Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to introduce and develop the methodology of journal benchmarking. Design/methodology/approach – The journal benchmarking method is understood to be an analytic procedure of continuous monitoring and comparing of the advance of specific journal(s) against that of competing journals in the same subject area, together with the application of best practices defined in order to improve a journal's own advance and gain a position among leading scientific journals. Findings – As a realization of this method, it is suggested to build up a journal scoreboard, which is a matrix of journal indicators, distributed for different journals. For the journal scoreboard on the subject of lasers and optics (36 journals, five indicators) a series of regression equations was built up that allow forecasts to be made for journals’ impact factor levels, depending on the International Collaboration and Reference per Document indicators included in the SCIMAGO database. Practical implications – The detailed journal scoreboard and prediction calculations allow elaborating strategies and policies for the promotion of journals in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Originality/value – The research presents the building up of a journal scoreboard in combination with prediction calculations that can be helpful for improving journal positioning in international Scientometric databases.

BackgroundWe examined citation data for the British Journal of Psychiatry (BJP) and four other general psychiatry journals to assess their impact on the scientific community.MethodData on three measures of citations (total number of citations, impact factor and ranking by impact factor) were obtained from Journal Citation Reports for 1985–1994. Rank correlations from year to year were calculated.ResultsThe BJP currently ranks sixth of all psychiatry journals when journals are ranked by impact factor. The journal's impact factor fell between 1985 and 1990 and this was followed by a rise in impact factor after 1991. The BJP did not rank in the top 10 psychiatry journals between 1991 and 1993. Archives of General Psychiatry is cited more frequently than any other psychiatry journal, with the American Journal of Psychiatry usually ranking second. Psychopharmacology journals are replacing more general journals in the top rankings. Rankings of most journals have become less stable in recent years.ConclusionsThe BJP would have to change the nature and number of papers published to improve its impact factor. There are a number of limitations to citation data and such data are only one of several factors useful in evaluating the importance of a journal's contribution to scientific and clinical communities.Conflict of interestThese condauthor is Editor of the British Journal of Psychiatry.

Scientific journals are publication media that contain articles that present the results of research and scientific studies. Management of journals by departments at universities is essential in improving the quality and reputation of departments, especially in supporting the implementation of tridharma in research. Based on the results of observations, the management of the Jeumpa Journal carried out by the Department of Biology Education at Samudra University is still not optimal. Through the Community Partnership Program (PKM), efforts were made to solve problems related to the not yet optimal management of the journal. Together with Jeumpa Journal editorial partners, efforts to optimize the journal were carried out through four stages, namely optimizing the appearance of the journal's website, compiling author guidelines, compiling article templates, and socializing and promoting the journal. Evaluation with Jeumpa Journal editorial partners on all stages of optimization activities that have been carried out is used as a benchmark in preparing follow-up programs in the development.

For new journals, choosing the right name is very important. Apart from attracting the interest of authors and readers, the journal's name also determines the accreditation and indexation process. In addition to using names in national and international languages, the use of a combination of more than one type of language is also commonly used as journal names. This short communication aims to describe the names of journals in Indonesia indexed by Science and Technology Index (SINTA) at rank 1 and 2 regarding the language used. The method used is identifying journal names one by one on the SINTA journal page https://sinta.ristekbrin.go.id/journals at rank 1 and 2, followed by identification of the language used as the journal name. The results obtained show that journals at SINTA 1 rank the most used English names with 74.39%, while in SINTA rank 2, the most use Indonesian names with 57.19%.

Objective: To update knowledge and methods to access and view the journals included in Qualis of CAPES Medicine III, and how to measure the impact factor. Method: Document review on the attempt to verify the way Qualis uses for ranking journals cited by the post-graduate programs of Medicine III in their evaluation periods, and the impact factors obtained by journals indexing base. Results: The classification is annual and are ranking in strata ranging from A1, the highest, and A2; B1; B2; B3; B4; B5; C. The latter has zero evaluation weight. These strata take as reference the impact factor of the journals listed by the programs. The same journal can be classified into different Qualis in other areas, and this is no inconsistency, but expressed the assigned value, in each area, at that particular journal. The Impact Factor is measured using the Journal of Citation Report in Web of Knowledge website. Conclusion: Using the criteria established by WebQualis for stratification of journals there is a quality guidance of what is produced by the program and, based on it, can be made scientific comparison of program performance. Consulting the JCR is recommended because it defines exactly what is the journal's impact factor; Qualis stratifies numerical intervals and not individual journal specificity.

We have estimated the ISI-impact factor of Acta Botanica Brasilica for the past six years, calculated the journal's h-index, calculated the journal's self-citation, examined country and institutions of origin of the papers that cite Acta papers, and examined scope and profile of the most-cited papers published by the journal. Results demonstrated a steep rise in impact factor and citation frequency in 2008, which is most encouraging, but also revealed that the journal is below the level of maturity expected of a 20-year old journal. Visibility of the journal is mostly national although, surprisingly, journal's self-citation of 12% is fairly low. We use Acta as an example to discuss possible strategies to enhance the international visibility of botanical journals that are newcomers to ISI.

The journal Education in Rural Australia (now the Australian and International Journal of Rural Education) has been in existence since 1991. During the Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) period, the journal maintained a B ranking, indicating that it was a quality journal within a specialised field. With the abolishment of the ERA journal rankings, it is important to find other methods to measure the journal's quality. We used Google Scholar to determine the number of citations each paper in the journal received. Using these citations, we calculated an average citation index across four two-year periods to determine an index of journal use, which can be compared to conventional measures, such as Thomson-Reuters' Impact Factortm. Specifically, the number of citations the journal received in indexed peer-reviewed journals in a given year to articles it published in the two years prior was divided by the total number of articles published in the two years prior the year for the index calculation. Using this formula, we determined the average citation index of Education in Rural Australia to be 0.65 in 2011. This result indicates that Education in Rural Australia's mean citations have increased considerably in the last years, up from average citation indices of 0.09 in 2010 and 0.4 in 2009. The journal's growing average citation index is a reflection of the journal's improving quality, and the average citation index may be used to improve the journal's marketing and (with continued calculation) track the success of editorial policy changes and attempted market expansions (e.g., the growing international focus of the journal). The journal's current citation practices are examined, and methods for increasing the average citation indices are discussed. It is suggested that an online-first publication option be adopted by the journal in order to increase the speed of dissemination (and hence citation), and the breadth of the journal's readership.

Student behaviour is an activity carried out by students for each individual. Students who visit campus journal websites are essential in terms of journal accreditation aspects, where this is a benchmark for increasing the journal's potential as a reference. However, some factors influence it where the frequency of students visiting campus journal websites is not as expected in exploring journals, and the enthusiasm of students to download articles is still below the desired expectations. This causes the potential for the journal to obtain national accreditation at a small percentage, and students may think that there are very few reference sources for journals, so it is less attractive on the campus journal website system. Data collection methods were used in this study, such as interviews, literature study, and questionnaires. The dominance of English in scientific papers and the use of English in locally funded research may hinder local comprehension and raise concerns about transitioning from vernacular languages to a universal language in scholarly journals. Additionally, the impact of publication language on journal sustainability is an intriguing area requiring further investigation. This study investigated how the publication languages of 42 Turkish psychiatric journals published between 2010-2023 impact journal sustainability. It examined the effect of publication languages and language changes on sustainability by analyzing information from the DergiPark platform, TR Index, and journal websites. Among the analyzed journals, 8 have ceased publication, while 34 continue. The terminated journals include 3 with Turkish articles, 2 with English articles, and 3 with both Turkish and English articles. Among the 34 ongoing journals in 2023, 3 only accepts Turkish publications, 8 only accept English publications, 22 accept both Turkish and English publications, and 1 accepts both Turkish and English versions of each article. The Turkish-only journal is not indexed by any major indexes. Of the eight English-only journals, one is SCI-Expanded and TR Index, three are indexed by TR Index and DOAJ, three are indexed by TR Index and one is not indexed by any major index. Among the 22 journals publishing in both languages, one is indexed by all the major indexes, four by TR Index and DOAJ, two by DOAJ and six by TR Index only, nine are not indexed by any major index. The use of the local language in journal publications may adversely affect the journal's sustainability, but it is not solely determined by indexing and citation in major index. Furthermore, publishing in English does not guarantee citations from international journals or ensure the long-term viability of the journal.

Journal writing is an open, unevaluated form of free writing that can be used by L1 and L2 students, teachers, and researchers to help them develop language fluency and proficiency, to promote reflective and critical thinking, to contribute to research activities, and to communicate with self, peers, and teachers. The main point of journal writing is to promote evaluation-free reflection and communication, and when written in the L2, to encourage fluency rather than be used as a graded and corrected assignment. This article consists of a series of journal entries about my experiences with different kinds of journal writing over many years. The entries describe “dissertation journals,” language learning journals, private and shared journals, journals for promoting critical and analytical reflection, and journals written for research purposes.

Objective: To measure the journal impact factor for Progress in Transplantation over time and to also identify related journals indexed in transplantation and surgery. Design: Data from Journal Citation Reports (ISI web of science) were used to rank Progress in Transplantation compared to peer journals using journal impact and journal relatedness measures. Social network analysis was used to measure relationships between pairs of journals in Progress in Transplantation’s relatedness network. Main Outcome Measures: Journal impact factor and journal relatedness. Results: Data from 2010 through 2015 indicate the average journal article in PIT was cited 0.87 times (standard deviation [SD] = 0.12) and this estimate was stable over time. Progress in Transplantation most often cited American Journal of Transplantation, Transplantation, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, and Liver Transplantation. In terms of cited data, the journal was most often referenced by Clinical Transplantation, Transplant International, and Current Opinion in Organ Transplantation. Conclusion: The journal is listed both in surgery and transplantation categories of Journal Citation Reports and its impact factors over time fare better with surgery journals than with transplant journals. Network data using betweenness centrality indicate Progress in Transplantation links transplantation-focused journals and journals indexed in health sciences categories.

In 1996, new editorial management took over International Psychogeriatrics (IP), only a year after the frequency of its publication increased from semiannual to quarterly. At the request of the editorial board, an assessment of the journal was conducted by comparing it to other journals in the field of geriatrics and, specifically, geriatric psychiatry. The evaluation included both a modified citation analysis and a review of journal content. The study was undertaken in order to identify the position the journal has within its discipline. Further, it was to identify the journal's strengths and weaknesses with the overall goal of recommending changes to IP's current content and format. IP ranked seventh of 15 journals in terms of impact factor. It is primarily oriented towards the publication of original research, and features fewer longer articles than others in the field. Adding a wider variety of content may increase the overall interest in the journal. However, these changes must be weighed against the goals of the journal and its reputation as a source of original research in the field of geriatrics.

A review of: Duy, Joanna and Liwen Vaughan. “Can Electronic Journal Usage Data Replace Citation Data as a Measure of Journal Use? An Empirical Examination.” The Journal of Academic Librarianship 32.5 (Sept. 2006): 512-17. Abstract Objective – To identify valid measures of journal usage by comparing citation data with print and electronic journal use data. Design – Bibliometric study. Setting – Large academic library in Canada. Subjects – Instances of use were collected from 11 print journals of the American Chemical Society (ACS), 9 print journals of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and electronic journals in chemistry and biochemistry from four publishers – ACS, RSC, Elsevier, and Wiley. ACS, Elsevier, and Wiley journals in chemistry-related subject areas were sampled for Journal Impact Factors and citations data from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). Methods – Journal usage data were collected to determine if an association existed between: (1) print and electronic journal use; (2) electronic journal use and citations to journals by authors from the university; and (3) electronic journal use and Journal Impact Factors. Between June 2000 and September 2003, library staff recorded the re-shelving of bound volumes and loose issues of 20 journal titles published by the ACS and the RSC. Electronic journal usage data were collected for journals published by ACS, RSC, Elsevier, and Wiley within the ISI-defined chemistry and biochemistry subject area. Data were drawn from the publishers’ Level 1 COUNTER compliant usage statistics. These data equate 1 instance of use with a user viewing an HTML or PDF full text article. The period of data collection varied, but at least 2.5 years of data were collected for each publisher. Journal Impact Factors were collected for all ISI chemistry-related journals published by ACS, Elsevier, and Wiley for the year 2001. Library Journal Utilization Reports (purchased from ISI) were used to determine the number of times researchers at the university cited journals in the same set of chemistry-related journals over the period 1998 to 2002. The authors call this “local citation data.” (512) The results from electronic journal use were also analysed for correlation with the total number of citations, as reported in the Journal Citation Reports, for each journal in the sample. Main results – The study found a significant correlation between the results for print journal and electronic journal usage. A similar finding was reported for correlation between electronic journal usage data and local citation data. No significant association was found between Journal Impact Factors and electronic journal usage data. However, when an analysis was conducted for the total number of citations to the journals (drawn from the Journal Impact Factor calculations in Journal Citation Reports) and electronic journal use, significant correlations were found for all publishers’ journals. Conclusion – Within the fields of chemistry and biochemistry, electronic journal usage data provided by publishers are an equally valid method of determining journal usage as print journal re-shelving data. The results of the study indicate this association is valid even when print journal subscriptions have ceased. Local citation data (the citations made by researchers at the institution being studied) also provide a valid measure of journal use when compared with electronic journal usage results. Journal Impact Factors should be used with caution when libraries are making journal collection decisions.

However, the efforts are required to expand the contribution source in the future. Second, it was found that the accessibility of published papers was high in terms of the usability and systemicity of the journal, and the citation index of the journal and the composition and organization of the journal were good. It will be necessary to consider introducing a standard (JATS) for online publishing of academic papers. Third, efforts to improve the quality of the journals have been actively made in view of the performance of online management systems, strictness of screening procedures, activities to strengthen research ethics, and holding workshops and conferences. However, it is believed that calls for strengthening ethical education and IRB approval for human research activities are needed. This study was meaningful in that it provided effective information on the utilization, system, ethics, and academic values to be pursued as a professional journal, and also provided an opportunity to discuss the future direction of the journal's development.

Research productivity is important in school reputation as well as individual faculty evaluation. In order to evaluate research productivity, the quality of research is often measured by proxy through the number of journal articles and ratings of the journals in which they appear. Because of this there is significant pressure on faculty to publish in the “top journals”. There are several metrics for evaluating and ranking journals, each of them with its own merits and limitations. Some commonly used quantitative measures of research quality are citation analyses, acceptance rates, and whether or not a journal is peer reviewed. Alternatively, journals can be ranked qualitatively into stratified groups based on reputation. Reputation, in turn, may be correlated with perceived values of quantitative measures, and thus is more subjective. The purpose of this research is to examine the extent of correlation between various measures of journal quality, in particular between quantitative and qualitative measures. The various measures are compared to examine the extent to which they are similar. Comparisons were also made among business departments. For this sample, overall journal rank was correlated with citation rate but not with acceptance rate. However, quantitative measures were not consistent among academic departments, indicating that journal rank can not be reliably used to make interdepartmental comparisons.

More and more academic journals are adopting an open access policy by which articles are accessible free of charge, while publication costs are recovered through author fees. We study the consequences of this open access policy on the quality standard of an electronic academic journal. If the journal's objective were to maximize social welfare, open access would be optimal. However, we show that if the journal has a different objective (such as maximizing readers' utility, the impact of the journal, or its profit), open access tends to induce it to choose a quality standard below the socially efficient level. Scientific journals are one of the means of formal communication in various knowledge and research results by both researchers and academics. The management of scientific journals towards accredited journals requires several strategies to improve, one of which is at the University of 17 August 1945 Samarinda which currently has 11 journals with an existing open journal system (OJS). This service activity aims to find out and implement the journal publishing process through OJS in accordance with journal accreditation requirements and understand electronic journal management standards based on national journal accreditation regulations and international journal rules. The target of this activity is journal editors as journal managers in the campus environment and able to cooperate in improving accredited journals. The method of this service activity is situation analysis and improvement which is then carried out in four stages, namely the planning stage, activity implementation, activity observation (observation) and mentoring stage. The benchmark for the respondents of the training participants was analyzed in the participant's question and answer session with the journal trainer. In addition, the participants' respondents from the increased understanding of the participants became increased due to their curiosity about the journal management process. Therefore, it can be concluded that the mentoring activities and training provided on the management of scientific journals are effective in increasing participants' understanding in terms of managing scientific journals.

AbstractThe current publication of scientific journals is transitioning from a print format format to an electronic format, which has a different management model than before. Publication of scientific journals is an important thing in the existence of universities. In the dissemination of science results of an education, research, and community service generated by college civitas (Students & Lecturers) can be done with the publication of scientific journals. The purpose of this study is to determine the strategy of management publication of scientific journals that publish many articles of students at higher education. The type of this research is qualitative descriptive research. The research data were collected by indepth interview the Director of Graduate, Head of journal publishing unit, and staff of journal publishing unit. This research was conducted at the Journal Publishing Unit of Postgraduate of Brawijaya University. The managers of scientific journal publications should be continue to improve scientific publishing services and the quality of published articles, so that the management of scientific publications can compete with other electronic journals. The development of electronic journals in Indonesia has grown rapidly, within three years of electronic journal publication in Indonesia has increased sharply, from 1500 journals in 2012 to 16280 journals in 2016. This is a challenge for managers of scientific publications in Brawijaya University. The strategy in developing the management of scientific journal publications of students is to hold training activities of scientific journal writing for students to be able to provide the availability of quality articles. Benchmarking activities and management training for journal editing teams to maintain quality management and scientific journal publications. In addition, it is necessary to improve the reputation of scientific journals by paying attention to the Impact Factor; Index Journal, Ranking Journal, h-index, Number of Cites, & Percentage of Rejection Rates in managed journals.

The authors attempt to determine publishing contribution of editorial board members (EBM) into the rating of their parent journals as exemplified by Russian journals in library and information sciences divided into low-, middle-, and top-rank groups. To determine this contribution, we studied EBM scholarly input to their parent journals vs. to other sources; besides, the scholarly input by EBM and other authors in each journal was compared. No correlation between the journal rank and share of EBM’s publications in their parent journals and/or EBM’s citations of their journal, or correlation between the journal rank and share of EBM papers in the respective journal were detected. However, the positive correlation was revealed between the journal rank and share of foreign EBM, regardless of their scholarly input in their parent journal. The analysis of citation of EBM papers in their journals, as well as the analyses of their journal citations provided by EBM in other sources, demonstrates significant impact of EBM on bibliometric indices of top- and low-rank journals implying active involvement of EBM in the development of their parent serials. The lowest or even negative impact of EBM on journal rank was identified among the middle-rank group of journals since their papers were poorly (if ever) cited. Thus, formal inclusion of experts into editorial boards of those journals and low interest they take in their journal may be assumed. Our findings contribute to scientometric studies of editorial boards and may be of interest to editors-in-chief and founders of journals.

Design/methodology/approach Node2vec is used in a journal citation network to generate journal vector representations. Findings 1. Journals are clustered based on the node2vec trained vectors to form a science map. 2. The norm of the vector can be seen as an indicator of the diversity of journals. 3. Using node2vec trained journal vectors to determine the Rao-Stirling diversity measure leads to a better measure of diversity than that of direct citation vectors. Research limitations All analyses use citation data and only focus on the journal level. Practical implications Node2vec trained journal vectors embed rich information about journals, can be used to form a science map and may generate better values of journal diversity measures. Originality/value The effectiveness of node2vec in scientometric analysis is tested. Possible indicators for journal diversity measure are presented.

The major purpose of this investigation was to identify "core" journals used by agricultural and extension educators. In addition, the importance of journals as a medium of communication and subject matter areas published in the base "core" journal were also examined. A total of 19 issues and 162 articles that appeared in Journal of Agricultural Education (JAE) during the decade of the eighties were analyzed to accomplish the study objectives. A total of 11 journals were identified each of which received a total of at least 5 citations in the base journal (JAE). The top five journals were: Journal of Agricultural Education, Educational and Psychological Measurement, Journal of Extension, Journal of Teacher Education, and Journal of Applied Psychology. These 11 journals accounted for 193 (51%) of the total citations. Journals, followed by books and bulletin/reports, accounted for 73% of the citations. Findings also indicated that agricultural educators tended to publish topics in only six of the 18 topics. Further, the number of times a journal article is cited has increased over the years from 4.2 in 1982 to 11 in 1990, indicating breadth in reading habits of agricultural and extension educators.

Purpose – Journal quality and prestige are the main considerations for researchers, editors, and publishers when submitting manuscripts, citing papers, and developing publishing policies. Journal Citation Reports calculates the impact factor (IF) from journals covered in Social Science Citation Index (SSCI). IF is widely considered as an indicator of journal quality and prestige among business disciplines. Thus, researching what affects the IF is critical. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relation between journal features and the IF, particularly between “hot issues” and the IF, and categorizes journal rankings into top-ten and other journals. Design/methodology/approach – The research sample encompasses publications from 2003 to 2013, focussing specifically on SSCI journals in the categories of business and finance. The examined journal features are the effect of the newly selected as an SSCI journal, frequency of publication, self-citation ratio, citable items, and whether the journal features articles on relevant international economic topics. Findings – The findings are as follows: increasing the publishing frequencies of top-ten journals will elevate IF significantly, conversely, increasing that of other journals will degrade the expected IF; both top-ten and other journals with a high self-citation ratio have a low IF; and publishing papers on critical topics significantly positively affects the IF; however, the level of significance decreases over time. In summary, publishing research on critical topics significantly increases the IF in short term. Originality/value – The findings offer valuable information for researchers, editors, and publishers.

Citations of journals extracted from three randomly selected volumes were tabulated and ranked. Library of Congress subject headings were used to categorize the subjects covered by the top-ranked cited journals. It was concluded that a core of nine journals contributed twenty-five percent of all citations. Church history journals predominated as the source of cited material; Roman and Byzantine subject journals were also highly cited. The core journal collection is concentrated around these three subject domains and, wherever early Christian studies is a prominent curricular focus, it is recommended that these nine journals be available in the library.

Evaluation of academic journals for collection management decisions is made all the more difficult when some journals do not have impact factors as assigned by the Institute for Scientific Information and its Journal Citation Reports. Focusing on science, technology, and medicine journals, this study presents a method of evaluating such nonranked journals. The method is based on finding a comparator journal to the nonranked journal, distinguishing between original research articles and other article types, tracing citations to these two target journals in citing journals, comparing the quality of the citing journals that cite both target journals, and describing the contextual typology of the citations to the target journals. A case study of two medical science journals, the nonranked Annals of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the comparator ranked Canadian Family Physician, illustrates the method. This method can help in determining the value of a nonranked journal in relation to a ranked journal.

Abstract Objective – Electronic resource management challenges and “big deal” cancellations at one Canadian university library contributed to a situation where a number of electronic journal subscriptions at the university’s health sciences library lacked article level linking. The aim of this study was to compare the usage of journals with article level linking enabled to journals where only journal level linking was available or enabled. Methods – A list of electronic journal title subscriptions was generated from vendor and subscription agent invoices. Journal titles were eligible for inclusion if the subscription was available throughout 2018 on the publisher’s platform, if the subscription costs were fully funded by the health sciences library, and if management of the subscription required title-by-title intervention by library staff. Of the 356 journal titles considered, 302 were included in the study. Negative binomial regression was performed to determine the effect of journal vs. article level linking on total COUNTER Journal Report 1 (JR1) successful full-text article requests for 2018, controlling for journal publisher, subject area, journal ranking, and alternate aggregator access. Results – The negative binomial regression model demonstrated that article level linking had a significant, positive effect on total 2018 JR1 (coef: 0.645; p < 0.001). Article level linking increased the expected total JR1 by 90.7% when compared to journals where article level linking was not available or enabled. Differences in predicted usage between journals with article level linking and those without article level linking remained significant at various journal ranking levels. This suggests that usage of both smaller, more specialized journals (e.g., Journal of Vascular Research) and larger, general journals (e.g., New England Journal of Medicine) increases when article level linking is enabled. Conclusions – This study provides statistical evidence that enabling article level linking has a positive impact on journal usage at one academic health sciences library. Although further study is needed, academic libraries should consider enabling article level linking wherever possible in order to facilitate user access, maximize the value of journal subscriptions, and improve convenience for users.

The paper is concerned with ranking academic journal quality and research impact in Finance, based on the widely-used Thomson Reuters ISI (2013) Web of Science citations database (hereafter ISI). The paper analyses the 89 leading international journals in the ISI category of "Business–Finance" using quantifiable Research Assessment Measures (RAMs). The analysis highlights the similarities and differences in various RAMs, all of which are based on alternative transformations of journal citations and impact. Alternative RAMs may be calculated annually or updated daily to determine the citations frequency of published papers that are cited in journals listed in ISI. The RAMs include the classic 2-year impact factor including journal self citations (2YIF), 2-year impact factor excluding journal self citations (2YIF*), 5-year impact factor including journal self citations (5YIF), Immediacy including journal self citations, Eigenfactor (or Journal Influence), Article Influence (AI), h-index, Papers Ignored-By Even The Authors (PI-BETA), Self-citation Threshold Approval Rating (STAR), 5YD2 (namely, 5YIF divided by 2YIF), Escalating Self Citations (ESC) and Index of Citation Quality (ICQ). The paper calculates the harmonic mean (HM) of the ranks of up to 16 RAMs. It is shown that emphasizing 2YIF to the exclusion of other informative RAMs can lead to a misleading evaluation of journal quality and impact relative to the HM of the ranks. The analysis of the 89 ISI journals in Finance makes it clear that there are three leading journals in Finance, namely Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics and Review of Financial Studies, which form an exclusive club in terms of the RAMs that measure journal quality and impact based on alternative measures of journal citations. The next two journals in Finance in terms of overall quality and impact are Journal of Accounting and Economics and Journal of Monetary Economics. As Accounting does not have a separate classification in ISI, the tables of rankings given in the paper are also used to rank the top 3 journals in the sub-category of Accounting in the ISI category of "Business – Finance", namely Journal of Accounting and Economics, Accounting Review, and Journal of Accounting Research.

The Quality Improvement and Research Committee of the Society for Vascular Ultrasound has recognized the Journal for Vascular Ultrasound to promote quality improvement, research and scholarly initiatives of the Society. An understanding of the content and character of its published articles and its status amongst journals on vascular ultrasound will be useful to this mandate. This project aims to identify the scope of Journal for Vascular Ultrasound and its implications for the Society membership. Journal for Vascular Ultrasound Volumes 40 to 42 (2016-2018) were reviewed to identify the number of articles published, the type of scholarly work, and the vascular ultrasound domains represented. The findings were compared with major databases and a targeted list of journals with vascular ultrasound content. In addition, bibliometric parameters specific to Journal for Vascular Ultrasound were identified and compared with other journals. The Journal for Vascular Ultrasound published 71 articles over the 3 years; 100% were vascular ultrasound topics. The most frequent activities were 35 cases, 20 research, and 5 guidelines. The topics were 19 venous, 18 carotid, 7 arterial, 2 aorta, 1 education, and 10 unusual findings, and 4 other studies. In the 312 targeted journals, 4792 articles were published in 2018; 135 were relevant to vascular ultrasound. The maximum vascular ultrasound content in any one journal, other than Journal for Vascular Ultrasound, was 20% (range = 0-20, median = 8%). The impact of Journal for Vascular Ultrasound, by the H-score of 11 and SJR of 0.12, ranks the Journal for Vascular Ultrasound in the lowest 10% of surveyed journals. Of the citable Journal for Vascular Ultrasound articles, only 6% were cited in bibliometric analysis. Publishing scientific articles online in journals is a must for researchers or academics. In choosing the journal of purpose, the researcher must look at important information on the journal's web, such as indexing, scope, fee, quarter and other information. This information is generally not collected in one page, but spread over several pages in a web journal. This will be complicated when researchers have to look at information in several journals, moreover, the information in these journals may change at any time. In this research, web harvesting design is conducted to retrieve information on web journals. With web harvesting, information that is spread across several pages can be collected into one, and researchers do not need to worry if the information has changed, because the information collected is the last or updated information. Harvesting technique is done by taking the page URL of the page, starting the source code from where the information is retrieved and end source code until the information stops being retrieved. Harvesting technique was successfully developed based on the web bootstrap framework. The test data is taken from several scientific journal webs. The information collected includes name, description, accreditation, indexing, scope, publication rate, publication charge, template and quarter. Based on tests carried out using black box testing, it is known that all the features made are as expected.

Objective The objective of this study was to identify core journals in physical therapy by identifying those that publish the most randomized controlled trials of physical therapy interventions, provide the highest-quality reports of randomized controlled trials, and have the highest journal impact factors. Design This study was an audit of a bibliographic database. Methods All trials indexed in the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) were analyzed. Journals that had published at least 80 trials were selected. The journals were ranked in 4 ways: number of trials published; mean total PEDro score of the trials published in the journal, regardless of publication year; mean total PEDro score of the trials published in the journal from 2000 to 2009; and 2008 journal impact factor. Results The top 5 core journals in physical therapy, ranked by the total number of trials published, were Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Clinical Rehabilitation, Spine, British Medical Journal (BMJ), and Chest. When the mean total PEDro score was used as the ranking criterion, the top 5 journals were Journal of Physiotherapy, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), Stroke, Spine, and Clinical Rehabilitation. When the mean total PEDro score of the trials published from 2000 to 2009 was used as the ranking criterion, the top 5 journals were Journal of Physiotherapy, JAMA, Lancet, BMJ, and Pain. The most highly ranked physical therapy–specific journals were Physical Therapy (ranked eighth on the basis of the number of trials published) and Journal of Physiotherapy (ranked first on the basis of the quality of trials). Finally, when the 2008 impact factor was used for ranking, the top 5 journals were JAMA, Lancet, BMJ, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, and Thorax. There were no significant relationships among the rankings on the basis of trial quality, number of trials, or journal impact factor. Conclusions Physical therapists who are trying to keep up-to-date by reading the best available evidence on the effects of physical therapy interventions have to read more broadly than just physical therapy–specific journals. Readers of articles on physical therapy trials should be aware that high-quality trials are not necessarily published in journals with high impact factors.

Background Clinical trial registration has become an important part of editorial policies of various biomedical journals, including a few physical therapy journals. However, the extent to which editorial boards enforce the need for trial registration varies across journals. Objective The purpose of this study was to identify editorial policies and reporting of trial registration details in MEDLINE-indexed English-language physical therapy journals. Design This study was carried out using a cross-sectional design. Methods Editorial policies on trial registration of MEDLINE-indexed member journals of the International Society of Physiotherapy Journal Editors (ISPJE) (Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy, Journal of Hand Therapy, Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy, Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy, Journal of Physiotherapy [formerly Australian Journal of Physiotherapy], Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, Manual Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physical Therapy in Sport, Physiotherapy, Physiotherapy Research International, Physiotherapy Theory and Practice, and Revista Brasileira de Fisioterapia) were reviewed in April 2013. Full texts of reports of clinical trials published in these journals between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2012, were independently assessed for information on trial registration. Results Among the 13 journals, 8 recommended trial registration, and 6 emphasized prospective trial registration. As of April 2013, 4,618 articles were published between January 2008 and December 2012, of which 9% (417) were clinical trials and 29% (121/417) of these reported trial registration details. A positive trend in reporting of trial registration was observed from 2008 to 2012. Limitations The study was limited to MEDLINE-indexed ISPJE member journals. Conclusions Editorial policies on trial registration of physical therapy journals and a rising trend toward reporting of trial registration details indicate a positive momentum toward trial registration. Physical therapy journal editors need to show greater commitment to prospective trial registration to make it a rule rather than an option.

Abstract: Community service is an effort to share knowledge about journal management for journal managers so that they can manage journals properly and correctly. This service is carried out by holding a workshop followed by a journal review. used are workshops and journal surgery. The workshop was held twice and continued with journal review to find out the shortcomings of each journal. The methods used are workshops and journal surgery. The results obtained during the journal management workshop were that the participants knew the management of the journal from a managerial perspective as well as from an article editing perspective. It is hoped that after obtaining the journal management workshop, participants can prepare their journals for national and international accreditation. Improving the quality of scientific journal management is one of the basic components that greatly affects the quality of published journals. Journal managers who are not equipped with good journal management skills will certainly not be able to carry out a good journal management process. This Community Service (PkM) activity carried out in the Mathematics Education Study Program is very useful for journal managers. Especially for managers who have planned to submit their journals to register with the National Journal Accreditation (Arjuna) BRIN. This PkM is also an opportunity for journal managers to correct deficiencies in their respective journals. After understanding what are the shortcomings in the journals that are managed, it will be easier to fix them.

A review of: Bonnevie-Nebelong, Ellen. “Methods for Journal Evaluation: Journal Citation Identity, Journal Citation Image, and Internationalisation.” Scientometrics 66.2 (Jan. 2006): 411-24. Objective – To conduct a number of citation analyses of the Journal of Documentation (JDOC), comparing the results with analyses of the Journal of Information Science (JIS), and the Journal of the American Society of Information Science and Technology (JASIST) to illustrate features of JDOC. Design – Bibliometric study. Setting – Library and information science journal literature. Sample – Citations given by and given to the JDOC were analysed and compared to those from the JASIST and the JIS. Author affiliation data were analysed from articles published in JDOC and from articles citing JDOC. The data were drawn from three time periods: 1975-2003, 1980-2003, and 1990-2003. Methods – Journal Citation Identity was examined for the period 1990-2003. The analysis involved calculating the number of different journals represented by citations given by a journal in a publishing year. The resulting citation/citee ratio is indicative of diversity and extent of scholarly sources used by a journal. Journal Citation Identity was also examined by calculating the number of journal self-citations (in the period 1980 to 2003) as a proportion of the total number of citations given by the journal. A high rate of journal self-citations suggests introspection or isolation from other journals in its field. The content of the three journals was examined for the period 1973-2003 to determine the proportion of scientific content (i.e. articles, notes, reviews, and letters). Journal Citation Image was examined by calculating journal self-citations as a proportion of the citations given by other journals to the sample journal. The result signifies the degree of a journal’s visibility in its field. A second aspect of Journal Citation Image was investigated using the New Journal Diffusion Factor (N JDF). The N JDF was carried out for each year between 1975 and 2003 and calculated the average number of different journals that cite an article in a sample journal. A high number of different citing journals implies influence in the field. The N JDF for the sample journals was compared with their Journal Impact Factor (JIF) over the same period. Two further analyses of data gathered from 1990 to 2003 were conducted for the Journal of Documentation. The first identified journals most frequently co-cited with JDOC, an analysis that can locate a journal within or outside its field. Lastly, Internationalisation analyses were carried out for JDOC. Internationalisation relates to the geographic affiliations of authors of JDOC articles and of authors citing JDOC. Geographic affiliation was analysed using three classifications: affiliation in North America, Western Europe, or other geographic locations. Main results – Journal Citation Identity: JASIST was found to have the highest citation/citee ratio at 1.88, while JDOC and JIS had similar ratios of 1.50 and 1.44 respectively. This finding suggests JASIST draws its citations from fewer journals than JDOC and JIS. The scientific content of JDOC ranged from 18% to 50% in the period analysed, the lowest proportion of the three journals. All journals had seen a reduction in the proportion of journal self-citations over 23 years. Average journal self-citations for the period were 4.3% for JASIST, 3.9% for JDOC, and 3.4% for JIS. Journal Citation Image: The number of journal self-citations as a proportion of the total number of citations given to a journal was relatively stable for the three journals in the period 1991-2003. JASIST had a slightly higher rate at around 30%, the rate for JDOC was approximately 15%, and JIS showed the greatest variation ranging from 25% to 12%. In the years 1980 to 1990 JIS was found to have a much higher proportion of journal self-citations, spiking to over 85% in 1986. JDOC and JASIST self-cited at a rate that differed little over the full 1980 to 2003 period. The average N JDF for JDOC increased from just over 0.3 in 1975 to almost 0.5 in 2003. JIS had a steady average N JDF around 0.2 and JASIST an average of just over 0.3 in the same period. A comparison of the journals’ JIF in these years shows JIS is the only journal with an average JIF that is decreasing. The average JIF for JDOC and JASIST increased. JASIST was the most frequently co-cited journal with JDOC, followed by Information Processing and Management and JIS. Internationalisation: A large proportion of authors publishing in JDOC were affiliated with Western European institutions with a general trend showing decreasing numbers of authors from North America and other geographic areas. Authors citing JDOC were predominantly from North America in the 1990s, but by 2002 authors from Western Europe were citing JDOC in larger numbers. The proportion of citing authors from other regions remained steady at around 10% over the thirteen year period. Conclusions – In comparison with JASIST, the Journal Citation Identity of JDOC shows a broader scientific base with less dependence upon articles from its previous issues. JDOC is cited by a larger number of other journals than JASIST and JIS, indicating a higher degree of visibility in the scholarly community. The journals most often cited alongside JDOC mark it as firmly grounded in the field of library and information science. JDOC is attractive to Western European authors both as a publishing channel and as a journal to which they make reference.

Background. The use of bibliometrics to evaluate the quality and impact of refereed journals has increased along with access to electronic databases and citation counts. Purpose. This analysis compared and contrasted the range of publication metrics available for English-language occupational therapy journals. Method. Bibliometric data were sourced for 23 English-language occupational therapy journals, including data from the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) 2- and 5-year impact factor, JCR Immediacy Index, Eigenfactor Score, Article Influence Score, Scopus Source Normalized Impact per Paper, SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) score, and ResearchGate journal impact score. H-indexes for journals were also sourced. Findings. The American Journal of Occupational Therapy had the highest publication metrics. SJR-based scores included a larger number of journals, whereas JCR-based metrics were more restrictive in the number of journals included. Implications. Multiple metrics should be used to comprehensively understand occupational therapy journal performance.
