Over the past 30 years, the sterile insect technique (SIT) has become a regular component of area-wide integrated pest management (AW-IPM) programs against several major agricultural pests and vectors of severe diseases. The SIT-based programs have been especially successful against dipteran pests. However, the SIT applicability for controlling lepidopteran pests has been challenging, mainly due to their high resistance to the ionizing radiation that is used to induce sterility. Nevertheless, the results of extensive research and currently operating SIT programs show that most problems with th

Lepidoptera is the second larger order of Insecta Class. Lepidopteran which feed of species of the Arecaceae family are notorious for the damage they cause, attacking a range from seedlings to the fruit. There are several control methods used against these pest insets, and among them, chemical pesticides are the most explored. Biological and mechanical control are also relevant, but they require a large number of trained workers. Behaviour modulation through chemical communication, using pheromones, stands out with a great potential to sustainably control insect populations. Pheromones have al

These tree tissues are utilized by many different insect pests around the world. In some cases, these pests can cause loss of tissues, deformation, or even tree death. Many of these pests are native to the region in which they typically damage trees, and their damage is often confined to stressed or dying trees. However, sometimes these and other such pests can be non-native or even invasive, and can impact trees in new areas.

The results of the research of efficiency of use of biological preparations against dominant lepidopteran pests in peach plantations in the conditions of the Southern Steppe of Ukraine are presented. It was found that the use of biological preparations reduced the damage of shoots by caterpillars of lepidopteran pests by 2.3-6.1 times, to fruits - by 1.7-3.7 times compared to the control variant.

The purpose of our study was to develop biological methods to protect soybean from pests. Lepidoptera is believed to be one of the most numerous groups of insects in this crop. As a conservative estimate, 20 species of Lepidoptera were found in soybean agrocenosis; the greatest damage to Glycine max L. caused Etiella zinkinella Tr. 1832 and Helicoverpa armigera Hb. 1805. It was shown that not less than 500 m distance of crops from the main reserve of pests – robinia and the use of early ripening varieties provided the minimum loss of bean yield (no more than 0.9 – 1.9%). The paper includes the results of the study of the anthropogenic impact on the insect biodiversity of the green spaces of Chisinau Municipality. A total of 99 species of insects were identified in the urban ecosystems, between them 73 species of butterflies, 14 beetles, 9 dragonflies and 3 bedbugs, including 7 pest species and 10 rare species. The anthropogenic environment negatively influences the insect diversity, but is tolerant of harmful invasive species.

The restricted host range of many baculoviruses, highly pathogenic to Lepidoptera and non-pathogenic to mammals, limits their use to single or few closely related Lepidopteran species and is an obstacle to extending their implementation for pest control. The insect immune response is a major determinant of the ability of an insect pathogen to efficiently multiply and propagate. We have developed an original model system to study the Lepidopteran antiviral immune response based on Spodoptera littoralis resistance to AcMNPV (Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus) infection and the

Our long-term goal is to learn to control (expand and restrict) the host range of baculoviruses. In this project our aim was to expand the host range of the prototype baculovirus Autographa cali/arnica nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcMNPV) towards American and Israeli pests. To achieve this objective we studied AcMNPV infection in the non-permissive hosts L. dispar and s. littoralis (Ld652Y and SL2 cells, respectively) as a model system and the major barriers to viral replication. We isolated recombinant baculoviruses with expanded infectivity towards L. dispar and S. littoralis and tested their

Our original aims were to elucidate the mechanisms through which the immunosuppressive insect virus, the Campoletis sonorensis polydnavirus (CsV) promotes replication of a well-characterized pathogenic virus, the Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV) in hosts that are mildly or non-permissive to virus replication. According to the BARD panels criticism we modified our short-term goals (see below). Thus, in this feasibility study (one-year funding) we aimed to show that: 1. S. littoralis larvae mount an immune response against a baculovirus infection. 2. Immunosuppressio

Despite the severity of its impact, no classical biological control programs have been reported. However, native natural enemies, particularly the egg parasitoid Telenomus sp., have shown promising potential.
