The daily variation in background light intensity (irradiance) can entrain the endogenous clock in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) to the external environment. The only source of this photic information in mammals is the eye, which is primarily a visual organ. It is therefore highly specialised to detect high frequency spatiotemporal modulations. When cultured ex situ, the growth performance of corals can be influenced by several physical, chemical and biological parameters. Plants that develop under foliar shade encounter both low photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and low red to far red ratios (R:FR). Both of these factors are important in determining developmental responses to shade.
