This thesis examines some selective cases of morphophonemic alternation in Mandarin Chinese. It presents analyses of the function -of the retroflex suffix -r and describes several conditions for tone sandhi. The suffix -r functions not simply as a noun formative. Some of the suffixed forms have consistently different meanings from the roots on which they are based. Modal concord is a semantic phenomenon in which multiple modal words in a sentence are interpreted semantically as if there was only a single modal expression. This thesis examines some of the major aspects of the semantic and syntactic characteristics of 'shang' and 'xia' in Mandarin Chinese. One of their basic meanings relates to the vertical dimension, both 'shang' and 'xia, being involved in the indication of vertical direction and position. It is seen that this vertical dimension can extend into the realms of quantity, status, sequencing and time. This dissertation discusses the Xining Mandarin dialect (spoken in Qinghai province, northwest China), a variety in which head-final syntax has emerged on the model of local Mongolic languages and Tibetan. The underlying socio-historical scenario is explored in detail and analysed as a case of 'fort creolization' (Bickerton 1988). This thesis examines the syntactic properties of passive constructions in Mandarin Chinese within the framework of Government and Binding. The theoretical framework of analyzing passives is that of Baker, Johnson and Roberts (1989, henceforth BJR) and Hale and Keyser (1993). It is argued that what could be and should be analyzed as a passive in Mandarin Chinese is the construction characterized by the presence of bei, hence the so- called Jbei-construct ion.
