OF DIFFERENT MANUFACTURES It was established that spectroscopic and chromatographic methods of analyzing were used to determine sucralose. Given that the spectroscopic method of analysis requires specific preparation of samples is insufficiently accurate and sensitive, and the chromatographic method is expensive, the electro-analytical method of determination was chosen for the research. This is justified by the structure of the molecule (it contains functional groups that can be oxidized electrochemically). Electrochemical experiments were carried out using a potentiostat-galvanostat on a three-electrode setup with a glassy carbon electrode as a working electrode, a platinum electrode as an auxiliary electrode and a silver chloride electrode for comparison. The study utilized non-carbonated beverages Continente (Portugal) and Xixo (Hungary), as well as carbonated beverages Sumol Zero (Portugal) and Fanta Shokata (Ukraine). The manufacturer indicated the presence of sucralose in all of them. Based on the conducted research and corresponding calculations, it was established that the beverages are safe for consumption. Natural processes of photo-, photoelectro-, and electrodegradation in soil and wastewater reduce the problems of sucralose accumulation in the environment. Therefore, to prevent diffusion to the anode space with the release of gaseous chlorine, membrane electrolysis is applied (the membrane is made of polyvinylpyridine), which separates the cathode and anode spaces and does not allow chloride ions to reach the anode. In this case, water electrolysis or electrooxidation of hydroxyl ions occurs at the anode with the formation of gaseous oxygen. Electroanalytical determination of sucralose was also conducted using the method of cyclic voltammetry. The fact that the electrochemical determination of sucralose took place can be judged by a gradual but sharp increase in the current value at certain potential values. In this case, the intensity of this increase depends on the concentration of the sweetener. A solution with a neutral pH level was used as the background electrolyte. Materials based on carbon (graphite, carbon nanotubes) were used as the working electrode. We proposed a new method for determining sucralose, associated with the dependence of the peak current value during its electrochemical oxidation on the concentration. At the same time, a linear relationship between the peak current value and the sweetener concentration is maintained.

Serra da Estrela is the oldest and most recognizable traditional protected designation of origin (PDO) cheese from Portugal. It has been extensively studied over the years, but the latest microbial characterization is 20 years old. Hence, this work aimed to perform an updated characterization of Serra da Estrela PDO cheeses and raw materials. Our analysis showed that lactic acid bacteria content on Serra da Estrela cheeses exceeded 8.8 log CFUsg−1, in all analyzed samples, with lactococci, lactobacilli and Leuconostoc spp. predominating over enterococci strains. Moreover, lactococci and lactobacilli abundance increased across the production season, while enterococci dropped considerably in late manufactures. Lastly, Leuconostoc spp. content remained unchanged in all analyzed periods. A correspondence analysis showed that L. paracasei, L. lactis, E. durans, E. faecium and L. mesenteroides are transversal in Serra da Estrela cheese manufacturing and were closely associated with milk, curd and cheese matrices. Additionally, L. casei, L. plantarum and L. curvatus were specifically associated with cheese matrices, possibly active during ripening and contributing for the development of these cheeses’ organoleptic characteristics.

Purpose The purposes of this paper are to explore the effects of brand credibility, brand familiarity and brand image on brand attachment and brand attitude; and to test how a grocery product category and the perception of quality of own-label brands vs manufacturer brands moderate the inter-relationship of brand credibility, brand familiarity and brand image on brand attachment and brand attitude. Design/methodology/approach A survey is administered to a quota sample of Portuguese supermarket shoppers via a face-to-face personal interviewing method. The survey was conducted in Lisbon, Amadora and Sintra. The three municipalities were chosen for being the most densely populated and for having the largest number of grocery retailers in Portugal. From a total of 800 questionnaires collected using a face-to-face personal interviewing method in low-, medium- and high-peak shopping days, 756 were usable for data analysis. The respondents’ profile is according to the last Censos in Portugal conducted by the National Statistical Institute of Portugal, representing a quota sample. Findings Credibility and familiarity seem to be more important to enhance attachment in the case of the manufacturer brands and image for retailer own-brands. Brand image is more effective in attach customer in the case of manufacturer brands. Grocery store (supermarket) brand managers should be more effective in communicating the extension of the store image to the image of the products; they should develop a consistent and differentiating brand image. Originality/value This paper provides an important contribution to supermarket retail service by shedding light about how consumers’ overall evaluation and attachment to a brand are affected by the grocery product category and the perception of the quality of an own-label brand vs a manufacturer brand.

So far, very few studies have focused on the quantification of the environmental impacts of a wave energy converter. The current study presents a preliminary Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the MegaRoller wave energy converter, aiming to contribute to decision making regarding the least carbon- and energy-intensive design choices. The LCA encompasses all life cycle stages from “cradle-to-grave” for the wave energy converter, including the panel, foundation, PTO and mooring system, considering its deployment in Peniche, Portugal. Background data was mainly sourced from the manufacturer whereas foreground data was sourced from the Ecoinvent database (v.3.4). The resulting impact assessment of the MegaRoller is aligned with all previous studies in concluding that the main environmental impacts are due to materials use and manufacture, and mainly due to high amounts of material used, particularly steel. The scenario analysis showed that a reduction of the environmental impacts in the final design of the MegaRoller wave energy converter could potentially lie in reducing the quantity of steel by studying alternatives for its replacement. Results are generally comparable with earlier studies for ocean technologies and are very low when compared with other power generating technologies.

The study aims to examine the financial efficiency of the textile and clothing industries in Portugal using official statistical data. The main objective is to assess the relationship between spending on research and development and return on assets. The study analyzes the performance of various subsectors of the textile and clothing industries, presenting the relationship between investments in research and development and the operating return on assets over various economic periods. The study adopted data envelopment analysis, classifying decision-making units based on average efficiency levels. The results highlight sectors of manufacture of textiles for technical and industrial use, manufacture of other textiles, production of outerwear, and manufacture of workwear as the most efficient. In contrast, sectors of manufacture of clothing and accessories, manufacture of knitwear, and leather clothing show lower levels of efficiency. From 2003 to 2022, the textile industry exhibited the highest levels of financial efficiency, with an above-average ratio between spending on research and development and return on assets. However, sectors of knitwear manufacturing and textile finishing have maintained a more or less constant level of financial efficiency. The analysis highlights the need for targeted interventions to increase the financial efficiency of different subsectors within the textile and clothing industries. It is evident that there are varying levels of financial efficiency across these sectors, and the need for benchmarking periods can help identify areas for improvement and set achievable goals. Fábrica de Loiça de Sacavém (ca. 1858–1994) was among the first to produce white earthenware in Portugal, becoming one of the country’s leading ceramic manufacturers during the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Research on white earthenware has accompanied the growing interest in post-industrial archaeology but is still poorly explored compared to more ancient ceramic productions. This study focused on the ceramic body, glazes, and colourants of tableware produced by Fábrica de Loiça de Sacavém during the first 50 years of its activity (1859–1910). A multi-analytical approach was selected to investigate the chemical and mineralogical composition of the ceramic body, glaze, and pigments using optical microscopy, variable-pressure scanning electron microscope energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (VP-SEM-EDS), μ-Raman spectroscopy, μ-X-ray Diffraction (μ-XRD), and reflectance spectroscopy (hyperspectral image analysis). The studied tableware was produced with a Ca-poor siliceous–aluminous white earthenware ceramic body covered with transparent alkali lead or lead borosilicate glaze, and most colourants were complex Cr-based pigments. These results are in agreement with the little documental evidence from this period found in the manufacturer’s archives.

The purpose of this work was to study foreign experience in pharmacy manufacture and quality control of medicinal preparations (MP). Scientific literature and internet sources analysis, the author's own observations from 2005 to 2020 were made. It has been established that pharmacy manufacture of MPs abroad is carried out for the special needs of patients when pharmaceutical industry cannot produce them for various reasons. There are various approaches to standardization of the number of manufacturing pharmacies abroad: from complete prohibition of pharmacy manufacture of medicinal preparations in Portugal to mandatory license requirement in Austria and Germany. To manufacture medicinal preparations at a pharmacy the laboratory is established where necessary equipment, inventory, pharmaceutical substances and excipients are placed and the technological process is carried out. Pharmacy manufacture of sterile medicinal preparations is conducted under aseptic conditions in a specially equipped room or in a laminar-airflow cabinet. MPs must not be registered in most countries of the world. In the US and the European Union (EU) medicinal preparations are classified into medicines for immediate use and for prolonged storage. Expiration date must be stated for prolonged storage medicinal preparations, a dossier is made for them in the EU pharmacies. Pharmacies in most countries of the world manufacture medicinal preparations from tablets and capsules. Much attention abroad is given to ensure the quality of pharmacy manufacture of medicinal preparations: in the US, pharmacy manufacture of medicinal preparations is carried out in accordance with the requirements of Pharmacopoeia, in the EU according to the EU Council Resolution. A number of countries have developed guidelines or standard operational procedures for pharmacy manufacture of medicinal preparations. Constant training and assessment of employees’ competencies engaged in pharmacy manufacture of medicinal preparations is performed.

This clay is believed to be the raw material used to manufacture the Iron Age and Roman fine grey pottery from Conímbriga. The differences observed in the chemical and mineralogical compositions of the clay samples and of different size fractions are consistent with the high variance found in the compositional group corresponding to that archaeological site.

This thesis examines how product portfolios shape emission productivity within the manufacturing sector, questioning policy frameworks that aim to achieve decarbonization primarily through efficiency increases. Using firm-level data from the Portuguese manufacturing sector (2004-2021), it explores heterogeneity in emission intensities within narrowly defined industries and assesses the impact of product composition on firm-level emission productivity. By integrating administrative records on energy consumption, financial data, and product-level sales, the study quantifies the extent to which variations in product portfolios contribute to differences in emission intensity. The findings reveal that firms within the same industry exhibit substantial variation in emission productivity, often exceeding inter-industry differences. Variance decomposition analysis confirms that a significant share of this heterogeneity is explained by firm-level factors rather than sector-wide characteristics. A classification of products into high- and low-emission categories indicates that firms producing a greater share of low-emission goods tend to have systematically higher emission productivity. Through index decomposition analysis and firm-level panel regressions, the study further examines whether adjustments in product portfolios influence firm-level emission intensities over time. The results suggest that aggregate emission reductions have been largely driven by efficiency gains, yet firms that transition toward lower-emission products show sustained improvements in emission productivity. These findings contribute to debates on industrial decarbonization by emphasizing the role of product portfolios alongside efficiency improvements. While technological advancements play a key role, the study highlights how decarbonization strategies that focus solely on efficiency gains may overlook the structural impact of production composition. The results also raise policy questions regarding the extent to which regulatory frameworks encourage or constrain shifts toward lower-emission products. By engaging with perspectives from ecological economics and democratic planning, this thesis offers insights into whether market-driven adjustments alone are sufficient or whether additional regulatory measures are needed to facilitate structural changes in industrial production

Business mcmaging styles induced by nowadays main económica! and social trends impact on ali firm-related leveis and hring to consideration the contribution from each operational activity to the global performance of the organizations. In such context, this study analyses industrial maintenance outsourcing at the Portuguese manufacture of basic chemicals industry and proposes a framework to manage its scope. Firm 's strategies in this industry are mainly based on production costs. Thus, industrial maintenance, usually dose related to production because of its contribution to plant availahility, becomes more relevant since several hw cost production requirements demand good equipments' maintenance condition. To reduce its own costs, industrial maintenance has developed many internai procedures which, in spite of lheir notorious contribution, do not fully respond either to this activity's seasonal workload or to its human resources rationalization. Therefore, industrial maintenance outsourcing, mainly perceived as an alternative to optimize these aspects, through capacities and competencies flexibility, deserves to be analyzed. This study's conclusions strongly recommend avoiding the application of a generic outsourcing strategy to ali industrial maintenance activities at the Portuguese manufacture of basic chemicals industry. To improve outsourcing approach, industrial maintenance activities' characteristics should be properly distinguished through their groupage into several typologies. Their subsequent analysis suggests that, in addition to industrial maintenance direct costs reduction, knowledge existing in each firm 's interna! resources should also be considered whenever defining outsourcing strategies. The strict quantitative analysis that usually sustains outsourcing decisions may dangerously neglect internai knowledge 's outstanding capability to generate immaterial benefits.

Annotation:
This case study deals with the reasons why the Portuguese Footwear Cluster evolved from a small industry focused on the Portuguese internal market into a high-tech industry capable of designing and producing some of the best and most expensive shoes in the world. It went from using the low labor costs of an under-developed economy to produce long series of shoes for pre-designated brands in Northern Europe to having the ability to produce some of the highest quality shoes in the world, in small orders, designed and delivered in record timing, while offering a service of excellence. In 1960, when Portugal became a founding member of EFTA, the footwear industry in Portugal was globally irrelevant, producing low quality shoes directed to the puny internal market and its African colonies. The new free trade zone with economies much more developed that itself, led to the transfer of the labor-intensive, low skilled manufacture from the UK and Scandinavian countries to Portugal. Mostly through joint ventures, the industry was able to mechanize itself so it could produce shoes in long series at low prices. It grew based on that model up until the 1990s, when the emergence of the Asian countries meant either a different strategy or extinction. Taking advantage of a clarified leadership of its trade association, it used the European funds made available to it during the 1990s, to modernize its factory floors, so it could become more nimble and flexible, expand its design capabilities and dramatically change its image abroad. The role of the trade association, APICCAPS, was instrumental throughout the process going well beyond what came to be expected of trade associations. It used its privileged position to provide understanding regarding the current situation and competitive landscape, alerting for changes ahead and at the same time providing a strategic vision on how to deal with the challenges. Moreover, it helped companies get the resources they needed by creating a research center in collaboration with a University, by creating a process that allowed companies to learn from each other via the show casing of projects sponsored by the association or by helping industrials traveling to locations where new customers could be found. The case study provides insight on how the trade association leadership, which has no formal authority over its members, was able to guide and motivate an industry through a consistent positive approach. That approach focused on the solutions, on the opportunities and on the success stories of companies in the cluster rather than on what was wrong or needed to be addressed. Based on this case, one could use the leadership role of the trade association to discuss and change leaders’ roles and styles in other sectors or even companies.

The realization of an archaeological intervention of diagnosis and heritage safeguard, in Santa Joana avenue, Aveiro, in the biennium of 2017-18, allowed the establishment of a ceramic collection so far without known parallels in the city. From anthropic landfill deposits and negative structures, the ceramic collection is part of a storm line between the 9th and the 13th century. It consists of domestic pottery such as pans, pots, bowls and jars. Fragments with pastes resulting from different manufactures and plastic decorative grammars like punched and structed motifs.

At the end of the XX century, the archaeological survey carried out at the Bom Jesus de Gaia church, gave rise to another point of history in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia , with the survey of a wide archaeological collection dating back since the V/VI century, to the modern times. Until now, the collected materials were only superficially studied, just to provide the first results of the excavations. As such a study a little more in depth was needed. In that sense we present here a study on the late roman pottery, the late grey ceramics, that is, the manufactures of late utilitarian ceramics from the church of Bom Jesus de Gaia, also enclosing the study of late glass, an equally versatile material and still a lot less studied.

The recent expansion of Portuguese exports can not only promote post crisis recovery but also accelerate economic growth if the theoretical predictions on the relationship between exports and growth are correct. The export-led growth hypothesis advocates that export expansion is key in promoting long run performance. However, controversies remain on the causal relationship between the variables. We investigate this nexus for Portugal over the period 1970-2012 by estimating a bivariate VAR model with output and exports and applying cointegration, Granger causality and impulse response analysis. The results show a long-run equilibrium relationship between exports and output supporting the export-led-growth hypothesis. We also investigated the growth impact of exports of manufactured and non-manufactured products. The findings point to the existence of a positive impact of manufactured exports on output and a “limiting” effect of non-manufactured exports supporting in this way the view that what a country exports matters for growth.

The Wool Museum, located in Covilhã, was founded in 1992 and has kept a close relationship with archaeology since then. The 18th Century Dye-House structures of the Royal Textile Factory were exposed in 1975 and with their discovery began an important project for conservation and safeguarding, which played an important role in Portuguese Industrial Archaeology. In view of its mission to publicize the textile industry and heritage, an extensive program with public activities has been developed over the years, such as workshops, lectures, and temporary exhibitions. However, these activities were mainly focused on wool manufacture and textile tradition. Considering the limited events related to archaeology, in 2019 began a project to introduce the archeological theme in the museum activities plan.

In this paper, we present a detailed examination of a sword dating from the Southwestern Middle Bronze Age, which was found several years ago during farming activities near the town of Serpa, Portugal. The sword was apparently found out of an archaeological context. The finder of the sword, who kindly allowed us to study it, cleaned the artefact of its corrosion and kept it in good conditions. The sword is about 50 cm long and its handle show two rivets (another one is missing) which are kept housed in notches. The rivets’ heads are spherical caps covered with a golden leaf. The use of a p-EDXRF equipment allowed us to determine and quantify the elemental composition of the blade, as well as of the golden leaf covering the rivet heads. It was thus possible to establish that the blade was manufactured with arsenical copper, while the composition of the golden leaf refers to a natural alloy. Finally, the Monte das Oliveiras sword is compared with several other coeval examples of Southern Iberia weaponry. Its hilt design, namely the three peripheral notches, seems to be of an unique variant in swords, being relatively rare in similarly shaped weapons, such as daggers.

Abstract International comparisons of pharmaceutical prices are playing an increasing role in public policy toward the pharmaceutical industry. Many countries including Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Canada refer to prices of drugs in other countries when setting allowable prices in their own country. In the United States, the Congress and many other consumer organizations have been eager to know if U.S. drug prices are higher than those in other industrial countries. Although earlier studies (e.g., Reekie 1984, Schut and Van Bergeijk 1986, Szuba 1986, Pharmacy Freedom Fund 1990, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS] 1990) have indicated that prescription drug prices are generally higher in the United States than in foreign countries, these studies have been criticized for methodological shortcomings, leading some to discount their conclusions. In the early 1990s, the Congress requested the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to compare ex-manufacturer prices in the United States to those of drugs sold in Canada and the United Kingdom. The GAO found significant price differences at the manufacturers’ level between the United States and these other countries. In fact, all frequently dispensed prescription drugs included in their analyses were priced higher in the United States than they were in the United Kingdom and Canada. The GAO reports had an explosive effect on both the Congress and the pharmaceutical industry. Upon receiving the first report on the U.S.-Canada comparison in early 1992, a hearing was immediately held before the Subcommittee on Health and the Environment of the Committee on Energy and Commerce in the House of Representatives. Legislative bills targeted at regulating prescription drug prices were proposed at once, including the Prescription Drug Prices Review Board Act of 1993, sponsored by Congressman Fortney Stark (D-CA).

The main objective of this chapter is to define a set of strategic lines, from the public policy point of view, so that Portuguese suppliers of the auto industry can deploy a strategic alignment throughout the supply chain in order to position themselves as potential suppliers of the global sourcing strategy of their Iberian Peninsula clients. The characterization of the auto industry in Portugal and Spain is undertaken, framing the perspective of this industry and proposing the strategic guidelines for the Portuguese auto components industry to supply the Iberian market. The study supports a synergistic strategy between the Portuguese auto components industry and the Spanish automotive industry in order to increase the Portuguese incorporation in downstream activities of the supply chain. Portuguese auto components suppliers should adopt international relational strategies throughout the value chain in order to source their Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) clients and to reinforce their position as global suppliers. The strategy involves the consolidation of the Portuguese automotive cluster as global suppliers through specialization.

This chapter examines the history of regulating recreational drugs in the USA, UK and Australia. It shows that the criminalization of recreational drugs is a relatively recent phenomenon, based not on citizen welfare but on fears that drugs affect the nation’s ability to wage war, whilst some early legislation was openly racist. It argues that the continued justification of drug criminalization is moralistic and has racist underpinnings. It suggests that whilst the social problems of recreational drug use are serious, they are no more serious than those of alcohol or gambling, and legalization has many advantages over continued criminalization. It examines the results of drug decriminalization in Portugal, and the likely practicality and social effects should recreational drugs be legalized. It argues that such legalization would also require careful regulation, much as we have for drugs manufactured for medical purposes. It compares the policy stance of governments on recreational drugs to that on the other issues discussed in this book.

Most car manufacturers are increasingly looking to invest in autonomous driving technology, incorporating driver assistance functions with the aim of improving the safety of their products. Even though more and more vehicles are equipped with driver-assistance technologies, the idea of the vehicle itself performing the driving function completely makes most drivers fearful. A study was therefore carried out, applied to the Portuguese context, with the aim of studying the acceptance of this technology. An explanatory model was used, which incorporates dimensions from the technology acceptance model (TAM) and the main factors that contribute to technology acceptance were also identified. The results contribute to understanding the determinants of autonomous driving technology adoption.

In the current framework of Industry 4.0 technological transformations, the viewpoint of those who integrate the workplaces being transformed is frequently dismissed. Therefore, this paper explores decision-makers’ views concerning such changes and their impacts, considering they also have the power to act on how these processes are employed. The study was developed at an automotive manufacturer in Portugal, through 26 semi-structured interviews. Our findings come to show the decision-makers’ perspectives regarding how work is organized, their own operational leeway to manage new work demands stemming from the human-technology interaction, and the perceived impacts of technological change. These results shed light on how technological introduction interacts with the daily conflict to manage productivity and quality demands with health and well-being at work. This will support the next phases of the research, which will include workers from different areas of the company.

The use of earthenware vessels became widespread among all social strata in Portugal from the second half of the 16th century on. Besides the plain púcaros (drinking cups), there are other elaborate profile exquisite pieces, truly something of a novelty back then, in what refined earthenware is concerned. Among these, we highlight the drinking vessels with skillful decoration in high relief, for the sake of their strong aesthetic and artistic appeal. Here are presented some samples of artifacts exhumed in Coimbra and Aveiro, in well dated contexts from the 2nd half of the 16th century. The most emblematic item within this notorious ceramic production was collected at Coimbra’s Santa Cruz monastery, bearing the engraved date of 1558. In this work we try to emphasise the Renaissance origin of this manufacture, which is still barely referred among the Modern Age luxury tableware.

The fashion industry market is intrinsically dynamic and mutable. Emerging trends lead consumers and industry to a mindset transformation, through a deep shift in the paradigms of creation, production, and acquisition. The footwear industry recognizes the potential of this reality, focusing on the development of innovative strategies based on collaborative mass customization. In Portugal, despite footwear being a mature industry, it is necessary to continuously invest in innovation-based competitiveness. Thus, based on two surveys, one addressed to a group of seven Portuguese manufacturers (with no mass customization experience), and the other to a group of three Portuguese experts (specialized in footwear customization), critical information about expectations versus reality was gathered. The main objective was to obtain specific and exhaustive data, based on qualitative elements. In this way, it is aimed to contribute to the theoretical reflection of the collaborative design applied to the customization of footwear based on the overview of the Portuguese industry.

Food processing represents the effective commodity physical transformation; besides that, it is an opportunity in the value-chain from farmers to high-end manufacturers. Many factors influence the evolution of this food sector, but one of the most important one is represented by the continuous development of consumers demand for healthier and cleaner food. The current paper aimed at showing the importance of the processing sector in the food chain. The current paper has noted various remarks about the food processing sector for Romania and other European Member States: Greece, Croatia, Latvia, Hungary, Poland, and Portugal as these states have comparable GDP/capita levels to Romania and has also briefed the respective crop and animal production levels using international databases as information source. The present study has highlighted the importance of the processing sector. As the value added from the agricultural industry has constantly improved in Romania’s case, it could have been observed from the available data that processing has generated more revenue for both the farms and for the whole industry.

Industrial demand has changed and present increasingly demanding requirements. Companies need to evolve and innovate to be able to go along and fulfill its customers requirements. Currently, major players have the capacity, resources and money, to install the most innovate and expensive machines, tools and devices on its shop-floor. SMEs on its side, face several challenges to manage its limited resources. SME aims to maximize the usage of the available resources to continue its activity and if possible to grow. The usage of low-cost IoT devices allow companies to monitor the usage of its resources and the quality of its products without the need to made a huge investment that wouldn’t be affordable for them. The results presented were a result of the C2NET Project that was designed to comprehensively cover the entire supply chain considering all stages of manufacturing, distribution and sales to supply a product to market. The results achieved were able to fulfill specific needs of the industrial partners of the project, and were validated by 6 companies from Automative, DermoCosmetics, Metalworking and OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Industries from Spain, France, Portugal and Finland.[1] A Metalworking SME was used as an use case due to its complexity and diversity, although most of the achievements can be replicated in other industries, even the more traditional ones.

Abstract Due to increased energy demands and environmental concerns, biomass has become an increasingly attractive primary source in the energy mix. It can be used as heat supply to both domestic and industrial sectors, but also as fuel in dedicated or co-generation-based power plants and it is also considered CO2 neutral. Amongst the most widely used formats, wood pellets are very attractive because of their standardized properties which makes them efficient over a wide range of applications. In Portugal alone, over 1 million tons a year are produced. However, due to their attractiveness, the pressure on traditional raw materials for their fabrication (saw dust) has driven the cost upwards and induced bottlenecks upstream in the supply chain. One way to expand the range of raw materials is to combine a biomass based matrix with alien materials into the same pellet format. In this way one can also find alternative uses for other materials which, some of them wastes, are often dumped into landfills. Such an approach has been pursued into combining industrial wastes with biomass in pellets. This project concerns the evaluation of the combustion behavior of saw dust based pellets fortified with pyrolysis bio-oils produced from waste vegetable oils. The bio-oil is an organic liquid obtained by pyrolysis of used vegetable sunflower oil, at 420 °C and 10 min. The pellets were manufactured with pine saw dust with bio-oil incorporation up to 5% in mass. The resulting pellets were fully characterized for their properties, including the heating value, which increased when compared with standard saw dust pellets. These pellets were afterward tested in a fully instrumented 20 kW fixed grate combustion facility. The flue gases were analyzed and the resulting ashes were tested for their chemical composition in order to assess their ability to melt during combustion. The results show that this route can be beneficial in terms of exhaust emissions, including promoting the reduction of NOx during combustion. However, the physical characteristics of the pellets have some restrictions, since they do not meet minimum requirements for its certification ENplus level of density, mechanical durability and fines content.
