Integrative augmentation of standardized management systems, though proposed more than ten years ago, remains underexplored. This paper presents three examples of such integrative augmentation in health care and engineering education services in Western Canada. The first example illustrates how ISO 10003 could be selectively and comprehensively used in an ISO 10002-based process for handling concerns in a provincial health care system. The second shows a case of ISO 10004 augmenting an ISO 10001-based “Customer Satisfaction Promise” in an inpatients care unit of a hospital. Finally, different instances of integrative augmentation involving ISO 10001, 10002 and 10004 in engineering education are reported in the third example. This paper is likely the first to present examples of ISO 10000 systems being augmented by other ISO 10000 subsystems, and aims to promote the integrative use of augmenting management system standards by showcasing various approaches to the related augmentation in two different service industries, namely health and education.

Abstract Application and integration of the systems based on ISO 10001: 2007 and other new augmentative standards are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the quality management standards forming the front end of the ISO 10000 series, namely ISO 10001, ISO 10002 and ISO 10003, as well as ISO 19011, the standard which stems from the original augmentative ISO 10000 guideline, specifically ISO 10011 on quality auditing. The ability of these and other similar standards to augment the performance of quality management systems in organizations and to foster integration of the respective augmentative systems themselves or within the overarching management systems is addressed and further illustrated through an example of their use in engineering education.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore ISO 10001:2007 in planning, designing and developing a customer satisfaction promise (CSP) intended for inpatients care. Design/methodology/approach – Through meetings and interviews with research participants, who included a program manager, unit managers and registered nurses, information about potential promises and their implementation was obtained and analyzed. A number of promises were drafted and one was finally selected to be developed as a CSP. Findings – Applying the standard required adaptation and novel interpretation. Additionally, ISO 10002:2004 (Clause 7) was used to design the feedback handling activities. A promise initially chosen for development turned out to be difficult to implement, experience that helped in selecting and developing the final promise. Research participants found the ISO 10001-based method useful and comprehensible. Practical implications – This paper presents a specific health care example of how to adapt a standard’s guideline in establishing customer promises. The authors show how a promise can be used in alleviating an existing issue (i.e. communication between carers and patients). The learning can be beneficial in various health care settings. Originality/value – To the knowledge, this paper shows the first example of applying ISO 10001:2007 in a health care case. A few activities suggested by the standard are further detailed, and a new activity is introduced. The integrated use of ISO 10001:2007 and 10002:2004 is presented and how one can be “augmented” by the other is demonstrated.

This study aims to determine and provide information about the corellation of COBIT 5, ITILV3 ,and ISO 27001 for customer satisfaction. This study uses a causal associative method with a quantitative approach. The population of this research is all customers of company Quota Broadband Internet. The sampling technique in this research is probability sampling technique through simple random sampling. The research sample was 135 customers. The results showed that there was an corellation of COBIT 5 (6.Customer-oriented service culture ), ITIL V3 (Service Operation 4.2 Incident management), and ISO 27001 (A.16 Information security incident management) for 10002 (3.4 customer satisfaction). The biggest influence is COBIT 5 on ISO 27001 with a T statistic of 6,960 and a P value of 0,000.

A thermophilic strain, designated YIM 10002T, was isolated from a soil sample of Big Empty Volcano in Tengchong county, Yunnan province, south-west China, and a polyphasic approach was used to investigate its taxonomic position. Strain YIM 10002T formed endospores on both aerial and substrate mycelia. Whole-cell hydrolysates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid, ribose, xylose and glucose. The major fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and anteiso-C15 : 0. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylinositol mannosides, together with some unknown phospholipids. The G+C content of its genomic DNA was 48.6 mol%. All of these chemotaxonomic data together with morphological characters consistently assigned strain YIM 10002T to the genus Laceyella. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain YIM 10002T was most closely related to Laceyella sacchari KCTC 9790T and Laceyella putida KCTC 3666T (99.9 and 98.0 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, respectively). However, strain YIM 10002T showed relatively low DNA–DNA relatedness (34.0 and 39.0 %, respectively) with the above strains. Therefore, strain YIM 10002T represents a novel species of the genus Laceyella, for which the name Laceyella tengchongensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is YIM 10002T (=DSM 45262T =CCTCC AA 208050T).

Statistical distribution and statistical upper limit (the value which 93.5 % of the batch of new equipment are expected to lie) of A-weighted sound power level for one office printer were experimentally estimated from 10 new samples picked up from market. The printer is capable of A4-size printing with electrophotographic engine which corresponds Annex C.16 Page printers in ECMA74 17th (2019). A-weighted sound power level for continuous printing mode was determined in accordance with noise test code for ITTE (Information Technology and Telecommunications Equipment such as printers and personal computers), ISO 7779:2018 and ECMA-74 Annex C. Sample standard distribution of production of overall A-weighted sound power level (determined from 100-10000 Hz one-third-octave band) is 0.25 dB, whereas individual one-third-octave band has larger distribution. The value obtained is better than reference distribution 1.32 dB set in ISO 9296:2017 which states estimation of statistical upper limit value of the batch of equipment for ITTE.

It is often necessary to prescribe size and form tolerances when specific workpiece accuracy is demanded. On the basis of published data and investigations carried out by the author a correlation has been developed between deviations in form and International organization for Standardization (ISO) tolerances. The range of application is for nominal sizes up to 10000 mm and for tolerance grades 4-16. This correlation can help constructors and workshop workers to choose the size of form tolerances when a certain workpiece accuracy is damanded. The proposed correlation is verified by measurements of the fitting of workpieces for industrial production and the evaluation of measuring data.

Taking M12.5 × 1.25 × 65-10.9 bolt as an example, this paper studies the extreme distribution of the minimum value of bolt tensile strength in order to evaluate the reliability and stability of bolt product quality and to verify the production process. Through data collection, parameter estimation, distribution test and extreme prediction, it is concluded that: 1) the distribution of the minimum value of bolt tensile strength conforms to Gumbel extreme distribution; 2) when the return period is 10000, the predicted minimum tensile strength is 1071.7 MPa ± 3.2 MPa, k = 2. It is higher than the minimum value of 1040 MPa required by ISO 898-1 standard.

Interobserver Variations in Diagnosing Asbestosis According to the ILO ClassificationInhalation of asbestos fibres leads to asbestosis of the pleura and the lung, with possible progression to lung cancer and malignant pleural or peritoneal mesothelioma. Asbestosis remains difficult to diagnose, especially in its early stages. The most important role in its diagnosis is that of chest radiographs. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to address interobserver variations in interpreting chest radiographs in asbestos workers, which remain to be an issue, despite improvements in the International Labour Office (ILO) classification system. In our ten-year study, we investigated 318 workers occupationally exposed to asbestos, and in 210 workers with diagnosed asbestos-related changes we compared interpretations of chest radiographs according to ILO by two independent radiologists. The apparent degree of interobserver variation in classifying lung fibrosis was 26.66% for the diameter of changes and 42.2% for the profusion of the changes. In cases with diffuse pleural thickening, the interobserver variation using ILO procedures was 34.93%. This investigation raises the issue of standardisation and objectivity of interpretation of asbestosis according to the ILO classification system. This study has revealed a significant disagreement in the estimated degree of pleural and parenchymal asbestos pulmonary disease. This is why we believe high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) should also be used as a part of international classification.

La demanda de servicios hospitalarios provoca la necesidad de implementar unidades móviles incorporadas a la red de salud pública, que permitan ofrecer los servicios sanitarios de forma óptima y bajo criterios de calidad que garanticen la satisfacción de las partes interesadas. En este sentido, el Hospital Móvil No.1 inició la atención al público el 20 de junio de 2011 en la ciudad de Guayaquil, Ecuador y desde su fundación ha realizado más de 10000 atenciones. El objetivo de la investigación fue diagnosticar la situación actual de los 47 colaboradores o trabajadores de la organización antes mencionada respecto a las condiciones y características administrativas de sus funciones para inferir acerca de la necesidad de implementar un plan de capacitación virtual que permita optimizar la gestión de procesos basado en los requisitos de la norma ISO 9001:2008. Se determinó que el 45% de los encuestados alegó que el personal sí tiene capacitación para realizar mejor sus funciones; mientras que un 55% sostiene que no se ejecuta una debida formación. Se pudo corroborar que existe la necesidad de implantar un programa de capacitación mediante una plataforma virtual, para que contribuya a la mejora de los procesos en la atención a los pacientes que acuden al Hospital Móvil Nº 1. This type of culture could be started through the definition of the main principles of General Management that govern the management of projects in an organizational context. This work is aimed to analyze the ISO norm 10006 “Quality Management Systems – Guidelines for quality management in projects” not by the quality point of view in a project management context but by the contribute to the growth of organizations through the definition implicit or explicit of principles on which it must base an organization that works for projects. The results of this study revealed that implicit and explicit principles of general management help to involve all parts of an organization and improve the management of organizational projects successfully. It will be also taken in comparison the most important project management standards such as ISO21500, PMBOK, IPMA, PRINCE2.

Prevalence of Candida Species in Fresh Fruit JuicesFruit juices are popular soft drinks with an important role in human nutrition. Fruit juices are often infested by yeast species that can survive different storage conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the degree of yeast contamination of freshly squeezed juices in three large supermarkets in Zagreb, Croatia. The analysis included 84 juice samples obtained from freshly squeezed orange, lemon, grapefruit, and apples. Their acidity varied between pH 2.1 and pH 4.9. Juice samples were plated directly on Sabouraud 4 % glucose Agar (Merck, 1.05438) and processed according to standardised methods (HRN ISO 7954:2002). Yeasts were isolated in all 84 samples and ranged between 0.005×103 and 23×103 colony forming units per mL (CFU mL-1). The most common yeasts identified using the API 20C AUX yeast kit included Candida guillermondii, C. krusei, C. famata, C. spherica, C. colliculosa, C. albicans, Trichosporon mucoides, Kloeckera spp. and yeast-like fungus Cryptococcus neoformans. C. guillermondii prevailed in 55.95 % of all samples.

Printable conductors with high conductivity would be critical for low-cost printed electronics. In view of printability, conductivity, and electrical stability, metal such as gold or silver derived from solution-deposited precursor compositions would be an ideal candidate. Xerox has been exploring the use of silver nanoparticles as conductor precursor composition for printed electronics. This paper reviews our research in the development of alkylamine-stabilized silver nanoparticles that can be sintered at low temperature (∼ 120 °C) for high conductivity (>10000 S/cm). Silver nanoparticle ink formulations based on these silver nanoparticles exhibit surface-energy independent printability which enables the fabrication of high-performance top-contact transistor devices, and self-assembly characteristic when printed on hydrophilic substrates which allows for large-area, defect-free source drain arrays to be printed with a narrow and uniform channel length.

Se estudió el estado de situación de la investigación en la Argentina y, específicamente, en la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional. Se relevó la normativa que hace referencia a la investigación desde la creación de la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional hasta nuestros días. Se analizaron los comentarios formulados por la Comisión Nacional de Evaluación y Acreditación Universitaria respecto al estado de la investigación y el desarrollo en la acreditación de las carreras. A partir de una encuesta a investigadores de las Facultades Regionales Avellaneda y Buenos Aires surgió la necesidad de mejorar los formularios para la presentación de proyectos. Se analizaron distintas normativas internacionales y se concluyó que la más adecuada, para tomar como referencia, era la norma ISO 10006:2003 (Sistemas de Gestión de Calidad. Directrices para la Gestión de Calidad en Proyectos). Se estudió esta norma y se explicó la forma de interpretación de cada capítulo en el ámbito de la Universidad Tecnológica Nacional. Se realizó una adecuación de los formularios actuales y se obtuvo un modelo preliminar que fue validado en cuatro grupos de investigación. El resultado de la validación arrojó posibilidades de mejoras que se aplicaron al modelo definitivo para la presentación de proyectos.

Environmental Noise and Annoyance in Adult Population of Skopje: A Cross-Sectional StudyThe aim of this study was to identify noise exposure indicators during day and night in the city of Skopje and to see if there is an association between these noise exposure indicators and annoyance. We have performed noise measurements and interviewed 510 adult subjects, using a questionnaire, prepared according to the ISO/TS-15666 standard. Average noise level over the day (Lday) was (62±6.45) dB(A) and over night (Lnight) (56±6.52) dB(A). Thirteen percent of subjects reported a high level, and 33.5% moderate level of annoyance. The most annoying noise sources were construction activities (34% of the subjects), road traffic (24%), and leisure/entertainment activities (18%). We found a significant association between exposure to Lday in the range 61 dB(A) to 65 dB(A) and annoyance in the exposed population (chi-square = 86.14; p<0.001; Spearman's R=0.45; p<0.05). During the night time annoyance was reported with exposure to Lnight above 46 dB(A). Levels of annoyance in Macedonia are similar to levels in developed European countries. Differences are in the source of noise. This study has shown that environmental noise is a significant hazard in urban environments, and assessment of annoyance may prove a useful tool for town planners and public health policy makers.

Abstract Workers in denim sandblasting are at a high risk of developing silicosis, an occupational lung disease caused by inhaling crystalline silica dust. The development and progress of silicosis is associated with the activation of the immune system and oxidative stress. In the former, interferon-gamma induces both neopterin release and the enzyme indoleamine [2, 3]-dioxygenase (IDO) in various cells. The determination of the kynurenine-to-tryptophan ratio and neopterin concentration has proven to be an efficient method to monitor the activation status of IDO and cellular immunity. The present study aimed to investigate whether occupational silica exposure leads to any alterations in neopterin levels, tryptophan degradation, and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), agents in the antioxidant defense system. Fifty-five male denim sandblasting workers and twenty-two healthy men as controls were included. Mean neopterin and kynurenine levels, kynurenine-to-tryptophan ratio, and SOD activity were higher in subjects with silicosis compared to non-exposed controls (all, p<0.05). Neopterin levels and kynurenine-totryptophan ratios were positively correlated (p<0.05); however, no correlation was observed between length of employment and the measured parameters. Some of the measured parameters were significantly affected by the severity of the pathology. Our results suggest that silica exposure activates the cellular immune response. The increased neopterin levels and tryptophan degradation confirm the possibility of their use as an indicator of cellular immune response.

El objetivo del presente estudio es aplicar una metodología rigurosa para estimar la incertidumbre de las mediciones utilizando el método adaptativo de la simulación de Monte Carlo (MCM). Se tomó como ejemplo la estimación de la incertidumbre en la medición del área de un triángulo. El valor del área (y) y su incertidumbre asociada (uy) se calcularon en base a un algoritmo que se programó en lenguaje Maple 12, generando un total de 10000 valores del mensurando. Para calcular el intervalo de confianza (o intervalo de cobertura), se exportaron estos valores a la hoja de cálculo MS Excel, se obtuvieron los porcentajes acumulados de la función de distribución de probabilidad (CPDF) y se evaluaron los valores extremos del intervalo de cobertura (yinf, ysup) a una probabilidad del 95%. A partir de los resultados se trazó el histograma y se demostró que siguen una distribución normal. Para verificar la estabilidad estadística se aplicó el procedimiento adaptativo del suplemento 1 de la guía GUM ISO 2008. Los cálculos se repitieron 3 veces, hasta que se obtuvo la precisión adecuada. Los valores de los parámetros finales del mensurando en cm2 fueron: y=50.72, uy=0.13, yinf=50.48, ysup=50.96. También se aplicó el método clásico GUM 1995 o ley de propagación de la incertidumbre, encontrándose los siguientes valores: y=50.72, uy=0.25, yinf=50.21, ysup=51.22. An obligate anaerobic, mesophilic, motile and endospore-forming bacterium, designated 1DT, was isolated from a subsurface soil sample. The young culture of strain 1DT was Gram-positive and formed oval spores that were central in position. Based on the biochemical, chemotaxonomic and physiological data, strain 1DT appears to be a member of the genus Clostridium. Strain 1DT was found to be capable of degrading p-nitrophenol (pNP) at a concentration of 0.5 mM under anaerobic conditions as revealed by HPLC analysis. The major fatty acids were C16 : 0 (28.02 %), iso-C17 : 1 I/anteiso B (23.05 %) and C14 : 0 (10.02 %). The major polar lipid content was diphosphatidylglycerol. Strain 1DT showed highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Clostridium aciditolerans JW/YJL-B3T (98.2 %) and similarity was less for Clostridium scatologenes ATCC 25775T (95.1 %), Clostridium drakei SL1T (95.0 %) and Clostridium carboxidivorans P7T (95.0 %). Phylogenetic analysis showed that it formed a coherent cluster with the species belonging to cluster I of the genus Clostridium. The DNA G+C content was 35.5 mol%. DNA–DNA hybridization analysis indicated a mean value of 36.4 % between strain 1DT and its closest relative C. aciditolerans. Several phenotypic differences from the closely related species were also revealed. On the basis of the polyphasic characteristics, strain 1DT represents a novel species of the genus Clostridium, for which the name Clostridium nitrophenolicum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 1DT (=MTCC 7832T=JCM 14030T).

O desempenho de uma válvula reguladora de pressão, fabricada pela Fabrimar, Modelo Exact-20-Ref. RP-3-20-3/4"FF, utilizada em pivô central, foi avaliado em laboratório, conforme as normas ISO (1993). Este trabalho foi desenvolvido no Laboratório de Irrigação do Departamento de Engenharia Rural, ESALQ/USP, utilizando-se reguladores de pressão novos e com diferentes tempos de emprego no campo. As curvas de desempenho das válvulas novas satisfizeram as condições exigidas pela norma, caracterizando o regulador como do tipo A, para as velocidades de referência de 0,5 m s-1 (vazão de 0,57 m³ h-1) até 4,0 m s-1 (vazão de 4,50 m³ h-1) e várias pressões de entrada, sendo também elaborado um modelo estatístico para a pressão de saída do regulador novo, com uma vazão e uma pressão de entrada. Foram coletadas, de diversos sistemas tipo pivô central e de diferentes vãos, válvulas reguladoras de pressão do mesmo modelo, que possuíam tempos de uso de 2000, 2500, 6000, 8500, 9000 e 10000 h e, também, com diferentes qualidades de água utilizadas. Os ensaios seguiram os mesmos padrões dos novos, realizando-se uma análise estatística dos dados. Apesar dos desgastes provocados pela água de má qualidade e dos vazamentos apresentados, o desempenho hidráulico das válvulas com tempo de uso até 6000 h, não diferiu do desempenho das novas, para pressões de entrada até 826,3 kPa e velocidades de referência até 2,5 m s-1. O desempenho dos reguladores de pressão com tempos de uso iguais ou superiores a 8500 h, não se manteve semelhante ao do regulador novo, especialmente para pressões de entrada superiores a 481,7 kPa.

<p><em>The value of H<sub>p</sub>(10) can be measured directly using H<sub>p</sub>(10) secondary standard chamber that developed by Physikalisch Technische Bundensalt (PTB), Germany. H<sub>p</sub>(10) secondary standard chamber type T 34035/0046 is connected with electrometer PTW Unidos T 10001 / Ns.11814. In this paper, the exposure was carried out by X-ray sources and <sup>137</sup>Cs for dose and radiation energy variations.The variations energy of X-ray were carried out using ISO 4037-1 quality narrow (N) spectrum within N-40 to N-300, while the radiation dose variations were carried out in the dose within range 0.1 mSv to 20 mSv. The use of the S-<sup>137</sup>Cs calibration factor for the H<sub>p</sub>(10) secondary standard chamber with an X-ray irradiation source were carried out and obtained a fairly good response result not in all energy ranges. The result obtained a relatively constant response to energy of 65 keV to 250 keV (energy quality N-80 to N-250), this corresponds to the deviation obtained i.e ≤ 7% from the normalization reference source of <sup>137</sup>Cs at 662 keV energy. Whereas for deviations below 3%, a relatively constant response has founded in the energy range of 100 keV to 250 keV (energy quality N-120 to N-250). The result obtained linier measurement on variations in dose according to changes in dose variation. The H<sub>p</sub>(10) secondary standard chamber is capable for measuring variations of radiation dose, i.e from variations of 0.1 mSv to 20 mSv.</em></p>

Legionella sp. contamination in hot water systems in hotels in the ŚwiętokrzyskieVoivodshipIntroduction: In the European Union countries there were detected 6933 cases of legionellosis Legionnaires’ disease in 2014. The disease is caused by Legionella sp. bacteria, which are responsible for Legionella sp. pneumonia infection and common in both natural and artificial water environments. If there is proper temperature and nutrients, the bacteria multiply rapidly in artificial environments hot water systems, central air conditioning systems, and medical devices, posing a risk to human health.Aims: This study was conducted to quantify the frequency of contamination with Legionella sp. of hot water systems in some hotels in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship.Materials and methods: 228 buildings 103 hotels and 125 other types of lodging were investigated in the years 2009–2015, 1414 samples were collected which were later analyzed by membrane filtration technique in the laboratories of the State Sanitary Inspection in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, conforming to the methods of PN-ISO 11731-2:2008.Results: Legionella sp. was detected in 30.3% of the hot water systems investigated. The problem of bacteria colonization was more frequent in the hotel buildings 41.2% that in other types of lodging 20.8%. In 34 hotels and 20 other buildings the level of contamination was medium Legionella sp. 100–1000 CFU/100 ml sample, and in 9 hotel and 6 other buildings the contamination was high Legionella sp. 1000–10000 CFU/100 ml sample. In general out of 1414 collected samples, medium and high contamination with Legionella sp. was detected in 272 samples 19.2%.Conclusions: The results obtained in the study confirm an overall presence of Legionella sp. in hot water systems of hotels and other lodgings in the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. Having analyzed the data from the years 2009–2015, there may be observed a slight decline in the frequency of contamination in the recent years. Nonetheless, it is alarming that despite a periodic control system at some of the locations, the level of contamination is still signifi cant.

El primer paciente con Infección por VIH en Chile fue atendido en el Hospital Clínico UC en 1984. Desde esa época, más de 72000 personas han sido diagnosticadas y cerca de 10000 han fallecido a consecuencia de esta enfermedad. De acuerdo al reporte 2019 de ONUSIDA, a diciembre del 2018 vivían en Chile 71000 personas portadoras del virus, de las cuales 61000 estarían ya diagnosticadas. Según el mismo informe, en el 2018 se reportaron 5000 nuevas infecciones, cifra que ha ido en aumento desde el 2010, año en que se confirmaron 3700 casos. Por otra parte, de acuerdo a información entregada por el Instituto de Salud Pública (ISP) de Chile, el 2018 se confirmaron 6948 nuevas infecciones, mientras que en el año 2010 se diagnosticaron 3218 pacientes. Esta diferencia entre los datos nacionales y de ONUSIDA se debería a que este último organismo efectúa una estimación basada en los casos reportados oficialmente por el Ministerio de Salud (MINSAL) y la predicción que efectúa el software Spectrum y no considera necesariamente todas las confirmaciones de laboratorio que efectúa el ISP. En cualquiera de los dos escenarios, no cabe duda que el número de nuevos diagnósticos en Chile ha crecido de manera exponencial en los últimos años, en contraste con el descenso que se observa en la mayoría de los países. Ello nos sitúa entre las diez naciones con mayor aumento en la infección por VIH/SIDA a nivel global.

El objetivo fue diseñar propuestas de mejora para un servicio de mantenimiento y reparación de vehículos que posee la concesión de una marca internacional de automóviles. La metodología consideró principalmente los aportes del modelo chileno de gestión de excelencia, una norma para el tratamiento de los reclamos, una metodología de diagnóstico de gestión, las dimensiones del modelo Servperf y la técnica de análisis de factores. Los principales resultados permitieron conocer el nivel de calidad del servicio, identificación de una dimensión de calidad subyacente, catorce prácticas de gestión y el diseño de un mecanismo de control y seguimiento fundamentado en la teoría del cuadro de mando integral. Las principales conclusiones indican que integrando los aportes de la literatura de gestión de calidad se pueden diseñar propuestas de mejora en los ámbitos estratégico, personal, análisis de datos, métodos y tecnología.

AbstractWe model a cold-wall atmospheric pressure impinging jet reactor to study the CVD and gas-phase nucleation of TiO2 from a titanium tetra-iso-propoxide (TTIP)/oxygen dilute source gas mixture in nitrogen. The mathematical model uses the computational code FIDAP and complements our recent asymptotic theory for high activation energy gas-phase reactions in thin chemically reacting sublayers. The numerical predictions highlight deviations from ideality in various regions inside the experimental reactor. Model predictions of deposition rates and the onset of gas-phase nucleation compare favorably with experiments. Although variable property effects on deposition rates are not significant (∼11% at 1000K), the reduction of rates due to Soret transport is substantial (∼75% at 1000K).

DETECCIÓN Y ENUMERACIÓN DE BACTERIÓFAGOS F+ ESPECÍFICOS COMO INDICADORES DE ENTEROVIRUS EN EL CHORO (Aulacomya ater) Milagros Miranda C. y César Pizardi D DOI: https://doi.org/10.33017/RevECIPeru2004.0014/ RESUMEN El objetivo del presente trabajo fue aplicar el método de la norma ISO 10705 – 1: 1995 para determinar si el choro (Aulacomya ater) es un molusco que está libre de patógenos virales al momento de su venta al público en los terminales pesqueros y algunos mercados de abasto en Lima. Las muestras utilizadas fueron las vísceras y el manto del choro. La metodología empleada fue la recomendada por la norma ISO 10705-1:1995, la cual consistió primero en la preparación de los cultivos madre y de trabajo de la cepa hospedadora Salmonella typhimurium WG49, detección y enumeración de bacteriófagos ARN F+ específicos a la cepa. El bacteriófago fue detectado únicamente en las muestras provenientes del terminal pesquero de Ventanilla, con una mayor concentración en las vísceras (6000 a 10000 uff) que en el manto (800 a 1400 uff). As samples we used the mussel viscera and mantle. The methodology employed was the one recommended by the ISO 10705-1:1995 standard, which consisted in the preparation of the master culture and working culture of the strain hosting the Salmonella typhimurium WG49, the detection and enumeration of the strain F+ specific RNA bacteriophages The bacteriophage was detected only in the samples obtained at the Ventanilla fishing port, showing that the concentration in the viscera (6000 to 10000 pfu) was higher than in the mantle (800 to 1400 pfu). The main purpose of this research work is to evaluate the predicted values for the corrected Brake power (BP) and corrected specific fuel consumption (SFC) of single cylinder VCR diesel engine operated on diesel and jatropha biodiesel blend (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) derived from jatropha curcas oil. Current research work concentrates on the performance parameters of engine 4 stroke single cylinder CI engine, carried out using ISO 10000 approach in which the brake power and specific fuel consumption are corrected via correction factors “α‟ & “β‟ respectively. Also examine combined effect of brake power at various blends and loads in order to find out optimal performance of CI engine by conducting experiments as per IS 10000 method. The experimental work will be used to find out load and blend ratio for optimal brake power and lower specific fuel consumption by using Taguchi’s approach using Minitab software. A set of experiments have been performed as suggested by the software. Engine variable such as loads and blend ratio (Diesel + % JBD) are the most significant variables for brake power at specific fuel consumptions. After experiments, it is reported that the optimized parameters for corrected BP (2.95 KW) are at 100% blend and 10 kg of engine load, and optimized parameter for corrected SFC (0.26 kg/KWh) are at 0% blend and 10 kg engine.

Indoor air quality was analyzed in the period from 2016 to 2019, in the Universidad Iberoamericana Torreón, with the objective of determining if it complied with the reference norms: ISO 14644- 1-2015 and UNE 100012:2005; due to in Mexico there are no applicable norms for the monitoring or indication of the Maximum Permissible Limits to determine indoor air quality. Methodology applied was focused on: 1) Determining the PSTs (from 0.3 to 10 µm) using a FLUKE particle counter; 2) Microbiological analysis; 3) Identifying isolated strains and 4) Calculating origin and wind intensity using a METPAK II climatological data and a WRPLOT software. PST and microbiological concentrations were found to be above the standards used. PS0.3 showed a significant difference (p<0.05) in the Auditorium, which had the highest concentrations in 2019 of evening schedule. Some of the biological material were identified as: 1) pathogenic bacteria of the genera Salmonella, Klebisella and Escherichia, and 2) fungi of the genera Aspergillus, Trichophyton and Candida; whose exposure could produce different allergies, asthma, develop respiratory symptoms, chronic cough, laryngitis, sinusitis and urticaria.

AbstractIn situ burning (ISB) is discussed to be one of the most suitable response strategies to combat oil spills in extreme conditions. After burning, a highly viscous and sticky residue is left and may over time pose a risk of exposing aquatic biota to toxic oil compounds. Scientific information about the impact of burn residues on the environment is scarce. In this context, a comprehensive ISB field experiment with approx. 1000L IFO 180 was conducted in a fjord in Greenland. The present study investigated the toxicity of collected ISB residues to early life stages of zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model for potentially exposed pelagic organisms. The toxicity of ISB residues on zebrafish embryos was compared with the toxicity of the initial (unweathered) IFO 180 and chemically dispersed IFO 180. Morphological malformations, hatching success, swimming behavior, and biomarkers for exposure (CYP1A activity, AChE inhibition) were evaluated in order to cover the toxic response on different biological organization levels. Across all endpoints, ISB residues did not induce greater toxicity in zebrafish embryos compared with the initial oil. The application of a chemical dispersant increased the acute toxicity most likely due to a higher bioavailability of dissolved and particulate oil components. The results provide insight into the adverse effects of ISB residues on sensitive life stages of fish in comparison with chemical dispersant application.

Introduction: Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) plays a key role in postconditioning (IPo) mediated protection against myocardial ischemia reperfusion injury, but the mechanism by which IPo activates STAT3 is unknown. Adiponectin (APN), a protein with anti-ischemic properties, activates STAT3. We hypothesized that IPo activates mitochondrial STAT3 (MitoSTAT3) via APN signaling. Methods and Results: Wild type (WT) and APN knockout (KO) mice were either sham operated or subjected to 30 min of coronary artery occlusion followed by 2 hours of reperfusion with or without IPo (3 cycles of 10 seconds reperfusion and 10 seconds reocclusion; n=8/group). At the end of reperfusion, KO mice exhibited more severe myocardial injury evidenced as increased infarct size (% of area at risk) 49.2±2.0 vs WT 39.4±3.5, P <0.01; plasma troponin I (ng/ml): KO 72.8±7.6 vs WT 45.7±4.0, P <0.01; worse cardiac function (lower dP/dt max and end-systolic pressure-volume relation, P <0.05); more severely impaired mitochondrial function (reductions in complex IV and complex V protein expression) and more severe reduction of MitoSTAT3 phosphorylation (activation) at site Ser727, P <0.01. IPo significantly attenuated post-ischemic cardiac injury and dysfunction with a concomitant increase in phosphorylated MitoSTAT3 and attenuation of mitochondrial dysfunction in WT (all P <0.05) but not in KO mice. In cultured cardiac H9C2 cells, hypoxic postconditioning (HPo, 3 cycles of 5 min hypoxia and 5 min reoxygenation) significantly attenuated hypoxia/reoxygenation (HR, 3 hours hypoxia/3 hours reoxygenation) induced cell injury (increased apoptotic cell death as % of HR): HR 100.2±0.4 vs HPo 78.2±4.8, P <0.05) and reduced mitochondrial transmembrane potential (% total cells, HR 37.2±4.9 vs HPo 23.5±3.7, P <0.01). APN, adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1), or STAT3 gene knockdown but not AdipoR2 gene knockdown, respectively, abolished HPo cellular protection (all P <0.05 vs. HPo). APN supplementation (10μg/ml) restored HPo protection in cells with APN knockdown but not in cells with AdipoR1or STAT3 gene knockdown. Conclusion: Adiponectin and AdipoR1 signaling are required for IPo to activate myocardial mitochondrial STAT3 to confer cardioprotection.

AbstractThe purpose of subject was to explore the optimum protein requirement of juvenile grouper (Epinephelus coioides). In the test, 450 juveniles with an average weight (10.02 ± 0.22) g were randomly divided into six groups with triplicate, and were fed with 350, 400, 450, 500, 550 and 600 g/kg iso-lipid test diet twice 1 day for 8 weeks, respectively. The results showed that: (1) With the increase of protein level, the body weight gain rate and specific growth rate first increased and then reduced, while the feed coefficient rate first decreased and then increased, while the protein efficiency significantly decreased (P < 0.05). (2) With the increase of protein level, the condition factor, hepaticsomatic index and visceralsomatic index significantly reduced (P < 0.05). (3) With the increase of protein level, the crude protein content of whole fish and muscle gradually increased, while the crude lipid content gradually decreased. (4) High-protein diet (550–600 g/kg) significantly increased the plasma total protein content and decreased the triglyceride content of orange-spotted grouper (P < 0.05). (5) Compared with the 350 g/kg group, 500, 550, 600 g/kg groups significantly increased the activities of glutamic-pyruvic transaminase and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase in liver (P < 0.05). (6) With the increase of protein level, the protease activity of intestine first increased and then decreased, and reached the maximum at the protein level of 500 g/kg, while lipase and amylase decreased significantly (P < 0.05). (7) The activities of acid phosphatase, superoxide dismutase and lysozyme in liver increased first and then decreased with the increase of protein level, and reached the maximum in the 400 g/kg protein group. According to the analysis specific growth rate, the optimum protein level of juvenile orange-spotted grouper is 521.84 g/kg.

Background: Malaria is a major cause of fever in endemic countries, although the prevalence of malaria has been declining across Sub-Saharan Africa, the proportion of clinical presentation attributable to febrile illness due to malaria to febrile illnesses have remained high. It is therefore important to determine the proportion of fever cases attributable to malaria.
Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted among children aged 1-72 months presenting at a tertiary facility in Imo state Nigeria from 1st March, 2014 to 31st October, 2015.
Children between 1-72 months of age with documented fever at presentation or history of fever in the last 24 hours without signs of severe malaria and those without any history of anti-malarial drugs administration were considered eligible. Fever was regarded as axillary temperature of ≥37.5°C. For all subjects (febrile and afebrile), the presence of Plasmodium falciparum was assessed microscopically by a WHO Certified malaria microscopist. Malaria parasite density was grouped as 1-1000, 1001–10000, and >10,000 parasites/µl respectively according to World Health Organization guidelines for grouping malaria parasitamae while data was analysed using SPSS 20.1v.
Results: Overall malaria prevalence of both febrile and afebrile at point of assessment but with history of fever in the last 24 hours was 24.3%. Prevalence by microscopy was 26% among the 289 children who were febrile as at point of examination. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) between malaria prevalence in males as against females.
Age group 49-72 months had the highest prevalence (42.6%), while age groups 25-48 and 1-24 months recorded prevalence of 35.7% and 25%, respectively (P<0.05). About 22.5% of afebrile patients had positive Plasmodium parasitaemia. The Geo-mean (range) of parasitaemia was 1427(8-180,000) parasite/µl while mean body temperature ± SD was 37.0±0.9°C. About 8% of the children had high parasite density.
Conclusion: Plasmodium falciparum although linked with majority of fever is not the cause of fever in all instances. Healthcare providers should make more effort to correctly diagnose non-malaria febrile cases so as to optimize clinical outcomes for the patients and minimize possible over diagnosis and overtreatment of malaria.

In this issue of our journal, there are three articles reporting on tuberculosis, a disease which has historically been a big problem in our country – much longer than the current COVID-19 pandemic.It cannot be denied that COVID-19 is a big problem right now and should indeed be a priority. As of October 24, 2020,the DOH reports that there have been 367,819 cases of COVID-19 from the time it began monitoring the numbers some nearly nine months ago.1The effect of COVID-19 goes beyond these number of cases, as many of them have already died.However, against this alarming situation, even more concern lurks underneath. Just 10 days previously, the WHO released its 2020 Global Tuberculosis Report.2Among other things, prominent mention in the 2020 Report is the threat that theCOVID-19 pandemic can reverse the gains made in TB control over recent years in many countries, including the Philippines.In 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Philippines is reported to rank fourth in terms of the number of TB cases,contributing 6% of the total global burden of TB.3 Computing this on a per capita basis paints an even darker picture: the Philippines has 554 TB cases per 100,000 population, exceeded worldwide only by Lesotho, a small country in Southern Africa with a population of just around 2% that of the Philippines.4Identifying new TB cases is a key strategy in TB control. It is an important step in identifying and initiating treatmentfor those who need it. However, gaps in estimated incidence and notifications have long been a problem in the Philippines.2,3And with the COVID-19 pandemic, this has now become bigger. The 2020 WHO Report says that there has been a dropof 50 to 75% in the monthly notifications for the April to June period compared to January 2020 in the Philippines. Sucha trend – reported in other countries as well – is attributed to under-reporting of new TB cases during this COVID-19pandemic.5-13 The sudden drop over a few months cannot be due to any sudden improvement of TB control but more to the challenges that the pandemic has had on the TB control programs. In many TB high burden but low-income countries like the Philippines, reallocation of human, financial and other resources from TB to the COVID-19 response is happening. For example, GeneXpert™ machines are being diverted for use in COVID-19 testing.14 Staff in national TB programs as well as healthcare frontliners are being assigned to COVID-19 related duties. Similar to other countries, community lockdowns, patient concerns on getting infected, lack of public transportation, and loss of jobs and its attendant financial consequences, among others, are also serious considerations limiting access to TB diagnosis and treatment in the Philippines.15Any benefit from social distancing and wearing of face masks to reduce TB transmission are likely outweighed by health service disruption.16 As is the case with other patient co-morbidities, the interaction between COVID-19 and tuberculosis have also been looked into. However, current data do not allow any meaningful conclusions.14,17 Because of similarities in presentation symptoms such as fever, cough and difficulty of breathing, the recognition of tuberculosis may also be confused with COVID-19.18,19All of these are predicted to further worsen TB incidence due to increased transmission and along with greater diseaseseverity will have a larger negative effect on GDP per capita, undernutrition and catastrophic costs to families.2According to the model presented in the 2020 Global TB Report, assuming a more conservative 50% decrease in case detection over a six-month period could result in 700,000 excess deaths due to TB, globally.2The economic burden of additional cases has also been estimated for other countries and is quite substantial.20In an article published in this issue of our journal, drug resistance is identified as the biggest risk for unsuccessfultreatment outcomes in patients with tuberculosis.21 There are already increasing RR/MDR TB cases in the country based on the results of the 2016 National TB Prevalence Survey and other data.2,4,22 Previous unsuccessful treatment continues to be a big driver in the development of this drug resistance; and unsurprisingly, we now see that drug resistance in turn further drives even more unsuccessful TB treatment.In the latest WHO country profile report, RR/MDR TB incidence is estimated at 3.8% overall; but shoots up to 28%in previously treated cases.23 Most importantly, success of treatment was reported in only 58% of RR/MDR TB cases started on second-line drugs. As MDR-TB becomes more prevalent, and person-to-person transmission becomes more common, we may soon end up with MDR-TB as a major initial presentation of TB in our country. This is definitely undesirable as treatment of MDR-TB requires significantly more financial resources compared to DS-TB and can further strain the already limited resources allocated for TB control in our country.
With the big challenges we face with the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting effect it presents to ongoing TB control,it is reasonable to fear that we will have more unsuccessful treatment of TB in the country. Even as this potentially increases the number of TB cases in general, the even greater threat of further increasing MDR-TB should make us even more concerned.We cannot afford to lose focus and momentum in our efforts to control TB. Others have in fact stated that the currentpandemic may actually be a good opportunity to evaluate and if needed, to revise some of the programs we have in TBcontrol.24,25 The WHO has also made some recommendations which we can hopefully follow as we maintain our vigilance on TB control during this pandemic.26The 2020 WHO Global Tuberculosis Report highlights many of the gains we have made in the Philippines. Hopefully,this COVID-19 pandemic will not push it back.
