Calcium (Ca) is the fifth most abundant element in the rocky planets. As a lithophile, refractory element, Ca does not partition into planetary cores nor is it volatilized during planetary accretion. These characteristics make Ca ideal for investigating the earliest stages of planetary formation and the subsequent chemical evolution of planetary mantles and crusts. This thesis presents observations of and explores the mechanisms involved in high-temperature mass-dependent Ca isotope fractionation in terrestrial, lunar, and meteoritic material. Chapter 1 reports Ca isotope fractionation among a co-genetic suite of samples from the Guelb el Azib ultramafic-mafic-anorthosite complex, which represents the fractional crystallization sequence of a terrestrial igneous magma chamber. The measurements imply that Ca isotope fractionation in an evolving crystallizing magma is mineralogically controlled and that the degree of fractionation can vary according to the Ca composition of the residual magma. Chapter 2 investigates ureilites, a distinctive group of achondritic meteorites, widely regarded to be mantle remnants of a disrupted asteroidal parent body. To date, it is not clear which of their features were inherited from the original chondritic body and which were created during post-accretionary igneous processes such as partial melting. L’environnement et la physiologie déterminent les compositions isotopiques du Ca de l’organisme des vertébrés et des mammifères en particulier. Ces constats ont permis de dégager des applications possibles de l’étude des isotopes du Ca, en biologie médicale pour le suivi de l’équilibre osseux chez les mammifères et en (paléo-)écologie pour l’étude des régimes alimentaires actuels et passés des vertébrés. Ces applications sont tributaires d’une meilleure compréhension fondamentale des causes de ces variations. Cette thèse a pour but de déterminer les principales causes de variabilité des compositions isotopiques du Ca chez les mammifères et l’humain. Un protocole d’analyse en solution par MC-ICP-MS est d’abord présenté puis deux méthodes d’échantillonnage sont comparées afin de réaliser des mesures de résolution spatiale accrue dans les tissus minéralisés. L’influence des sources alimentaires de Ca est ensuite discutée. La composition isotopique de l’alimentation humaine est variable du fait des compositions diverses des sources primaires de Ca et dépend particulièrement des proportions de produits laitiers dans l’alimentation. Il est démontré que les transitions nutritionnelles précoces, comme le sevrage du lait maternel, peuvent être tracées par les compositions de l’émail des dents de lait humaines. Les mécanismes des fractionnements isotopiques sont discutés sur la base d’observations chez l’humain et l’animal. These observations have allowed recognition of possible applications for Ca isotopes, in the field of medical biology, with the assessment of bone mineral balance in human, and in (palaeo-)ecology for the study of past and present day diets in vertebrates. Isotope composition of human diet is variable because of the diversity of Ca primary sources but also due to variations in dairy products proportions in diet. Early dietary transitions, such as weaning, can be studied using the Ca isotope compositions of human deciduous tooth enamel.Based on observations in human and other mammals, the mechanisms responsible for Ca isotope fractionations are discussed. Mestrado em Ciência e Engenharia de Materiais<br>Calcium oxide (CaO) powder targets have been successfully used at CERN-ISOLDE to produce neutron deficient exotic argon and carbon isotopes under proton irradiation at high temperatures (>1000oC). These targets outperform the other related targets for the production of the same beams. However, they presented either slow release rates (yields) from the beginning or a rapid decrease over time. This problem was believed to come from the target microstructure degradation, justifying the material investigation.
In order to do so, the synthesis, reactivity in ambient air and sintering kinetics of CaO were studied, through surface area determination by N2 adsorption, X-ray diffraction for crystalline phase identification and crystallite size determination, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy to investigate the microstructure.
The synthesis studies revealed that a nanometric material is obtained from the decarbonation of CaCO3 in vacuum at temperatures higher than 550oC, which is very reactive in air. This reactivity was studied, and it was observed that the CaO powder microstructure is changed through the reaction with air (hydration and carbonation of the oxide) and that this change is not completely reversible after thermal decomposition of the reaction products. Therefore, special care was taken in the target handling at CERN-ISOLDE. From the sintering kinetics, studied in the range of 1000-1200oC, it was determined that this material’s microstructure degrades, with the reduction of the specific surface area and decrease of the powder porosity. At 1200oC, the specific surface area reduction is accentuated, reaching values of 50% of surface area reduction in 10h. These results suggest that the use of high temperatures, equal or higher than 1000oC must be avoided, if the microstructural characteristics of the targets are to be preserved.
At CERN-ISOLDE, selected conditions for synthesis, handling of the target and target operation temperatures were chosen, based on the previous material research, and the obtained target material was tested under proton irradiation.
From the online studies, the newly developed target proved to show better initial and stable over time release rates of almost all isotopes investigated and especially the exotic ones. These results are essentially due to the nanometric characteristics of the produced target and to the use of operation and handling conditions that decreased the degradation of the microstructural characteristics.
Diffusion studies of Ar and Ne were also done in CaO through the application of a mathematical model, to the release curves of the respective isotopes at different temperatures, which enables the determination of the respective diffusion coefficients and activation energies.<br>Alvos de pós de oxido de cálcio (CaO) têm sido usados, com sucesso, no CERN-ISOLDE para produzir isótopos de Árgon (com défice de neutrões) e de carbono, sob irradiação com protões a alta temperatura (>1000oC). Estes alvos têm mostrado um desempenho superior a outros alvos usados para produzir os mesmos feixes. Contudo, apresentam baixas taxas de libertação de isótopos desde o início de operação ou uma redução rápida com o tempo. Suspeitou-se que este problema se devia à degradação da microestrutura do material, justificando a sua investigação.
Assim, a síntese, reatividade em ar ambiente e a cinética de sinterização do CaO foram estudadas, nomeadamente através da determinação da área superficial especifica por adsorção de N2, difração de raios-X para identificação de fases e determinação do tamanho de cristalite e microscopia eletrónica de varrimento e transmissão para o estudo da microestrutura.
Os estudos de síntese do CaO revelaram que um material nanométrico, e muito reativo em ar, é obtido através da descarbonatação do CaCO3 em vácuo a temperaturas superiores a 550oC. Esta reatividade foi estudada e observou-se que a microestrutura do pó de CaO é alterada por reação com o ar (hidratação e carbonatação do óxido) e que esta alteração não é totalmente reversível após decomposição térmica dos produtos de reação. Assim, foram tomados cuidados especiais no manuseamento dos alvos de CaO. Da cinética de sinterização, estudada na gama de 1000-1200oC, foi concluído que a microestrutura deste material se degrada com redução da área superficial específica e diminuição da porosidade do pó. A 1200oC, a redução da área superficial específica é acentuada, atingindo-se valores de 50% de redução em cerca de 10h. Estes resultados indicam que a utilização de temperaturas elevadas, iguais ou superiores a 1000oC, devem ser evitadas se se pretendem preservar as características microestruturais dos alvos.
No CERN-ISOLDE, as condições de síntese, de manuseamento do material e temperatura de operação do alvo foram escolhidas, com base nos estudos anteriores, e o material resultante foi testado sobre irradiação de protões.
Dos estudos online, o alvo desenvolvido provou ter melhores taxas de libertação iniciais e que se mantêm ao longo do tempo de libertação, comparativamente a outros alvos de CaO previamente usados no CERN-ISOLDE. Isto verificou-se em praticamente todos os isótopos estudados, especialmente nos exóticos. Estes resultados foram atribuídos às caraterísticas nanométricas do alvo produzido e à utilização de condições de manuseamento e de operação, tais que a degradação das características microestruturais do alvo é reduzida.
Estudos de difusão de Árgon e Néon foram feitos no CaO através da aplicação de um modelo matemático às curvas de libertação dos respetivos isótopos a diferentes temperaturas de operação, que permitiram a determinação dos respetivos coeficientes de difusão e energias de ativação.

Le calcium est le cinquième élément le plus abondant de la Terre silicatée. Son intérêt découle de son abondance dans la croûte terrestre et de l'existence d'une grande quantité de minéraux le contenant. Un fractionnement maximum, dont les causes précises ne sont pas connues, de 1,3 par u. M. A a été mesuré à ce jour. Le travail réalisé durant ce doctorat s'intègre à ces nouvelles études sur les isotopes du Ca. Un protocole de mesure permettant de s'affranchir du fractionnement instrumental a tout d'abord été développé au Centre de Géochimie de la Surface. Après séparation chimique sur résine échangeuse d'ions, les compositions isotopiques en Ca ont été déterminées au spectromètre de masse à thermo-ionisation par une technique employant un double spike. L'expression des rapports isotopiques du Ca sous forme de delta requiert l'emploi d'un matériel de référence. Aucun standard international n'existant pour les isotopes du Ca, le standard carbonaté SRM 915a du NIST a été proposé. L'eau de mer, seul échantillon commun à la majorité des études antérieures, a été calibré en fonction de ce standard carbonaté et utilisé pour ce travail. Ce protocole a ensuite été appliqué à l'étude du bilan océanique du Ca. L'étude d'eaux continentales a permis de contraindre le flux de Ca arrivant aux océans. Il en résulte une variabilité limitée de d44Ca (0,5 ) à l'embouchure des grands fleuves et pour les eaux hydrothermales. Aucune relation n'a en outre été observée entre d44Ca et la lithologie ou le climat des bassins versants étudiés. Ceci a permis de calculer une composition isotopique moyenne en Ca arrivant aux océans égale à -1,1 ± 0,2 et de suggérer sa constance au cours du temps. Il résulte de cette valeur que l'océan actuel est à l'état stationnaire par rapport aux isotopes du calcium. L'étude du d44Ca de phosphates marins du Miocène et du Pléistocène, qui reflètent la paléo-variation de l'eau de mer au cours du temps, a montré que cela n'a pas toujours été le cas par le passé. Ainsi, à 22 Ma, une incursion du d44Ca vers des valeurs plus positives suggère que l'intensité des flux entrants et sortants a varié, mais non leur signature isotopique<br>First, a measurement protocol was developed at the Centre de Géochimie de la Surface to avoid instrumental fractionation. After chemical separation on ion exchanging resins, the Ca isotopic compositions were measured on a thermo-ionisation mass spectrometer, using a double-spike technique. The Ca isotopic ratios were expressed in a delta notation. To do this, a reference material is needed. No international standard presently exists for Ca isotopes. For that reason, we proposed to use the SRM 915a carbonaceous standard from the NIST. Seawater, the only common sample of most of previous studies has also been used: it was calibrated against the carbonaceous standard and used in present study. This protocol was then applied to study the Ca oceanic budget. The isotope data of continental waters allowed to constrain the Ca flux to the ocean. A limited variability of d44Ca (0. 5 ) was recorded at the outlet of main rivers or for hydrothermal vents. Moreover, no relationship was observed between d44Ca and the lithology or the climate of the studied watersheds. This allowed to determine the mean Ca isotopic composition of the Ca flux to the ocean (-1. 1 ± 0. 2 ) and to suggest that this value remains rather constant through time. A consequence of this value is that present-day seawater is at steady-state with regard to Ca isotopes. The d44Ca study of marine phosphates from Miocene and Pleistocene, which reflect the paleo-seawater variations through time, has shown that this was not necessarily the case in the past. At 22 Ma, a deviation in d44Ca through more positive values suggests that the intensity of the incoming and outcoming fluxes changed, but not their isotopic composition

Over the course of my PhD, I developed the analytical capability to measure calcium isotopes at the University of Cambridge and analyzed calcium isotopes in a range of fluids and minerals in modern and past environments. After discussing my methodological development, I report my work in the glacial precursor to the Dead Sea. Here, the calcium isotope composition of aragonite varies synchronously with lake level fluctuations over the last 70,000 years. My numerically reconstructed lake calcium budget led me to conclude that 20,000 years ago, the Dead Sea was wetter than modern conditions, rather than colder and drier, as had previously been proposed. The primary focus of my PhD research was understanding the sedimentary sink for carbon. The formation of authigenic carbonate in marine sediments is caused by the microbial degradation of organic matter. I used pore fluid measurements and a numerical model to identify zones of authigenic carbonate precipitation. This knowledge was then combined with an understanding of the microbial processes that occur beneath the seafloor to determine the link between microbial activity and authigenic carbonate formation. Two processes, sulfate reduction and the anaerobic oxidation of methane were determined to be the main drivers of authigenic carbonate precipitation. In order to assess the importance of the carbon isotope signal imparted by each of the two identified processes, I created Artificial Neural Networks to predict the areal extent of authigenic carbonate precipitation and the dominant microbial process driving the precipitation. My ANNs identified that 37% of the modern seafloor is precipitating authigenic carbonate, which leads to a flux of 1.2*10^12 moles of carbon per year, of which 88% is due to the anaerobic oxidation of methane, and 12% is due to sulfate reduction. This represents 2-3% of the modern global carbon deposition, however I was able to show that this would be significantly higher in the geological past when ocean conditions were vastly different to how they are today. Finally, I conclude by proposing that some variations in the global carbon cycle in the past can be explored by linking marine calcium concentrations to authigenic carbonate formation and the flux of alkalinity from the seafloor.

Les signatures isotopiques des minéraux carbonatés sont utilisées pour caractériser de nombreux processus géochimiques. Cette thèse a pour but de déterminer les vitesses auxquelles ces signatures isotopiques peuvent être altérées lors des interactions entre les fluides et les minéraux. A cette fin, une série d'études expérimentales a été conduite avec la dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2), la magnésite (MgCO3) et la calcite (CaCO3). On a mesuré l'évolution temporelle des compositions isotopiques de Ca et Mg pendant une série d'expériences de dissolution en réacteur fermé de la dolomite à des températures de 50°C à 126°C. A T < 120°C la composition isotopique du calcium dans la phase fluide est identique à celle de la dolomite initiale, mais au-delà de cette température, la signature isotopique du calcium dans le fluide (delta(44/42)Ca fluid) après 4 semaines était 0.6±0.1‰ plus lourde que l'originale. En revanche, le rapport delta(26/24)Mg du fluide reste égal à celui de la dolomite à toutes les températures étudiées. Ces résultats indiquent un double transfert de calcium vers et depuis la structure de la dolomite à T > 120°C. En outre, ces résultats suggèrent que la difficulté de la dolomite à précipiter à température ambiante doit être la conséquence de l'incapacité de Mg à s'incorporer dans la structure du minéral. Dans une autre étude on a conduit des expériences de dissolution de la magnésite à 25°C en solution aqueuses pour différents pH et pression de CO2. On a trouvé que la composition isotopique du fluide à proximité de l'équilibre chimique était différente de celle du solide, ce qui reflète un double transfert de Mg en direction et hors du minéral à température ambiante. Cependant, un seul mécanisme de fractionnement ne peut expliquer le comportement isotopique de Mg observé. La dernière partie de ce travail, consacrée au fractionnement isotopique du carbone dans le système calcite-eau, montre une évolution du fractionnement isotopique de cet élément vers le fractionnement isotopique à l'équilibre d'une durée d'une année après l'atteinte de l'équilibre chimique entre la calcite et l'eau. Les vitesses de rééquilibrage des isotopes de carbone sont ainsi quatre ordres de grandeurs plus lentes que la vitesse d'équilibrage de la calcite avec la solution. Ceci suggère que l'étape limitante dans le processus de rééquilibrage des isotopes du carbone est le transport de cet élément dans le cristal après l'échange isotopique à la surface de ce dernier. Les résultats de cette thèse indiquent que la signature isotopique de Mg, Ca et C des carbonates n'est pas invariante à l'échelle des temps géologiques et qu'elle peut être altérée durant l'interaction de ces minéraux avec l'eau. Ainsi, la préservation des signatures isotopiques des carbonates requiert d'une faible perméabilité des roches ou bien quelque mécanisme inhibant les échanges des métaux et du carbone à la surface des cristaux<br>The isotopic signatures of carbonate minerals have been applied to illuminate a plethora of natural geochemical processes. This thesis is aimed to assess the rates and or conditions at which such isotope signatures might be altered by fluid-mineral interaction through a series of systematic experimental studies performed with dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) magnesite (MgCO3) and calcite (Ca-CO3). Ca and Mg isotopic compositions were measured as a function of time during closed-system stoichiometric dolomite dissolution experiments at 50 to 126°C. Although identical to that of the original dolomite at low temperatures, at temperatures >120 °C, the calcium isotopic signature of fluid phase (delta(44/42)Ca fluid) became 0.6±0.1‰ higher than that of the dissolving dolomite over a 4-week period. In contrast, the delta(26/24)Mg fluid, remained equal to that of the dolo-mite both at low and high temperatures. This set of experiments evidences the two-way transfer of calcium in and out of the dolomite structure at elevated temperatures. The results suggest that the inhability of dolomite to precipitate at these conditions is due to the difficulty of Mg to be reincorporated in the dolomite structure. In a follow-up study, magnesite was dissolved at 25°C in the presence of fluids with distinct pH and CO2 pressures. The isotopic compositions of the fluid differed from that of the solid at near-to chemical equilibrium indicating the two-way transfer of magnesium into this mineral at ambient temperatures. A single fractionation mechanism cannot explain the distinct Mg isotope behaviors observed. Further work on carbon isotope exchanges in the calcite water system shows a slow by steady evolution of the carbon isotopic composition towards the accepted equilibrium fractionation factor over the course of nearly year-long experiments after the system had attained bulk chemical equilibrium. Carbon isotope reequilibration rates were found to be approximately four orders of magnitude slower than that of bulk calcite dissolution, suggesting that the rate limiting step to the carbon isotope reequilibration process is the transport of carbon into and out of the bulk mineral after it has exchanged on the surface. The results of this thesis suggest that the Mg, Ca and C isotopic signatures in carbonate minerals are not invariant over geological time-frames and can be readily altered by water-mineral interaction. Such results indicate that the preservation of carbonate mineral signatures require low permeability rock formations or some inhibitory mechanism limiting metal and carbon exchange

Ce travail de thèse a appréhendé les mécanismes de stockage/libération, d’un point de vue élémentaire et isotopique, du calcium (Ca) et du strontium (Sr) sur ou dans des phases minérales communes des sols (minéraux primaires, minéraux argileux, oxy-hydroxydes, carbonate pédogénétiques). Une méthode de mesure robuste du δ88Sr a dû être développée et validée par la mesure de matériaux de références internationaux, pour la plupart jamais mesuré dans la littérature. Les résultats montrent que l’adsorption du Ca sur des minéraux phyllosilicatés génère un fractionnement isotopique par prélèvement préférentiel de l’isotope léger (40Ca) dans nos conditions expérimentales lorsque les minéraux possèdent une charge structurale et une surface spécifique importante et/ou un espace interfoliaire ouvert à l’adsorption de cations hydratés. Une étude sur des rhizolithes en milieu naturel a mis en avant que l’utilisation des isotopes du Ca et du Sr permet un traçage de source et de mécanismes efficaces dans les thématiques touchant au stockage de ces deux éléments dans les sols<br>This PhD thesis examined the mechanisms of storage and release, from and elementary and isotopically point of view, of calcium (Ca) and strontium (Sr) onto or into mineral phases commonly encountered within soils (primary minerals, clay minerals, oxy-hydroxides, pedogenic carbonate). A robust δ88Sr measurements method had to be developed in the laboratory and validated by the measurement of international reference materials, mostly never measured in the literature. The results of this work show that Ca adsorption onto phyllosilicate minerals generates a quantifiable isotopic fractionation by preferential uptake of the light isotope (40Ca) under our experimental conditions when the minerals have a significant structural charge and specific surface area and/or an interlayer space open to hydrated cations adsorption. A study on rhizoliths in natural environment has also highlighted that the combination of Ca and Sr isotopes allows an effective tracing of sources and mechanisms in the problematic related to the storage of these two elements within soils

The applications of calcium-isotope measurements in marine carbonates are explored in several different contexts within this thesis. As a record of global ion fluxes, seawater calcium-isotope ratios can be used as tracers for large weathering imbalances, which develop as a feedback system in response to intervals of climate change. This approach provides valuable constraints on the complex climatic and oceanographic phenomena known as the Oceanic Anoxic Events. Over much longer timescales, the calcium-isotope ratio of seawater is influenced by steady-state processes that reflect the evolution of seawater chemistry. To understand these influences, the modern calcium-isotope budget is assessed quantitatively using a compilation of marine carbonate samples, revealing several distinctive components of the carbonate burial sink that can affect the steady-state balance of the calcium cycle. Changes in the major ion composition of seawater and in the organisms that contribute to sedimentary carbonate burial are shown to contribute significantly to the geological record of seawater calcium-isotope ratios. The importance of skeletal carbonate in the calcium cycle leads to another application of calcium isotopes towards understanding biomineralization. This large and complex topic is approached with calcium-isotope data from two unique growth experiments that constrain some of the mechanisms by which biogenic aragonite acquires its geochemical signatures. This range of topics presents a diverse, but by no means exclusive, sample of the topics that are accessible for investigation through calcium-isotope analysis. The potential of this isotopic tool is demonstrated by the breadth of environments and timescales represented in this work.

Le calcium est le cinquième élément le plus abondant de la Terre silicatée. Son intérêt découle de son abondance dans la croûte terrestre et de l'existence d'une grande quantité de minéraux le contenant. Un fractionnement maximum, dont les causes précises ne sont pas connues, de 1,3 ‰ par u.m.a a été mesuré à ce jour. Le travail réalisé durant ce doctorat s'intègre à ces nouvelles études sur les isotopes du Ca.<br />Un protocole de mesure permettant de s'affranchir du fractionnement instrumental a tout d'abord été développé au Centre de Géochimie de la Surface. Après séparation chimique sur résine échangeuse d'ions, les compositions isotopiques en Ca ont été déterminées au spectromètre de masse à thermo-ionisation par une technique employant un double spike. L'expression des rapports isotopiques du Ca sous forme de delta requiert l'emploi d'un matériel de référence. Aucun standard international n'existant pour les isotopes du Ca, le standard carbonaté SRM 915a du NIST a été proposé. L'eau de mer, seul échantillon commun à la majorité des études antérieures, a été calibré en fonction de ce standard carbonaté et utilisé pour ce travail.<br />Ce protocole a ensuite été appliqué à l'étude du bilan océanique du Ca. L'étude d'eaux continentales a permis de contraindre le flux de Ca arrivant aux océans. Il en résulte une variabilité limitée de δ44Ca (0,5 ‰) à l'embouchure des grands fleuves et pour les eaux hydrothermales. Aucune relation n'a en outre été observée entre δ44Ca et la lithologie ou le climat des bassins versants étudiés. Ceci a permis de calculer une composition isotopique moyenne en Ca arrivant aux océans égale à -1,1 ± 0,2 ‰ et de suggérer sa constance au cours du temps. Il résulte de cette valeur que l'océan actuel est à l'état stationnaire par rapport aux isotopes du calcium. L'étude du δ44Ca de phosphates marins du Miocène et du Pléistocène, qui reflètent la paléo-variation de l'eau de mer au cours du temps, a montré que cela n'a pas toujours été le cas par le passé. Ainsi, à 22 Ma, une incursion du δ44Ca vers des valeurs plus positives suggère que l'intensité des flux entrants et sortants a varié, mais non leur signature isotopique.

La limite Crétacé-Paléogène (KPg, -66 Ma) est associée à l'une des plus grandes perturbations environnementale de l'histoire récente de la Terre. Cette crise, liée à la mise en place d'une province magmatique de premier ordre (traps du Deccan) et/ou à un impact météoritique (formation du cratère de Chixculub) se traduit entre autres par une perturbation profonde de la bioproduction carbonatée océanique. Si de nombreuses questions subsistent quant à l'importance relative de l'impact et du volcanisme dans les perturbations de la limite KPg, la modification de la composition chimique du système océan-atmosphère par l'émission d'énormes quantités d'acide sulfurique et carbonique d'origines volcaniques a probablement joué un rôle clé dans la crise Crétacé-PaléogèneDurant ce projet de thèse j'ai réalisé des enregistrements isotopiques à haute résolution des isotopes stables du soufre et du calcium à travers la transitons Crétacé-Paléogène. Ces enregistrements sont basés sur des échantillons monospécifiques de foraminifères planctoniques et benthiques issue du pacifique équatorial.Les enregistrements de δ44/40Ca benthiques et planctoniques avant et après la limite K-Pg nous ont permis de mettre en évidence une succession d'épisodes de changements de l'alcalinité océanique liés à l'augmentation de l'altération continentale et à la crise de biocalcification causée par les émissions de CO2 du volcanisme du Deccan. La compensation des carbonates par la dissolution des sédiments carbonatés, la réduction de la biocalcification et/ou l'augmentation de l'altération continentale ont dû se produire pour compenser l'excès de CO2. Par conséquence, cela a entraîné des changements rapides dans la chimie des carbonates océaniques, en combinaison avec une réduction de l'exportation de l'alcalinité de surface en réponse à la crise de biominéralisation planctonique du Paléogène précoce.L'examen de la perturbation du cycle du soufre quant lui, soutient plutôt l'idée que l'extinction de masse à travers la transition K-Pg n'est pas être associée à une expansion globale de conditions anoxique, contrairement aux différents événements d'extinction de masse du Phanérozoïque, où il existe des preuves multiples du de développement de condition anoxique associé aux perturbations du cycle du carbone. The events associated to the KPg boundary include one of the strongest known oceanic calcareous bioproduction crisis and are coeval with a bolid impact (that formed the Chixculub crater) and the emplacement of a Large Igneous Province (Deccan traps). Many studies investigated the mechanism(s) triggering the environmental perturbations and many questions remain unanswered regarding the relative contribution of the volcanic event and the impact on the KPg crisis. Yet, modification of the ocean-atmosphere system composition through massive input of sulfuric and carbonic acid very likely played a key, underconstrained, role.During this thesis project, I conducted high-resolution stable sulphur and calcium isotope records across the Cretaceous-Paleogene transition. These records are based on monospecific samples of planktonic and benthic foraminifera from the equatorial Pacific.The benthic and planktonic δ44/40Ca records before and after the K-Pg boundary allowed us to demonstrate a succession of episodes of ocean alkalinity change related to the increase in continental weathering and the biocalcification crisis caused by CO2 emissions from Deccan volcanism. Carbonate compensation through dissolution of carbonate sediments, reduction of biocalcification and/or increase in continental weathering had to occur to compensate for the excess CO2. As a result, this led to rapid changes in oceanic carbonate chemistry, in combination with a reduction in the export of surface alkalinity in response to the early Paleogene planktonic biomineralisation crisisExamination of sulphur cycle disruption instead supports the idea that mass extinction through the K-Pg transition is not associated with a global expansion of anoxic conditions, in contrast to the various Phanerozoic mass extinction events, where there are multiples evidences for the development of anoxic conditions associated with carbon cycle disruption. These findings are consistent with micropalaeontological observations that show no benthic foraminiferal mass extinction.This multi-proxy geochemical approach has the advantage of allowing a more detailed assessment of key parameters such as carbonate chemistry and oceanic anoxia across the Cretaceous-Paleogene transition, thus providing a clearer global picture of biogeochemical perturbations around this time

We test the fidelity of shallow-water gastropod skeletons as multi-proxy archives of seasonal paleo-environmental change by performing isotopic and trace-metal analyses on specimens of Conus ermineus from the Gulf of Mexico. Four adult specimens were collected from Stetson Bank in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary during the summer of 2002. Shell samples were milled along axes of growth to produce time-series profiles spanning up to eight years. We corrected the profiles for growth rate effects and compared the tuned results with in situ temperature and salinity records at the reef surface and temperature profiles from nearby surface buoys. Examination of sample densities in δ18O cycles shows that shell growth is faster during summers and slower during winters. Tuning the profiles versus time yields δ18O values that co-vary closely with seasonal temperatures to a high degree of coherency (R2 = 0.84). The δ13C profiles show cyclic variation modified by ontogenetic decreases in δ13C. These ontogenetic trends are attributable to decreasing metabolic efficiency, while seasonal cycles reflect hydrographic changes in the gastropods habitat. Salinity and δ13C of dissolved inorganic carbon show a strong correlation at Stetson Bank (R2 = 0.80), and early summer shell δ13C minima coincide with local salinity minima during times of peak river discharge. The terminations of these δ13C minima occur during annual upcoast reversals of shelf currents in this area. These effects are augmented by summer stratification and productivity minima that further decrease seawater δ13C. Sr/Ca ratios increase through ontogeny, most likely due to decreasing metabolic efficiency. However, seasonal variations in Sr/Ca profiles show strong similarity with δ18O profiles, confirming the temperature dependence of Sr/Ca and minimal influence of salinity on shell δ18O at Stetson Bank. The results of this study show that tuned δ18O and Sr/Ca profiles can be used to reconstruct seasonal paleotemperatures. Carbon isotope profiles and environmental data also demonstrate the utility of Conus δ13C as a proxy for freshwater flux and shelf circulation.

Cette thèse a pour but d'identifier et de préciser les processus biotiques et abiotiques qui contrôlent le comportement du Ca et plus spécifiquement le fractionnement des isotopes du Ca à l'interface géosphère-biosphère-hydrosphère en combinant différentes études expérimentales (hydroponiques et microcosmes). Les résultats obtenus lors des expérimentations hydroponiques ont permis d'identifier 3 niveaux de fractionnement des isotopes du Ca au sein des végétaux, ces 3 niveaux de fractionnement sont induits par des mécanismes physico-chimiques qui enrichissent les organes de végétaux en 40Ca.Les résultats des expérimentations hydroponiques montrent également que l'évolution de la composition isotopique du Ca de la solution nutritive et des plantes suit une loi de fractionnement des isotopes du Ca à l'équilibre (αplantes/solution nutritive = 0,99858). Les expérimentations abiotiques en microcosmes, quant à elles, indiquent que la dissolution de l'apatite par des acides organiques ou inorganiques n'influence pas la signature isotopique en Ca de la phase dissoute résultante. À l'inverse, lors des expérimentations biotiques en microcosmes, seule l'action combinée des racines de pins et des bactéries sur un substratum d'apatite enrichit la solution qui percole en 44Ca de 0,22‰.

Les eaux souterraines forment un système dynamique avec une grande hétérogénéité spatiale et temporelle, et agissent en tant qu'intermédiaire entre les processus de surface dans la zone critique et les fleuves qui apportent les solutés vers l'océan. Des études récentes révèlent que la décharge sous-marine d'eaux souterraines (SGD) est une voie dominante pour l'apport de nutriments aux côtes, dépassant souvent les flux de nutriments fluviaux, formant ainsi une composante importante des cycles biogéochimiques marins. Cependant, les SGD restent négligées dans les bilans de nutriments et sont difficiles à quantifier. Parmi ceux-ci, le silicium (Si) est un nutriment essentiel pour les diatomées, l'un des principaux producteurs primaires des écosystèmes aquatiques. Les bassins versants tropicaux humides avec précipitations saisonnières de mousson, généralement trouvés en Inde, favorisent une altération intense des silicates, ce qui entraîne des flux élevés de Si vers les eaux. Cependant, l'agriculture peut moduler le cycle de Si ce qui nécessite une évaluation plus poussée, notamment dans les eaux souterraines. Cette thèse étudie trois aspects majeurs du cycle de Si dans les eaux souterraines : i) l'impact des modifications de l'utilisation des terres et des précipitations de mousson sur Si dissous (DSi) et la signature isotopique de Si (δ30Si) des eaux souterraines en comparant un bassin versant agricole (Berambadi) et un bassin versant forestier (Mule Hole) à deux saisons, ii) élucider les interactions entre eaux souterraines et eaux de surface dans le plus grand système estuarien de mousson en Inde (Godavari) et, iii) quantifier les flux de Si apportés par la contribution en eaux douces des SGD vers l'Océan Indien grâce à une série d’échantillons d'eaux souterraines côtières. Pour cela, nous utilisons des traceurs isotopiques : isotopes de l'eau et 87Sr/86Sr pour identifier les sources et les mélanges, δ30Si et rapports Ge/Si pour tracer le cycle du Si, et δ44/40Ca pour déterminer l'altération des carbonates. Ce travail a permis d'augmenter la moyenne des δ30Si des eaux souterraines mondiales de 0,49±0,9‰ (1SD, n=66) à 0,81±0,9‰ (1SD, n=224), inférieure aux δ30Si des eaux de rivière et de l’océan. Nous montrons que les signatures δ30Si des eaux souterraines ne sont pas impactées par les modifications de l'utilisation des terres ni la saisonnalité, et sont principalement contrôlées par l'altération des silicates et la formation d'argiles secondaires. Les eaux souterraines présentent généralement un comportement stable avec un équilibre dynamique entre l'apport de Si et la formation de phases secondaires. Les δ30Si issus de l'altération, de l'adsorption et de l'absorption par les plantes qui se produisent dans les horizons peu profonds du sol et du saprolite sont partiellement homogénéisés par l'altération du régolithe dans la zone profonde. Les δ30Si de l'estuaire de Godavari présentent une variabilité saisonnière importante, principalement due aux diatomées et parfois à un apport hétérogène issus des eaux souterraines pendant la saison sèche, alors que l'altération des silicates et la formation d'argiles secondaires dominent pendant la saison humide. L’estuaire est un filtre important pour l’apport en Si à l'océan, en retirant ~15% du DSi total apporté par le fleuve Godavari. Les δ44/40Ca dans l'estuaire (1,3±0,5‰, 1SD, n=16) et ses eaux souterraines (1,6±0,7‰, 1SD, n=15) sont très hétérogènes. Le fractionnement isotopique du Ca, tant dans l'estuaire que dans les eaux souterraines, est principalement dû à la précipitation des carbonates secondaires, un processus qui nécessiterait une étude plus approfondie. Enfin, DSi et δ30Si des eaux souterraines côtières indiennes indiquent que les apports d’eaux douces par SGD contribuent à <1% du flux total de Si apporté par les fleuves ce qui est considéré comme ayant un impact insignifiant sur les budgets océaniques de Si et d'isotopes dans l'Océan Indien Nord<br>Groundwater forms a dynamic system exhibiting spatial and temporal heterogeneity, and acts as an intermediate between surface processes occurring in critical zone and the riverine systems, which ultimately delivers solutes from continents to ocean. Recent studies reveal that the submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is a dominant pathway for nutrient delivery to the coastal ocean, often exceeding riverine nutrient fluxes, thus forming a significant component of oceanic biogeochemical cycling. However, SGD remains overlooked in coastal nutrient budgets and is difficult to quantify given large spatial and temporal variability. Among the elements delivered to the coast through SGD, silicon (Si) forms a key nutrient for diatoms, one of the dominant primary producers in freshwaters, estuary and coastal ecosystems. Tropical humid watersheds with seasonal monsoonal precipitation, commonly found in Indian subcontinent, favors intense silicate weathering resulting in high Si fluxes to surface and groundwaters. However, anthropogenic activities including agriculture and damming can significantly modulate Si cycling and requires further evaluation, particularly in groundwater. The present research investigates three major aspects of groundwater Si cycling: i) the impact of land use alterations (such as agriculture) and monsoon precipitation in groundwater dissolved silicon (DSi) and silicon isotopic signature (δ30Si) by comparing an agricultural (Berambadi) and forested (Mule Hole) watersheds across two seasons, ii) elucidating groundwater-surface water interactions in the largest monsoonal estuarine system in India (Godavari) and, iii) quantify the fresh submarine groundwater derived Si fluxes to Indian Ocean using a series of coastal groundwaters along Indian coastline. We employ multiple isotopic tracers to understand biogeochemical processes in groundwater including water isotopes and 87Sr/86Sr to understand sources and mixing, δ30Si and Ge/Si ratios to trace Si cycling, and δ44/40Ca to decipher carbonate weathering in critical zone. The present work increased the δ30Si average of global groundwater from 0.49±0.9‰ (1SD, n=66) to 0.81±0.9‰ (1SD, n=224), lower than the river water and seawater δ30Si. We show that the δ30Si signatures of groundwater are not impacted by land use alterations and seasonal monsoon, and are primarily driven by silicate weathering and secondary clay formation in soil and saprolite. Groundwater system generally exhibits a steady state behavior with a dynamic equilibrium between Si supply and formation of secondary phases. We conclude that Si isotopic signatures of weathering, adsorption, and plant uptake occurring in the shallow soil and saprolite horizons are partly overprinted and homogenized by the regolith weathering in the deep critical zone. In the second part of the thesis, we study Godavari estuary and adjacent groundwater to discern sources vs. mixing vs. processes along this land-to-ocean interface. The δ30Si signatures of estuary exhibit significant temporal variability, primarily driven by diatom uptake and some heterogeneous groundwater discharge during dry season while silicate weathering and secondary clay formation in the basin dominate during wet season. We note that estuaries can act as significant filters for Si supply to ocean, removing ~15% of the total DSi supplied by the Godavari river. The δ44/40Ca composition in Godavari estuary (1.3±0.5‰, 1SD, n=16) and groundwaters (1.6±0.7‰, 1SD, n=15) are highly heterogenous. The Ca isotopic fractionation in both estuary and groundwater are primarily driven by precipitation of secondary carbonates, a process that would require further study. Finally, the dissolved silicon and δ30Si of coastal groundwater all over India indicates that fresh SGD discharge contributes to <1% of the total Si flux of the rivers and is considered to have insignificant impact on oceanic Si and isotopic budgets in North Indian Ocean

Calcium isotope ratios (<sup>44</sup>Ca/<sup>42</sup>Ca) have shown promise as a milk dietary tracer. Previous studies have focused on bone but, due to homeostatic processes, δ<sup>44/42</sup>Ca values are highly variable. This has greatly complicated the identification of mammal milk consumption through bone analysis, resulting in a search for an alternative. This thesis describes controlled studies to assess the effects of milk consumption on δ<sup>44/42</sup>Ca values in bulk and sequential samples of dental enamel, using modern samples from Yorkshire, England, the Isle of Hoy, Scotland, and archaeological samples from Abu Hureyra, Syria. The samples from Yorkshire consisted of dental enamel, ewe milk, feed and bone. Dental enamel was sampled from the Hoy sheep. Milk and plants are the greatest contributors of calcium in the mammal diet. Feed and ewe milk samples confirmed that milk has lower δ<sup>44/42</sup>Ca values than plants in the diet, and with a common diet between ewes, uniform milk δ<sup>44/42</sup>Ca values are produced. Also, there is a significant difference between bulk molar enamel δ<sup>44/42</sup>Ca values between males and females, with males having higher values. Additionally, analysis of bulk and sequential samples of Hoy mature sheep molar enamel, although mass fractionation effects were small, produced δ<sup>44/42</sup>Ca values with a clear isotopic offset between the enamel likely formed during nursing, weaning and the full conversion to a plant diet. The δ<sup>44/42</sup>Ca values, once associated with dental development chronologies, led to the identification of a clear pattern of nursing and weaning in the enamel of the first and second molars of sheep with known dietary and weaning histories. The modern results were used to identify patterns of ancient nursing and weaning. Although evidence was insufficient to establish early weaning of the Abu Hureyra sheep, this research successfully established the potential of this approach for investigating milk production and consumption in the archaeological record.

L'étude des noyaux riches en neutrons permet de sonder la matière nucléaire en fonction du degré d'isospin et d'observer l'évolution des fermetures de couches loin de la stabilité. De récents travaux expérimentaux ont montré l'apparition d'un nouveau nombre magique à N=32 dont les effets sont particulièrement prononcés pour 52Ca. Les isotopes de calcium très riches en neutrons (N>29) sont en effet des noyaux clés pour tester l'interaction neutron-neutron effective dans la couche fp grâce à la simplicité de leur fonction d'onde due à la fermeture de couche Z=20. L'étude des isotopes 51,52,53Ca a été réalisée par la décroissance bêta des noyaux 51,52,53K auprès du séparateur de masse ISOLDE au CERN avec un dispositif très efficace comprenant les multidétecteurs TONNERRE et LEND pour les neutrons retardés et deux détecteurs MINIBALL pour les rayonnements gamma. Lors de l'analyse des données, une nouvelle méthode a été mise au point pour déterminer le nombre absolu de décroissances des isotopes de potassium par la modélisation du profil d'extraction des ions de l'ensemble cible-source au cours du temps. De nombreux états liés et non liés ont également pu être mis en évidence dans 51,52,53Ca sur un domaine en énergie d'excitation de plus de 11 MeV. Parallèlement, des calculs de modèle en couches ont été entrepris dans la couche fp et la modification de certains monopoles dans la voie d'isospin T=1 a permis la mise au point d'une nouvelle interaction KB3Gm reproduisant bien les résultats spectroscopiques nouvellement obtenus pour les isotopes 51,52,53Ca. Cette interaction prédit en outre un état 2+ autour de 2 MeV dans 54Ca. Recent experimental studies have pointed out a new magic number at N=32 with strong features for 52Ca. Indeed neutron rich calcium isotopes (N>29) are key nuclei to fix the effective neutron-neutron interaction in fp shell due to the simplicity of the Z=20 wave function. The study of 51,52,53Ca isotopes has been performed at the CERN-ISOLDE mass separator facility by beta-decay of 51,52,53K. The experimental set-up was composed of the TONNERRE and the LEND detector array dedicated to the observation of the delayed neutrons and of two MINIBALL clusters for gamma detection. A new method has been developed to determine the absolute decay number of K isotopes by modelling the time evolution of the ions extraction from the target-ion-source ensemble. Moreover, a lot of new bound and unbound states have been observed in 51,52,53Ca in a wide energy range up to 11 MeV. Shell model calculations have been performed in the fp shell and some monopole corrections in the T=1 isospin channel have been done, giving rise to a new KB3Gm effective interaction. Calculations with this interaction well agree with new spectroscopic results on 51,52,53Ca and predict a 2+ state around 2 MeV in 54Ca. Such a future experimental observation would sign the non appearence of a new magic number at N=34

Les biocarbonates produits par les organismes marins tels que les foraminifères ou les coraux sont des archives importantes pour étudier les environnements et climats du passé. Depuis les travaux de H. Urey en 1947, il est établi que la composition isotopique en oxygène-18 (δ18O) des carbonates reflète à la fois la température de formation et le rapport isotopique (18O/16O) de l'eau de mer. Cette relation, supposément fondée sur l'équilibre thermodynamique entre l'eau et le carbonate, peut cependant être perturbée soit par des paramètres environnementaux, soit par des mécanismes biologiques . Chez certains organismes, comme les coraux, ces « effets vitaux » se manifestent par des déséquilibres isotopiques flagrants, qui compliquent l'interprétation d'une partie non négligeable du registre sédimentaire fossile. En réponse à ces problèmes, cette thèse adopte une approche novatrice en tirant partie de nouveaux traceurs isotopiques, les anomalies d'oxygèen-17 (Δ17O) et les « clumped isotopes » (Δ47, Δ48), en complément des mesures traditionnelles de δ13C et δ18O. En travaillant à partir d'échantillons modernes dont les conditions de croissance sont bien documentées, les contraintes supplémentaires fournies par ces traceurs permettent de mieux caractériser les facteurs qui influençent la composition isotopique des biocarbonates.Ce travail a commencé par une première étape exploratoire, visant d'une part (1) à identifier les organismes / cas d'étude à cibler en priorité, en associant des mesures isotopiques à faible résolution spatiale avec des observations in situ fournissant des informations minéralogiques, élémentaires et isotopiques à bien plus haute résolution, et d'autre part (2) à établir des protocoles expérimentaux optimisés pour les techniques instrumentales de pointe utilisées pour les mesures de Δ47/Δ48 (par spectrométrie de masse à très haute sensibilité) et de Δ17O (par VCOF-CRDS, une technologie spectroscopique innovante). Le premier volet de ce travail a donné lieu à la première l'étude publiée sur les clumped isotopes dans les squelettes de bryozoaires. Les résultats mettent en évidence une forte influence de la minéralogie sur le signal Δ47, qui semble résulter d'un simple effet thermodynamique. Par contre, il apparaît que les organismes de certains sites présentent des déséquilibres isotopiques spécifiques, potentiellement associés à la salinité locale. Ces résultats suscitent de nouvelles interrogations sur l'influence de certains paramètres environnementaux sur l'activité de certaines enzymes, en particulier l'anhydrase carbonique qui joue un rôle majeur dans le maintien de l'équilibre isotopique entre l'eau et le carbone inorganique dissous (CID). Le second volet porte sur la caractérisation, chez les coraux d'eau froide, des écarts à l'équilibre dans cinq dimensions isotopique (δ13C, δ18O, Δ17O, Δ47, Δ48), observées ici conjointement pour la première fois. Les observations sur Δ47 et Δ48 sont en accord avec une publication indépendante récente, et cohérentes avec un modèle théorique du CID, suggérant que la signature isotopique des coraux profonds est principalement contrôlée par des effets cinétiques liés à l'absorption du CO₂ métabolique. Cependant, les prédictions de ce même modèle sont en désaccord avec nos mesures de Δ17O (qui ont été depuis confirmées par des observations indépendantes), soulignant la nécessité de réviser certains paramètres du modèle. La richesse des questions nouvelles suscitées par ce travail de thèse illustre l'intérêt de combiner les observations dans un espace multi-isotopique à 5 dimensions avec des modèles théoriques quantitatifs, tout en confrontant ces modèles aux spécificités biologiques de chaque organisme marin, permettant tout à la fois de mieux comprendre les mécanismes de biominéralisation et de quantifier l'influence des effets vitaux dans les biocarbonates sur les paléo-reconstructions<br>Biocarbonates produced by marine organisms such as foraminifera or corals serve as important archives for studying past environments and climates. However, this relationship, supposedly based on the thermodynamic equilibrium between carbonate and water, can be disturbed by either environmental parameters or biological mechanisms. In certain organisms, such as corals, these "vital effects" manifest as significant isotopic disequilibrium, complicating the interpretation of a substantial portion of the fossil sedimentary record.In response to these challenges, this thesis adopts an innovative approach by leveraging new isotopic tracers, namely oxygen-17 anomalies (Δ17O) and "clumped isotopes" (Δ47, Δ48), in addition to traditional δ13C and δ18O measurements. By working with modern samples for which growth conditions are well documented, the additional constraints provided by these tracers allow for a better characterization of the factors influencing the isotopic composition of biocarbonates.This work began with an exploratory phase, aimed at (1) identifying the organisms/case studies by combining low spatial resolution isotopic measurements with in situ observations that provide mineralogical, elemental, and isotopic information at much higher resolution, and (2) establishing optimized experimental protocols for cutting-edge instrumental techniques used for Δ47/Δ48 measurements (via ultra-high sensitivity mass spectrometry) and Δ17O (via VCOF-CRDS, an innovative spectroscopic technology).The first part of this work resulted in the first published study on clumped isotopes in bryozoan skeletons. The results highlight a strong influence of mineralogy on the Δ47 signal, which seems to result from a simple thermodynamic effect. However, it appears that organisms from certain sites exhibit specific isotopic disequilibrium, potentially linked to local salinity. These findings raise new questions about the influence of certain environmental parameters on the activity of specific enzymes, particularly carbonic anhydrase, which plays a key role in maintaining isotopic equilibrium between water and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC).The second part focuses on characterizing isotopic disequilibria in five isotopic dimensions (δ13C, δ18O, Δ17O, Δ47, Δ48) in cold-water corals, observed together here for the first time. The observations on Δ47 and Δ48 are consistent with a recent independent publication and align with a theoretical DIC model, suggesting that the isotopic signature of deep-sea corals is primarily controlled by kinetic effects related to the absorption of metabolic CO₂. However, the predictions of this same model are at odds with our Δ17O measurements (which have since been confirmed by independent observations), underscoring the need to revise certain model parameters.The richness of new questions raised by this thesis highlights the value of combining observations in a five-dimensional multi-isotopic space with quantitative theoretical models, while confronting these models with the biological specifics of each marine organism. This approach enables a deeper understanding of biomineralization mechanisms and allows for a more precise quantification of the influence of vital effects in biocarbonates on paleo-reconstructions

De nombreux écosystèmes forestiers français sont développés sur des sols acides et pauvres en éléments nutritifs. Dans de nombreux contextes, la fertilité minérale de ces sols forestiers se dégrade lentement, en lien notamment avec des pressions extérieures passées ou actuelles (e.g. diminution des apports atmosphériques de nutriments, augmentation des exportations de biomasse). Ce constat préoccupe la communauté forestière et des solutions de restauration/remédiation sont souvent envisagées. L’amendement avec un produit carbonaté est une pratique connue pour réduire l'acidité du sol, améliorer le fonctionnement global de l'écosystème et compenser les pertes de nutriments causées par la récolte de biomasse. Cependant, les effets de l’amendement sur les processus et le cycle biogéochimique du calcium et magnésium dans les écosystèmes forestiers sont peu connus à ce jour. Cette étude se focalise sur le devenir du magnésium et du calcium provenant de la dissolution des produits d’amendement dans cinq hêtraies situées dans le nord de la France sur une période allant jusqu’à 45 ans après l’apport. Pour cela, les approches élémentaires « conventionnelles » ont été combinées avec une approche multi-isotopique (26/24Mg, 44/40Ca et 87/86Sr). Les données provenant des parcelles témoins mesurées tout au long de la période d'étude suggèrent, quel que soit le site considéré, que les pools échangeables de cations nutritifs dans le sol ont diminué sur les dernières décennies et que cette tendance, associée à la faible richesse chimique du sol, se reflète dans la nutrition foliaire (Ca, Mg, K, P). En comparaison des placettes témoins, les pools échangeables de Mg et de Ca dans l’horizon 0-40 cm du sol ont augmenté dans les placettes amendées durant la première décennie après l’amendement, mais les différences s’estompent après 20 à 30 ans. Cependant, l'effet de l’amendement sur la nutrition des arbres est encore observé 40 ans après l’apport, très probablement parce que le cycle biologique de ces éléments a été dynamisé par l’amendement. La réponse des écosystèmes à l’amendement varie d'un site à l'autre, en fonction de la nature du produit (CaCO3 ou Ca-MgCO3) et du niveau de richesse chimique initial du sol, les sites les plus pauvres chimiquement enregistrant les réponses les plus marquées. Les variations naturelles des rapports isotopiques du Mg, Ca et Sr, en complément des approches conventionnelles, mettent en évidence l’importance de la composante Bio des cycles biogéochimiques du Ca et Mg dans ces hêtraies à faible fertilité minérale. Ces outils isotopiques ont également permis de démontrer l'incorporation durable de Ca et Mg issus des produits d’amendement dans leur cycle biologique respectif et de mettre en évidence des modifications de fonctionnement biogéochimique des écosystèmes suite à l’amendement<br>In France, many forest ecosystems grow on acidic and nutrient poor soils. In numerous cases, the chemical fertility of forest soils is slowly degrading due to increasing external pressures (e.g. decreasing atmospheric inputs, increasing biomass exportations) and is a growing concern in the international forest community. Forest management often must resort to restauration/remediation practices to ensure the sustainability of the ecosystem. Forest liming with a carbonate product is a known practice to reduce soil acidity, globally improve the ecosystem functioning and compensate nutrient losses caused by biomass harvest and exportation. However, our understanding of the effects of liming on magnesium and calcium biogeochemical processes and cycling in forest ecosystems is still incomplete. This study focuses on the fate of magnesium and calcium originating from the dissolution of liming products in the soils and trees of five beech forests located in Northern France over a period up to 45 years. In order to do so, “conventional” total-element approaches were combined with a multi-isotopic approach (26/24Mg, 44/40Ca et 87/86Sr). At all five sites, the data measured in control plots throughout the study period suggest that the exchangeable pools of nutrient cations in the soil has decreased over the last several decades and that this trend, together with the low chemical fertility level of the soil, was reflected in foliar nutrition (Ca, Mg, K, P). Compared to the control plots, soil exchangeable pools of Mg and Ca in the 0-40cm layer in the limed plots increased during the first decade after liming but differences were no longer observable in soil pools after 20 to 30 years. However, the effect of liming on tree nutrition was still observed after 40 years, most probably because the biological cycling of these elements was enhanced by the lime input. The ecosystem response to the lime input varied between sites depending on the nature of the liming product (CaCO3 or Ca-MgCO3) and the initial chemical fertility level of the soil, the poorest sites showing the strongest responses. The natural variations of Mg, Ca and Sr isotopic ratios combined with conventional approaches highlight the importance of the BIO component of the biogeochemical cycling of Mg and Ca in the studied low chemical fertility beech forests. These isotopic tools also enabled to show the long-lasting incorporation of the Mg and Ca released from the liming product in the biological cycle and highlight the changes in the biogeochemical functioning of these forest ecosystems after the liming operation

The structural properties of the very neutron deficient systems around N~Z~40 have been studied in two experiments performed at the GANIL and Legnaro laboratories. The fragmentation of a 60 MeV/u92 Mo beam on a natural nickel target at the GANIL Laboratory, France, produced exotic nuclei along the proton drip line in the mass 80 region. Isomeric decays have been observed for the first time in the N=Z+2 systems 74 36Kr, 80 39Y and 84 41Nb. The isomer in 74 Kr is interpreted as the hindered decay from an excited 0+ state, supporting the long-standing prediction of prolate/oblate shape coexistence in this nucleus. Transitions from states below an isomer in the N=Z nucleus 86 43Tc have also been tentatively identified, making this the heaviest N=Z system for which gamma-ray decays from excited states have been observed. Conclusive evidence for the existence of the Z=N+1 isotopes 77 39Y, 79 40Zr and 83 42Mo has also been obtained together with upper limits on the particle decay lifetimes of the odd-proton systems 81 41 Nb and 85 43Tc. The reported instability of the lighter odd-Z, Tz = -1/2 systems 69Br and 73Rb makes the observed existence for 77 39Y particularly interesting. A possible explanation for the relative particle stability of 77 39Y is given in terms of the shape polarising effect of the N=Z=38 prolate shell gap on the nuclear mean field and the increased centrifugal barrier associated with the occupation of a g9/2 proton orbital. The second experiment was performed to further investigate the oblate nature of the isomeric state in 74Kr. The reaction 40Ca(40Ca, alpha2p)74Kr was used at a beam energy of 135 MeV obtained from the Tandem XTU accelerator. The EUROBALL gamma-ray array was used in conjunction with the ISIS charged particle silicon ball to study the states above and below the isomer. The ISIS ball was used to highlight channel selection of non-yrast states by particle gating. No evidence for the 0+2 isomer in 74Kr was observed in this work.

Les dynamiques du strontium (sr) et du calcium (ca) ont été étudiées dans différents écosystèmes forestiers sur sol acide et calcaire, afin d'évaluer dans quelle mesure le sr pouvait être utilisé comme un traceur du ca. Nos résultats ont confirmé l'analogie générale entre sr et ca mais ils montrent un transfert préférentiel du ca par rapport au sr vers les feuilles (conduisant à une accumulation préférentielle de ca à la surface du sol via les chutes de feuilles) et suggèrent sur sol acide un prélèvement racinaire préférentiel de ca par rapport au sr. La dynamique des éléments minéraux a été évaluée dans trois écosystèmes forestiers sous climat tropical, boréal et tempéré à partir de la mesure des flux et variations isotopiques du sr dans les arbres et les sols et à l'aide d'un modèle à compartiments et à flux. En Guyane, nous avons mis en évidence le rôle quasi négligeable joué par les racines profondes des arbres dans l'alimentation minérale de la forêt Tropicale humide. Au nord de la Suède, les différences isotopiques observées dans les organes de pins et épicéas croissant en mélange suggèrent d'une part, un prélèvement et un recyclage biologique du sr beaucoup plus fort par l'épicéa, et d'autre part une altération rhizosphérique plus forte par les racines d'épicéa. Les mesures ont par ailleurs confirmé un prélèvement minéral et hydrique plus profond par le pin. Dans les Vosges, la diminution du rapport 8 7sr/ 8 6sr mesurée dans les cernes d'épicéas au cours du temps a été interprétée comme le résultat d'une acidification à long terme des sols de ce peuplement, éventuellement associée à une remontée des racines. Ces mécanismes paraissent être responsables de l'augmentation du stress hydrique subi par le peuplement.

Triple oxygen and hydrogen isotope analysis of the structurally-bound water in gypsum can provide a direct measure of past hydrologic variability. This thesis presents the development of the water extraction and isotopic measurement procedures, the calculation of the gypsum-water isotope fractionation factors, and the application of the method to constrain the palaeohydrologic conditions in two temporally and geographically disparate sites. Measurement of the isotopic composition of gypsum hydration water is used to examine the hydrological changes that occurred during the Terminal Classic Drought of the Maya lowlands (~800-1000 CE), coincident with the period when the Classic Maya Civilization of Mesoamerica collapsed. The data provide a complete and direct archive of hydrological conditions that have previously been limited to ice core records. Mean annual rainfall is shown to have decreased by between 41% and 54%, with intervals of up to 70%, compared to present-day conditions. This study has also shown for the first time that relative humidity was 2%-7% lower during the Terminal Classic Drought compared to today. The methodology is also applied to the massive gypsum deposits in the marginal and deep basins of the Mediterranean to interpret the chemical evolution of parent water bodies during the Messinian Salinity Crisis (5.97-5.3 Ma). By combining the measurement of gypsum hydration water with other traditional (e.g. strontium) and novel (e.g. calcium and barium) isotope tracers, the hydrological changes during the deposition of Primary Lower Gypsum units of the Sorbas Basin in southeastern Spain, the Upper Gypsum units of Sicily, and deep basin deposits have been constrained. The results indicate that all deposits experienced a significant freshwater contribution to the mother fluids from which they formed. It is proposed that obliquity-controlled sea level and eccentricity-modulated precession, superimposed on longer-term tectonic restriction of the Mediterranean-Atlantic exchange, together controlled the varying depositional environments during the formation of the Messinian Salt Giant. This thesis demonstrates that the analysis of gypsum hydration water is a powerful tool for palaeoclimate reconstruction. The methodology can be applied to gypsum (and other hydrated minerals) in a wide range of settings across geological space and time, providing a rich source of information about the environmental conditions under which they formed.

The field of noble gas mass spectrometry is a rapidly developing one. There is a sustained requirement for continuous development of instrumentation in order to allow researchers to answer critical questions facing their respective fields. Within planetary science, the question of whether our solar system is 'typical', has been a driving force behind many lines of research. This project sought to build upon the strong instrumental base of the Isotope Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry group of the University of Manchester, in order to develop the Resonance Ionisation Mass Spectrometer for Krypton Isotopes. From that basis, it then sought to develop techniques and protocols for the analysis of extra-terrestrial samples, particularly those of very low mass. The thesis is broken down into three studies. The first involved the development of the mechanisms used to fill the Xe-Ar four-wave mixing cell. This section covers the development, implementation, and characterisation of the newly installed mass flow controllers. The additional control over the mixing ratio granted allowed an eightfold increase to the sensitivity of the instrument. The reproducibility of the gas ratio is consistently shown throughout, and has ultimately reduced the tuning time of the instrument from a number of weeks to a day. The second section details the required procedures involved in data reduction, and the development of protocols and software for the RIMSKI instrument. A range of approaches are assessed, including a novel approach to cosmic ray exposure age calculations. The methods are discussed and implemented on extra-terrestrial samples, the Stannern eucrite and the Bereba eucrite. Finally, the analytical limits of the RIMSKI instrument are expanded via the measurement of the krypton systems of individual calcium-aluminium-rich inclusions. It is observed that Allende CAIs show a trapped component, Br-derived Kr, as well as an anomalous 'heavy Kr' component (one that is enriched in 86Kr). It is additionally noted that there is a lack of cosmogenic krypton to be found in all but one of the measured inclusions. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Des mesures des compositions isotopiques de bore, de carbone et d'oxygène par sonde ionique ont été développées sur des carbonates avec des reproductibilités internes de l'ordre 0,2 ‰ et des reproductibilités externes de l'ordre de 0,9 ‰ pour le bore, 0,65 ‰ pour le carbone et 0,4 ‰ pour l'oxygène. Les volumes analysés sont compris entre 3,5. 10-7 et 58,9. 1 0-7 mm³. Les coraux fournissent un enregistrement des conditions chimiques et physiques de l'eau de mer environnante au moment de la précipitation de leur squelette carbonaté. Leurs δ¹³C et δ¹⁸0 apparaissent en déséquilibre par rapport aux fractionnements isotopiques entre l'aragonite inorganique et l'eau. Cet écart est appelé effet "vital". Les mécanismes actuellement proposés pour expliquer cet effet "vital" sont, pour l'oxygène, une variation de pH dans le fluide de calcification (Adkins, 2000) ou un effet cinétique lors de la précipitation de l'aragonite du squelette (McConnaughey, 1989), et pour le carbone, un effet cinétique ou une forte contribution de C02 métabolique venant de la respiration du corail qui est appauvri en ¹³C. Les résultats pour les compositions isotopiques de bore, carbone et d'oxygène à l'échelle micrométrique ont plusieurs implications. Le déséquilibre des mesures de 8¹³C reflète sans doute le mélange des deux sources dont provient le CID (Carbone Inorganique Dissous) : le C02 métabolique issu de la respiration du corail et le CID venant directement de l'eau de mer. Les compositions chimiques et isotopiques traces des métaux de traces dans la calcite sont à la base de la plupart des reconstructions de températures passées, de CO2 atmosphérique et de pH océanique. Les compositions isotopiques des métaux divalents incorporées dans la structure de calcite ont également la capacité d'enregistrer des informations précieuses reflétant les conditions géochimiques de la formation. (Galy et al., 2002; Chang et al., 2004; Beard et al., 2012; Mavromatis et al., 2013; Fantle and Tipper, 2014; Mavromatis et al., 2015; Mavromatis et al., 2019). De plus, comme la répartition à l'équilibre et la cinétique des métaux divalents entre la calcite et le fluide présentent des comportements contrastés, on peut s'attendre à ce que leur composition isotopique dans la calcite présente des tendances distinctes (Schott et al., 2014). Comme la spéciation aqueuse de Ni dépend fortement du pH et de l'alcalinité, la composition isotopique de Ni adsorbée à la surface de la calcite et / ou incorporée dans le réseau de calcite pourrait fournir des informations précieuses sur l'environnement chimique dans lequel ce minéral s'est formé à l'origine. Pour calibrer cet outil potentiellement utile, des expériences ont été effectuées à 25° C pour déterminer le fractionnement isotopique du Ni pendant 1) l'adsorption de Ni à la surface de la calcite en fonction du pH de la solution (de 7,5 à 8,7) et 2) la coprécipitation de Ni avec de la calcite à pH 6,2, pCO2 = 1 atm en fonction de taux de croissance de la calcite allant de 10-8,2 à 10-7,3 mol m-2 s-1. Les résultats montrent que le facteur de fractionnement à l'équilibre, solution Δ60Nisolid-solution, pour l'adsorption de Ni sur la calcite est égal à -0,49 ± 0,16 et indépendant du pH. Les isotopes de Ni léger sont également incorporés de manière préférentielle dans la calcite pendant sa coprécipitation. The isotope compositions of divalent metals incorporated into the calcite structure also have the ability to record valuable information that reflects the geochemical conditions of formation (Galy et al., 2002; Chang et al., 2004; Beard et al., 2012; Mavromatis et al., 2013; Fantle and Tipper, 2014; Mavromatis et al., 2015; Mavromatis et al., 2019). Moreover, as the equilibrium and kinetic partition of divalent metals between calcite and fluid exhibit contrasting behaviors, it can be expected that their isotope composition in calcite exhibits distinct trends (Schott et al., 2014). Because Ni aqueous speciation strongly depends on fluid pH and alkalinity, the isotopic composition of Ni adsorbed on calcite surface and/or incorporated into the calcite lattice could provide information on the chemical environment in which this mineral originally formed. To calibrate this potentially useful tool, experiments were performed at 25°C to determine Ni isotope fractionation during 1) Ni adsorption on calcite surface as a function of solution pH (from 7.5 to 8.7) and 2) Ni coprecipitation with calcite at pH = 6.2, pCO2 = 1 atm as a function of calcite growth rates (ranging from 10-8.2 to 10-7.3 mol m-2 s-1). Results show that the equilibrium fractionation factor, Δ60Nisolid-solution, for Ni adsorption on calcite is equal to -0.49 ± 0.16‰ and is pH - independent. Light Ni isotopes are also preferentially incorporated in calcite during its coprecipitation. Ainsi, les carbonates sont susceptibles d'enregistrer la composition isotopique de Mg de l'océan lors de leur précipitation. Cependant, il est nécessaire de comprendre les facteurs environnementaux (e.g. température, pH, Mg/Ca de la solution) qui peuvent contrôler ces compositions. Le premier objectif de cette thèse a donc été de déterminer les paramètres pouvant impacter les compositions isotopiques de Mg des carbonates par des précipitations expérimentales en conditions contrôlées. Il a ainsi été mis en évidence, dans les gammes considérées, mais qui restent restreintes, l'absence de contrôle de la température, du pH et du Mg/Ca de la solution sur le fractionnement isotopique du Mg lors de la précipitation des carbonates. Le fractionnement isotopique du Mg entre la solution et la calcite, à l'équilibre, a été évalué à -2,13 ± 0,24 pour mille (2sigma) à partir de cette étude, combinée à des données de la littérature. Ces résultats ont ensuite été appliqués à l'étude des compositions isotopiques de Mg dans des coquilles de brachiopodes à la fois modernes et anciens. Pour cela, une quantification des effets vitaux vis-à-vis des isotopes du Mg lors de la croissance du brachiopodes a été réalisée. Ainsi, les zones en équilibre isotopique pour Mg, O et C et donc susceptibles d'être utilisables lors des reconstructions paléoenvironnementales sont situées au sein de la calcite interne sur les bords de la coquille. Therefore, the first goal of this thesis was to determine parameters impacting carbonate Mg isotopic composition with experimental precipitations under controlled conditions. Thus, it has been shown, in restricted ranges, that temperature, pH and solution Mg/Ca have no influence on Mg isotopic fractionation during calcite precipitation. Equilibrium Mg isotopic fractionation between solution and calcite has been evaluated to -2.13 ± 0.24 per thousand (2sigma) from this study, combined with published data. These results were then applied to a study of Mg isotopic compositions in modern and past brachiopod shells. For this, a quantification of vital effects with respect to Mg isotopes during the brachiopod growth was realized. Carbon and oxygen isotopes in calcite crystals provide a record of the environmental conditions under which the crystals formed. To investigate the influence of temperature, pH, and growth rate on isotope discrimination by calcite, we measured carbon and oxygen isotope fractionation through a series of calcite precipitation experiments at T = 25C and pH = 7.5 - 9.3. We observe that neither the carbon nor oxygen isotope compositions correspond to the theoretical equilibrium isotope fractionation between calcite and solution. We also demonstrate that the fractionation of oxygen isotopes between calcite and water decreases with increasing pH, consistent with available data from experiments in which the enzyme carbonic anhydrase was used. Finally, we compare the carbon and oxygen isotopes of our calcite crystals to those of biogenic carbonates.

Pour pouvoir contraindre et comprendre les processus qui se sont produits dans l'Himalaya et qui ont affecté ces cycles, nous devons être distinguer les signatures de l'altération du silicate et du carbonate dans la charge dissoute des fleuves de l'Himalaya. Des études antérieures ont tenté de le faire en utilisant diverses méthodes mais il n’existe toujours pas de consensus clair sur l’ampleur et le flux de l’altération du silicate dans l’Himalaya. Cette thèse propose l'utilisation du 40Ca comme traceur pouvant améliorer la quantification du flux d'altération du silicate et du carbonate dans la charge dissoute des rivières himalayennes. Des travaux antérieurs ont montré que le budget de l'eau de mer 40Ca est dominé par une source de manteau, de sorte que les carbonates marins ont une signature homogène de 40Ca indiscernable par rapport à la valeur du manteau. En revanche, la croûte supérieure de silicate devrait avoir développé une composition radiogénique. La différence entre la signature en Ca radiogénique des lithologies de carbonate et de silicate peut donc être utilisée pour différencier l’altération du carbonate et du silicate dans la charge dissoute des rivières. Nous présentons ici une étude géochimique comprenant des analyses de Ca radiogénique des rivières drainant les principales unités lithologiques de l'Himalaya, ainsi que des résultats provenant de sédiments, de substrat rocheux, de sol et de gravier. Nos résultats montrent que les carbonates de l’Himalaya ne présentent pas d’excès de 40Ca radiogénique malgré des signatures très variables 87Sr/86Sr, alors que les sédiments sont radiogènes (+0.9 à +4). Ceci suggère que pour Ca, contrairement à Sr, l'échange isotopique entre les lithologies silicate et carbonate a été minime. La composition en Ca radiogène de l'eau des rivières va de +0.1 dans les captages à prédominance carbonatée à +11 dans les rivières drainant des bassins versants silicatés. Pour les grandes rivières, les estimations du budget relatives à l’altération du silicate et du carbonate sur la base des éléments principaux et la composition en Ca radiogénique tendent à concorder. Cependant, pour certaines rivières plus petites, en particulier celles drainant des bassins à dominance silicatée dans les formations cristallines de HHC et du LH, certaines divergences sont observées. Celles-ci ne peuvent pas être attribuées à une définition imprécise de la composition chimique ou radiogénique en Ca des pôles de mélange utilisés pour la modélisation budgétaire, car les valeurs requises pour résoudre le modèle ne sont pas raisonnables. Ils ne peuvent pas non plus être expliqués par la précipitation de carbonates secondaires dans les rivières car la composition non radiogénique de carbonates suggère que ce processus n'est que mineur. Au contraire, ces différences peuvent être dues à la dissolution des traces de calcite radiogénique contenues dans les lithologies de silicate HHC et LH. Le vieillissement de ce matériau, qui ne représente qu'une infime partie de la surface du captage du silicate, pourrait produire une proportion substantielle du Ca radiogénique et pourrait ainsi avoir une influence significative sur le calcul des budgets de ces bassins à partir des données isotopiques. Néanmoins, comme cet effet est observé principalement dans les bassins à faible taux d’érosion des silicates, son influence sur les estimations du flux global de vieillissement du silicate sera mineure. Plus généralement, les résultats de cette thèse impliquent que le système 40Ca permet une résolution de problématiques qui ne peuvent pas être approfondies avec succès à l'aide d'isotopes Sr dans l'Himalaya. Des travaux supplémentaires sont nécessaires pour définir la gamme complète des compositions de Ca radiogénique dans l’Himalaya afin de répondre clairement aux questions concernant les flux d’altération des silicates<br>Weathering of Himalayan lithologies has had a potential impact on the global carbon cycle. To be able to constrain and understand the processes that occurred in the Himalayas that affected these cycles, we must be able to distinguish the signatures of silicate and carbonate weathering in the dissolved load of Himalayan rivers. Previous studies have attempted to do this using a variety of methods but there is still not a clear consensus on the magnitude and flux of silicate weathering in the Himalaya. This thesis proposes the use of 40Ca as a tracer that could improve the quantification of the silicate and carbonate weathering flux in the dissolved load of Himalayan rivers. Previous work has shown that the 40Ca budget of seawater is dominated by a mantle source, such that marine carbonates have a homogeneous 40Ca signature indistinguishable from the mantle value. In contrast, the upper silicate crust is expected to have developed a radiogenic composition. The difference between the radiogenic Ca signature of carbonate and silicate lithologies can be therefore used to differentiate between carbonate and silicate weathering in the dissolved load of rivers. Here, we present a geochemical survey, including radiogenic Ca analyses, of rivers draining the main lithological units of the Himalaya, as well as results from sediments, bedrock, soil and gravel. Our results show that Himalayan carbonates exhibit no radiogenic 40Ca excesses despite highly variable 87Sr/86Sr signatures, whereas sediments are variably radiogenic (+0.9 to +4). This suggests that for Ca, unlike for Sr, isotopic exchange between the silicate and carbonate lithologies has been minimal. The radiogenic Ca composition of river water ranges from +0.1 in carbonate dominated catchments to +11 in rivers draining silicate catchments. For large rivers, silicate and carbonate weathering budget estimates based on major elements and radiogenic Ca compositions tend to agree. However, for some smaller rivers, especially those draining silicate dominated basins in the HHC and LH formations, some discrepancies are observed. These cannot be attributed to poor definition of the chemical or radiogenic Ca composition of the endmembers used for budget modeling, as the values required to bring the estimates into agreement are unreasonable. They also cannot be explained by precipitation of secondary carbonates in the rivers as the non-radiogenic composition of the carbonate fraction of sediments suggests that this process is only minor. Rather, these discrepancies may be due to the dissolution/weathering of trace amounts of radiogenic calcite contained within HHC and LH silicate lithologies. The weathering of such material, which represents only a tiny fraction of the area of the silicate catchment, could yield a substantial proportion of the radiogenic Ca and may thus have a significant influence on the isotopically based weathering budgets of these basins. Nevertheless, as this effect is observed primarily in basins with low silicate erosion rates, its influence on estimates of the overall silicate weathering flux will be minor. More generally, the results of this thesis imply that the 40K–40Ca system can resolve issues that cannot be successfully addressed using Sr isotopes in the Himalaya. Further work is needed to define the full range of radiogenic Ca compositions in the Himalaya in order to clearly answer questions regarding silicate weathering fluxes

Dans ce travail, nous avons appliqué les méthodes de calcul électronique basés sur la théorie de la fonctionnelle de la densité pour calculer les propriétés de partage isotopique à l'équilibre de l'hydrogène, de l'oxygène et du silicium entre divers matériaux d'intérêt en sciences de la Terre. La compréhension de ces mécanismes de partage est un enjeu majeur en géochimie, car le contenu isotopique des minéraux constitue un témoin des événements géochimiques. Le calcul électronique permet de déterminer les propriétés vibrationnelles complètes d'un matériau au niveau harmonique,<br />desquelles on déduit ses propriétés de partage. Notre but est de valider une approche ab initio, i.e. libre de tout paramètre issu de l'expérience, permettant la prédiction du partage entre deux matériaux. On s'est intéressé aux matériaux: quartz, vapeur d'eau, glace, kaolinite, lizardite, enstatite, forstérite, brucite et gibbsite. Certains ont fait l'objet d'études expérimentales précises de leurs différentes propriétés physiques, ce qui nous permet de valider notre approche, et tous sont de grand intérêt en sciences de la Terre, ce qui nous permet de proposer de nouvelles lois de partage en fonction de la température, et de vérifier la validité de celles déjà proposées. C'est la première fois qu'une telle étude systématique est réalisée à partir d'une approche ab initio, et sur autant de systèmes différents. On a donc procédé à une étude la plus complète possible des sources d'erreur susceptibles d'influencer le résultat final. Par ailleurs, cette approche nous permet d'analyser de façon plus détaillée les processus physiques à l'origine du partage isotopique dans ces différents matériaux.

Calcified skeletons are produced within complex assemblages of proteins and polysaccharides whose roles in mineralization are not well understood. Researchers have long postulated that living organisms utilize the macromolecules of organic matrices to actively guide the formation of crystal structures. The timing and placement of the subsequent minerals that form are most easily controlled during nucleation; however, a physical and chemical picture of how organic functional group chemistry influences the initial stages of nucleation is not yet established. These processes are further complicated by the realization that carbonate biominerals can form by an amorphous to crystalline transformation process, which has prompted the question of how chemical signatures are recorded during mineralization. Investigations of mineralization processes such as the kinetics of nucleation and the transformation of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) to crystalline products are critical to building a better understanding of biomineral formation. Only from that fundamental basis can one begin to decipher changes in climate and seawater chemistry over geologic time and by recent anthropogenic effects.
This dissertation presents the findings from experimental studies of the thermodynamics and kinetics of multiple mineral formation processes, including nucleation and transformation from an amorphous phase. The kinetics of calcite nucleation onto a suite of high-purity polysaccharide (PS) substrates were quantified under controlled conditions. Nucleation rates were measured as a function of 1) supersaturation extending above and below ACC solubility and 2) ionic strength extending to seawater salinity. These conditions decipher the chemical interactions between the PS substrate, calcite crystal, and solution. These investigations show the energy barrier to calcite formation is regulated by competing interfacial energies between the substrate, crystal, and liquid. The energy barriers to nucleation are PS-specific by a systematic relationship to PS charge density and substrate structure that is rooted in minimization of the competing substrate-crystal and substrate-liquid interfacial energies. The data also suggest ionic strength regulates nucleation barriers through substrate-liquid and crystal-liquid interfacial energetics.
In a second experimental study, stable isotope labeling was used to directly probe the transformation pathway. Four processes were considered: dissolution-reprecipitation, solid-state, or combinations of these end member processes. Isotope measurements of calcite crystals that transform from ACC have signatures that are best explained by dissolution-reprecipitation. The extent of isotopic mixing correlates with the amount of ACC transferred and the time to transformation, suggesting the calcite crystals are recording the changing local solution environment during the transformation. These investigations into different mineralization mechanisms build a framework for how functional group chemistries of organic molecules regulate mineralization and the resulting isotopic and elemental signatures in the calcite. This may provide useful insights to interpreting chemical signatures of carbonate biominerals in fossil record and understanding ocean chemistry changes throughout geologic time.<br>Ph. D.

Dans ce travail, le code Monte Carlo PENELOPE a été utilisé pour simuler la trajectoire des particules jusqu'à des énergies incidentes de 100 eV. Une étude préliminaire a permis de valider l'utilisation du code pour le calcul de distributions de doses absorbées autour de sources ponctuelles et volumiques dans l'eau. Cette étude a été complétée en déterminant l'équivalence ou non du gel MAGIC à l'eau, les tissus mous et adipeux, le muscle, la thyroïde et le cartilage en comparant les sections efficaces et les grandeurs physiques d'interaction (pouvoir d'arrêt, coefficient d'atténuation. . . ) relatives à ces milieux. L'ensemble de ces résultats a permis l'adaptation du code PENELOPE pour la modélisation de différentes configurations d'irradiation source/cible décrivant les principaux cas cliniques en radiothérapie interne vectorisée<br>This work is meant for improving dosimetry in internal targeted radiotherapy by using MAGIC polymer gels. The Monte Carlo PENELOPE code was used to simulate the trajectory of particles down to an incident energy of 100 eV. In a preliminary study the code was validated by calculating the absorbed-dose distributions around point sources and volume ones in liquid water. This study was completed by estimating the equivalences or non-equivalences of the MAGIC gel to water, soft and adipose tissues, muscle, thyroid and cartilage. For this purpose, cross sections and physical interaction quantities (stopping power, attenuation coefficient. . . ) concerning these media are compared. The overall result set allowed us to adapt the PENELOPE code for modelling different irradiation configurations of source/target which describe the main clinical treatments in internal targeted radiotherapy

This thesis focuses on the geochemistry of secondary minerals, mainly calcite but also others such as fluorite and Ca/Al silicates, precipitated throughout the last 1.5 billion years in fractures of crystalline rock, SE Sweden. The work was based on previous reconnaissance studies and has been possible thanks to access to high-quality drill cores and associated mapping data provided by the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Co (SKB). Concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) and occasionally other metals were determined in a variety of secondary minerals from fractures (mainly open systems) and veins (mainly sealed systems) and in primary minerals from the bedrock. Stable-isotope composition was measured in the secondary minerals. The overall aim was to define the sources, uptake and fractionation of REEs in calcite, and a few other co-genetic minerals, precipitated throughout the geological history under conditions ranging from hydrothermal to low temperatures. Collectively, the findings of the individual studies show that there is no easy and straightforward control of REE abundance and fractionation in calcite and other minerals in fractures and veins in crystalline bedrock settings. For example, the REE features in calcite vary extensively within sub-generations of single vein-precipitating events, on micro scale in transects across individual veins, and unsystematically over the geological history characterised by successively decreasing temperatures of mineral formation. Although the REE content in, and release from, the crystalline bedrock can have an influence on REE distribution in calcite and other minerals, it is of overall minor importance within a given bedrock domain. The main advantage of determining REEs in secondary minerals in fractures and veins in crystalline rock is therefore, as revealed in this work, to assess the character and evolution of the conditions (including features of the paleofluids) during confined mineral-precipitating events.
