AbstractDuncan Pritchard has argued that luck is fundamentally a modal notion: an event is lucky when it occurs in the actual world, but does not occur in more than half of the relevant nearby possible worlds. Jennifer Lackey has provided counterexamples to accounts which, like Pritchard's, only allow for the existence of improbable lucky events. Neil Levy has responded to Lackey by offering a modal account of luck which attempts to respect the intuition that some lucky events occur in more than half of the relevant nearby possible worlds. But his account rejects that events which are as likel

There is a widely shared belief in contemporary epistemology that propositional knowledge is incompatible with certain kinds of luck, most of all with so called veritic luck. A subject is veritically lucky in his or her belief that p if this belief is true not due to its foundations (for example, reasons which an agent has to believe that p) but by mere accident. The acceptance of the thesis of incompatibility of knowledge with this kind of luck led to significant modifications of a popular modern epistemological tripartite analysis of propositional knowledge according to which subject knows t

Subjective experiences of good or bad luck appear to depend upon downward or upward comparisons with close counterfactuals. People exposed to disasters have both options: They were at the wrong place at the wrong time, but their fate could in many cases have been worse; so in a sense, they are unlucky victims, but lucky survivors. Interviews with 85 Norwegian tourists 9–11 months after they had been exposed to the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia showed good luck to be a pivotal theme in a majority of the narratives. Nobody claimed they had been unfortunate or unlucky. Moreover, downward cou

The idea that knowledge as an individual mental attitude with certain propositional content is not only true justified belief but a belief the truth of which does not result from any kind of luck, is widely spread in contemporary epistemology. The second presents definitions of coincidence. This part also presents the arguments which of the presented meanings of coincidence can be used in the analysis of the problem of moral luck. In conclusion, there is a suggestion to limit the meaning and role of the so-called paradox of moral luck.

Given that prominent renditions of virtue epistemology assume the reductive model, however, such a move is not straightforward—work needs to be done to elucidate what is wrong with the reductive model, in general, and why reductive accounts of virtue epist

In the process of cognitive-discursive analysis, the ethno-cultural component of the concept is expressed, which makes it possible to determine the specifics of the concept of "happiness" in the ethnic linguistic picture of the world. Using information from various authoritative sources that report about phraseological units, to establish semantic and functional correspondences of phraseological units with the concept of "happiness" and divide them into appropriate semant

Abstract The presence of conductive and extended heterogeneous features not connected to the wellbore and located beyond the investigation depths of standard characterization tools can be the reason for unexpected loss of net pressure during stimulation treatments due to the hydraulic fracture breakthrough into these heterogeneous areas. In current field practice, if such breakthrough occurs, it is considered as bad luck without the possibility of the quantitative analysis. This mindset can be changed in favor of the stimulation and reservoir management success using an approach that ties the

Abstract Geosteering workflows are increasingly based on updated quantifications of subsurface uncertainties during real-time operations. These workflows give tremendous amounts of information that a human brain cannot make sense of. To advance value creation from geosteering, the industry should develop and adopt decision support systems (DSSs). DSSs might provide either expert tools which inform decisions under uncertainty or optimization-based recommendations. In both cases the adoption of a DSS would require new skillsets to dynamically and systematically interpret uncertainties and parame

This paper analyzes claims that the Federal Reserve is principally responsible for the decline of inflation in the U.S. We compare several different quantitative approaches. These show that at most the Fed could plausibly claim credit for somewhere between twenty and forty percent of the decline. The paper then examines claims by central bankers and their supporters that a steadfast Fed commitment to keeping inflationary expectations anchored played a key role in the process. The paper shows that it did not. The Fed’s own surveys show that low-income Americans did not believe assurances from t

A new tool, LUCI, has been developed as part of the Locacons Project to determine the broader impacts of development interventions. Knowledge of how and where interventions may create unintended consequences is crucial for all sectors; however, in communities with a history of conflict, in particular, unintended impacts of interventions have been shown to be significant contributors to the exacerbation of conflict potential. Estimates show that two-thirds of the world’s poor will live in fragile and conflict-affected states by 2030. The LUCI tool can be useful in many contexts. The authors pre

The CHDN began monitoring landbirds in 2010 and now has monitoring data in all parks for the breeding seasons of 2010?2016 (except 2015), as well as 2017 for Big Bend NP. Our intention for monitoring landbirds extends beyond the birds themselves, and includes a broader vision of landbirds as indicators of the ecosystems they inhabit. This dual purpose influenced our sampling design, especially in light of funding and logistical limitations. We sampled primarily in two habitat classes in the CHDN: grassland (upland) and riparian. De?pending on park size, we used two approaches to allocate surve

This article examines the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on the main actors of the populist radical right in France (i.e., Marine Le Pen’s Rassemblement National and Éric Zemmour’s Reconquête) as well as Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s La France insoumise on the populist radical left. It looks, in particular, at the effects of the Ukraine crisis on the French presidential election in April 2022. After the outbreak of the war, French populists (of the left and the right) came under fire for their pro-Russia positions and previous sympathy for Vladimir Putin. However, these parties revealed quit
