Many psychological explanations have been advanced to explain left—right reversal in mirror images, but Gregory and Haig have each proposed a physical explanation for the reversal: the first is based upon the physical rotation used to present the surface of the object to the mirror, and the second on the classical optics of reflection. These physical explanations are considered together with an explanation based on object symmetry. The apparent reversal of directional coordinates (eg left and right) that occurs in the mirror images of most objects is distinguished from reversals achieved by ph

This study compared a variety of accounts in the light of empirical data. We formulate a Downsian signaling model where the incumbent government, through its choice of policy, reveals information both regarding own preferences and external circumstances that may call for a particular policy. We show that policy reversal may indeed exist as an equilibrium phenomenon. This is partly because the incumbent party has superior opportunities to reveal information, and partly because its reputation

The mirror puzzle related to the perception of mirror images as left–right reversed can be more fully understood by considering an extended problem that includes also the perception of mirror images that are not left–right reversed. Abstract In his recent book, Capital and Ideology, French economist Thomas Piketty devotes the final chapter to the changing dimensions of political conflict in Western democracies. The goal of this article is to confront some of his findings with mainstream political science. Piketty’s arguments are confronted with the findings of scholars within political science. To begin the article, we establish two research questions in the introduction. We then delineate the gradual reversal of the educational cleavage and subsequent emergence of the multi-elite system according to Piketty. He demonstra

A microfossil study of two boreholes, Araromi and Gbekebo (Geological Survey of Nigeria borehole numbers 1131 and 1132) (Figure 1), revealed the occurrence of Buntonia beninensis Reyment (1960, 1963) in the late Paleocene interval. This species was found to have forms with normal overlap and hinge element and forms with a reversal of these morphological features. In the former, the left valve is larger than the right, which bears the projecting terminal hinge element, whereas, in the latter, the larger valve is the right valve with the smaller left valve bearing the projecting terminal hinge e

Abstract Background Resistant and uncontrolled hypertension prominently amplifies the risk of end-stage renal disease and fatal cardiovascular events. Therapeutic inertia, despite maximum tolerated anti-hypertensive medications, puts patients at high risk, thus non-pharmacologic therapies have been proposed. The ROX arteriovenous coupler (ROX, Medical Inc., San Clemente, CA, USA), initially developed for treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, exploits the biomechanical effects of diverting arterial blood into a low-resistance, high-compliance venous segment, thereby decreasing art

The extent to which pattern reversal evoked potential amplitudes are distributed symmetrically over the scalp was investigated as a function of stimulus spatial frequency. Nine right-handed male subjects viewed sinusoidal grating stimuli of 4.0 and 0.5 c/deg phase reversed every 900 msec. A visual half-field configuration enabled selective stimulation of the right- or left-hemisphere visual cortex. Evoked responses were recorded from the 2 cm above the inion (Oz) and at 7 and 13 cm lateral to Oz. Analyses of normalized evoked response amplitudes showed a significant asymmetry for the 4.0 c/deg

Material and Methods: Six patients with lobar agenesis of the liver, 5 right- and one left-sided, are presented. CT was used to confirm diagnosis. Chest radiography, barium meals, and urograms were also analyzed. Results: In right-sided agenesis, the following were observed: a) hammock or U-shaped deformity of the stomach; b) colonic interposition of the diaphragm (Chilaiditi's syndrome); and c) reversal of the cranial orientation of the colonic hepatic flexure compared to the splenic flexure. This study investigates the developmental progression of the acquisition of skills necessary for correct responses to various types of left-right identification tasks. The types of identification tasks which are considered in this study differ in terms of whether a midline body cross is required in the identification task and whether there is a reversal in the left-right orientation of the object being identified. A pairwise assessment of these various identification tasks is used to explore the nature of both “prerequisite” and “transference” relations that may exist among them.

AbstractWe report a patient in whom a cavopulmonary anastomosis had been constructed, along with repair of anomalous pulmonary venous drainage. Left-sided pulmonary venous obstruction led to redistribution of the flow to the right lung. The reversal of flow in the left pulmonary artery was accentuated by flow through collateral arteries feeding the left lung. Within 14 months, the collateral flow increased six-fold, resulting in a doubling of the cardiac output.

After permanent His bundle pacing, the LBBB was immediately corrected; however, the right bundle branch was injured during the procedure. Subsequent recovery of the right bundle branch block and normalization of heart function were observed during follow-up. This case indicates that LBBB might result in the development of nonischemic cardiomyopathy and emphasizes the necessity of a temporary pacemaker during His bundle pacing for patients with LBB
