Three islands of the Dodecanese (Rhodes, Kos, and Kalymnos) have produced a substantial amount of published evidence which sheds light on population fluctuations and external relations during the twelfth century BC. The burial evidence from the Ialysos cemeteries indicates that the population may have increased fivefold after LH IIIB. A corresponding decrease may have occurred in southern Rhodes indicating a synoecism of the island. If this is so, the reasons may be related to the increasing prosperity of the main town, Ialysos. This is a period of regional diversity. Distinctive island potter

Among the vast amount of pottery yielded from the Late Bronze Age settlement of Ialysos (Trianda) on Rhodes, 233 samples have been selected for chemical analysis by means of Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) at the Bonn Laboratory. Thus, a rather comprehensive new data-base for pottery assemblages from Rhodes and other related production centres has been provided. Further evidence has been also suggested for the local mechanisms of pottery production and the patterns of continuity and changes from the LM IA, through to LMIB/LH IIA and LH IIB-III A1 to LH III A2/LH III B1 periods, in both the i

AbstractThis is the first portion of a study in two parts on the lyric and elegiac poet Timocreon of Ialysos. My aim is to offer an up-to-date presentation of and running commentary on the extant fragments of his poetry, which has received less attention than it deserves. The first four fragments of Timocreon’s poetic production that are discussed in this article are those concerning his turbulent relationship with Themistocles.

This paper presents the results of the chemical analyses by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) of a selection of vases from the recent excavations of Mycenaean tombs at Pylona, Rhodes. The data are used to support and confirm the stylistic attributions of the vases as either local Rhodian products or mainland imports. It is suggested that the majority of the imports are from the Argolid, but that at least one other origin is likely as well. Two distinct compositional groups of ‘local’ pottery are also identified. Comparison is made with the data from the analyses

Rhodes was founded in 408 BC through the synoecism of the cities Ialysos, Kamiros and Lindos. A unique political tradition known as the règle triennale ensured a democratic process, where each phyla (φυλή) took turns nominating its eponym. This meant that siblings held the eponymous office at intervals of two or three years. In contrast, a variation of the règle triennale was found in the eponymous catalogue of Olbia Pontica. This variation may have resulted from democratic reforms of 392—388 BC. Unlike Rhodes, the Olbia catalogue displayed a form of differentiation in the intervals for holdin

This study is part of a most important ri-edition project of ialysian burials digged in Rhodes by Italian archaeologists in 1916 and 1934 and published in Clara Rhodos volumes and in the Yearbook of the Italian Archaeological School of Athens in 1926. It offers a complex picture of the formal repertory and the east-greek pottery during the orientalizing and archaic time. The examined specimen offers the possibility to know especially the local pottery shapes and those of the so called Vroulian pottery. The emer

Abstract The ancient state of Rhodes was famous for many things in the Hellenistic period; it emerged as an economic powerhouse thanks to its strategic position on maritime trade routes, its status further bolstered by its proud independence in an era of great kings, and its cultural successes and heritage celebrated by contemporaries as well as later writers. But what did this state look like on the inside, and what social and religious forces contributed to its success? Abstract During the Archaic period, the island of Rhodes was divided among three city-states: Ialysus, Camirus, and Lindus. There is no sign of the vicious internecine struggles that consumed, for example, the poleis on Lesbos, and the available evidence strongly suggests that Rhodes was a remarkably prosperous place throughout the Archaic period. Rhodes’ wealth derived in no small part from its position as an important intermediary between the Greeks living around the Aegean and the peoples of the Near East. Abstract Chapter 1 is devoted to Helios, the god portrayed by the Colossus of Rhodes. From the time it was settled by the Argives, the island was divided into three different cities, Ialysos, Kamiros, and Lindos. It was placed under the protection of Zeus, who had his sanctuary on its peak, Mount Atabyron. Yet, in 408 bc, when Ialysos, Kamiros, and Lindos united to create the city of Rhodes, they chose Helios as their patron deity. This decision is due to the influence of the Eratids, an aristocratic and perhaps royal family from Ialysos, which had long promoted the unification. Already in 464

Abstract In this chapter, the local religious landscapes and pantheons of Ialysos, Lindos, and Cameiros are explored in turn, drawing on some archaeological evidence, but mainly on the substantial body of epigraphic material that survives from Lindos and Cameiros. While the material rarely offers much information on cultic intricacies, it allows us to map the diverse local religious landscapes, and the deities who were worshipped there. For both Lindos and Cameiros, some conclusions can also be drawn on the diachronic development of local pantheons, and how religious trends exist in dialogue w
