The distribution of liverworts and hornworts in Turkey has been described. The volatile components of the ether extracts of some selected Turkish, Spanish and French liverwort species, Corsinia coriandrina, Lejeunea lamacerina, Lunularia cruciata, Marchantia polymorpha, Metzgeria furcata, Pellia neesiana, Porella cordaeana, Porella platyphylla and Scapania undulata were analysed by GC-MS. C. coriandrina produces isothiocyanates and S,S-dimethyliminodithiocarbonates similar to those isolated from the marine hydroid, Tridentata marginata. The species also produces the characteristic 2-arylbenzofurans. L. lamacerina is closely related chemically to the Japanese Lejeunea aquatica, L. flava and L. japonica since it elaborates the same cuparene sesquiterpenoids as those found in the latter three species.

Annotation:
Estimation of changes in the microclimatic parameters of beech forests of the Stilsky Hillside, by measuring the water-temperature indicators of the soil regime and bryoindication, were performed. Fragmentation of forest causes significant changes in microclimatic parameters in bondary habitats areas, which leads to both biodiversity loss and a decrease of the unchanged forest areas. In fragmented beech forests, the influence of the edge effect on the water-temperature regime of soils is observed within a distance of 20-40 meters, but the eco-floristic structure of nemoral moss vegetation is stabilized only at a distance from 160 m. Thus, bryobiontes are a shown to be a sensitive marker of the microclimatic regime changes in a fragmented ecosystem. In the studied beeches Metzgeria furcata, Radula complanata, Anomodon attenuatus, A. viticulosus, Cirriphyllum crassinervium are indicators of the "interior forest". The determined amplitude of the edge effect indicates the fragmentation as a crucial factor on the small areas of forest and its role in the loss of climate-sensitive groups of biota, primarily mosses.

Summary In this article, classical writings of Kurt Lewin (1890-1947) and Wolfgang Metzger (1899-1979) concerning education for democracy and tolerance are presented. Starting with a definition of „group” and the discussion of the meaning of groups for the individual life, especially the experimental studies of Kurt Lewin, Ronald Lippitt and Raph K. White in 1937/38 on different group atmospheres under the influence of „democratic” vs. „autocratic” vs. „laissez faire” leading style are presented again, in order to give an example for the meaning of atmosphere influences on personal development, creativity and aggression – all topics concerning actual school situations and the daily experience of pupils and teachers. The collection of writings concerning education for democracy and tolerance include some of Lewin’s writings on minority problems and Metzger’s fundamental thougts on political education as a special application of productive thinking in Wertheimer’s sense. Some possibilities of how to change prejudices and to develop tolerance in Lewin’s and Metzger’s sense are presented. As a conclusion, some ideas for actual school life and possibilities to make pupils tolerant and able to participate actively in a democratic society are developed.

Annotation:
Epiphytic lichen communities with Lobaria pulmonaria are described and two new associations are distinguished in the Southern Urals. Communities of the ass. Anaptychio ciliaris—Lobarietum pulmonariae (diagnostic species: Anaptychia ciliaris, Bacidia rubella, Cladonia parasitica, Collema nigrescens, C. occultatum, Loxospora elatina, Lobaria pulmonaria, Leskeella nervosa, Leucodon sciuroides, Melanelia subargentifera, Nephroma parile, Physconia detersa, Parmelina tiliacea, Ramalina pollinaria) occur on the bark of Tilia cordata, Acer platanoides, and Ulmus glabra trees in broad-leaved forests, and those of the ass. Cetrario laureri—Lobarietum pulmonariae (diagnostic species: Cetraria laureri, Hypogymnia tubulosa, H. vittata, Lobaria pulmonaria, Parmelia saxatilis, Pertusaria albescens, Sanionia uncinata, Usnea hirta, U. lapponica, U. subfloridana) were described on the Sorbus aucuparia bark in spruce-dominated mountain forests. The presence of Lobaria pulmonaria, Collema nigrescens, C. occultatum, and Nephroma parile indicates floristic relationships between the described communities and the European alliance Lobarion pulmonariae. However, communities with Lobaria pulmonaria in the Southern Urals differ from the European ones of the alliance Lobarion in the presence of Bacidia rubella, Cladonia parasitica, C. fimbriata, Hypogymnia vittata, Melanelia subargentifera, Phaeophyscia hirsuta, P. orbicularis, Physcia aipolia, Physconia detersa, P. distorta, P. perisidiosa, Ramalina pollinaria, Usnea hirta, U. lapponica as well as in the absence of Antitrichia curtipendula, Frullania dilatata, F. tamarisci, Hypnum cupressiforme, Isothecium myurum, Lobaria amplissima, Metzgeria furcata, Nephroma bellum, Normandina pulchella, Orthotrichum lyellii, Melanelia fuliginosa, Parmeliella triptophylla, Peltigera collina, Pertusaria amara, Phlyctis argenta, Platismatia glauca, Pterigynandrum filiforme and several other species, characteristic of the European communities of the alliance Lobarion. The climate in the Southern Urals is more continental, if compared to the Central-European one, and this fact probably explains such a pronounced floristic peculiarity of the associations described. Still the ass. Anaptychio ciliaris—Lobarietum pulmonariae may be preliminary assigned to the alliance Lobarion pulmonariae Ochsner 1928, whereas the ass. Cetrario laureri—Lobarietum pulmonariae is subordinated to the alliance Pseudevernion furfuraceae Barkman 1958.

The study area comprises two mountain groups – Wielka Racza and Pilsko – situated in western part of the Beskid Żywiecko-Orawski Range in Polish Western Carpathians. The flora of this area includes 111 species of liverworts and 2 species of hornworts. 81 species of liverworts and 2 species of hornworts were found in the area of the Wielka Racza group, 108 species of liverworts and 2 species of hornworts – in the area of the Pilsko group. The species new for the Polish part of the Beskid Żywiecki Range were found (27), as well as for the whole Range including the Slovakian part (22) and for the Western Beskids (2). Moreover, 20 species rare in the Western Beskids as well as 11 species rare in the whole area of the Western Carpathians were recorded. 6 species regarded as threatened in the Polish flora occur in the study area. Four of them belong to the category of endangered species (E): Fossombronia wondraczekii, Frullania tamarisci, Porella baueri and P. platyphylla, the remaining two belong to the category of vulnerable species (V): Geocalyx graveolens and Metzgeria conjugata. A particular attention should be payed to the species threatened on European scale: Lophozia ascendens (R category), Porella baueri (T) and Scapania parvifolia (T). The floristic analysis of habitats covered by liverworts as well as habitat groups of liverworts and habitat preferences of particular species arę presented in the paper. The phytogeographic characteristics of the flora is also given, including vertical and horizontal distribution of liverworts in the study area.

Annotation:
In this article I explore works by three artists in which we can see images that relate to bereavement. In the work of the first two, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook and Andres Serrano, we can see photographic images (still and moving) of human corpses, which have been criticized as morbid and unhealthy. However I argue that it is not in fact images of death or the dead that are problematic but those images which present or evoke evidence of the emotions associated with death, and create a situation where we imagine the circumstances of our own deaths or the death of those we love. Images of the dead are acceptable as long as they do not cause pain to the living, as in a video game fantasy or a fiction, or are seen as other and distant. In the second group of works, by Gustgav Metzger, The Absent Dead: The Surrogate Body, the body is not present either because the death has taken place at a distance, either in time or geographically, or both, and a new site must be created. In this section, I discuss Metzger’s auto-destructive art and argue that these works, through their ephemerality, embody a form of ‘meaning making’ and a possibility of the benefits of grief as described by Parkes.

Abstract Gerard of Abbeville (†1272) was a secular master of theology at the University of Paris and a contemporary of Thomas Aquinas and Bonaventure. In the context of reviewing Stephen Metzger’s new two-volume book on Gerard, this paper first adds some new information about Gerard’s early career, notably concerning benefices he claimed in Saint-Omer, Tournai, and Amiens. Afterwards, the salient features of Metzger’s volumes are presented: his placement of Gerard in his institutional context; his characterization of Gerard’s doctrines of wisdom, knowledge, and contemplation in comparison with those of Gerard’s contemporaries; and his editions of texts. In the end, the chronological repercussions of maintaining that Vat. lat. 1015 reflects the original sequence of Gerard’s Quodlibeta, Metzger’s future focus, are discussed.
