Elmer Imes (1883-1941) measured for the first time the infrared spectrum of hydrogen chloride. His results ended the debate on the quantization of molecular motions. However, despite the recognition he achieved for it, his scientific career was altered by the barriers faced by African-American citizens in the Jim Crow-era United States. This article explores Imes's biography and the influence of his work, showing how both reflect the lives of those who suffered from segregation and racism daily.

Health literacy supports individuals’, families’, and communities’ health-care decisions. As mediators between health information seekers and medical literature, librarians are essential purveyors of health literacy. Users’ trust in libraries as sources of reliable and current health information presupposes the appropriate training of librarians; however, LIS programs lack benchmarks for educating generalist students in health information. On-the-job training remains the latter’s sole recourse. This research employs content analysis to explore the current state of health literacy training in L

This article is a sales pitch for pictures, even though art librarians already value visual materials highly. A decade’s advances in online access at a major documentary picture provider, the Library of Congress’ Prints and Photographs Division, should encourage librarians to visit the online United States national library often, and also to offer more of their own collections through the World Wide Web. Despite the beneficial digital image navigation features introduced into the Prints & Photographs Online Catalog (PPOC), many improvements are still needed and there is a long list of desi

Abstract In 1905, the librarian Mary Lemist Titcomb sent her library’s janitor into the Maryland countryside with a wagon full of books, thereby establishing the first bookmobile in the United States. Titcomb was a deliberate rhetor who proactively distributed her writings to encourage the adoption of the book wagon throughout the United States and the world. She used place-based rhetoric to establish her own ethos. She also leveraged her material environment in order to promote the book wagon, speak back to negative stereotypes of rural people, and negotiate gender and class associations surr

Surveys of faculty were conducted at two higher education institutions in England and the United States to ascertain their perceptions of information literacy. Faculty were also asked about the extent to which they incorporated information literacy skills into their courses. Similarities were found across the two institutions both in the importance that faculty attached to information skills and what they actually did to incorporate the skills within curricula. The results reflect an information literacy skills gap between what faculty (and librarians) want for their students and the practical

Libraries may vary in the level and fullness of cataloging they give to video recordings and in the methods they use to provide access to them. This paper reports the results of a survey exploring the level of cataloging and access methods applied to videos, the degree to which catalogers view screen credits, and how often various credit information is included and used to create access points in catalog records in selected U.S. public and Association of Research Libraries member libraries.
