Annotation:
From the time I was a graduate student in folklore at the University of Pennsylvania I have been interested in the ways that folklore studies and the health professions can be productively brought together, and I have always considered this to be a primary example of "applied folklore." My definition of applied folklore is simply the application of concepts, methods and materials from academic folklore studies to the solution of practical problems. In other words, I see applied folklore standing in the same relation to basic folklore research as engineering does to the basic natural sciences. Such an application of academic folklore knowledge to practical problems provides an excellent setting for the empirical testing to folklore hypotheses and generates by necessity a richly inter-disciplinary approach. Applied folklore, therefore, should be as productive for the academic folklore enterprise as vice versa, and this reciprocal advantage is best realized by folklorists with both basic and applied training and interests.

Objective: To map the formation processes and ongoing education actions experienced by Community Health Agents (CHAs) in the context of family health, anchored in the concept of culture. Methodology: Scope review following the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). The search in databases such as BVS, EBSCO – Academic Search Premier, CINAHL, GreenFILE, SocINDEX, Embase, ERIC, Global Index Medicus, PUBMED, Scielo, Scopus, WOS, took place in November and December 2022. The search terms were: Community Health Workers, Professional Training, Continuing Education, Family Health Strategy, Primary Health Care. Studies analyzing training experiences and actions of Permanent Education in Health (PEH) for CHAs in the context of family health were included. Endnote and Rayyan software were used in managing the selection of findings. The review protocol was registered on the Open Science Framework (OSF). Results: The sample included 25 studies, generating two categories: The primacy of instrumental technical training culture; and The biomedical culture guiding PEH. CHA training involves disinvestment and invisibility, focusing on the biomedical model. On the other hand, even if sporadic, PEH actions are guided by emerging health themes. Final Considerations: The formative processes and PEH for CHAs involve paths of construction and deconstruction, progress, and setbacks, based on a culture that often restricts established rights.

Objective. The main objective of this research was to determine whether and to what extent the level of health literacy affects the reproductive health of young people. Methods. The research belongs to the group of epidemiological studies, conducted according to the type of cross-sectional study. It was carried out in the period from 1st to 17th of June, 2019.A total of 230 students of professional health studies participated in the research. The questionnaire, in addition to demo-graphic data, contained the S-TOFHLA health literacy test and specially designed questions about reproductive health. Results: Our research showed that six respondents (2.61%) had inadequate health literacy, 80 (34.78%) had marginal health literacy, and 144 (62.61%) had adequate health literacy. Greater health literacy is associated with sexual activity, number of partners and the use of anti-baby pills. Health literacy is influenced by many factors, including knowledge of reproductive health, age, gender, sociodemographic factors, economic status, level of education, and more. Insufficient promotion of sexual education in our society, potential mistrust in the official education system and the desire of respondents to independently research this area. Conclusion. More than two thirds of students show the adequate level of health literacy. Students who are older in terms of age and years of study have a higher level of health literacy. This research can serve as a starting point for the creation of new programs on reproductive health and health literacy, especially those aimed at the population of health professionals.

Purpose University of Utah has created various partnerships to improve health literacy and health outcomes among patient populations, employees and community members. Health sciences librarians have been key members of these partnerships. This paper aims to describe and share several of these partnerships, including training programs, research efforts and advocacy initiatives, to encourage others to engage in similar activities. Design/methodology/approach Case studies include outreach projects and partnerships to foster health literacy and promote healthy living such as: highly visible information resource provision and associated outreach for patients and families; community health fairs; research on providing point-of-need information for vulnerable community populations; health literacy awareness and resources for professionals; health literacy education for interprofessional students; and a competition for interprofessional students to create health videos to address a variety of topics in multiple languages. Findings Partnerships and outreach efforts lead to improved awareness by institutional personnel of the importance of health literacy. Research on using health literacy to empower patients and increase patient satisfaction can demonstrate how to lower institutional costs and improve guideline compliance, as well out health outcomes. Originality/value Librarians’ instructional skills create personal health educational content for patients and professionals; engaging colleagues to address health literacy lowers health care costs, institutional costs and increases patient compliance and satisfaction.

Black Feminist Health Science Studies (BFHSS) is a critical intervention into a number of intersecting arenas of scholarship and activism, including feminist health studies, contemporary medical curriculum reform conversations, disability studies, environmental justice, and feminist technoscience studies (Bailey, 2016). We argue towards a theory of BFHSS that builds on social justice science, which has as its focus the health and well-being of marginalized groups. We would like to move towards a social justice science that understands the health and well-being of people to be its central purpose. This formulation of BFHSS provides evidence of the co-constitutive nature of medical science and popular perception, underscoring the need to engage them simultaneously. Health is both a desired state of being and a social construct necessary of interrogation because of the ways that race, gender, able bodiedness, and other aspects of cultural production profoundly shape our notions of what is healthy (Metzl & Kirkland, 2010).

During recent years many advances have been made in the development of insect control by genetic manipulation. These methods include the sterile male technique, now well known, which depends on ionizing radiation or chemo sterilization. The recent field experiment carried out by WHO in Rangoon, Burma, on Culex fatigans has demonstrated that naturally occurring cytogenetic mechanisms such as cytoplasmic incompatibility can be used successfully without the use of radiations or chemosterilants. The paper not only describes the experiment on Culex fatigans but also discusses basic concepts and theoretical considerations involved in genetic control of insects of public health importance. There are a number of problems which require study before genetic control can be used on an operational scale.

The aim of this study was to analyze the methods used for validation studies in nursing research considering the clinical investigation as phenomenon. We carried out literature at BIREME, CINAHL, PUBMED which contain the terms 'validation studies', 'nursing' and 'clinical' and 21 articles were included in the review. The majority of the studies were conducted in 2008; in North America (USA) and European Community (62%) in the area of adult health. Most of the phenomena investigated were related to nursing care involving physical and emotional aspects. The content validity has been cited in 71.4% of the articles, criterion validity in 28.5% and construct validity in 23.8%. The reliability by means of Cronbach's alpha was used in the majority of the studies. It was found a knowledge gap concerning the validation estudies in the area of public health, child health and the social phenomena related to nursing care.

While more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, health disparities across cities remain serious issues. Urban settings are a relatively new phenomenon in human history, and so is urban health. This study aims to figure out the concept of urban health and analyze research trends on urban health through systematic review. Studies published since 2010 either in English or Korean were screened; 31 eligible studies were selected for the review. The contents of the studies were categorized by urban environment, urban planning, urban policy, urban health index and health equity. Taking together urban health and healthy city, there were no significant differences in the concepts; rather, they complement each other to achieve sustainable cities and communities. While there are diverse related studies, urban health remains rare in the field. Therefore, future studies need to focus on urban health topics to resolve health disparities in the urban areas.
