Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how journalist’s professional identity has changed because of the large changes of the media industry due to new technology. We also want to increase the understanding of how organizations can support their employees in identity work in connection to organizational changes that may impact the professional identity. Methodology: We have conducted a case study that investigates journalist’s professional identity with an abductive approach. The empirical data was collected using interviews. Conclusion: The study shows that journalists have a distinct professional identity based on journalistic ideals and values such as ethics and neutrality. It was also found that due to new technology the work role as journalists has changed and consequently the professional identity has also partly changed. We can see that regardless of which industry that is facing large changes due new technology, organizations need to understand how the professional identity can be impacted.

Journalism is one of many institutions dealing with transgressions at a societal level. This dissertation is partly about how it has come to occupy that position, but foremost about how practicing that mission constructs and defines journalism as a social institution and constructs identity, legitimacy and power. The object of study is one of the most high-profile programs of investigative television journalism in Sweden, Uppdrag granskning (Mission Investigate), which is analyzed as an instrumental case study.A quantitative content analysis of all 1,034 of Uppdrag granskning’s episodes broadcast between 2001-2014 shows that the public sector is more investigated than the private, and that Vård och omsorg (social care), Ordningsmakt (society monitoring power) and Handel och industri (trade and industry) are the most frequently investigated fields. Whereas the fields of Media (media), Kultur (culture) and Genus (gender) are fields investigated to a minor degree. Politicians and other public officials are more often the objects of investigation than other professional groups. A narrative analysis of five episodes shows how investigations construct journalism’s institutional identity, and reproduce and legitimize journalistic power when presented in the form of a legal narrative. The dissertation also features results of an interview study with five of Uppdrag granskning’s journalists. They give their own perspectives and reflections about investigative journalism and power. The results of the qualitative analysis show how the examined episodes of Uppdrag granskning construct journalism as an institution that: (1) identifies what is wrong in society, and who is responsible, (2) acts as a constructor and guardian of societal moral, (3) interacts in an intricate way with the formal legal system, investigating it, collaborating with it andsometimes stepping in where it fails, (4) exercises a form of justice that is mainly retributive towards those investigated, serves to restitute victims and by means of an emotional focus endeavors to engage and activate viewers’ sense of justice, (5) justifies means of deception and deceit to expose wrongdoing, (6) faces the creative challenge of shouldering the journalistic mission to investigate in a just and fair way, while at the same time making sure the investigations are dramatic and interesting enough to be worth watching on prime time television.

Over the past three decades, the industrial and editorial strategies of French press groups pushed the journalistic labour markets to adapt to new requirements. Faced with these changes, the traditional positions of the actors involved in the journalistic field were deeply challenged leading to a reconfiguration in terms of standards and socio-discursive practices, but also in terms of the distribution of roles and powers. Our research focuses on the case of the French “pigistes” journalists who are located in a "grey area" of the labour market and thereby become privileged "analyzers" of the ongoing changes in the French press industry. The precariousness assigned to them is examined as a relational notion, which allows us to approach very closely the "breakdown-restructuring" movement of the modern French journalistic field. The study of the uses of this notion in the discourses of the main actors in this field brings light on the social logics at work. It underlines what is at stake in the stigmatization of “pigistes” journalists in "precarious" professionals on the one hand and which strategies this stigma help to satisfy on the other hand. It appears that this representation implies a differentiation between two types of journalists (the precarious ones and the others), which singularly makes sense in a socio-economic restructuring of cultural industries. Revealing a tension between legitimacy and modernization of a changing press, the precariousness assigned to the “pigistes” journalists supports the adaptation strategies of the actors involved in the field. Above all, this stigmatization serves firstly this stigmatized journalists who by conducting a “reversal of the stigma” seize the opportunity to bring forth a “para-journalistic” identity based on a culture they would own: the “pigisme.”

Our research investigated in which way newspaperâs journalists identity is influenced by the use of new media on their jobs at the newsroom. For this, we evaluated how the use of smartphone as work tools triggered conflicts and tensions among reporters from DiÃrio do Nordeste who started questioning their own identity as newspaperâs journalists. The choice of DiÃrio as the object of this analysis can be explained by the fact that the newspaper Ââ the second in circulation in the northeast of Brazil â is one of the first in the local scenario to implement journalistic convergence strategies. We adopted as the delimitation of the research the case study of what DiÃrio do Nordeste identifies as multimedia practice. Using data collection techniques, as the empirical observation and depth interviews, was possible to comprehend how the production of multimedia content generated the construction of a whole new habitus at DiÃrioâs newsroom, marked by the development of journalistâs new cognitive competences. We also investigated how the transformations descendant from multimediatic production influenced the relation of force and power in the newsroom. Starting from the hypothesis that the journalists which defines themselves as multimedia are in dominance, we initiated the analysis of conflicts and tensions established on the daily routine of these professionals. From theorical point of view, we discussed identity concept, modernity consequences, we also did a communication theories revision and of its relations with discussion about the presence of technology in contemporaneity and yet reflected about mediatic and journalistic convergence, using the ideas from authors like Henry Jenkins (2008), SalaverrÃa e Negredo (2008), Esther Applegren (2005) and Rosely Fragoso (2006). In the end, we presented how DiÃrio do Nordesteâs journalists define themselves, if as newspapers journalists or multimedia ones and reflected about the new professional shape designed on labour market, marked by the knowledge, practice and paginal functions and on-line journalism related functions convergence.

Le, Roux Judie. „Comparing journalistic cultures : constructing the identity of Fred van der Vyver as newsmaker“. Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/1805.
This study examined how different words and phrases used within the media may portray a certain image of an individual, ultimately impacting the perception that the reader forms of such individual. Specifically, the manner in which Fred van der Vyver was portrayed by both an Afrikaans language newspaper and an English language newspaper in the Fred van der Vyver-Inge Lotz murder case was examined. This was a highly publicized case from March 2005, when Inge Lotz was found murdered, to November 2007, when Fred van der Vyver, who was suspected of killing Inge Lotz, was acquitted. The aim of the study was to compare two South African journalistic cultures, namely the ones represented by Cape Times and Die Burger, respectively, in their construction of Fred van der Vyver as newsmaker. The rationale for the study was that newspaper coverage of a murder as well as of the investigation and trial which follow creates a certain perception among its readers, and that this perception is based on the information that readers accumulate by reading various published articles. The hypothesis was that both newspapers treated Fred van der Vyver as a newsmaker, and as a murdered in particular, by making use of various linguistic devices. The data analyzed were a selection of articles published between March 2005 and November 2007 in the online versions of Cape Times and Die Burger. A focal point of the study was to show how different aspects of newspaper reporting – specifically headlines and the text itself – construct a particular view or image of the case in general and of Fred van der Vyver in particular. It was found that neither the Cape Times nor Die Burger wrote that Fred van der Vyver was the murderer but both suggested it throughout by making use of linguistic devices. Loaded words, for example, were used to describe certain aspects of the case, and these aspects were then associated with Fred van der Vyver. Fred van der Vyver`s identity had been presented as that of a murderer within the press by means of linguistic tools and language use. The hypotheses was therefore borne out by the data, as both newspapers had indeed portrayed the identity of Fred van der Vyver as that of a murderer. What we read in the papers does have an influence on what we perceive to be true, objective or accurate and on how we ultimately form an opinion. In this case, the public automatically accepted Fred van der Vyver’s identity as portrayed in the press, namely as that of a murderer, and assumed that he was guilty once he was arrested.

The present work is structured by two main perspectives: the French-German comparison and the construction of the professional identity of national daily press journalists. The construction of professional identity is analyzed taking into account the conjunction of interactions between the journalist as individual, the organization in which he is employed, the professional group to which he belongs and his social environment, with consideration of the cultural background of each country in which these interactions take place. Before conducting this analysis on a basis of approximately thirty semi-structured interviews that have been conducted with print and online journalists, we first took a closer look on the approaches developed by researchers in France and Germany. In order to limit the object of this research, the comparison has been restricted to the following specializations: politics, society and culture. The coexistence of the print edition and the newspaper’s website defies the professional identity of journalists and has an impact on the self-perception and the perception of each other of print and online journalists. In this context, differences between print and online journalists appear which lead to transnational similarities between the journalists of each support (print or web), even if all journalists are united by common references linked to ancient ideals of the journalists’ profession.Despite these strong similarities, the construction of the professional identity is influenced by the national context: especially the impact of the differences in each country’s administration can be observed on different levels, for example in the structure of the media landscape and the news organizations and their departments as well as in the journalists’ training and their professional mobility

This thesis goes through the notions of "profession", "professionnalisation", "professionnalism", "corporation", "sociability" questionning dramatic and musical criticism as an original part of journalistic circle. This one is distinguished by an ambiguous social position, between theater and journalism. We'll consider the ways the profesional group rises up and gets built, his characteristics, his representations and values system. The analysis is based on the study of annual publication of the "profesionnal and mutual association of the dramatic and musical criticism", between 1899 and 1937. Presenting the approach, the first part examines the context of rising up and structuration of the profesional group, and the critic fonction and place from 1880 to 1930. We consider here the different fonctions of theater journalism ("critique", "soiriste", "echotier", "courrieriste". . . ) and point out the modern fonction of the theater director. In the second part, we study the composition of the professionnal association and its strategies for legitimation. While the multiple professionnal activities of the members insists on the link between litterary, journalistic, theater, and politic circles, the critics group tries to defend his legitimity and his power in front of the artists, and the theater administration. They gradually conquer a real power to manage the conflicts. The third part questions the strategies used to keep this power. Those ones first suppose the cohesion and the unicity of the group expressed by the inside sociability practices and the mutualist character of the association. The profits demanded are more symbolic than material. The political stake comes first, as we can see also in the outside sociability practices (banquets, international congresses). Those ones develop a large network of knowings, which is a way for individual social progress, and source of collective legitimation

Based on the current situation in the media and the fact that newspapers have cut down on journalists over the last ten to fifteen years, especially those located in small, remote areas, the main purpose of this thesis was to study how all the remaining local editors in rural Västerbotten think of their role and what their driving forces are as well as what challenges and opportunities they face in their everyday work life. Qualitative interviews were conducted with all the seven local editors who currently work in rural Västerbotten and then analyzed through theories of local journalism and democracy, a media landscape in constant change, journalistic profession and identity. The results showed that their role is complex and has plenty of contradictions. Their driving forces and ambitions conflict with their work situation. While they are driven by high democratic standards in their work, they feel that they don’t have enough time for investigative journalism as a lot of their time goes to reporting from at least two municipalities each. They also express that the one municipality where they don’t live doesn’t get as much coverage as they would like and is somewhat forgotten. A lot of them are well known in the place where they live and work and some people feel a close connection to the newspaper because of them. Many of them also have difficulties stepping out of their role in their spare time. At the same time, they express that they don’t have the same contact with readers like they used to. They are close but at the same time distanced from their readers.

Drawing on broader discussions that attempt to envision new ways of negotiating identity, nationalism and race in a post-colonial, post-apartheid South Africa, this thesis examines how whiteness is constructed and negotiated within the framework of literary-journalistic narratives. It is significant that so many established journalists have chosen a literary format, in which they use the structure, conventions, form and style of the novel, while clearly foregrounding their journalistic priorities, to re-imagine possibilities for narratives of identity and belonging for white South Africans. I argue that by working at the interstice of literature and journalism, writers are able to open new rhetorical spaces in which white South African identity can be interrogated.
This thesis examines the literary narratives of Rian Malan (My Traitor&rsquo
s Heart, 1991), Antjie Krog (Country of My Skull, 1998, and Begging to be Black, 2009), Kevin Bloom (Ways of Staying, 2009) and Jonny Steinberg (Midlands, 2002). These writers all seem to grapple with the recurring themes of &lsquo
history&rsquo
, &lsquo
narrative&rsquo
and &lsquo
identity&rsquo
, and in exploring the narratives of their personal and national history, they attempt to make sense of their current situation. The texts that this thesis examines exhibit an acute awareness of the necessity of bringing whiteness into conversation with &lsquo
other&rsquo
identities, and thus I explore both the ways in which that is attempted and the degree to which the texts succeed, in their respective projects. I also examine what literary genres offer these journalists in their engagement with issues of whiteness and white identity that conventional forms of journalism do not. These writers are challenging the conventions of genre &ndash
both literary and journalistic &ndash
during a period of social and political flux, and I argue that in attempting to limn new narrative forms, they are in fact outlining new possibilities for white identities and ways of belonging and speaking. However, a close reading of these literary-journalistic narratives reveals whiteness in post-apartheid South African to be a multifaceted and often contradictory construct and position. Despite the lingering privilege and structural advantage associated with whiteness, South African whiteness appears strongly characterised by a deep-seated anxiety that stems from a perpetual sense of &lsquo
un-belonging&rsquo
. However, while white skin remains a significant marker of identity, there does appear to be the possibility of moving beyond whiteness into positions of hybridity which offer interesting potential for &lsquo
becoming-other&rsquo

The research aimed at analyzing the journalistic content of Cerro Cora and FM Melodia radio stations and certifying that the medium represents in a symbolic manner the culture and identity of the neighbouring communities. The analysis took place on the borders of Ponta Porã-Juan Caballero and Corumbá-Puerto Quijarro and the choice of the research objects, i.e. the neighbouring communities\' radio stations, happened thanks to their binational characteristic. Since it is a borderline region of Brazil, with countries separated by land borders and with no actual barriers between them, the exchange between communities is common-place and thus such municipalities of Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraguay and Bolivia are very peculiar subjects to research. Hence, the goal here is to identify whether the language and experiences of the population of the borders are present in the broadcast of the radio stations.

Most of the analyses dealing with gender models in sport medias lead to the same conclusion: a strong conformity to sexual order. Widely studied in Anglo-Saxon literature, male and female media representations in specialized sport magazines are particularly representative of what CONNELL (1987) calls the hegemonic masculinity and the emphasized feminity. On this basis, this thesis compares the results of these studies by meticulously analysing the gender models presented in specialised mountain bike publications. As mountain biking is an equipped outdoor activity, it is at first sight be associated to male and female models which are quite remote from the most traditional definitions of the sex categories. The analysis of the corpus, based on three main magazines in the field: Vélo Vert, Vélo Tout Terrain and VTTMag confirms at first the strong presence of the most extreme aspects of both hegemonic masculinity and emphasized feminity. But some riding contexts or specific statuses among the Mountain Bike circle provide the readers with much more innovative gender models, quite remote from the traditional media representations. Studying the Mountain Bike circle by focusing on the gender model construction in specialised publications permits to question the role of media in the production of a legitimate definition of the activity, but also to underscore the doxa (BOURDIEU, 1997) that structures this field of practice in terms of sex social relations. The analysis of career paths and journalistic practices shows that two distinct kinds of journalists exist. Based on opposite professional identification processes, these two profiles lead to more or less critical relationships with the Mountain Bike circle and the gender models enhanced in them. Moreover, these sex social relations which prevail among the editorial staffs prevent women from being heard. Insufficient in number, weakened by their status of freelance journalist and male journalist's wife, they come up against the strong male sociability which is in force in editorial offices, genuine places of construction of a "Mountain Bike masculinity". Beyond the importance of the production unit, the publishing unit, and more precisely the different publishing houses, their history, their organization, highly influence the position of each title, strongly orientating the modes of mise en scene of gender models

ENGLISH ABSTRACT:In a system of representative government, the media is assumed as an important institution to reflect public concerns and holding government accountable for the way in which it addresses these public concerns. Not only is this role imposed by a paradigm which views the media as one of the institutions that sustain and consolidate liberal democracy – the so-called fourth estate alongside the legislative, executive and judicial pillars – but the media itself has conceptualised its identity around the notion that journalists are a “vital part of political life” (Sparks, 1991:58). This study explores the validity of this authority. It suggests that the authority of the media to frame public concerns in a way that is useful for ordinary citizens to “bridge the gap between the private, domestic world and the concerns and activities of the wider society (McQuail, 2005:432)” has been eroded because citizens feel that their concerns and priorities have become secondary to the priorities of powerful state, economic and other “experts” who determine the news agenda. At the same time, there is a general sense that representative government or what is generally known as liberal democracy is losing its currency because citizens have developed a “habit of seeing the political system as indifferent and unresponsive” to their problems and their circumstances (Mathews, 1999:33). This study explores the potential of a more productive relationship between the media and citizens to rekindle and energise the role of citizens to contribute to the public work of solving common problems that face the wider society. This study proposes three theoretical frameworks – democratic professionalism, public journalism and deliberative democracy – with the potential to re-conceptualise the way journalists consider their professional role. This re-conceptualisation raises the possibility for reassessing the political work of journalists and the political work of citizens and build new habits of participation and discussion in the political process of communities.

This thesi has for objective the study of the journalistic narrative strategies used for re/construction, symbolically, the poor people's identities and socially excluded. The newspaper analyzed in the research is Zero Hora of Porto Alegre/RS city, in the period from 2003 to 2008. The narrative logy it is constituted in the tool of analysis of the journalistic matters. The thesi is divided in five chapters. In the first, they are articulate the conceptual and methodological bases used to guide the investigation. The second contemplates the study of the mediatization of the citizenship and of the public space. In the third chapter, it's looked for to problematize the nature, the tensions, the strategies and the mediations of the journalistic narrative. In the four chapter are approached the proposals of the public journalism, know them and competences, necessary that practice of political and educational dimension. In the last, are presented the conclusions of the thesi. The research indicates that the construction of the identities of most of the people is characterized with base in a referential in terms cultural, economical, social and moral. It is ended that, in the journalistic field and in the specific case of the newspaper Zero Hora, live together, in the minimum, two currents of thoughts and narrative practice: a more critic, pro-positive, humanist and citizen, that builds the news des/constraint the effective reality and based in the language of the rights and other current, more commercial and traditional than is shown competent in the language of the show and of the technological convergence.
Paganotti, Ivan. „Pelos olhos de um observador estrangeiro: representações do Brasil na cobertura do correspondente Larry Rohter pelo New York Times“. Universidade de São Paulo, 2010. http://www.teses.usp.br/teses/disponiveis/27/27152/tde-05112010-111508/.
Objective: Journalistic articles published in the The New York Times, by Larry Rohter, the newspapers correspondent in Brazil, are based on a full range of impressions and notions regarding the country that his readers might have and might recognize as valid. This study seeks to identify the textual strategies followed by Rohter to reproduce, change, question, deny, or create Brazilian descriptions. Methods: By means of critical discourse analysis, mechanisms for translating concepts peculiar to Brazil for foreign understanding are evaluated, taken from basic shared knowledge and analogies with similar American concepts. The influence and reinforcement of anticipated Brazilian imagery and speculations regarding measures to be taken in the economic and political areas of the country are also analyzed. Results: Even though the storylines call up stereotypical images of Brazil, presuppositions are disrupted by distracting events that emerge and break with what is expected. The imbalance established by Rohter ends up increasing reader interest in less urgent news items, but this strategy is not as necessary in situations that are obviously conflicting, and that represent deviations in the social order, which are naturally presumed in the texts.

During the 20th century, the relationship between Media and Sport were very fertile. The revenues generated by the sale of broadcast rights, the Communication and the Media have a great influence over the global success of football. Media and sports organizations have a relationship based on tensions and cooperation and also very fluid boundaries between them. In this present work, we want to understand how media influence sports organizations, more precisely, how football clubs become a space of content and information production. Recently, sports organizations have invested on media and communication departments, either by hiring public relations and media professionals or by creating their own corporate means of communication. We have selected as research objects, the media of three sports organizations: the WebTV of Paris Saint-Germain (France), the website of Botafogo (Brazil) and the subscription TV channel of Benfica (Portugal). Our empirical work was based on ethnographic interviews with the media and communication staff at these football clubs. Based on our interviews, we aim to answer three questions about the creation of these club owned media: why they were created; how they are structured; and who is responsible for their implementation. The choice of these three clubs allowed a comparative study and the analysis of different markets and realities with diverse levels of modernization, that together with each local social context made possible an attempt to offer a generalization about club owned media and the consequences for sports journalism and the relationship between sport and media

The purpose of this investigation is to show the historic development of Palestinian journalism and the working conditions of Palestinian journalists nowadays. Several questions have motivated this research. Is it possible to be a journalist in a context physically and psychologically limited by violence? Is it possible for a Palestinian journalist to be “objective” and to work professionally in such a context? Do Palestinian journalists encounter more difficulties to accomplish their job? What kinds of institutions are responsible for the protection of journalists in the Occupied Territories? Which is the legal framework of Palestinian journalism? What training and courses does a Palestinian must follow in order to become a journalist? There is a specific “Palestinian journalistic tradition” that is part of the journalistic tradition of the region, which is still poorly understood. This legacy is a product of the region’s history and the political, economic and social conditions. The struggle for an independent state explains the recurrence of political activism among Palestinian journalists. Furthermore, the younger generations of journalists demand a higher level of professionalization and professionalism of their former colleagues, as they move away from the political sphere. This investigation seeks to clarify the “Palestinian journalistic tradition” and its elements to understand why, despite the activism behind this legacy, Palestinian journalists are able to work professionally. Palestinian journalists are genuine spokesmen of their society
This research aims to identify, understand and analyze the strategies of representation of alterity in Brazilian television narratives, taking as specific objects of study the journalistic and serial fiction genres, in the formats of in-depth reporting and telenovela (soap opera). The defined corpus includes 16 editions of the journalistic program Globo Repórter and four telenovelas - \"Além do Horizonte\", \"Amor Eterno Amor\", \"Joia Rara\" and \"Salve Jorge\" - that address other countries, as well as biomes and communities in Brazil portrayed as exotic. Our approach combines theoretical references of language sciences, cultural studies and the specific fields of journalism and fiction theories, as well as scholars in the areas of narrative, image and television language studies, including authors such as S. Moscovici, H. Bhabha, M. Farré, J. Català, T. Todorov, S. Hall, K. Woodward, M. Foucault, V. Flusser, F. Jost, A. Machado, M. Gomes, E. Bucci, and M. Sodré. Among the basic theoretical-methodological concepts for the proposed analysis are those of social representation; narrative of alterity, designed as an opposing-complementary idea to the national narrative; evenemential image, which contextualizes the connection between the production of visual narratives and the organization of world experiences; and the notions of geographical and socio-cultural alterity, which indicate a way to examine the different boundaries between the \"self\" / \"us\" and the \"other\" in communicational processes. After presenting theoretical reflections on the fields of narrative, images and journalistic and fictional discourses, we will analyze the audiovisual material, focusing on three categories that allow us to identify the main resources applied to the representation of the other in television: (a) the strategies of authentication and production of reality effects based on a testimonial rhetoric; (b) the construction of oppositions and the demarcation of boundaries between the near and the distant; and (c) the interactions between fictionalization and factualization in narratives, driven by a type of configuration that takes alterity itself as the intrigue or conflict of a story at different levels of intensity. Finally, we identify eight strategies that work as structuring frameworks for alterity narratives applied to journalism and serial fictions on TV, reiterating the functions of reconfiguration and disciplining of experience in this field of representation.
