The image of a horse appears in many spheres of the British culture and in each case it has a special symbolic meaning. It is important to notice that the symbolic meaning is more essential in the British mentality than the material one. Festivals can be one of the spheres where we can observe the versatility and historical meaning of the horse image. On the one hand, horses as real animals play a significant role in various events: horse competitions, horse shows, parades, royal ceremonies, etc. On the other hand, there is also personification of fancy images of horses at British festivals. In a recent JME paper, Matthew John Minehan applies John Rawls’ veil of ignorance against Judith Thomson’s famous violinist argument for the permissibility of abortion. Minehan asks readers to ‘imagine that one morning you are back to back in bed with another person. One of you is conscious and the other unconscious. You do not know which one you are’. Since from this position of ignorance, you have an equal chance of being the unconscious violinist and the conscious person attached to him, it would be rational to oppose a right for detachment. Likewise, behind the veil of ignorance, it is rat

She knows that the bed she is lying in will be her deathbed, and she prepares herself for the coming and inevitable end. With eVort, she declares before witnesses what her will is for the disposal of her worldly goods, the burial of her mortal body, and the destiny of her immortal soul.

Abstract On 25 July 1634, the English gentleman Sir William Brereton boarded ship at Waterford in Ireland, and, after ‘a quick, pleasant, and dainty passage ‘, reached his destination of Minehead in Somerset a mere twenty-six hours later. Unlike the voyage itself, the landing proved bothersome. The passengers had to be put ashore a mile from the port in the ship ‘s long-boat, ‘wherein we were more tossed, and in more apparent danger than in all the passage, the waves swelling and being mighty high and great ‘. Brereton was returning home to Cheshire after an extended tour of the Low Countries

Though he repeats the often racist and heterosexist language of his informants and the biases of his time, Minehan should be credited here for his relatively objective treatment of girls and prostitution without slipping into moralism. He also describes the ways in which young tramps help to protect each other without a protectionist spin. Minehan describes predatory vs. mutually consenting relationships between “wolves” and “tenders,” while also capturing the more homophobic consensus among the boy hoboes (especially in contrast to the open acceptance of male homosexuality among the men).

Minehan demonstrates concretely that “city relief stations as a rule are much more stringent in their attitude toward youthful vagrants than toward older transients. Where an adult is given six meals and two nights’ lodging, a boy tramp is given one meal and one nights’ lodging; a girl tramp is sent to jail.”

Consistent with the 1930s vogue of turning the anthropological lens homeward, Minehan analyses the structure of young hobohemia as a subculture. Ultimately revealing about tramp folkways, power, protection, and stability in constant flux. Shows how the young hoboes entertain each other, work together and withdivided tasks, how leaders emerge, and how they influence members to be fair.

Again, substantive food in agencies goes to men, not boys or girls. Minehan reports, “I have seen meat cooked almost every day at missions…. The meals, however, were for local homeless men and not for transients.” Boys get “a hint of meat.” However, for “girls there are less accommodations than for boys.” The result for many youth is to sell one’s body, “steal or starve.”

Sheer struggle for survival depends upon endurance but also savvy, including the ability to lie effectively: “As American life rewards the nervy sales promoter who forces his way into a house and his product upon a nation, so transient life rewards the boy or girl with plenty of brass.” Lying, says Minehan, “cements friends and softens enemies.”

Many of the young tramps keep and share diaries with tips on friendly towns, generous citizens, corrupt agencies, and violent police. Under the guise of copying them to go in the same direction, Minehan reproduces the diaries of Blink, a Dutch boy from Pennsylvania who lost an eye to a flying cinder, and Simple Sam, a Jewish boy from New York with a tendency to comically underestimate the complexity of everything.
