The focus of this article is on a type of discourse that is central to any culture — the gluttonous discourse (gastronomic discourse), which aims to achieve communication in relation to historical, religious-ethnic and other aspects of the eating process between different peoples. Intercultural communication and translation are challenged by differences in established gastronomic norms. The techniques translators encounter when translating gluttonous texts are discussed in this article.

Though the fat person in the eighteenth and nineteenth century culture usually represented wealth and prosperity, or by extension, either literally or metaphorically, greed and avarice, there was one situation in which fat people themselves were mocked and shamed. Extremely fat people were seen as a form of human grotesquery. They serve as a spectacle of oddity in fairs, circuses, vaudeville and most recently on television programs such as ‘The Biggest Loser’. In all this the fat man suffers the greatest humiliation. His body is at once exposed and undignified. The negative effect that these f

It should be pointed out, that as an integral component of culture, gastronomic vocabulary reflects linguistic and cultural features of the language. This study relevance is accounted for by role of glutton discourse in modern society, where speakers of different languages with different cultural archetypes have their own preferences in field of gastronomy, which are expressed in a specific gastronomic dictionary that attributes national characteristics to each of them. AbstractThis paper examines themes related to cooking, food, nutrition, and the relationship between dietary practice and health in late-nineteenth century and early-twentieth century Bengal, and argues that food and cuisine represented a vibrant site on which a complex rhetorical struggle between colonialism and nationalism was played out. Insofar as they carried symbolic meanings and ‘civilisational attributes’, cooking and eating transcended their functionality and became cultural practices, with a strong ideological-pedagogical content. The enthusiastic (even excessive) consumerism of contemporary western society has its roots, according to some, in the expansion of the consumption of goods in Renaissance Europe. Early modern men and women were ardent, even “passionate” consumers. Such self-indulgence was regarded as decadent and socially perilous; religious and other moral authorities of the era sought to eradicate or at least control these sins of excess. My study examines criticism of “crimes of consumption” in both serious and satirical French literature of the early modern era, including such pamphlets as Frenaizie fanta

Drawing from historical literary works and contemporary French literature, this study [1] explored the evolution of the meanings of ‘gourmandise’ as a concept, from its early characterisation as a cardinal sin to a contemporary notion merging with visual textualisation. Furthermore, it argues that the twentieth century paved the way for a transformation in the meaning of gourmandise: its definition now emphasises a visual refinement characteristic, while retaining the element of excess as part of its appeal, thus making ‘gourmandise’ symbolic, accessible and acceptable to the general public.&#

Abstract This article compares images of food as temptation, and hunger as test, in two samples of late-nineteenth century British and Italian children’s literature. It reads the narratives alongside coeval popular medical manuals on child health, examining recurring descriptions of children as natural gluttons in works dedicated to child nutrition. Putting the select fiction and non-fiction in dialogue with moral, scientific, and nation-building middle-class discourses circulating in both countries, the article finds that the ‘gluttonous child’ narrative was both transnational and transtextua

A minor French writer of the 18th century, A.G. Meusnier de Querlon (1702–1780), a polymath, journalist, and prose writer, is now best known as the author of the libertine novel “The Portress of the Carmelite Convent” (1745), which was reprinted many times. The article examines the reflection of “gastrological” (the word “gastronomy” had not yet existed at that time) issues in the work of Meusnier de Querlon. The focus is primarily on his short essay “Apology of the Moderns, or The Answer of a French Chef, the Author of ‘The Gifts of Comus’, to an English Pastry Chef” (1740). Meusnier de Querl
