Mean sea level is a significant phenomenon in geodetic science and oceanography. The sea level has experienced an unprecedented rise recently, and this increase can be attributed to the various human-induced activities (anthropogenic factors) ranging from deforestation to burning of fossil fuels and population increase. Several factors cause sea level rise, it has been identified that the thermal expansion of ocean water and the melting of glaciers add to the volume of water causing global sea level to rise, whereas phenomena such as ocean current, wind, pressure are responsible for the region

Abstract. The objective of the present paper was to determine a first approximation of coastal zone flooding by 2100, taking into account the more persistent processes of sea level variability and non-accelerated linear sea level rise estimation to assess the main impacts. The annual linear rate of mean sea level rise in the Cuban archipelago, obtained from the longest tide gauge records, has fluctuated between 0.005 cm/year at Casilda and 0.214 cm/year at Siboney. The main sea level rise effects for the Cuban coastal zone due to climate change and global warming are shown. Monthly and annual

Abstract We propose to establish a new ocean observing system for monitoring global and regional mean sea-level changes. This system will consist of a global array of thousands of water-following drifting buoys tracked by a global navigation satellite system—such as the Global Positioning System (GPS)—which will continuously provide the geographical positions and the height of the sea surface along the buoys' trajectories. The sea-level height data collected in this way, averaged over regional basins and the global ocean, will provide daily measures of regional and global mean sea levels. An e

Abstract. Recent assessments from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) imply that global mean sea level is unlikely to rise more than about 1.1 m within this century but will increase further beyond 2100. Even within the most intensive future anthropogenic greenhouse gas emission scenarios, higher levels are assessed to be unlikely. However, some studies conclude that considerably greater sea level rise could be realized, and a number of experts assign a substantially higher likelihood of such a future. To understand this discrepancy, it would be useful to have scenario-indepen

Global-mean surface temperature change during the twentieth century is well reproduced. Simulated contributions to global-mean sea level rise during recent decades due to thermal expansion (the largest term) and to mass loss from glaciers and ice caps agree within uncertainties with observational estimates of these terms, but their sum falls short of the observed rate of sea level rise. During the Cretaceous, the CO2 content of the global atmosphere increased in response to the volcanism associated with the disintegration of the former continents. This led to a considerable rise in global temperatures, leading to a significant rise in the global sea level and the landward movement of coastlines. Cretaceous marine strata transgressed directly on the underlying basement or much older sedimentary strata. Extreme environmental conditions in the Cretaceous involved a possibly more acidic and chemically destructive atmosphere than at present, which favoured widespread deep weatheri

AbstractVietnam has approximately 5600 km of coastline and is among the countries most vulnerable to future sea level rise (SLR). In terms of risk of inundation and affected population, Vietnam is one of the countries most at risk from climate change (MONRE 2016; Tamura et al. 2019). According to tide gauge readings, mean sea level increased 2.45 mm/year between 1960 and 2014; satellite data indicates a 3.50 ± 0.7 mm/year rise between 1993 and 2014 (MONRE 2016). Rising global sea levels are among the most salient hazards caused by global warming, as nearly 900 million people globally live in exposed coastal areas. This exposure necessitates the development of coastal risk management strategies. The efficacy of such strategies relies on sound projections of future global climate, including sea levels. Sovereignty projected out to sea is, in essence, the claim by coastal States to extend their exclusive control over the adjacent sea. The test used case sea level rise to develop case studies on long-term planning by local government and society as a means t

A non-reflective SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) wave flume is developed to study wave transformation over the deep-sea platform reef with a steep reef-face. The left and right boundaries of the flume are modeled using the periodic boundary conditions and a water circulation technology, and a momentum source wave maker is applied to generate the required wave. Wave transformation over the reef-flat is analyzed and compared with the experimental data. The results show that the present SPH model can effectively overcome the non-physical rise of the mean water level in the lagoon and over t

To meet the demands of high electrical efficiencies in combination with low emissions for gas turbine-based power plants, wet cycles have gained new interest. The combustion chamber is a key component in such a power plant. Detailed investigations are necessary to gain insight into the formation of hazardous emissions such as CO and NOx. In this paper, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been employed to perform the investigations. To examine the influence of humidity content in the inlet air stream on the mean flame position and CO and NOx emissions, the humidity content was varied from 0

Storm surges and wind waves are ones of the most important hydrological characteristics, which determine dynamics of the Sea of Azov. Extreme storm surges in Taganrog Bay and flooding in the Don Delta can be formed under the effect of strong western winds. In this work the sea level oscillations and wind waves in the Taganrog Bay were simulated by means of the coupled SWAN+ADCIRC numerical model, taking into account the flooding and drying mechanisms. The calculations were carried out on an unstructured mesh with high resolution. The wind and atmospheric pressure fields for the extreme storm f

Global mean sea levels have risen at an accelerating rate over the past century in response, primarily to greenhouse gas emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels. We use MAGICC7, a reduced complexity climate-carbon cycle model, to quantify how emissions traced to the Carbon Majors, the world’s 122 largest fossil fuel and cement producers, from 1854-2020 contributed to present-day surface air temperature rise, and sea level rise both historically and projected through 2300. We find that emissions traced to these industrial actors have contributed 36-57% to present day surface air temperatu

The Met Office runs an operational storm surge forecast system for the UK based on a 7 km configuration of NEMO forced by wind and air pressure from Met Office global atmosphere forecasts. The water level forecast comprises the surge residual from the model added to the harmonic tide prediction derived from observations. A new automated bias correction has been added to the system to improve forecast performance. The correction has 3 components: a mean sea level correction to account for different mean sea levels in the forced and unforced model runs, a monthly correction to account for the at

This study examines the potential impact of sea level rise (SLR) caused by climate change on the effects of extratropical cyclones, also known as nor?easters, in four New England coastal parks: Acadia National Park (ACAD), Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area (BOHA), Boston National Historical Park (BOST) and Cape Cod National Seashore (CACO). A multi-method approach is employed, including a literature review, observational data analysis, coupled hydrodynamic-wave numerical modeling, 3D visualizations, and communication of findings. Tide gauges can capture sea level variability on multiple timescales, from high frequency events like waves, tides and tsunamis, to seasonal and interannual changes and the longer-term trends associated with Climate Change. However, financial constraints dictate that they are often maintained to lower standards than the stringent accuracy requirements demanded by the IOC-UNESCO’s Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS) for monitoring sea level rise. In addition, a sparsity of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers at the coast means that there are large uncertainties in rates of
