To track the source of infection and understand the aetiological characteristics, we performed surveillance for field mice carriage of leptospirosis in 2011. Four strains of leptospire were isolated from Apodemus agrarius. PCR confirmed the four isolates as pathogenic. Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonotic disease. Pathogenesis of leptospirosis is not well understood. Identification of virulence factors of pathogenic Leptospira and their roles in pathogenesis is crucial. Based on available whole-genome sequences of Leptospira, two presumptive virulence genes which are homologous to the invasionA (invA) gene of Rickettsia prowazekii and the mammalian cell entry (mce) gene of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, have been identified. The function of these genes may involve in the attachment and invasion of eukaryotic cells. We proposed that these gene homologues should

Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonosis caused by bacteria from the genus leptospira. Several reports have suggested the roles of cytokines in pathogenesis of this infectious disease. In this study, cytokine gene expression in kidneys livers and lung was investigated. In addition to host cytokine gene expression, the expression of leptospira genes at target organs was also studied. Golden Syrian hamsters were injected with virulent or avirulent leptospira interrogans serovar pyrogenes. Kidney liver and lung tissues were collected for pathological examination and gene expression. RNA was extracte
