppresses its shape defects. Thus, SsdC appears to play a role in the proper assembly of the spore cortex, through connections to the spore coat. Collectively, our data suggest functional diversification of the MucB / RseB protein domain between diderm and monoderm bacteria and identify SsdC as an important factor in spore shape development.

In such a specific microhabitat as litter 33 taxa were found, and among them abundant occurrence of <i>Diachea leucopodia</i> and <i>Diderma testaceum</i> was conspicuous. Dependence of the occurrence of myxomycetes on climatic conditions is manifeted by various periods of "fructification" of particular species. August and September were the most favourable months (49 taxa each) while July was the worst one (30 taxa). Slime moulds inhabiting litter had their maximum from June to August.
