Fishes are intriguing creatures that live in a wide range of aquatic settings, including freshwater rivers and lakes, oceans, and deep-sea trenches. Freshwater fish are considered a poor man's protein supplement since they are readily available in lakes, rivers, natural ponds, rice fields, beels, and fisheries. Many freshwater fish species resemble one another, making it difficult to classify them based on their exterior appearance. Manual fish species identification is always error-prone since it requires knowledge. Recently, computer vision and deep learning have played a key role in underwa

Oceans have been warming at an unprecedented rate over the last few decades and climate change is having profound effects on biodiversity and other ecosystem services that oceans provide for human well-being. The motivation for this report is a strong need to understand the consequences of climate change on aquatic ecosystems to develop strategies to minimize the impact on fished species, fisheries and society. The introduction and first chapters of the report are based on a literature review, which summarizes the current state of knowledge about climate change in the Swedish marine and coasta

Understanding fish movement and response in relation to their environment near infrastructure and migratory barriers is crucial for developing sustainable fisheries management solutions. Intermediate-scale movement models are a contemporary approach for understanding and predicting movement patterns of riverine fish considering their changing environment, which is predominately water flow. These models can be complex and require interdisciplinary knowledge. For more than 60 years, different approaches have been developed for investigating, reproducing, and predicting the movement outcomes of f

Herons and egrets commonly cause damage at aquaculture facilities and recreational fishing waters where fish are held at high densities. Fish-eating birds also can have an impact on intensively managed sport fisheries. Damage occurs when herons and egrets feed on fish purchased and released for recreational sport fishing activities. Values of these fish can be quite high given the intensity of management activities and the direct relationship of fishery quality to property value. Herons and egrets are freshwater or coastal birds of the family Ardeidae. Herons and egrets discussed in this secti

An aquatic analysis of constructing borrow areas adjacent to the main line levees in the Lower Mississippi River was conducted as part of an Environmental Impact Statement for upgrading the levee system. A Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) regression model based on field collections was developed to predict fish species richness as a function of the morphometry and water quality of borrow areas. The HSI score was multiplied by acres of borrow areas created during construction to obtain habitat units (HUs) for each alternative indicating a substantial gain of fishery habitat in the floodplain.
