The significant presence of high-carbon industries in China’s export trade and the substantial trade surplus in recent years are key factors contributing to the increase in China’s carbon emissions. China’s current export trade model does not align with the requirements of low-carbon economic development. Considering China’s future emission reduction goals and responsibilities, we should aim to achieve a low-carbon trade transformation, establish a trading method that is compatible with developing a low-carbon economy, and actively promote the development of a low-carbon economy. The IDB's Integration & Trade Journal includes articles on the different aspects of integration in Latin America and the Caribbean, on hemispheric integration and, furthermore, on similar processes in other parts of the world. This issue addresses the topic of climate change, and more specifically, its links with economic development and international trade. The first section of this issue includes presentations from the IDB Conference "Development in a more hostile climate," held in Washington, D.C. in 2009. The second section includes four essays on the consequences of climate change, fr

Using the dynamic, three-region environmental multi-sector general equilibrium model EMuSe, we find that pricing carbon in Germany or Spain only leads to a permanent negative effect on output in these economies. The induced emissions reduction is not large enough to overcompensate for the increase in marginal production costs. If the rest of Europe joins the carbon pricing scheme, long-run output effects are positive. However, in this case, transition costs are even larger due to close trade relations within Europe. We find evidence for carbon leakage, which can be reduced slightly by a border

This publication presents the results of a pre-feasibility study to introduce a green hydrogen (GH2) market in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). The study analyzed the potential supply and competitiveness of producing GH2 in T&T and the actions needed to build a foundation for producing green ammonia and methanol. The study updated previous estimates of renewable energy generation potential in the country. The study also highlighted Trinidad and Tobago's comparative advantage to produce GH2, with its ability to capitalize on existing infrastructure, its know-how and capabilities, and its long

Climate mitigation scenarios are an essential tool for analyzing the macroeconomic and financial implications of climate change (physical risk), and how the transition to a low-carbon economy could unfold (transition risk). The Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS) has co-developed a set of climate mitigation scenarios for climate financial risk assessment. Despite the important role that these scenarios play in climate stress tests, the understanding of their main characteristics and limitations is still poor. In this paper, we contribute to filling this gap by focusing on the foll

"Today, more than 70% of global production for key critical minerals is concentrated in just a few countries, raising serious concerns about supply security, market volatility, and geopolitical risk. Achieving a just and sustainable energy transition hinges on fair and reliable access to critical minerals—materials key for low-carbon technologies. However, global supply chains remain environmentally damaging and vulnerable to geopolitical tensions, creating systemic risks for both climate and economic goals. • A Global Minerals Trust offers a new multilateral model to promote responsible stewa
