The significant presence of high-carbon industries in China’s export trade and the substantial trade surplus in recent years are key factors contributing to the increase in China’s carbon emissions. China’s current export trade model does not align with the requirements of low-carbon economic development. Considering China’s future emission reduction goals and responsibilities, we should aim to achieve a low-carbon trade transformation, establish a trading method that is compatible with developing a low-carbon economy, and actively promote the development of a low-carbon economy. The export trade of China, the factory of the world, promotes economic growth while increasing carbon emissions. This study integrates China’s multi-regional input–output table and the world input–output table to explore the international transfer-in effect and foreign spillover effect of carbon emissions caused by China’s export trade. A structural decomposition analysis model is also used to identify the influencing factors of carbon emissions caused by China’s export trade of intermediate and final products. Results show that: (1) 45.13–58.87% of the transfer-in carbon emissions resulting f

Abstract In this Perspective, we suggest that research on just transitions and energy justice needs to better attend to the increasingly important trade-offs arising from issues related to speed and acceleration of low-carbon transitions. We identify and elaborate two important tensions that policymakers face when they want to simultaneously achieve both just and rapid low-carbon transitions. First, the way in which participatory processes may increase justice but slow the speed of action; and second the way in which incumbent mobilization can accelerate transitions but entrench injustices. Based on the panel data of 31 provinces in mainland China from 2001 to 2020, this paper empirically examines the impact of agricultural trade on agricultural carbon emissions and its mechanism. The results show that agricultural trade has a significant inhibitory effect on agricultural carbon emissions, and its effects are heterogeneous, and the effect is more obvious in the central and western regions and non-grain-producing areas than in the eastern regions and major grain-producing areas. From the perspective of mechanism, agricultural technology progress is an important channel for agricul

Developing a low-carbon economy plays an important role in China. This energy structure that relies too much on coal resources has become an important factor restricting the sustainable development of Chinas economy and society. Therefore, developing a low-carbon economy can effectively avoid the drawbacks of Chinas reliance on high carbon energy. However, there are many adverse effects and difficulties in exploring low-carbon energy. This paper analyzes the multi-dimensional impact of over-reliance on high-carbon energy on the structural adjustment of the energy industry, less developed areas

Based on a multi-regional input–output model, the trade embodied carbon transfers of bilateral trade between 185 countries/regions around the world were calculated. On the basis, regional trade embodied carbon transfer patterns and major national trade patterns in six continents, eight major economic cooperation organizations, and six representative countries/regions were further analyzed. Agricultural product trade openness is a crucial factor impacting agricultural carbon emissions. This study analyzes the relationship between trade openness and carbon emissions in China. Using panel data from 2002 to 2020 for 31 provinces, a threshold panel model is employed to examine the non-linear relationship from an environmental regulation perspective. The findings reveal a significant single-threshold effect of environmental regulation. When environmental regulation intensity is low, trade openness is positively associated with agricultural carbon emissions. However, when environmental

This article proposes that the function of trade rules with respect to low-carbon technology diffusion should be to address the identified market-related barriers preventing cross-border dispersion of the necessary technologies. By doing so, it seeks to expand the discussion in the WTO regarding trade, technology transfer, and climate change beyond the traditional confines of intellectual property issues. To that effect, it outlines a new framework against the normative background of Common Concern of Humankind, an emerging legal doctrine. This is further followed by highlighting the key areas

One important motivation for creating cap-and-trade programs for carbon emissions is the expectation that they will stimulate much-needed low-carbon innovation. I construct a new panel of British firms to investigate this hypothesis, finding that the European carbon market has encouraged greater low-carbon patenting and R&D spending among regulated firms without necessarily driving short-term reductions in carbon intensity of output. This stands in contrast to past cap-and-trade programs, which have primarily spurred adoption of existing pollution control technologies, with little effect o
