An autoethnografic approach to looking at interpretation and understanding of personal and artistic identity; by juxtaposing the vessel with the decorative and communicative abilities of Morse code and intentionally creating a point of friction where the questions of identity and interpretation can take place. The thesis dicusses the background to the autoethnografic research which is rooted in the artists own questions regarding personal and artistic identity. By using the closed vessel as a vehicle to discuss certain issues raised during the research period, the discussion moves through the physical elements of the project towards the final discussion of the concepts behind the objects made. "Judges should interpret the law, not make it." Nearly everyone assents to this proposition (or something like it), so why is there controversy? In this essay I examine three grounds or sources of disagreement. First, the concept of interpretation is unclear. Second, there is uncertainty about whether legal interpretation raises special interpretive problems. Third, there is an implicit assumption among legal theorists that constitutional interpretation is a specially problematic kind of legal interpretation. My goal is to clarify these and other misconceptions. In Chapter 2 I connect normative theories of adjudication to the concept of interpretation. In Chapters 3 and 4 I develop a conception of interpretation that explains how constitutional interpretation is possible and why it is necessary, thus refuting proponents of the invention and discovery models of adjudication. In Chapters 5 and 6 I develop theories of expression meaning and constitutional interpretation, respectively. Chapters 7 and 8 are critical analyses of the interpretive theories of H. L. A. Hart, Lon L. Fuller, and Ronald Dworkin.

Every image locates intelligence.1 I decided to become an artist due to this premise. Mostof my childhood was spent in front of a TV-screen. By channel surfing across the rangeof our satellite dish I created new narratives of my own, based on the different channelsexisting images. The disappearance of images became as important as their appearance.Art offered me a way of preserving and study these transient images of contemporaryculture.

This thesis is in two chapters. Chapter one is about intentions. Literary theorists have, by and large, dismissed their relevance to interpretation, so it will be useful to consider what exactly is being ignored. Therefore, I devote chapter one to a clarification of the nature and role(s) of intention within the interlocking network of basic propositional attitudes. I argue that intentions incorporate both a functional and a representational dimension, triggering actional mechanisms and structuring the process of practical reasoning.<br>Chapter two is about interpretation. I open the chapter with an examination of extreme conventionalist theses, arguing that their success depends on an unjustifiably strict demarcation between intentionality and textuality. Appropriating aspects of Donald Davidson's work in the philosophy of language, I argue for the recognition of linguistic communication as a form of intentional action. I then defend this thesis against more moderate conventionalist theories to offer a viable approach to the interpretation of literary works.

This thesis analyses which principles should govern the interpretation of tax treaties. This field is complex - because tax treaties have a dual status. Tax treaties are treaties between States - which are governed by public international law, the principles of which have been codified in the 1980 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. Tax treaties are also laws which can affect the domestic rights of taxpayers (and States). Different, and possibly conflicting, principles of interpretation may apply in public international, and in (different) domestic, contexts. This thesis seeks to reconcile these different principles, recognising that tax treaties should be interpreted uniformly. Only if this is done can double taxation (and double non-taxation) be avoided - and reciprocity achieved. This thesis analyses why, and when, the Vienna Convention is relevant in interpreting a tax treaty in a domestic context. It seeks to describe a uniform approach to tax treaty interpretation - which could be applied by domestic courts worldwide. It reaches four main conclusions. Firstly, a textual approach (endorsed as the starting point of interpretation at a public international level by Article 31(1) of the Vienna Convention) should (also) be the starting point of interpretation in a domestic context. Secondly, the proper approach in a domestic context cannot be the mirror image of the Vienna Convention approach. Thirdly, a uniform domestic approach cannot be identical to any one particular State's approach to the interpretation of its domestic tax statutes. Fourthly, a uniform domestic approach should be autonomous - and neutral as between all States. It should recognise a tax treaty's dual status - yet be independent of any interpretative principles which are appropriate only in a purely public international, or a purely domestic, context.

Logical deduction and abstraction from detail are fundamental, yet distinct aspects of reasoning about programs. This dissertation shows that the combination of logic and abstract interpretation enables a unified and simple treatment of several theoretical and practical topics which encompass the model theory of temporal logics, the analysis of satisfiability solvers, and the construction of Craig interpolants. In each case, the combination of logic and abstract interpretation leads to more general results, simpler proofs, and a unification of ideas from seemingly disparate fields. The first contribution of this dissertation is a framework for combining temporal logics and abstraction. Chapter 3 introduces trace algebras, a new lattice-based semantics for linear and branching time logics. A new representation theorem shows that trace algebras precisely capture the standard trace-based semantics of temporal logics. We prove additional representation theorems to show how structures that have been independently discovered in static program analysis, model checking, and algebraic modal logic, can be derived from trace algebras by abstract interpretation. The second contribution of this dissertation is a framework for proving when two lattice-based algebras satisfy the same logical properties. Chapter 5 introduces functions called subsumption and bisubsumption and shows that these functions characterise logical equivalence of two algebras. We also characterise subsumption and bisubsumption using fixed points and finitary logics. We prove a representation theorem and apply it to derive the transition system analogues of subsumption and bisubsumption. These analogues strictly generalise the well studied notions of simulation and bisimulation. Our fixed point characterisations also provide a technique to construct property preserving abstractions. The third contribution of this dissertation is abstract satisfaction, an abstract interpretation framework for the design and analysis of satisfiability procedures. We show that formula satisfiability has several different fixed point characterisations, and that satisfiability procedures can be understood as abstract interpreters. Our main result is that the propagation routine in modern sat solvers is a greatest fixed point computation involving abstract transformers, and that clause learning is an abstract transformer for a form of negation. The final contribution of this dissertation is an abstract interpretation based analysis of algorithms for constructing Craig interpolants. We identify and analyse a lattice of interpolant constructions. Our main result is that existing algorithms are two of three optimal abstractions of this lattice. A second new result we derive in this framework is that the lattice of interpolation algorithms can be ordered by logical strength, so that there is a strongest and a weakest possible construction.

The photographic series Ideal Cities that I started in 2011 is inspired by the conflict between my idea of the “west” and my evolving experience in the United States. What struck me was the popularity of what I see as model experience – a spatial experience controlled by the Spectacle. In the terms of the Situationist International and its most prominent figure Guy Debord, the Spectacle is the collapse of reality into the streams of images, products and activities sanctioned by centralized monopolist business or state bureaucracy. Thus, personal experience is replaced with preconceived notions, which control the way people perceive and understand their surroundings.

The first half of this report contains the concept of interpretation and its relationship with the written language. In addition, it proposes how the ambiguity of the language is one of the main problems for legal interpretation. This part also proposes a route for the legal interpretation in Tax Law. Gescannte und vektorisierte technische Zeichnungen werden automatisch unter Nutzung eines Netzes von Modellen in eine hochwertige Datenstruktur migriert. Die Modelle beschreiben die Inhalte der Zeichnungen hierarchisch und deklarativ. Modelle für einzelne Bestandteile der Zeichnungen können paarweise unabhängig entwickelt werden. Dadurch werden auch sehr komplexe Zeichnungsklassen wie Elektroleitungsnetze oder Gebäudepläne zugänglich. Die Modelle verwendet der neue, sogenannte Y-Algorithmus: Hypothesen über die Deutung lokaler Zeichnungsinhalte werden hierarchisch generiert. Treten bei der Nutzung konkurrierender Modelle Konflikte auf, werden diese protokolliert. Mittels des Konfliktbegriffes können konsistente Interpretationen einer kompletten Zeichnung abstrakt definiert und während der Analyse einer konkreten Zeichnung bestimmt werden. Ein wahrscheinlichkeitsbasiertes Gütemaß bewertet jede dieser alternativen, globalen Interpretationen. Das Suchen einer bzgl. dieses Maßes optimalen Interpretation ist ein NP-hartes Problem. Ein Branch and Bound-Algorithmus stellt die adäquate Lösung dar.

This thesis attempts to explain exactly how it is that we interpret metaphor. A brief historical overview of the substitution, comparison and interaction methods is offered. Then the basic steps within these theories are aligned with current thoughts on the interpretation of metaphor from within semantic theory. Because of the self-imposed restrictions within semantic theory, a semantic interpretation of metaphor is an extremely limited one. The problems of definition of meaning, the allowance of deviant language and the nature of the relationship between syntax and semantics are considered before adapting Samuel Levin's Semantics of Metaphor. Levin offers a formula, based on semantic theory, whereby a good basic framework is provided to outline the steps involved in the understanding of metaphor. By extending Levin's theory and by testing this extended version against complex metaphor, a more comprehensive approach to the interpretation of metaphor is offered. Furthermore, application of the extended theory to increasingly complex metaphors reveals a consistent and predictable pattern traceable throughout the interpretation process which, in turn, can only be reflective of the organizational patterns of human thought.<br>Arts, Faculty of<br>English, Department of<br>Graduate

L? ritual (禮) is one of the most distinctive features of Confucianism (r? ji?, 儒家), but interpreters have yet to agree on the extent of its functions and whether the Confucians provide any justification of its use. Contemporary attempts to derive such justification have typically relied upon explaining l?'s relationship with r?n humaneness (仁), another core concept for Confucianism that is frequently given great prominence in Confucian ethics. Drawing upon such approaches, I propose that at least one aspect of l?'s function is best understood as being bound-up with that of r?n and that this function arguably justifies Confucian appeals to l? as a guide to conduct. My approach is distinct from previous interpretations, however, in that I argue that l? serves metaphorically as the language by which attitudes conducive to r?n are managed and expressed, and that the successful application of l?, including its use in symbolizing ethically significant normative statuses, contributes to the Confucian ideal of harmony (h?, 和) on both interpersonal and intrapersonal levels. Interpretation which is sensitive to the creative past can be given a justifying foundation by extensive description of ways in which we employ perceptions of the artist's significance. Such a justification, based only on description, can be measured for success against an ideal where justification and explanation would issue from a strong, independent artist-artwork tie. The ideal is approached, but is itself impossible: connections between interpretation and the creative past are heterogeneous and the sensitivity of interpretation to variations in creative history fails to show that interpretation follows any general principle. Interpretation creates a past that is part fictional in several ways for expressive purposes, and a part fictional artist again undermines a general, strict connection between true meaning and the real past. When interpreters hold theoretical beliefs to the contrary, interpretation suffers distortion. Neither can a strong tie be uncovered through ontological proposals. Apparent strong ties turn out to be justified stipulations for practical, imaginative, interpretative use of the creative past. Justified interpretation must support principal organising ideas. Otherwise, however, interpreters exploit the creative past; they are not held in its grip. As dermed, the ideal justification would: (1) press the justified practice upon interpreters, and (2) ensure that meaning is objective. A foundation based on description dilutes but approaches this ideal. Taking each of the two features in turn: First, rather than mandate the practice, connections between the practice and its environment create, as a minimum, a defensible case against arbitrariness. This "environment" includes an address made to artworks which is akin to an address to mind. Non-arbitrariness is reinforced when any ideological attack on the artist must fail in principle to promise ideologically acceptable alternatives. Second, a descriptive justification rejects oruy objectivity of the wrong kind. This leads to a particular view of alleged constraints on interpretative practice

The system, called UDSI (user-directed sketch interpretation), aims to provide drawing freedom by allowing the user to sketch entirely off-line using a pure pen-and-paper interface. The results of the drawing can then be presented to UDSI, which recognizes shapes and lines and text areas that the user can then polish as desired. The system can infer multiple interpretations for a given sketch, to aid during the user's polishing stage. The UDSI program offers three novel features. First, it implements a greedy algorithm for determing alternative interpretations of the user's original pen drawing. Second, it introduces a user interface for selecting from these multiple candidate interpretations. Third, it implements a circle recognizer using a novel circle-detection algorithm and combines it with other hand-coded recognizers to provide a robust sketch recognition system.<br>by Matthew J. This thesis examines the effect that functional heads have on the interpretation of arguments. It focuses on the functional head Agr, which is implicated in predicate-argument agreement relations; the import that other functional heads have on interpretation is a subsidiary concern. The argument of the thesis goes as follows: firstly, reference must be made to both an independently projecting functional head Agr and to a level of discourse representation in order to adequately analyse the phenomenon of predicate argument agreement. This theory sheds light on an unusual complementarity between agreement and overt arguments in Celtic because it provides a natural constraint on morphological feature checking mechanisms. The thesis shows that functional heads are therefore implicated in the interpretation of arguments.

Gescannte und vektorisierte technische Zeichnungen werden automatisch unter Nutzung eines Netzes von Modellen in eine hochwertige Datenstruktur migriert. Die Modelle beschreiben die Inhalte der Zeichnungen hierarchisch und deklarativ. Modelle für einzelne Bestandteile der Zeichnungen können paarweise unabhängig entwickelt werden. Dadurch werden auch sehr komplexe Zeichnungsklassen wie Elektroleitungsnetze oder Gebäudepläne zugänglich. Die Modelle verwendet der neue, sogenannte Y-Algorithmus: Hypothesen über die Deutung lokaler Zeichnungsinhalte werden hierarchisch generiert. Treten bei der Nutzung konkurrierender Modelle Konflikte auf, werden diese protokolliert. Mittels des Konfliktbegriffes können konsistente Interpretationen einer kompletten Zeichnung abstrakt definiert und während der Analyse einer konkreten Zeichnung bestimmt werden. Ein wahrscheinlichkeitsbasiertes Gütemaß bewertet jede dieser alternativen, globalen Interpretationen. Das Suchen einer bzgl. dieses Maßes optimalen Interpretation ist ein NP-hartes Problem. Ein Branch and Bound-Algorithmus stellt die adäquate Lösung dar.

An attempt is made to investigate the housing culture in Seoul to answer the question: how do old spatial values interact with a new domestic setting The argument of this research relates cultural interpretation of housing to plan morphology, and demonstrates how social values and domestic space are interrelated and how their interactions have driven the evolution of housing through the twentieth century. For hundreds of years, the housing form and culture in Seoul have been in consistency with minor changes. After the Korean War (1950-1953), however, a fast and fundamental change was started. A huge amount of houses were constructed with a modern design concept which is completely different from that of the traditional courtyard house. The first part of the analysis focuses on the diachronic process where the traditional courtyard house, which used to be a single dwelling prototype for centuries, is transformed to modern houses. Using space syntax methods, it is shown how old activities are re-accommodated and their symbolic meanings re-negotiated in the modem setting. The second part of the analysis focuses on modern apartment houses that became the most dominant dwelling type in the city from the 70s on. A new graph theoretic method is proposed to facilitate the mathematical exploration of sample plans, and it is revealed that the old topological relations of space still operate within the formal constraints of the apartment houses. Synthesising these analyses, it is evaluated that what appears on the surface to be a radical change preserves at a deeper level the genotypical values of space that generate a gradual and continuous evolution. The old and new houses in Seoul are, therefore, separate only at the physical level, not at the spatial level.

This dissertation investigates the interaction between the basic rules for tense interpretation, on the one hand, and temporal types of VPs or sentences, time expressions and syntactic distribution of tense forms, on the other. This dissertation proposes an analysis in which each tense form is associated with at least three time identities, the zero time point, the event time and the reference time. The zero time is defined as the time from which a situation is considered and interpreted, the event time as the time at which a situation takes place and the reference time is the time at which the situation holds and which is part of the event time under consideration. Concerning the temporal structures of situations expressed by VPs or sentences, this dissertation proposes a six-type temporal classification and treats temporal types not as atomic but as reducible to temporal features. By so doing, this dissertation brings to light the internal structure among various temporal types. Regarding the relation between tense and time expressions, this dissertation analyzes it to be one of temporal inclusion and provides a successful account of why time adverbs do not necessarily mark both ending points of a given homogeneous situation, though this is true with a nonhomogeneous situation. In accounting for tense interpretation in complement clauses, this dissertation maintains that complement tense forms and matrix tense forms can be interpreted in the same way and they differ only in the interpretation of the zero time point. In the matrix clause, tense is interpreted with respect to the speech time and, in the complement clause, tense is interpreted relative to the reference time of the matrix clause. Because the zero time is used instead of the speech time in the proposed basic tense rules, these rules are general and powerful enough to be applicable to tenses in any syntactic environment.

This dissertation is a study of the process through which Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, by synthesizing doctrines and texts into consistent models, integrates views of reality within doctrinal and soteriological systems. It consists of an analysis of the most fundamental doctrinal tension found in the Tibetan tradition, namely the apparent inconsistency of doctrines belonging to the negative Mādhyamika and to the more affirmative Yogācāra trends of Mahāyāna Buddhism. As a case study aiming to provide a first systematic examination of that problematic, the dissertation surveys and analyzes Tibetan interpretation of the set of texts referred to as the Five Treatises of Maitreya (byams chos sde lnga), and at the way those interpretations deal with the doctrinal tensions found in that set of text. In addition to providing a recension of major interpretations of the Five Treatises developed between 1100 and 1500, a detailed account is given of the model of interpretation given by gSer mdog Paṇ chen Śākya mchog ldan, a famous teacher of the Sa skya school of Tibetan Buddhism. When confronted with the features of other interpretations, Śākya mchog ldan's interpretation of the Five Treatises, which proceeds primarily by allowing a plurality of views to be maintained even at the level of definitive meaning, , provides us with a new insight in the Tibetan philosophical tradition: the most fundamental dimension of philosophical reconciliation of doctrinal views, especially of the kind found in the Five Treatises, can be described as pertaining to textual hermeneutics. Moreover, Śākya mchog ldan's contribution to that domain of Buddhist thought, by placing hermeneutics at the very centre of his system of Buddhist doctrine and practice, suggests that hermeneutics is a fundamental category of all Buddhist philosophical debates, and that it should be part of any attempt to understand the Tibetan philosophical tradition.<br>La présente thèse consiste en une étude du processus par lequel la philosophie bouddhiste tibétaine intègre des descriptions de la réalité au sein de systèmes doctrinaires et sotériologiques, c'est-à-dire en effectuant la synthèse de différentes doctrines et textes. Elle présente une analyse du plus important sujet de tension doctrinaire de la tradition tibétaine : les contradictions apparaissant au sein des deux courant principaux du bouddhisme Mahāyāna, le Madhyamaka et le Yogācāra. Cette problématique n'ayant pas jusqu'ici été étudiée systématiquement, la thèse propose une étude de cas visant à en produire, pour la première fois une analyse systématique. Le cas étudié est celui des interprétations tibétaines du groupe de texte appelé les cinq Traités de Maitreya (byams chos sde lnga), en particulier de la façon dont ces interprétations parviennent à résoudre les tensions doctrinaires présentes dans ces textes. The “graph-as-picture misconception” (GAPM) occurs when an abstract representation (e.g., a line graph) is interpreted as a picture of an object (e.g., a mountain). Previous research on students' line graph interpretations has focused on secondary school level and above, thus this research extends the investigation of the GAPM to primary school level. Particularly, it investigates: which type of environment is more effective for improving young students' line graph interpretations; and how can be assessed their interpretations. A pilot study involved an improved version of Janvier's (1978) paper-and-pencil tasks (to create an interactive learning environment) and it investigated how to incorporate a card-sort task (to assess students' interpretations). Different touch-screen technologies were considered too. Two experiments were conducted. In experiment one, 37 participants (third to sixth year) were assessed in their graphical knowledge through a picture/diagram card-sort task and a “pictorial group” was formed using participants' interpretations. During the intervention, students performed an active or passive mode of a Racing Car activity in which they moved or watched a car along a track while its speed/distance graph was plotted concurrently alongside. The results suggested that a wide variety of pictorial interpretations exist and students seemed to benefit from the active modality. In experiment two, 38 fifth-year students performed different assessment tests. Extending experiment one, a “drawing the graph” mode and its passive modality were included. In that mode, students modified a plotted line of a speed/distance graph, which was used by the system to race a car along a track. Previous results were not confirmed: only students under the “drawing the graph” modality (including the “pictorial group”) significantly improved their interpretations; and different assessment tests seemed better to observe students' various interpretations. In conclusion, a learning environment that allows interaction with the representation could potentially improve students' interpretations, which might be better assessed through a rich set of tests.
