AbstractThe present work represents the first karyological and molecular characterisation of Sphaerium solidum, a rare European clam. Specimens of S. solidum were collected in Lithuania and Hungary. The modal diploid chromosome number found in both populations was 2n=30. Small, biarmed B chromosomes were found in 42.3% of cells studied in clams from Lithuania and in 11.8% of cells in clams from Hungary. Comparative analysis revealed no significant (P<0.05) interspecific differences in chromosome morphology of S. solidum and that of previously studied S. corneum. DNA sequence analyses of S. solidum showed no interpopulation differences in ITS1; moreover, only one site was different from ITS1 of S. corneum. However, differences in mitochondrial 16S sequence of S. solidum were revealed: two haplotypes in Lithuania and three in Hungary were identified. The genetic characteristics revealed in this study do not support ascription of S. solidum and S. corneum to different subgenus, Cyrenastrum and Sphaerium s. str., respectively. Comparative cytogenetic analysis disclosed that the chromosome morphology could be conserved in some sphaeriid species during speciation despite the fact that most other species in this family undergo radical karyotypic differentiation.

Na gruncie polskiego prawa cywilnego, źródłem powstania solidarności może być jedynie ustawa lub czynność prawna. Jak ukazuje jednak praktyka, powstają sytuacje, gdy kilka osób zostanie zobowiązanych do spełnienia tego samego świadczenia, wobec wspólnego wierzyciela, z zachowaniem odrębności stosunków prawnych tych dłużników, a także braku uregulowań ich powinności, w oparciu o przepis prawa. In solidum, pomimo swojego niepodważalnego występowania między uczestnikami porządku prawnego, chociażby przy zbiegu odpowiedzialności deliktowej z obowiązkiem naprawienia szkody, nadal stanowi pewnego rodzaju niedoprecyzowaną sytuację prawną. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest poddanie analizie możliwości stosowania niektórych przepisów o solidarności względem in solidum. Zaistniały na tym polu spór doktrynalny, wynikający z samej zasadności stosowania przepisów o solidarności do in solidum, mierzy się z utartym już pragmatyzmem judykatury. W pracy zostanie przedstawione dwojakie spojrzenie na możliwość stosowania omawianych regulacji. Zaprezentowanie krytycznego spojrzenia doktryny na wykorzystanie przepisów o solidarności względem in solidum m.in z uwagi na to, że: in solidum jest niepożądanym, a nawet nieistniejącym w praktyce zjawiskiem, niekiedy zrównany ze zbiegiem roszczeń. Zostanie zestawione ze stanowiskiem autorki, popartym dokonaniami innych przedstawicieli i orzecznictwa o możliwości, a nawet konieczności stosowania przepisów o solidarności względem in solidum. Teza badawcza pracy opiera się na założeniu, że pomimo nieuregulowania in solidum w polskim porządku prawnym jego faktyczne występowanie w stosunkach cywilnoprawnych jest niezaprzeczalne. Tym samym niezbędne jest znalezienie przepisów, które umożliwią postępowanie w przypadku takich okoliczności faktycznych. Należy jednak znaleźć w tym celu podstawę prawną, regulującą podobny stosunek prawny. W związku z tym, że większość cech in solidum pozostaje w spójności z solidarnością bierną czy czynną, nie ma podstaw do tego, aby odmówić solidarności niewłaściwej odpowiedniego stosowania niektórych przepisów o solidarności. Co jednak istotne, należy to przeprowadzić w taki sposób, aby nie naruszyć natury danego stosunku.

However, limited and unclear morphological data were used to describe the type species, X. solidum Linton, 1910. Here, we present the first detailed morphological information for a member of Xystretrum. Morphological characters were described using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of Xystretrum specimens from Sphoeroides testudineus (Linnaeus) (Tetraodontiformes, Tetraodontidae), collected at six localities off the northern Yucatan Peninsula coast of the Gulf of Mexico. We also compared sequence fragments of the 28S (region D1–D3) ribosomal DNA and mitochondrial Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene with those available for other gorgoderine taxa. We assigned these Xystretrum specimens to X. solidum, despite the incompleteness of published descriptions. The data provide a foundation for future work to validate the identities of X. solidum, X. papillosum Linton, 1910 and X. pulchrum (Travassos, 1920) with new collections from the type localities and hosts. Comparisons of 28S and COI regions described here also provide an opportunity to evaluate the monophyletic status of Xystretrum.

Tableau d’honneur de la Faculté des études supérieures et postdoctorales, 2009-2010<br>La présente thèse propose une étude complète de l'obligation in solidum en droit privé québécois. Elle en embrasse donc tous les aspects : origines, nature, justification, portée et effets. Elle cherche principalement à comprendre et à cerner cette notion (Partie 1) et à en préciser le régime ainsi que le champ d'application (Partie II). Pour éclairer notre analyse, nous retraçons les origines historiques de l'obligation in solidum en droit romain, en Ancien droit français et en droit français moderne. L'obligation in solidum telle qu'elle existe aujourd 'hui est formellement née en doctrine et en jurisprudence françaises au tournant du 20e siècle. Au Québec, avant le début du 21 e siècle, sa présence s'est avérée discrète et incertaine. Nous examinons également, quoique de manière moins systématique, la présence de l'obligation in solidum dans d'autres juridictions de tradition civiliste et en droit de tradition anglaise. Cet exercice nous a permis de construire notre vision de l'obligation in solidum, tout en exposant et critiquant celles des principaux auteurs français et québécois qui se sont intéressés au sujet, et ce de la fin des années 1800 jusqu'à aujourd'hui. À partir de la vision de l'obligation in solidum qui fut ainsi construite, nous avons dégagé le régime juridique de l'institution ainsi que son champ d'application en droit québécois. Par une étude et une comparaison systématique avec le régime de la solidarité, régime qui est prévu de façon détaillée par les législateurs québécois et français, nous proposons un régime juridique pour l'obligation in solidum. Après avoir ainsi posé ces assises générales, notre thèse est complétée avec des assises vraiment particulières au droit québécois. Le champ d'application de l'obligation in solidum est intimement lié dans tout système juridique à l'espace octroyé par le législateur et la jurisprudence à l'obligation solidaire. Le droit québécois diffère à cet égard de façon notable du droit français. Pourtant, le droit québécois a formellement reconnu l'obligation in solidum et la jurisprudence en fait maintenant un usage constant. En s'appuyant sur leur structure, leurs fondements théoriques et leurs effets pratiques, nous dégageons le champ d'application souhaitable de l'obligation solidaire et de l'obligation in solidum en droit privé québécois.

Cette thèse propose une étude du régime de l’obligation à la dette douanière lorsqu’elle implique plusieurs débiteurs, en se basant sur la notion d’obligation in solidum. Cette obligation a été retracée depuis ses origines pénales jusqu’à sa dégradation en un simple dérivé de l’obligation solidaire au XXe siècle. L’analyse des sources romaines met en lumière ses caractéristiques fondamentales de l’obligation in solidum, qui la singularisent de l’obligation solidaire. Sur le plan structurel, l’obligation in solidum se distingue par une structure reposant sur la pluralité d’objets individuels pour chaque codébiteur et une cause indivisible. L’étude avance une qualification contractuelle des actes douaniers particuliers, incluant des autorisations et des déclarations de placement, les définissant respectivement comme contrat-cadre et contrats d’application. Ces analyses révèlent une logique de bonne foi et introduisent le concept de « dol douanier communautaire » pour expliquer l’annulation des contrats entachés de mauvaise foi. Sur le plan de la dette douanière elle-même, les faits générateurs de l’obligation révèlent sa nature indivisible et les caractéristiques propres à une obligation in solidum. Chaque débiteur est personnellement responsable de l'intégralité de la dette, en raison de cette cause indivisible, tout en conservant des objets indépendants de la dette, structure qui rend le régime solidaire inapplicable. La distinction entre obligation solidaire et obligation in solidum se manifeste dans l’absence de bénéfices de discussion et de division, confirmant la nature in solidum de l’obligation douanière. La seconde partie explore les effets secondaires du régime in solidum de la dette douanière, comme la prescription, la remise de dette et la transaction. En matière de prescription, la pluralité des faits générateurs affecte les délais de prescription ainsi que la portée des effets relatifs des actes interruptifs ou suspensifs, illustrant le caractère indépendant des objets de l’obligation douanière. Quant à la remise de dette, l’analyse conclut que le créancier peut accorder une remise partielle sans affecter les autres débiteurs, en cohérence avec les principes de l’obligation in solidum. L’étude des causes d’extinction montre que la dette douanière, dotée de finalités indemnitaire et répressive, peut subsister malgré la disparition de sa cause indemnitaire si le débiteur a encouru des poursuites. Derrière ce régime européen d’apparence confuse et semblant dépourvu de logique se trouvait en réalité un régime d’obligation à pluralité de sujets, dont les propriétés fondamentales et structurelles constituaient des clés de compréhension, rendant perceptible l’essence logique qui en animait le fonctionnement. C’est à l’aune de cette découverte que nous sommes parvenus à valider l’hypothèse selon laquelle l’obligation à la dette douanière obéissait au régime de l’obligation in solidum, en ce qu’elle était pourvue des mêmes caractéristiques fondamentales et structurelles, que son fonctionnement obéissait à une logique semblable et enfin qu’elle produisait des effets principaux et secondaires identiques à cette institution romaine préjustinienne<br>This thesis focuses on the study of the regime governing customs debt obligations involving multiple debtors, based on the notion of in solidum obligation. This concept has been traced from its penal origins to its degradation as a mere derivative of solidary obligation in the 20th century. An analysis of Roman sources highlights the fundamental characteristics of in solidum obligation, which distinguish it from solidary obligation. Structurally, the in solidum obligation is characterized by a framework based on multiple individual objects for each co-debtor and an indivisible cause. The study advances a contractual qualification of specific customs acts, including authorizations and placement declarations, defining them respectively as a framework contract and application contracts. These analyses reveal a logic of good faith and introduce the concept of “community customs fraud,” explaining the annulment of contracts tainted by bad faith. Regarding customs debt itself, the obligation’s triggering events reveal its indivisible nature and the characteristics inherent to an in solidum obligation. Each debtor is personally responsible for the entire debt due to this indivisible cause, while maintaining independent objects within the debt, making the solidarity regime inapplicable. The distinction between solidary obligation and in solidum obligation is apparent in the absence of the benefits of discussion and division, confirming the in solidum nature of the customs debt obligation. The second part explores secondary effects of the in solidum customs debt regime, such as prescription, debt remission, and transaction. In terms of prescription, the plurality of triggering events affects both the prescription periods and the relative effects of interruptive or suspensive acts, illustrating the independent character of customs debt objects. Regarding debt remission, the analysis concludes that the creditor may grant partial remission without impacting other debtors, aligning with the principles of in solidum obligation. The study of extinction causes shows that customs debt, endowed with indemnifying and punitive purposes, may persist despite the disappearance of its indemnifying cause if the debtor is subject to prosecution. Behind this seemingly complex and illogical European regime lies a multi-subject obligation system, whose fundamental and structural properties offer key insights, revealing the underlying logic driving its function. This discovery allowed us to validate the hypothesis that customs debt obligation adheres to the in solidum obligation regime, as it shares the same fundamental and structural characteristics, operates under a similar logic, and ultimately produces both primary and secondary effects identical to this pre-Justinian Roman institution

Selon l'analyse classique, l'obligation solidaire et l'obligation in solidum sont conçues comme des obligations au total stricto sensu. Chaque codébiteur est censé être débiteur principal de l'intégralité de la dette. Autrement dit, ces deux types d'obligation donneraient naissance à un faisceau d'obligations au total principales groupées autour d'un même objet. Une analyse plus poussée de la matière révèle que cette vision travestit leur vraie nature juridique. Depuis longtemps déjà, l'obligation solidaire et l'obligation in solidum n'appartiennent plus à la catégorie des obligations au total stricto sensu mais à celle des obligations au total lato sensu. Elles doivent être qualifiées de la sorte parce qu'elles permettent effectivement au créancier d'exiger de chaque codébiteur le paiement de toute la dette. Cependant, cet effet n'est pas dû au fait que chacun est tenu en qualité de débiteur principal par une obligation principale au total, mais parce que le faisceau d'obligations qui en découle combine des obligations principales et des obligations de garantie accessoires aux premières. Souvent, les coobligés se garantissent réciproquement et sont tenus a la fois par une obligation principale pour une fraction de la dette globale et par une obligation de garantie pour le surplus. Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2013.<br>Ants emerged during the Cretaceous Period more than 100 million years ago (Grimaldi & Engel 2005; Perrichot et al. 2008) and diversified independently on different landmasses following the Early Cretaceous fragmentation of Pangaea (Grimaldi & Agosti 2000). Today, ants represent one of the most ecologically successful groups globally (Wilson 1987), and their diversity far exceeds that of other social insects (Hölldobler & Wilson 1990). Currently 21 subfamilies, 305 genera and 12465 recorded ant species exist (Bolton 2012). Ants occur in almost all terrestrial habitats (Brown 2000) and are not uniformly distributed across regions, biomes and continents. As with all other taxa, historical abiotic factors have played a major role in their diversification and biogeographic structure (Tolley et al. 2006), including climatic changes (Holldobler & Wilson 1990) and the necessity to adapt to new environmental conditions (Tolley et al. 2006). Many global areas still lack data on regional biodiversity and the historical processes that may have shaped it. This is particularly so for southern Africa where the ant fauna is still relatively poorly known (Robertson 2000) and where there have been no published biogeographic analyses for any ant taxon. There is a highly endemic ant fauna that has evolved in the dry regions of southern Africa, which shows unique adaptations to the extreme thermal niches of these regions. For example, ants in the genus Ocymyrmex have adapted to forage on barren ground at temperatures as high as 67 ºC, when most insects and other arthropods are unable to survive (Marsh 1985). Ocymyrmex have long legs and usually hold the head, thorax and gaster high above the substrate, which helps with body temperature regulation. These ants are most active at the hottest time of the day and they move very rapidly. For example, O. barbiger has been observed running at speeds of 23 m/min (Marsh, 1985). In some ant species such extreme temperatures may limit foraging activity (Ward, 2007) but, in the case of Ocymyrmex, adaptations to this extreme thermal niche allowed exploitation of resources (dead and heat stressed arthropods). Moreover, these ants have subterranean nests that are ideal to escape environmental extremes and to move their brood deeply under the ground (Marsh, 1985). The distribution of some ant taxa in these dry regions closely reflects borders between particular biomes. For instance, in South Africa the ponerine ant, Pachycondyla hottentota, and the sugar ant, Camponotus storeatus, follow the borders of the Nama and Succulent Karoo biomes respectively (Robertson 2000). In the light of this background the overall objective of this study is to revise the taxonomy and determine the historical drivers of diversification in an important group of arid-adapted ants, the Tetramorium solidum-group, which is mainly restricted to dry semi-desert areas in southern Africa. Members of the Tetramorium solidum-group are commonly encountered seed harvesters yet despite their apparent ecological importance, their taxonomy and biogeography remains largely unresolved. Thirty years elapsed since the last revision of the group by Bolton (1980) and since, ant surveys have considerably expanded the material available for study and provide an opportunity for a fresh perspective on this group. The specific aims of this project were twofold: 1) to revise the species of the Tetramorium solidum-group; and 2) to explore the phylogenetic relationships among members of the group and the bioclimatic factors restricting their current distributional ranges in southern Africa. My study is timely, as to date no attempt has been made to unravel the history of arid-adapted ant diversification in southern Africa. Such information is much needed for identifying areas of high species diversity and endemism (Azuma et al. 2006) and prioritizing areas for conservation (Faith 1992). The thesis consists of three chapters. In chapter one I use morphological characters to review the current taxonomy of the Tetramorium solidum-group. From these data I have compiled an updated identification key for the group and described five new species. In chapter two I have constructed a fossil-calibrated dated phylogeny for Tetramorium solidum-group species in order to explore the historical processes that may have contributed in structuring the current distribution patterns and endemism within and among the species of the group. In this chapter I also explore bioclimatic factors that may restrict the current distribution of members on the Tetramorium solidum-group, using correlative bioclimatic modeling approaches. Bien que la solidarité en droit civil français, qui puise ses origines en droit romain, ait été importée dans les Codes civils coloniaux du Vietnam, elle n'est pas adoptée par le droit civil moderne du Vietnam. L'obligation solidaire présentée par le droit civil vietnamien est particulièrement originale. Elle s'écarte du droit civil français ainsi que du droit romano-germanique. Il existe une équivalence fonctionnelle entre l'obligation solidaire en droit vietnamien et la solidarité en droit français. La principale différence est l'absence des effets secondaires de l'obligation solidaire en droit civil vietnamien. Quant à l'obligation in solidum en droit civil français, celle-ci a un équivalent fonctionnel dans la responsabilité solidaire en droit civil vietnamien. Cependant, si l'obligation in solidum en droit civil français présente à la fois une pluralité de sources et une unité de source, la responsabilité solidaire en droit civil vietnamien ne connait qu'une unité de source. The joint and several obligation in Vietnamese private law is functional equivalence to the obligation solidaire in French private law. The main difference is the absence of the secondary effects on the joint and several obligation in Vietnamese civil law. Due to the obligation jointly and severally in French civil law, it has a functional joint and several liability in Vietnamese civil law equivalent. However, if the obligation in solidum in French civil law has both a plurality of sources and a source unit; joint and several liability in Vietnamese civil law recognizes a source unit. The trend of globalization of law and selling reform of contract law in Europe in which France finds itself, provide an opportunity for the joint and several liability in civil law of Vietnam can approach the solidarity of civil law West in general and the French civil law in particular

L’objectif de la thèse est de réévaluer de façon globale la pertinence et la cohérence de la construction légale et jurisprudentielle actuelle organisant les recours dans les chaînes translatives de propriété. En dépit de contributions doctrinales nombreuses, les solutions se sont accumulées sans que leur articulation soit précisément examinée. L’enjeu de cet examen est d’autant plus important que le contexte général a changé (responsabilité du fait des produits, remise en cause des actions contractuelles, projets de réforme du droit de la responsabilité). L’étude est organisée autour de deux types de dommages : le dommage strictement contractuel et le dommage non strictement contractuel. La première partie évalue le droit positif et ses incertitudes (fondement de l’action directe, opposabilité des clauses de responsabilité au sous-acquéreur, recours en contribution etc.), au regard du manquement strictement contractuel (atteinte à l’utilité du contrat). La seconde partie permet de mettre en lumière les difficultés d’articulation des diverses actions désignées pour réparer le dommage non strictement contractuel, ces difficultés nous conduisant à nous interroger sur la nature de la responsabilité qui doit présider, dans les chaînes translatives de propriété, à la réparation des atteintes au contractant. This type of considerations is becoming all the more impactful that the legal environment has evolved. The goal of the first part is to assess the current state of the law and its uncertainties (the direct action ground, enforceability of limitation clause to consumer, contribution to the debt among co-debtors) when it comes to the pure contractual injury, that is when the usefulness of the contract is to be jeopardized. The second part is focuses on how it is hard to articulate the different actions in order to repair non-pure contractual injury. The assessment of those difficulties will bring us to wonder which nature of liability should prevail to repair injuries within property chains. Finally, answering those questions will lead us to identify the major criteria and the common rationales used to spread liability within property chains

L’un des enjeux pour le développement des batteries tout-solide est d’augmenter la conductivité ionique des électrolytes solides. Le sujet de la thèse porte sur l’étude de deux types de matériaux d’électrolytes solides inorganiques cristallins: les Grenat Li7- 3xAlxLa3Zr2O12 (LLAZO) et les Nasicon Li1.15- 2xMgxZr1.85Y0.15(PO4)3 (LMZYPO). L’objectif de cette étude est de comprendre dans quelle mesure les propriétés conductrices des matériaux étudiés sont impactées par des modifications structurales générées soit par un procédé de traitement particulier, soit par une modification de la composition chimique, et ce grâce au croisement des données structurales acquises par diffraction des rayons X (DRX) et Résonance Magnétique Nucléaire (RMN) MAS avec des données de dynamique des ions déduites de mesures de RMN en température et de spectroscopie d’impédance électrochimique (SIE).Les poudres ont été synthétisées après optimisation des traitements thermiques par méthode solide-solide ou solgel. La densification des pastilles utilisées pour les mesures de conductivité ionique par SIE a été réalisée par la technique de frittage Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS).Dans le cas des grenats LLAZO, l’originalité de notre travail est d’avoir montré qu’un traitement de frittage par SPS, au-delà de la densification attendue des pastilles, engendre également des modifications structurales qui ont des conséquences directes sur la mobilité des ions lithium dans le matériau et par conséquent sur la conductivité ionique. Une augmentation franche de la dynamique microscopique des ions lithium après frittage par SPS a en effet été observée par des mesures en température de RMN de 7Li et le suivi des constantes de relaxation.La deuxième partie de l’étude constitue un travail exploratoire sur la substitution de Li+ par Mg2+ dans LMZYPO. Nous avons ainsi étudié les propriétés de conduction ionique de ces composés mixtes Li/Mg, en parallèle d’un examen minutieux des phases cristallines formées. Nous avons notamment montré que la présence de Mg2+ favorise la formation des phases β’ (P21/n) et β (Pbna) moins conductrices ce qui explique la diminution de la conductivité ionique avec le taux de substitution de Li+ par Mg2+ observée dans ces matériaux de type Nasicon.Nos travaux soulignent donc l’importance primordiale des effets de structure sur les propriétés de matériaux d’électrolytes solides de type céramique<br>One of the issues for the development of all-solid-state batteries is to increase the ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes. The thesis work focuses on two types of materials as crystalline inorganic solid electrolytes: a Garnet Li7-3xAlxLa3Zr2O12 (LLAZO) and a Nasicon Li1.15-2xMgxZr1.85Y0.15(PO4)3 (LMZYPO). The objective of this study is to understand to what extent the conduction properties of the studied materials are impacted by structural modifications generated either by a particular treatment process, or by a modification of the chemical composition. Structural data acquired by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) were then crossed with ions dynamics data deduced from NMR measurements at variable temperature and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).The powders were synthesized after optimizing thermal treatments using solid-solid or sol-gel methods. Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technique was used for the densification of the pellets used for ionic conductivity measurements by EIS.In the case of garnets LLAZO, the originality of our work is to have shown that a SPS sintering treatment, beyond the expected pellets densification, also generates structural modifications having direct consequences on the lithium ions mobility in the material and therefore on the ionic conductivity. A clear increase of the lithium ions microscopic dynamics after SPS sintering was indeed observed by variable temperature 7Li NMR measurements and the monitoring of the relaxation times.The second part of the study provides an exploratory work on the substitution of Li+ by Mg2+ in LMZYPO. We studied the ionic conduction properties of these mixed Li/Mg compounds, in parallel with a fine examination of the crystalline phases formed. We have showed in particular that the presence of Mg2+ favors the formation of the less conductive β’ (P21/n) and β (Pbna) phases, which explains the decrease of the ionic conductivity with the substitution level of Li+ by Mg2+ observed in these Nasicon type materials.Our work therefore highlights the crucial importance of structural effects on the conduction properties of ceramic solid electrolyte materials

Abstract If a solid is initially at rest and equal and opposing forces are applied to that object, Newton’s Second Law guarantees that the object will remain at rest because the net force on the sample is zero. If that object is an elastic solid, then those forces will cause the solid to deform by an amount that is directly proportional to those applied forces. When the forces are removed, the sample will return to its original shape and size. That reversibility is the characteristic that is required if we say the behavior of the solid is “elastic.” This chapter will quantify the elastic behavior of solids by introducing the concepts of stress and strain and expressing their linear relationship through the definition of elastic moduli that depend only upon the material and the nature of the deformation and not upon the shape of the object. Those concepts allow us to generalize Hooke’s law. As before, the combination of a linear equation of state with Newton’s Second Law will now describe wave motion in solids. The introduction of a relaxation time, through the Maxwell model, will let these results be generalized to viscoelastic materials and then be applied to rubber vibration isolators.

Under-deposit CO2 corrosion occurs when solids like sand, corrosion products, wax or a variety of other particles deposit on the bottom of pipelines, forming a bed or layer of solids1, 2. Under-deposit CO2 corrosion is different from “regular” CO2 corrosion as the aqueous solution beneath the solids is chemically and physically different from the “bulk” solution in the pipe. The presence of solids can also limit inhibitor access to the metal surface which can initiate severe localized corrosion3. Initial testing was directed towards defining and modeling the fundamental mild steel CO2 corrosion mechanisms occurring in the presence of clean inert solid deposits with different particle sizes and shapes (SiO2 powder, glass beads (GB) and sand). Experiments were conducted in a glass cell at a total pressure of 1 bar for temperatures of 25°C and 80°C. The mild steel sample was immersed in 1 wt% NaCl electrolyte for one day. Corrosion behavior was characterized by electrochemical techniques, including LPR (linear polarization resistance), EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and potentiodynamic sweeps. Steel surface morphologies have been analyzed by using SEM (scanning electron microscope) and EDX (energy dispersive x-ray).

Abstract A section of 24 inch oil pipeline experienced pitting and corrosion problems. The cause of pitting and the corrosive nature of solids observed in the pit on the base metal were investigated. The analysis of the solids showed the presence of multiple layers. The layering was typically an adherent layer followed by a porous layer. The corrosion products from the pits were analyzed by XRD, SEM, EDS, and optical microscopy. At least one sample showed presence of organic matter under SEM. However no further evidence of organic (bacteria) matter was observed on other samples. Electrochemical tests were performed to investigate the corrosive nature of solids using zero resistance ammeter (ZRA) and cyclic polarization methods. ZRA testing revealed that the sample covered with solids is not cathodic to sample without solid deposition. On the contrary the sample without deposited solids showed a nobler potential (40 mV higher) than sample covered under solids. The corrosion current (cyclic polarization) of samples with solids was 15 times higher than sample without solids. Thus this investigation concluded that under the experimented conditions, the presence of deposits caused an increase in corrosion of base metal below the deposits due to a galvanic corrosion mechanism.

Abstract In this paper, solids deposition in 36 inch (0.914 m) x 47 km and 48 inch (1.219 m) x 19 km regions of a transmission oil pipeline are analyzed and several families-of-curves are generated to study the effect of solid particles’ average size; pipeline flow rate, diameter and fluid viscosity; and pipeline length on the deposition rate of solids with average density of 2500 kg/m3. To generate these curves only one variable is changed while other variables are held constant. Obtained family-of-curves may then be used to predict the amount of solids deposition inside the pipeline as a function time. Performed analysis is specifically focused on validating and optimizing the current maintenance pigging schedule under different pipeline operating conditions.

Abstract The effect of an inert solid deposit on uniform CO2 corrosion of mild steel is modeled based on a mechanistic electrochemical CO2 corrosion model. Laboratory testing has shown that the dominant factors introduced by the inert solids deposit are related to surface coverage, where both anodic and cathodic reaction rates are decreased because of less active surface area being exposed. The inert solid deposits also create a mass transfer barrier for corrosive species which limits the rate of the cathodic reactions. An existing mechanistic electrochemical model was modified to account for these effects and was capable of capturing the main features of uniform CO2 corrosion of mild steel under inert solid deposits.

Abstract Non-oxidizing biocides are widely used in industrial water treatment system and are typically formulated as liquid products. Several solid biocide formulations of non-oxidizers are also formulated as solids, including DBNPA (dibromonitrilopropionamide) and bronopol (bromonitropropanediol). Recently, a novel solid formulation of chloromethyl-methylisothiazolone (CMIT/MIT) biocide has been developed for microbial control in small to medium sized cooling water systems. CMIT/MIT is well recognized for its excellent broad spectrum activity versus various types of bacteria, (including Legionella, biofilm-formers and sulfate-reducers), algae and fungi. This new isothiazolone solid tablet dissolves rapidly and has improved safety and handling features versus liquid formulations. The tablet is completely water soluble, leaves no residue, has good compatibility with standard materials of construction, and is wrapped in a protective water soluble outer film. This paper will describe the physical-chemical characteristics of the new solid isothiazolone biocide, provide results of lab studies, and review other non-oxidizing biocide solid formulations currently in use today.

Abstract High-solids, two-component acrylic polyurethane coating formulations were prepared using a new low-viscosity, reactive diluent that incorporates directly into the final polymer network. The resulting acrylic coatings were found to increase the solids content of formulations without compromising mechanical performance. Acrylic polyurethane coating samples containing the diluent were evaluated for weatherability performance via QUV and environmental chamber studies. The kinetic impact of the new reactive diluent on the rate of cure was evaluated using dry time and Brookfield viscosity measurements. Acid additives were found to enable tuning of pot-life values at the higher solid levels enabled by the reactive diluent.

Abstract An electrostatic model is developed to model the pH, temperature, and ionic strength dependence of phosphonate ionization and complex formation. Using the approach, two calcium phosphonate precipitates have been studied. The initial calcium phosphonate phase formed is an amorphous material. Using a dialysis process, the amorphous solid gradually transforms into a crystalline solid via removal of phosphonate. The solubility product of the amorphous phase is 10−49.4. The crystalline material is three orders' magnitudes less soluble than the amorphous phase. The pH, temperature, and ionic strength dependence of the precipitation is discussed. The transformation between the two solids is a function of both temperature and solution to solid ratio. The precipitation--solid transformation--dissolution process can be used to model the retention and release of phosphonate following an inhibitor squeeze in oil and gas fields. Inhibitor squeezes and returns of five different oil and gas wells of widely different geological, physical, and chemical conditions are compared using this mechanistic interpretation.

Abstract The multicomponents of the produced water often results in the formation of the solid solution, such as BaxSr1-xSO4. The suspended solids collected from industry often show the presence of Sr2+ in the BaSO4 scale, indicating the formation of BaxSr1-xSO4 solid solution. Thus, it is important to study the solubility, kinetics and inhibition of the solid solution to have a better prediction of the sulfate scale deposition rate and amount. In this research, we will mainly focus on the effect of the incorporation of Sr2+ on the deposition rate of BaxSr1-xSO4 solid solution scale. The flow through system with two different reactors was used in the experiments. From the experimental results, we can find that the deposition rate of the BaxSr1-xSO4 solid solution decreased significantly with the increase of strontium concentration at a constant barium sulfate supersaturation. The deposition rate decreased up to six times when strontium concentration in aqueous phase increased from [Sr2+] = 0.5[Ba2+] to [Sr2+] = 8[Ba2+], all with SIBarite = 0.9. The decrease of the SI of the BaxSr1-xSO4 solid solution was found with the increase of Sr2+ in the aqueous phase. This might be the reason for the retardation of Sr2+ on BaxSr1-xSO4 deposition rate.

The Church is increasingly facing the problem of a shortage of priests, and there is the expectation that this problem will grow in the future. In some countries many parishes are already without a priest and this situation needs to be addressed. The current Code of Canon Law offers the possibility of parish administration in a so-called solidarity way. In this paper we would like to analyse the institute of parish administration in solidum, which is found only in the current Code of Canon Law, whereas the previous legislation did not recognise this institute. At the same time, we want to gain insight from the experience of some countries that use this model of parish pastoral care, in contrast to the Slovak dioceses, which only take an exceptional approach to it. It is anticipated that in a couple of decades, due to the need for a shortage of priests, there will be a growing need to address the staffing of parishes in this way as well.

Currently, no standard method exists for analyzing insensitive munition (IM) compounds in environmental matrices, with or without concurrent legacy munition compounds, resulting in potentially inaccurate determinations. The primary objective of this work was to develop new methods of extraction, pre-concentration, and analytical separation/quantitation of 17 legacy munition compounds along with several additional IM compounds, IM breakdown products, and other munition compounds that are not currently included in U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8330B. Analytical methods were developed to enable sensitive, simultaneous detection and quantitation of the 24 IM and legacy compounds, including two orthogonal high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) column separations with either ultraviolet (UV) or mass spectrometric (MS) detection. Procedures were developed for simultaneous extraction of all 24 analytes and two surrogates (1,2-dinitrobenzene, 1,2-DNB; o-NBA) from high- and low-level aqueous matrices and solid matrices, using acidification, solid phase extraction (SPE), or solvent extraction (SE), respectively. The majority of compounds were recovered from four tissue types within current limits for solids, with generally low recovery only for Tetryl (from 4 to 62%). A preparatory chromatographic interference removal procedure was adapted for tissue extracts, as various analytical interferences were observed for all studied tissue types.

This present work aims to investigate the solids motion and fluid flow in a two phase fluidized bed via a discrete particle modeling and simulation. The motion of individual particle is based on the fluid force acting on the particle and the contact force between particles. The contact force is models by using the same analogy of spring, dash-pot and friction slider. In addition, the mixing and segregation in beds containing two types of particles with different densities and different size are also studies. Moreover, the effects of superficial gas velocity and bad geometry on the solids movements are also investigated. A solids circulation cell is found when the bed reaches at steady state. The solids ascend at the center with high velocity and descend with low velocity near the wall. The simulation solids flow pattern agrees well with the experimental result obtain by Moslemian (1987). The solids distributions in the bed containing the particles with the density ratios of 1.4 and 1.25 show good mixing. On the other hand the bed with the particle density ratio of 2.5 shows segregating behavior. Similarly, the beds containing the particles with the size ratios of 1.33 and 2.0 show mixing behavior and segregating behavior, respectively. These results obtained from simulation were found to follow the mixing/degregation criteria obtained experimentally by Tanaka et al. (1996). The solids mixing and segregation are not significantly dependent on the superficial gas velocity. The findings of the simulation i.e., solids movement and distribution will be information for understanding the hydrodynamics, mass and heat transfer leading to successfully design and operation of the system. The knowledge of this modeling and simulation is applicable to study the phenomena in the system concerned with granular materials such as multiphase flow reactor and dryer.
