The conformational preference of vicinal or 1,2-phenyl groups is probed in two classes of ring-substituted 1,2-diphenylbicyclooctene (stilbenoid) hydrocarbons 1a-1d and 2a-2c. UV-vis spectroscopy reveals, and X-ray crystallography verifies, the intramolecular (edge-to-face) orientation for the phenyl-phenyl interaction in stilbenoids 1a-1d. Most importantly, when two pairs of ortho-methyl substituents are present, the cofacial phenyl groups in the stilbenoid donors are established by X-ray crystallography and spectrally observed in the cation radicals (2a+.-2c+.) by the appearance of new bands with strong absorptions in the near IR with λmax = 1100-1315 nm, analogous to those previously observed in intermolecular (aromatic) interactions of aromatic cation radicals.Key words: stilbenoid hydrocarbon, cation radical, aryl-aryl interaction.

Carbazole derivatives are important compounds from medicinal point of view because of their widespread biological significance. In the present work two compounds 7-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-methyl- 12-(phenylsulfonyl)-12H-naphtho[1,2-b]carbazole (I) and 7-ethyl-5-methyl-12-(phenylsulfonyl)-12Hnaphtho[ 1,2-b]carbazole (II) have been synthesized and characterized by XRD, Hirshfeld surface, energy framework and docking analysis. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the compound I crystallizes in monoclinic system with space group P21/n whereas compound II crystallizes in triclinic with space group P-1. In both compounds there are two intramolecular C-H···O hydrogen bonds, which generates two S (6) ring motifs. The crystal packing is stabilized through weak C-H···O and C-H···Cl interactions. The molecules also features C-H···π interactions. The intermolecular interactions of both compounds were analyzed using Hirshfeld surface analysis and two dimensional fingerprint plots, which was confirmed by the XRD data. Energy frameworks were used to calculate the intermolecular interaction energies and their distribution over the crystal structure. Molecular docking studies show that the compounds exhibits antitumor activity.

The title compound, C11H9N3OS, (I), crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n. The molecular conformation is nearly planar and features an intramolecular chalcogen bond between the thiophene S and the imine N atoms. Within the crystal, the strongest interactions between molecules are the N—H...O hydrogen bonds, which organize them into inversion dimers. The dimers are linked through short C—H...N contacts and are stacked into layers propagating in the (001) plane. The crystal structure features π–π stacking between the pyridine aromatic ring and the azomethine double bond. The calculated energies of pairwise intermolecular interactions within the stacks are considerably larger than those found for the interactions between the layers.

Matrix Isolation Infrared Spectroscopy has been proposed as an alternative for detection and quantification of site-specific isotopic signals. 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy benzaldehyde (vanillin) is used in an attempt to make use of its asymmetry and distinguish between the vibrations of its three functional groups, assigning structural effects to specific locations in the molecule. After achieving an apparent near-isolated state, the role of isotopic signals in the resulting splitting effects of the predicted isolated-peak structure are discussed, as well as possible significant contributions from conformational, aggregation and steric effects from the matrix on the guest molecule. Density Functional Theory is considered as a method of simulating and predicting the behaviour of the molecule in the isolated phase, and simulated spectra are produced to attempt to replicate and assign the observed phenomena, predicting the positions and intensities of isotopic peaks based on natural isotopic abundances, and estimated conformer populations calculated from the energy levels of each structure. In a novel experiment to observe changes in momentum distributions in a solution of poly-N-isopropyl acrylamide (pNIPAAm) passing through a temperature-induced phase change, deuterated polymer/ solvent mixtures were studied on the VESUVIO instrument at the ISIS RAL facility, and the analysis of that data is presented. pNIPAAm and related compounds display a critical temperature for solvation above which they precipitate due to competition between solvent-polymer H-bonding verses internal H-bonding structure; though better stabilised by the additional hydrophobic effects of methanol, pure water solvation shows this behaviour. It is additionally seen that the mixture of water and methanol results in a depression of this Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) relative to the pure solvents, thought to be due to solvent-solvent interactions limiting solvent availability to the polymer. Deuterium labels were introduced in neutron scattering experiments, and expected to show significant momentum change with this collapse of hydrogen bonding.

In this work, new organic emitting materials have been developed for applications in the field of light emitting diodes or organic lasers. First of all, several molecules of the Donor-Acceptor type incorporating various electro-deficient nitrogenous hearts have been successfully prepared, their design being designed with the aim of obtaining TADF emitters. Their photophysical properties have been studied in solution and in the solid state. In these structures, intramolecular charge transfer is produced via intermolecular interactions between the D and A groups, and their study revealed that some of them exhibit a TADF character. The electroluminescence properties of the most promising compounds have also been studied in OLED configuration, even if to date the observed yields remain low. Then, a series of gain molecules based on pi-conjugated structures, still consisting of nitrogenous cores, have been successfully synthesized for laser applications. Their chemical structures have been characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and high-resolution mass spectroscopy (HRMS). Good luminescence properties such as high quantum photoluminescence yields (PLQY) and short fluorescence lifetimes have been demonstrated in solution and in the solid state for most derivatives. Finally, some emissive materials exhibit good amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties with low threshold values, and optically pumped laser devices could also be made from some of the derivatives of the series

What attributes can make a street become more sociable and create a vibrant streetscape where people feel comfortable spending time? The purpose of this study is to find these attributes and apply this knowledge in a case study on Drottninggatan and Strøget to identify their strengths and weaknesses as well as providing recommendations on how the streets can become more sociable public spaces. To achieve this a diverse selection of methods will be used. A literature review with emphasis on theories by Mehta (2013), Jacobs (1995) and Whyte (1980) will form the foundation for the study. Furthermore a combination of conventional methods such as observations and counting/tracking and more experience-based methods as City Walks and storytelling will form the core of the case study. During the case study a number of important urban elements arose with the key features being the use of open spaces, urban furniture and their positioning, the use of green structure and the presence of events on the street. The architectural ensemble is to be considered important for the framing of the public realm to a certain degree since it has a strong effect on how a space is perceived and the fact that if inappropriately used it can give rise to negative experiences of the street. Strøget and Drottninggatan show examples of both good and bad practice and both have aspects to improve to support a more sociable public space, even though Strøget have to be considered as being a few steps ahead.<br>Vilka attribut kan få en gata att bli mer socialt tilltalande och skapa ett levande gaturum där människor trivs att vara?

A series of conformationally constrained 2,6-bisferrocenylphenyl thioethers were synthesized via Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reactions. Structural information was obtained using X-ray crystallography and dynamic ¹H NMR spectroscopic studies, showing highly constrained m-terphenyl systems. Interaction of the ferrocene moieties through space mediated by the sulfur were studied by ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy and DFT computations. Electrochemical results show two, fully reversible 1e⁻ redox processes for the ferrocenes where the separation of peaks is affected by both solvent and supporting electrolyte, suggesting significant electrostatic interaction which is further confirmed in the gas phase by UPS studies. To determine if these interactions could be observed at greater distances, extended m-terphenyl complexes were shown in which 2-sulfur and 3-aromatic moieties were synthesized using a developed selective Suzuki-Miyaura monocoupling procedure in good yields. In these systems, interaction was not observed by electrochemistry or UPS. This suggests the distance between redox centers (~16 Å) is too great for electrostatic interaction, even though there is enhanced interactions observed in the truncated systems. Two new bisferrocenylphenylsulfoxides were also synthesized and studied to determine the effect of the polar sulfoxide bond on through space interaction between the ferrocene moieties. The electronic and redox properties of these compounds were studied by ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and DFT computations. Electrochemical results for 2,6-bis(ferrocenyl) thioanisole S-oxide show two, fully reversible one electron redox processes. The initial oxidation shows a 62 mV negative shift compared to the sulfide analog 2,6-bis(ferrocenyl)thioanisole, and an increased peak separation for the oxidations of 160 mV. No peak separation is observed in the extended sulfoxide system. No intervalence charge transfer band was observed in the truncated sulfoxide complex by monitoring the UV-Vis/NIR spectroscopy of the mixed valence complex, ruling out electronic communication. Thus, the through space electrostatic interactions of the sulfoxide causes the non-equivalent ferrocenes in the truncated system to have different oxidation potentials. Synthesis was developed towards the synthesis of 1,8-bisferrocenyl-9-(alkylthio) anthracene complexes. It was observed that due to steric congestion at the C9 position of the anthracene scaffold, standard thionation reactions did not proceed as expected. Instead, the reaction of 1,8-dibromo-9-anthrone with Lawesson reagent afforded the intramolecular nucleophilic aromatic substitution cyclization product in quantitative yields. The reaction of the same anthrone under studied dithioketal formation conditions led to sulfur-rearrangement, giving the undesired 1,8-bisferrocenyl-10-(ethylthio)anthracene derivative, as confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Attempted Newman-Kwart rearrangement of 1, 8-dibromoanthracen-9-yl) dimethylcarbamothioate afforded no significant observed product formation, and decomposition of starting materials when heated for extended times. 1,8-bisferrocenyl-9-(methoxy)anthracene was synthesized and structurally characterized by dynamic X-ray crystallography to confirm connectivity. Electrochemical experiments show 2 reversible redox processes separated by 115 mV. Chemical oxidation experiments show unexpected, strong electronic coupling in the mixed valence complex. This coupling was characterized by near-IR absorption at 941 nm, indicating intervalence charge transfer (IVCT). Single electron reduction of 1,8-bisferrocenyl-9-(methoxy)anthracene, followed by quenching with various electrophiles afforded an inseparable mixture of products, one of which was identified by mass spectrometry as the desired 1,8-bisferrocenyl-9-(methylthio)anthracene product. However, this complex was not separable from the mixture and further characterization was not possible. All other routes attempted to incorporate sulfur into the system afforded no conversion of starting materials or decomposition of the reaction mixture.

My PhD thesis focuses on the development of the through-bond and through-space correlation solid-state NMR experiments involving half-integer quadrupolar nuclei in order to characterize atomic-level structure of inorganic materials. This thesis consists of two part.First, we introduce 2D 71Ga-77Se through-bond and through-space correlation experiments. Such correlations are achieved using (i) the J-RINEPT method with 71Ga excitation and 77Se detection, as well as (ii) the J- or D-HMQC schemes with 71Ga excitation and detection. These methods are applied to the crystalline β-Ga2Se3 and the 0.2Ga2Se3-0.8GeSe2 glass. We also report 2D 71Ga STMAS spectrum of β-Ga2Se3 using QCPMG detection at high magnetic field, high Magic-Angle Spinning frequency, and high RF-field.Second, we introduce novel sequences using indirect detection to correlate quadrupolar nuclei and spin-1/2 isotopes, other than 1H and 19F. These sequences use γ-encoded symmetry-based RNnν schemes that reintroduce the space component |m| = 1 of the heteronuclear dipolar coupling. These schemes can be applied to the indirectly detected spin in Dipolar-mediated Heteronuclear Multiple-Quantum Correlation (D-HMQC) sequence or to the detected isotope in a novel sequence, named Dipolar-mediated Heteronuclear Universal-Quantum Correlation (D-HUQC). The performance of the sequences have been compared to conventional D-HMQC with R3 or SFAM recoupling via SIMPSON simulations and NMR experiments, including 13C-15N heteronuclear correlation on glycine and 31P-27Al ones on VPI-5 and Na7(AlP2O7)4PO4

The aim of the thesis is to study rock wettability change effects caused by Low Salinity brine injection as tertiary recovery method. To identify the underlying mechanism or mechanisms of additional oil recovery X-Ray imaging technology was applied. We have also imaged the end-Point saturations of filled by brine and water core samples. Once the primary drainage is realized we carried out two phases imbibitions: with high salinity brine (waterflooding) and with low salinity brine (tertiary recovery mode). The wettability analysis at pore scale permitted to put in evidence the thermal and saline effects playing a decisive role in rock wettability. We have showed wettability changes are not caused by only electrical double layer expansion, however wettability changes was shown. These changes are explained by wettability transition of second order and observed not only for oil droplet on brine, but also for oil deposited on glass substrate. Finally, the pore space wettability needs to be evidenced at sub-Micrometric scale that is new for the petroleum domain

As the cinematic experience becomes subsumed into today's ubiquitous technologies of seeing, contemporary artworks lift the cinematic out of the immateriality of the film screen and separate it into its physical components within the gallery space. How to read these reformulations of the cinematic medium - and their critique of what it is and has been? In Theorizing Cinema Through Contemporary Art: Expanding Cinema, leading film theorists consider artworks that incorporate, restage, and re-present cinema's configuration of the key categories of space, experience, presence/absence, production and consumption, technology, myth, perception, event, and temporality, so interrogating the creation, appraisal, and evolution of film theory as channeled through contemporary art. This book takes film theory as a blueprint for the moving image, and juxtaposes it with artworks that render cinema as a material object. In the process, it unfolds a complex relationship between a theory and a practice that have commonly been seen as virtually incompatible, renewing our understanding of each and, more to the point, their interactions.

Communication is at the heart of politics, and certainly in East Asia, where vibrant media systems and cultural industries connect with political processes that range from the democratic to autocratic. If we are to understand East Asian societies, and 21st-century politics more broadly, we need to take media and communication seriously. This textbook provides a flexible toolbox of methods and theories for studying political communication. Taking its examples and exercises from Japan, Korea, and the Chinese-speaking world, it walks readers through core issues, media contents, and communicative modes. Readers will learn how to systematically analyse the politics of media environments, written and spoken words, images and visual designs, moving image, space and spatial interactions, (video)games, and more. The chapters can be used individually or, optionally, as a playful ‘gamified’ course that offers learners a first-hand experience of how complex ‘information societies’ incentivise behaviour.

This chapter draws together theoretical and methodological threads from the rest of the book while proposing a broader analytical model, in which various tonal styles—not only pantriadicism—interact. This model is based on a conception of triadic tonality space in which three paradigmatic axes (diatonicity, centricity, and functionality) create numerous distinct and modifiable tonal styles. These distinct styles are shown to harbor persistent associations in mainstream film music. It is argued that wondrous harmony often involves motion through triadic tonality space. A cinematically well-established example of this is the chromatically modulating cadence (CMC); the role of cadences in general for organizing film time is emphasized. The dialectic between tonal idioms has been mined for its connotative power by composers wishing to portray the various wondrous affects, and a variety of examples drawn from films that dramatize the “beatific sublime” are investigated, concluding with Alfred Newman’s The Song of Bernadette.

Bicycling, Motorcycling, Rhetoric, and Space draws from cultural studies, rhetorical theory, and political philosophy to examine bicycling and motorcycling as serious forms of communication and even thought. By analyzing how everyday movements function in modern and postmodern contexts, Hunter H. Fine is able to determine the social meanings behind human powered and motorized forms of cycling. Through the lenses of sophistic rhetoric and poststructuralist theory, the author uncovers how such mobilities inform our thoughts and interactions. Throughout history, this informing process has promoted specific ways of thinking that have resulted in moments of protest, conquest, awareness, and transgression, which all involve a cycling rhetoric. This book contributes to various academic fields within the liberal arts and humanities while further establishing bicycling and motorcycling as important social, theoretical, and political areas of inquiry. Scholars of rhetoric, communication studies, cultural studies, and philosophy will find this book of particular interest.

As the cinematic experience becomes subsumed into today's ubiquitous technologies of seeing, contemporary artworks lift the cinematic out of the immateriality of the film screen and separate it into its physical components within the gallery space. How to read these reformulations of the cinematic medium – and their critique of what it is and has been?

This chapter highlights negotiations of meanings a Western church worker encountered in a Chadian congregation. For many mainline churches, “missions agencies,” focused on proselytization, are not the sole or even primary mode of outreach; “development agencies,” focused on local economic and social development, complement them. These two types of agencies are tied, through institutional memories in Western and African churches, to the cultural, including musical, practices of missions. The chapter retells the story of a Western development worker who frames her role as “learner” but finds she is understood as missionary “teacher” and is asked to teach and not learn music. Music is a persistent indicator of a history of missionary interactions between Chadian and Western Christians that lends meanings to and constrains present-day transnational interactions between them; it can provide a shared space of practice that is not contiguous with the “meanings” of the music under discussion.

Abstract Military uses in space are rapidly changing and expanding, challenging both states and non-governmental agencies in identifying and applying the governing rules. In the midst of these challenges, states, policymakers, and practitioners must engage with new, real circumstances in space, not merely hypothetical threats or problems. As a contribution to the understudied but crucial field, this book is interdisciplinary in nature—drawing on space law, national security law, technology, international law, and diplomacy. The book serves as the first comprehensive examination of the field. In it, all three phases of military space interactions are analysed (during times of peace, tension or crisis, and armed conflict), with relevance to both the public and private space sectors. The book explores the interaction of different legal regimes, including space law, the UN Charter, other treaty-based regimes, as well as international humanitarian law. Through an extensive consultation process with state and NGO representatives from across the globe, the book serves as a practical and reliable resource in the emerging field of space law. It is a critical resource for any entity navigating the increasingly consequential subject of space operations by providing an outline for more predictable and peaceful cooperation.

AbstractThis chapter sets out to explore how urban agriculture can contribute to the development of the capabilities of gardeners and the larger urban community. Our study of cases in Aarhus (Denmark) and Rotterdam (the Netherlands) aimed to understand how different municipalities facilitate urban agriculture and how different urban agriculture initiatives perform in public space. In the analysis of the initiatives, we drew on a conceptualization of publicness focused on interactions in and products from physical space that link people. With an emphasis on a definition of public that is greater than the gardeners involved in each initiative, we identify four trajectories in urban agriculture’s public service, which include increasing access and animation in public space, contributing to social services, producing and distributing food, and building communities to spread cultivation knowledge. These trajectories structure our presentation and discussion of selected urban agriculture initiatives. While not mutually exclusive, the four areas of service place different strains upon the public space ideal of physical access. We find that food production and social services may be little suited for urban spaces that demand high levels of public access, though these benefits can reach broad public if localized and facilitated appropriately.

AbstractMolecular crystals have a regularly packed structure, and their physical properties often depend on intramolecular and intermolecular interactions. Here, we review the crystal jumping phenomena under a thermal stimulus (thermosalient phenomenon). Thermosalient phenomena are characterized by thermal phase transitions and anisotropic lattice expansion/contraction at a microscopic scale and jumping behavior through bending/deformation/rotation/cleavage of crystals at a macroscopic scale. The absence of strong intermolecular interaction in the crystal and the misalignment of the crystal plane associated with the phase transition are explained as factors causing the thermosalient phenomena. In this chapter, various case studies with representative molecular crystals that exhibit the thermosalient phenomenon are explained in detail.

Abstract As an epilogue to the Springer book series, this chapter assesses the long-term impact of the Knowledge and Space symposium series, which spanned over two decades, in the context of an ongoing scholarly debate regarding the value of academic conferences. Originating in 2005 and concluding with its 20th volume in 2025, the series brought together scholars from diverse disciplines to explore the intersection of geography and knowledge. Through a tailored survey distributed to nearly 300 participants, we evaluate the series’ effectiveness in fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, advancing spatial concepts in the social sciences, and building an enduring network of scholarship. The findings underscore the benefits of the series’ unique design—small, diverse groups, closed sessions without an audience, and a mix of formal and informal interactions—highlighting how these elements contributed to meaningful knowledge exchange and professional development. The epilogue reflects on the series’ contributions to academic discourse and the implications for the broader debate on the utility and structure of academic conferencing.

Abstract Mixed farming systems are a sustainable closed-loop model for crop–livestock systems, focusing on structure, practices, logic, social, cultural, economic, climatic, and institutional capital interactions. However, literature on crop–livestock–soil–water interactions is scarce, with few separating crop and livestock water productivity in mixed systems. Crop–livestock water productivity is influenced by land management, biophysical, and socioeconomic factors. Integrating thinking in space and time can help understand these interrelationships and analyse their influence on crop–livestock production. Improving livestock water productivity (LWP) is crucial due to rising consumer demand, competition for global freshwater, and water rivalry. Strategies include promoting livestock production, managing grazing, water, livestock marketing, animal health, and minimizing environmental effects.

An extraction method is proposed to investigate blade vortex interaction noise emitted during helicopter transient maneuvering flight. The extraction method allows for the investigation of blade vortex interactions, independent of other sound sources. It is based on filtering the spectral representation of experimentally acquired full-scale helicopter acoustic data. The data is first transformed into time-frequency space through the wavelet transformation, with blade vortex interactions identified and filtered by their high amplitude, high frequency impulsive content. The filtered wavelet coefficients are then inverse transformed to create a pressure signature solely related to blade vortex interactions. Analysis on a synthetic data set is conducted, and it is shown that blade vortex interactions can be accurately extracted so long as the blade vortex interaction peak energy signal is greater or equal to the energy in the main rotor harmonic. A brief analysis shows that the extraction method performs admirably throughout a fast advancing side roll maneuver. Using this method, it was shown that peak blade vortex interaction noise levels are linked directly to the roll rate of the vehicle, and are directed towards the retreating side during the transient portion of the maneuver.

The determination of the design space (DS) in a pharmaceutical process is a crucial aspect of the quality-by-design (QbD) initiative which promotes quality built into the desired product. This is achieved through a deep understanding of how the critical quality attributes (CQAs) and process parameters (CPPs) interact that have been demonstrated to provide quality assurance. For computational inexpensive models, the original process model can be directly deployed to identify the design space. One such crucial process is the Tablet Press (TP), which directly compresses the powder blend into individual units of the final product or adds dry or wet granulation to meet specific formulation needs. In this work, we identify the design space of input variables in a TP such that there is a (probabilistic) guarantee that the tablets meet the quality constraints under a set of operating conditions. A reduced-order model of TP is assigned for this purpose where the effects of lubricants and glidants are used to characterize the design space to achieve the desired tablet CQAs. The probabilistic design space, which takes into account interactions between crucial process parameters and important quality characteristics including model uncertainty, is also approximated because of the high cost associated with the comprehensive experiments.

Recent advances in state space modeling of the aerodynamic interactions between rotors in advanced coaxial configurations have allowed for increased understanding of the stability and controllability of such aircraft. However, modern aerodynamic analysis tools such as free wake models have shown that the behavior of the inflow of a coaxial configuration may not exhibit only first order behavior as some models suggest. Furthermore, it is clear that tip-path plane motion of a coaxial rotor can have an impact on the inflow behavior through wake distortion, and so the inflow response is likely higher order in nature. It is unclear what effects such behavior would have on the prediction of handling qualities and the design of control systems. The objective of this paper is to extend a system identification method to the extraction of a second order inflow representation capable of capturing from free-wake models all of the relevant dynamics of the wake, including wake distortion. This method has successfully been used to extract a first order representation of the inflow for both single main rotor helicopters and coaxial rotorcraft. With state-space models of inflow defined for an advanced coaxial configuration, this paper also presents a comparison of the fully-coupled aircraft flight dynamics, and the design of an explicit modeling-following feedback controller, with both the free-wake identified model and a momentum theory based approach.

It is well known that the rate of intramolecular electron transfer in linked donor-acceptor molecules is not only dependent upon the distance and orientation between the donor (D) and acceptor (A), but is also dependent upon the electronic properties of the intervening spacer (S) molecules between the redox centers[1]. If the distance between D and A is small enough to allow for direct overlap between the frontier orbitals of the donor and acceptor, electron transfer may occur by means of a through-space mechanism. When the D and A centers are too far apart for direct orbital overlap to be important, electron transfer may occur via a superexchange or through bond interaction. Both contributions to the total electronic coupling matrix element for electron transfer between the donor and acceptor depend on the distance and the orientation of the various molecular components. Thus, it is important to hold both the distance and geometry of the donor and acceptor fixed as the properties of the covalent spacer between them are varied. Achieving this degree of structural control in a D-S-A molecule is often a difficult task.

In the present study, we performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) interface system in order to investigate heat transfer characteristics over the SAM/alkane solvent interface. 1-dodecanethiol (C12H25S-) SAM chemisorbed on a gold substrate contacting with n-dodecane (C12H26) solvent was examined to compare the microscopic heat transfer mechanisms inside both the SAM and solvent phases. The direct nonequilibrium MD (NEMD) simulation, in which a constant heat flux across the SAM interface was imposed, was performed. The heat flux through the system was decomposed into the microscopic “building blocks”, i.e., the contribution of energy transfer associated with molecular motion and that of energy exchange by intermolecular (nonbonded) and intramolecular (covalent bond) interactions. Interestingly, inside the SAM layer, almost all of the energy is transferred by the intramolecular interaction along the alkyl chain. On the other hand, in the alkane liquid phase, the intramolecular and intermolecular interactions have comparable contributions to the total heat flux in spite of the same molecular structure and alkyl chain length as the SAM molecules. This difference in the heat transfer mechanism implies the relation between the ordering structure of alkyl chains and thermal conductivity in organic materials.

As digital technologies like smartphones, social media, and mobile GPS become increasingly integrated into daily life, they are transforming our interactions with public spaces, but the interactions between the two have yet to be sufficiently explored. This paper examines technology’s impact on public spaces through a meta-analysis of existing literature on design, technology, and culture, and offers new hypotheses of how technological advancement will affect these spaces in the future. It finds that technology is redefining public space by affecting mobility, reducing urban legibility, and altering our connection with nature. Furthermore, trends like the growth of scalable design and the proliferation of QR codes may contribute to trends like urban homogenization, inaccessibility, and technology dependence. Together, these findings highlight the need for urban planners and policymakers to carefully consider the relationship between technology and public spaces to preserve their critical social role in today’s digital age.

The Local Development Councils (LDCs) play a significant role in participatory governance for local policy development, as local government units (LGUs) are required to include members from civil society organizations (CSOs) in LDCs. While the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) monitors LDC functionality in accordance with the Local Government Code’s operational guidelines through the Seal of Good Local Governance, the effectiveness of LDCs—particularly the quality and substance of CSO participation—has not been reviewed. To address this, the DILG developed the Participatory Governance Metrics-LDC (PGM-LDC) tool to assess various dimensions and variables of participatory governance (PG). This research provides a comprehensive assessment of the baseline participation status in LDCs using the PGM-LDC tool. Through a rigorous mixed-methods approach, the analysis explores LDC participation from the perspectives of LGUs and CSOs across different LGU types and LDC functionality ratings (high/low) nationwide. The baseline analysis consists of three parts. First, it establishes the context of PG in LDCs by examining various LDC mechanisms, practices, and adherence to national participation policies (e.g., perceptions of LDC composition and frequency of participation, status and level of participation in LDC functions and committees, mandated representation of women and indigenous peoples, etc.). Second, it analyzes the PGM-LDC variable statements corresponding to the three PG dimensions (space, engagement, results), including qualitative explanations and correlations of perceptions with LGU type, LDC functionality, and respondent group. Third, additional analytical explorations are included to test for inter-variable interactions (among the PGM statements and dimensions) according to the PG logics of the PGM-LDC tool design. Recommendations are provided in each section to enhance existing and planned policies and capacity development initiatives of the DILG to improve participation in LDCs. Operational recommendations for the future deployment of the PGM-LDC survey are also included. Finally, the report concludes with an assessment of the baseline status of participation in LGUs. The analysis reveals that, when viewed through the lens of mandated mechanisms and practices, the state of participation in LDCs reflects active involvement from CSOs but is limited to ‘invited’ parameters. Furthermore, when analyzed through the PGM-LDC framework, agreeable ratings across the variable statements characterize the state of participation in LDCs, although more substantive PG principles, such as CSO influence and autonomy, rank lower among the 14 variables. In addition to specific recommendations in each variable-indicator discussion, the study also advocates for the elevation of national policy prescriptions and support for quality participation, as well as a deeper understanding of factors contributing to CSO satisfaction, particularly those influencing CSOs’ perceptions of their participation and referencing potential (rather than actual) benefits of participation for their satisfaction.

Heat flux varies spatially over exposed walls based on the complex thermal interactions within the fire environment, and is the driving factor for thermally induced fire damage. A fire model predicts the temperature and heat transfer through walls based on field predictions, such as radiative and convective heat flux, and is also subject to the boundary condition represen-tation, which is at the discretion of model practitioners. At the time of writing, Fire Dynamics Simulator can represent in-depth heat transfer through walls, and transverse heat transfer is in a preliminary development stage. Critically, limited suitable data exists for validation of heat trans-fer through walls exposed to fires. Mass loss and discoloration fire effects are directly related to the heat transfer and thermal decomposition of walls, therefore it is crucial that the representation of transverse heat transfer in walls in fire models be validated to ensure that fire investigators can produce accurate simulations and reconstructions with these tools. The purpose of this study was to conduct a series of experiments to obtain data that addresses three validation spaces: 1) thermal exposure to walls from fires; 2) heat transfer within walls exposed to fires; and 3) fire damage patterns arising on walls exposed to fires. Fire Safety Research Institute, part of UL Research Institutes, in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Fire Research Laboratory, led this novel research endeavor. Experiments were performed on three types of walls to address the needs in this validation space: 1. Steel sheet (304 stainless steel, 0.793 mm thick, coated in high-emissivity high-temperature paint on both sides). This wall type was used to support the heat flux validation objective. By combining measurements of gas temperatures near the wall with surface temperatures obtained using infrared thermography, estimates of the incident heat flux to the wall were produced. 2. Calcium silicate board (BNZ Marinite I, 12.7 mm thick). This wall type was used to support the heat transfer validation objective. Since calcium silicate board is a noncombustible material with well-characterized thermophysical properties at elevated temperatures, measurements of surface temperature may be used to validate transverse heat transfer in a fire model without the need to account for a decomposition mechanism. 3. Gypsum wallboard (USG Sheetrock Ultralight, 12.7 mm thick, coated in white latex paint on the exposed side). This wall type was used to support the fire damage patterns validation objective. Two types of fire effects were considered: 1) discoloration and charring of the painted paper facing of the gypsum wallboard; and 2) mass loss of the gypsum wallboard (which is related to the calcination of the core material). In addition to temperature and heat flux measurements, high resolution photographs of fire patterns were recorded, and mass loss over the entirety of the wall was measured by cutting the wall into smaller samples and measuring the mass of each individual sample. A total of 63 experiments were conducted, encompassing seven fire sources and three wall types (each combination conducted in triplicate). Fire sources included a natural gas burner, gasoline and heptane pools, wood cribs, and upholstered furniture. A methodology was developed for obtaining estimates of field heat flux to a wall using a large plate heat flux sensor. This included a numerical optimization scheme to account for convection heat transfer. These data characterized the incident heat flux received by calcium silicate board and gypsum wallboard in subsequent experiments. Fire damage patterns on the gypsum wallboard, attributed to discoloration and mass loss fire effects, were measured. It was found that heat flux and mass loss fields were similar for a given fire type, but the relationship between these measurements was not consistent across all fire types. Therefore, it was concluded that cumulative heat flux does not adequately describe the mass loss fire effect. Fire damage patterns attributed to the discoloration fire effect were defined as the line of demarcation separating charred and uncharred regions of the wall. It was found that the average values of cumulative heat flux and mass loss ratio coinciding with the fire damage patterns were 10.41 ± 1.51 MJ m−2 and 14.86 ± 2.08 %, respectively. These damage metrics may have utility in predicting char delineation damage patterns in gypsum wallboard using a fire model, with the mass loss ratio metric being overall the best fit over all exposures considered. The article investigates functional techniques of extralinguistic expression in multimedia texts; the effectiveness of figurative expressions as a reaction to modern events in Ukraine and their influence on the formation of public opinion is shown. Publications of journalists, broadcasts of media resonators, experts, public figures, politicians, readers are analyzed. The language of the media plays a key role in shaping the worldview of the young political elite in the first place. The essence of each statement is a focused thought that reacts to events in the world or in one’s own country. The most popular platform for mass information and social interaction is, first of all, network journalism, which is characterized by mobility and unlimited time and space. Authors have complete freedom to express their views in direct language, including their own word formation. Phonetic, lexical, phraseological and stylistic means of speech create expression of the text. A figurative word, a good aphorism or proverb, a paraphrased expression, etc. enhance the effectiveness of a multimedia text. This is especially important for headlines that simultaneously inform and influence the views of millions of readers. Given the wide range of issues raised by the Internet as a medium, research in this area is interdisciplinary. The science of information, combining language and social communication, is at the forefront of global interactions. The Internet is an effective source of knowledge and a forum for free thought. Nonlinear texts (hypertexts) – «branching texts or texts that perform actions on request», multimedia texts change the principles of information collection, storage and dissemination, involving billions of readers in the discussion of global issues. Mastering the word is not an easy task if the author of the publication is not well-read, is not deep in the topic, does not know the psychology of the audience for which he writes. Therefore, the study of media broadcasting is an important component of the professional training of future journalists. The functions of the language of the media require the authors to make the right statements and convincing arguments in the text. Journalism education is not only knowledge of imperative and dispositive norms, but also apodictic ones. In practice, this means that there are rules in media creativity that are based on logical necessity. Apodicticity is the first sign of impressive language on the platform of print or electronic media. Social expression is a combination of creative abilities and linguistic competencies that a journalist realizes in his activity. Creative self-expression is realized in a set of many important factors in the media: the choice of topic, convincing arguments, logical presentation of ideas and deep philological education. Linguistic art, in contrast to painting, music, sculpture, accumulates all visual, auditory, tactile and empathic sensations in a universal sign – the word. The choice of the word for the reproduction of sensory and semantic meanings, its competent use in the appropriate context distinguishes the journalist-intellectual from other participants in forums, round tables, analytical or entertainment programs. Expressive speech in the media is a product of the intellect (ability to think) of all those who write on socio-political or economic topics. In the same plane with him – intelligence (awareness, prudence), the first sign of which (according to Ivan Ogienko) is a good knowledge of the language. Intellectual language is an important means of organizing a journalistic text. It, on the one hand, logically conveys the author’s thoughts, and on the other – encourages the reader to reflect and comprehend what is read. The richness of language is accumulated through continuous self-education and interesting communication. Studies of social expression as an important factor influencing the formation of public consciousness should open up new facets of rational and emotional media broadcasting; to trace physical and psychological reactions to communicative mimicry in the media. Speech mimicry as one of the methods of disguise is increasingly becoming a dangerous factor in manipulating the media. Mimicry is an unprincipled adaptation to the surrounding social conditions; one of the most famous examples of an animal characterized by mimicry (change of protective color and shape) is a chameleon. In a figurative sense, chameleons are called adaptive journalists. Observations show that mimicry in politics is to some extent a kind of game that, like every game, is always conditional and artificial.
