On the evening of 23 June 2016 around 18:00 UTC, a mesoscale convective system (MCS) with hail and wind gusts passed the southern province Noord-Brabant in the Netherlands, and caused 675 millions of euros damage. This study evaluates the performance of the Weather Research and Forecasting model with three cumulus parameterisation schemes (Betts–Miller–Janjic, Grell–Freitas and Kain–Fritsch) on a grid spacing of 4 km in the ‘grey-zone’ and with explicitly resolved convection at 2 and 4 km grid spacing. The results of the five experiments are evaluated against observations of accumulated rainfall, maximum radar reflectivity, the CAPE evolution and wind speed. The results show that the Betts–Miller–Janjic scheme is activated too early and can therefore not predict any MCS over the region of interest. The Grell–Freitas and Kain–Fritsch schemes do predict an MCS, but its intensity is underestimated. With the explicit convection, the model is able to resolve the storm, though with a delay and an overestimated intensity. We also study whether spatial uncertainty in soil moisture is scaled up differently using parameterised or explicitly resolved convection. We find that the uncertainty in soil moisture distribution results in larger uncertainty in convective activity in the runs with explicit convection and the Grell–Freitas scheme, while the Kain–Fritsch and Betts–Miller–Janjic scheme clearly present a smaller variability.

ABSTRACT Accurate tropical cyclone (TC) track forecasts depend on having skillful numerical model predictions of the environmental wind field. Given that wind and temperature are related through thermal wind balance, structural errors in the processes that determine the tropical temperature profile, such as shallow convection, can therefore lead to biases in TC position. This paper evaluates the influence of shallow convection on Advanced Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting Model (AHW) TC track forecasts by cycling an ensemble data assimilation during a 1-month period in 2008 where cumulus convection is parameterized on the coarse-resolution domain using the Kain–Fritsch scheme or the modified Tiedtke scheme, which contains a more appropriate treatment of oceanic shallow convection. Short-term forecasts with the Kain–Fritsch scheme are characterized by a 1-K, 700-hPa temperature bias over much of the western Atlantic Ocean, which is attributed to a lack of shallow convection within that scheme. In turn, the horizontal gradients in this temperature bias are associated with wind biases in the region where multiple TCs move during this period. By contrast, the Tiedtke scheme does not suffer from this temperature bias, thus the wind biases are smaller. AHW forecasts initialized from the data assimilation system that uses the Tiedtke scheme have track errors that are up to 25% smaller than forecasts initialized from the data assimilation system that uses Kain–Fritsch.

Abstract A quasi balance with respect to parcel buoyancy at cloud base between destabilizing processes and convection is imposed as a constraint on convective cloud-base mass flux in a modified version of the Kain–Fritsch cumulus parameterization. Supporting evidence is presented for this treatment, showing a cloud-base quasi balance (CBQ) on a time scale of approximately 1–3 h in explicit simulations of deep convection over the U.S. Great Plains and over the tropical Pacific Ocean with the Naval Research Laboratory’s Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPS).1 With the exception of the smaller of two convective events in the Great Plains simulation, a CBQ is still observed upon restriction of the data analysis to instances where the available buoyant energy (ABE) exceeds a threshold value of 1000 J kg−1. This observation is consistent with the view that feedbacks between convection and cloud-base parcel buoyancy can control the rate of convection on shorter time scales than those associated with the elimination of buoyant energy and supports the addition of a CBQ constraint to the Kain–Fritsch mass-flux closure. Tests of the modified Kain–Fritsch scheme in single-column-model simulations based on the explicit three-dimensional simulations show a significant improvement in the representation of the main convective episodes, with a greater amount of convective rainfall. The performance of the scheme in COAMPS precipitation forecast experiments over the continental United States is also investigated. Improvements are obtained with the modified scheme in skill scores for middle to high rainfall rates.

Abstract. The Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF), like other numerical models, can make use of several parameterization schemes. The purpose of this study is to determine how available cumulus parameterization (CP) and microphysics (MP) schemes in the WRF model simulate extreme precipitation events in the Basque Country. Possible combinations among two CP schemes (Kain–Fritsch and Betts–Miller–Janjic) and five MP (WSM3, Lin, WSM6, new Thompson and WDM6) schemes were tested. A set of simulations, corresponding to 21st century extreme precipitation events that have caused significant flood episodes have been compared with point observational data coming from the Basque Country Automatic Weather Station Mesonetwork. Configurations with Kain–Fritsch CP scheme produce better quantity of precipitation forecast (QPF) than BMJ scheme configurations. Depending on the severity level and the river basin analysed different MP schemes show the best behaviours, demonstrating that there is not a unique configuration that solve exactly all the studied events.

Abstract. The mesoscale meteorological model MM5 is applied to 22 selected days with intense precipitation in the region of Epirus, NW Greece. At first, it was investigated whether and to what extend an increased horizontal resolution (from 8 to 2 km) improves the quantitative precipitation forecasts. The model skill was examined for the 12-h accumulated precipitation recorded at 14 meteorological stations located in Epirus and by using categorical and descriptive statistics. Then, the precipitation forecast skill for the 2 km grid was studied: (a) without and (b) with the activation of a convective parameterization scheme. From the above study, the necessity of the use of a scheme at the 2 km grid is assessed. Furthermore, three different convective parameterization schemes are compared: (a) Betts-Miller, (b) Grell and (c) Kain-Fritsch-2 in order to reveal the scheme, resulting in the best precipitation forecast skill in Epirus. Kain-Fritsch-2 and Grell give better results with the latter being the best for the high precipitation events.

Abstract In this study the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU–NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5) version 3.5.2 was used to simulate the Indian summer monsoon during the two contrasting years of 1987 and 1988, a dry year and a wet year, respectively. Three different convection parameterization schemes of Betts–Miller–Janjic, Kain–Fritsch, and Grell were used to study the sensitivity of monsoon to cumulus effects. The model was integrated for a period of 6 months, starting from three different initial conditions of 0000 UTC on 1, 2, and 3 May of each year using the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis data as input. The 6-hourly reanalysis data were used to provide the lateral boundary conditions, and the observed weekly Reynolds sea surface temperature, linearly interpolated to 6 h, was used as the lower boundary forcing. The results show that all three cumulus schemes were able to simulate the interannual and intraseasonal variabilities in the monsoon with reasonable accuracy. However, the spatial distribution of the rainfall and its quantity were different in all the schemes. The Grell scheme underestimated the rainfall in both the years. The Kain–Fritsch scheme simulated the observed rainfall well during July and August, the peak monsoon months, of the year 1988 but overestimated the rainfall in June and September of 1988 and throughout the monsoon season of 1987. The Betts–Miller–Janjic scheme simulated less rainfall in the drought year of 1987 and overestimated the rainfall in June and July of 1988. The circulation patterns simulated by the Betts–Miller–Janjic and Kain–Fritsch schemes are comparable to the observed patterns.

This study investigates the performance of the latest version of RegCM4 in simulating summer precipitation over South Korea, comparing nine sensitivity experiments with different combinations of convective parameterization schemes (CPSs) between land and ocean. In addition to the gross pattern of seasonal and monthly mean precipitation, the northward propagation of the intense precipitation band and statistics from extreme daily precipitation are thoroughly evaluated against gridded and in situ station observations. The comparative analysis of 10-year simulations demonstrates that no CPS shows superiority in both quantitative and qualitative aspects. Furthermore, a nontrivial discrepancy among the different observation datasets makes a robust assessment of model performance difficult. Regardless of the CPS over the ocean, the simulations with the Kain–Fritsch scheme over land show a severe dry bias, whereas the simulations with the Tiedtke scheme over land suffer from a limited accuracy in reproducing spatial distributions due to the excessive orographic precipitation. In general, the simulations with the Emanuel scheme over land are better at capturing the major characteristics of summer precipitation over South Korea, despite not all statistical metrics showing the best performance. When applying the Emanuel scheme to both land and the ocean, precipitation tends to be slightly overestimated. This deficiency can be alleviated by using either the Tiedtke or Kain–Fritsch schemes over the ocean instead. As few studies have applied and evaluated the Tiedtke and Kain–Fritsch schemes to the Korean region within the RegCM framework, and this study introduces the potential of these new CPSs compared with the more frequently selected Emanuel scheme, which is particularly beneficial to RegCM users.

Names of the Old World tribes of Gesneriaceae are updated both nomenclaturally and taxonomically. The most important change is that Epithemateae (Meisn.) C.B. Clarke antedates, and therefore replaces, Klugieae Fritsch. All other suprageneric names known to have been validly published are quoted in synonymy of the appropriate tribe.

In theory, none of these instruments is anything new or original: the Donalde instrument, manufactured by Arnold and Son in Manchester, resembles the Fritsch-Bosemann catheter, whose beak is elongated in the form of a sharp spoon; its diameter is equal to No. 14 of Duncan's expander (approximately No. 8-9 Hegar).

This work describes the chemical composition, and evaluates the antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of a hydroalcoholic extract from the leaves of the Licania tomentosa. Gram positive and negative bacterial strains were used in this work. Examination of the phytochemical composition of L. tomentosa revealed the presence of secondary metabolites such as tannins, flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, steroids and triterpenoids. An antibacterial assay pointed out that the extract had a lower minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC - 32 ?g/mL) towards Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC12692). The extract also presented antibacterial activity against other assayed bacteria, with the MIC varying between 64 and 512 ?g/ mL. Our findings reveal that the extract presented an antioxidative capacity lower than that of BHT at the same concentration, used as positive control. Our results suggest that the levels and combinations between the secondary metabolites of this plant should be investigated to explain the demonstrated antibacterial activity.

AbstractDuring a floristic survey of the northern slopes of Matokit Mountain in the surroundings of Vrgorac in central Dalmatia, a peculiar population ofCardaminebelonging to theC. maritimacomplex was found. Because of its morphology, general habit, type of leaves and fruits, the collected plants were recognized asC. fialaehitherto know only from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Morphologically,C. fialaeis similar to the Serbian endemicC. serbicawith which it shares following characteristics: auricules at the base of lower cauline leaves, stem and rosette leaves bipinnate, margin of leaflets serrate with hairy main stem and sepals, although it differs in having bigger petals and sepals, longer filaments and 1–2 lateral stems.C. fialaegrows on lower altitudes in rocky ground within the vegetation of forest fringes of the sub-Mediterranean zone. This is the first report of the endemic speciesC. fialaein Croatian flora.

Abstract The fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–NCAR Mesoscale Model (MM5)-based regional climate model (CMM5) capability in simulating the interannual variations of U.S. precipitation and surface air temperature during 1982–2002 is evaluated with a continuous baseline integration driven by the NCEP–Department of Energy (DOE) Second Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project Reanalysis (R-2). It is demonstrated that the CMM5 has a pronounced downscaling skill for precipitation and temperature interannual variations. The EOF and correlation analyses illustrate that, for both quantities, the CMM5 captures the spatial pattern, temporal evolution, and circulation teleconnections much better than the R-2. In particular, the CMM5 more realistically simulates the precipitation pattern centered in the Northwest, where the representation of the orographic enhancement by the forced uplifting during winter (rainy season) is greatly improved over the R-2. The downscaling skill, however, is sensitive to the cumulus parameterization. This sensitivity is studied by comparing the baseline with a branch summer integration replacing the Grell with the Kain–Fritsch cumulus scheme in the CMM5. The dominant EOF mode of the U.S. summer precipitation interannual variation, identified with the out-of-phase relationship between the Midwest and Southeast in observations, is reproduced more accurately by the Grell than the Kain–Fritsch scheme, which largely underestimates the variation in the Midwest. This pattern is associated with east–west movement of the Great Plains low-level jet (LLJ): a more western position corresponds to a stronger southerly flow bringing more moisture and heavier rainfall in the Midwest and less in the Southeast. The second EOF pattern, which describes the consistent variation over the southern part of the Midwest and the South in observations, is captured better by the Kain–Fritsch scheme than the Grell, whose pattern systematically shifts southward.

Abstract Many convective parameterization schemes define a convective adjustment time scale τ as the time allowed for dissipation of convective available potential energy (CAPE). The Kain–Fritsch scheme defines τ based on an estimate of the advective time period for deep convective clouds within a grid cell, with limits of 1800 and 3600 s, based on practical cloud-lifetime considerations. In simulations from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model using 12-km grid spacing, the value of τ often defaults to the lower limit, resulting in relatively rapid thermodynamics adjustments and high precipitation rates. Herein, a new computation for τ in the Kain–Fritsch scheme is implemented based on the depth of the buoyant layer and the convective velocity scale. This new τ formulation is applied using 12- and 36-km model grid spacing in conjunction with a previous modification that takes into account the radiation effects of parameterized convective clouds. The dynamically computed convective adjustment time scale is shown to reduce the precipitation bias by approximately 15% while also providing improved simulations of inland rainfall from tropical storms.
