Lehmhaus focuses on the variegated forms and functions of lists in Jewish textual traditions from late antiquity, commonly known as rabbinic or talmudic literature. As he shows, Rabbinic works deploy lists for different discursive purposes-- exegetical, homiletical, narrative-- embedded in their ancient Near Eastern surroundings and based on a long tradition derived from biblical and other ancient Jewish traditions. Lehmhaus argues that rabbinic texts deploy the versatility or affordance of the list not only for ordering knowledge but also for the very process of knowledge turning them into a powerful ‘epistemic genre’. He suggests that rabbinic authors may have arrived at certain conclusions precisely in and through lists in which specific concepts or taxonomies were tried out before becoming more manifest or substantiated. Legal definitions organize legal texts; they create new legal concepts and clarify general language words for maximum precision. As such, they are subject to rigid drafting constraints. A comparative analysis of definitions (in common law, continental law, and that of the European Union) reveals various semantic, stylistic, text, or discursive conventions which mirror the differences between legal systems and legal cultures. The analysis integrates tools and selected methodologies from linguistics, legal theory, legal logic, logical semiotics, and comparative law. The point of reference will be the Anglo-Saxon, EU, and Polish legislative drafting guidelines. Model definitions are presented. A focus on the formulation of definitions across legal systems and cultures can contribute to the systematization of knowledge on definitions in law.

AbstractThis chapter explores intertwinements between digital media and communicative and socio-cultural practices as they emerge in relation to contemporary cultures, specifically youth cultures. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok are discursive-operative networks within a framework of economic strategies. The chapter’s empirical approach draws on the assumption that young people’s aesthetic practices, transmitted via social media formats, evoke in each instance specific relational modes that preform a space of possible subject positions. The chapter summarises the findings of two selective longitudinal studies examining young people’s practices of self-articulation, consistently interpreted in the context of the specific platform used in each instance. These findings point to the potential of aesthetic-tentative practices as performed by young people to catalyse societal critique.

AbstractThis chapter is fundamentally concerned with production cultures as a central object of the industry discourse on quality drama, and it focuses in particular on screenwriting. The practitioners considered this early phase to be a cornerstone of quality and discussed deficits in this regard. First, chapter 8 discusses the economic framework conditions of screenwriting. Subsequently, it elaborates on how producers negotiated the writers’ room and describes writers’ room practices in the German industry, including obstacles posed by its production cultures. The third part of the chapter focuses on practical and discursive approaches to the “showrunner”, the leader in the series production process who is responsible for both business and creativity and usually coordinates the writers’ room. The showrunner is a particular example of changes in series production in Germany and in discussions about hierarchies in script development. The fourth part looks more closely at the industry discourse regarding the agency of screenwriters. In addition to illuminating their traditional marginalisation, this final part investigates the often complicated relationship between director and writer.

The paper deals with discursive tonality of conceptualization of reason in the Russian language and culture. Everyday network tonality describes reason as ability to think which manifests itself in the opposition of reason and stupidity. Edificatory discourse tonality consists in recommendation to be smart and take into account one's own reason, to value wisdom but at the same time see the limits of human intelligence, to know the benefit of reason but be aware that it may be used to harm other people. A poetic tonality focuses mainly on the opposition of mechanical reason and living feeling.
