Abstract The pioneering French doctor Françoise Entz Légey (1876-1935) devoted her career in Algeria and Morocco to women's healthcare. Much acclaimed in her lifetime, and remembered today largely for her two books on Moroccan folklore, Légey established in Marrakesh a maternity hospital and a milk dispensary. She also embarked on a plan to instruct “modern” midwives to replace indigenous matrones and sages-femmes, known in Arabic as qablas. The essential oil of the leaves of Pistacia lentiscus, collected from the middle Atlas in Morocco, was analyzed by GC and GC–MS. Altogether 43 components in concentrations of more than 0.2% were identified representing 97.4% of the oil composition. The main constituents were germanicol (12.8%), thunbergol (8.8%), himachalene (7.4%), trans-squalene (6.7%), terpinyl propionate (6.7%), 3,3-dimenthol (6.2%) and cadina-1.4-diene (5.1%). The oils showed strong activity against Klebsiella pneumonia, but no activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Background: Buxus sempervirens L. is a medicinal plant with several beneficial effects on health and is widely used in Moroccan folklore as an antidiabetic plant. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the antidiabetic effect of both aglycone and glycoside flavonoid enriched extracts of this plant in the experimental diabetic state. Methods: In the current work, the effect of aglycone and glycoside flavonoid-enriched extracts from the leaves of Buxus sempervirens L. (AFBS and GFBS) (10 mg/kg) on blood glucose levels has been evaluated in normal and streptozotocin (STZ) diabetic rats.
