The ability of Leiophron uniformis (Gahan) to parasitize 4 Lygus spp. was determined. While L. uniformis readily attacked Lygus hesperus (Knight), L. lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), L. elisus Van Duzee, and L. desertinus Knight, only 6.7% of the L. lineolaris attacked were parasitized compared to 84-87% parasitization of the other species. Lernaea spp. was identified as a widespread problem in West Malaysia and various aspects of the parasite were studied. A survey of the distribution of Lernaea spp. in West Malaysia revealed its presence in all the 8 government owned fish breeding stations, 104 privately owned farms and 4 out of 5 consignments of imported fingerlings. The Lernaea spp. present in these ponds were identified as L. piscinae and L. cyprinacea "Asian" form (=b.elegans) and its morpha forms, L. ctenopharyngodonis and L.guadrinucifera. This work allowed the first characterization of the three members of the chloride channel CLC family in T.brucei. The TbCLCs are expressed in the two proliferative stages of the parasite and two of their members appear non-essential. The three TbCLCs act as chloride transporters in X.laevis oocytes and some of their biophysical properties were determined. Furthermore, TbCLC-b appeared to be involved in lysis by the human innate immunity protein apoL-1<p>A novel function of T.brucei adenylate cyclases was discovered in their ability to suppress expression of the innate immunity protein TNF-α. Fragmentation can drive local populations to become smaller and more isolated, and consequently more susceptible to extinction. Movement between patches, however, can interconnect such populations so that they effectively behave as larger and more stable metapopulations.
