This essay profiles the history of the National Education Association of the United States of America. Founded in 1857, the association functioned as a national debating society for a small group of educational leaders for the rest of the nineteenth century. In the twentieth century, it experienced a wave of feminist opposition to the male leaders, the influence of progressive education, a surge of local emphasis, the challenge of trade unionism in the form of the American Federation of Teachers - AFT -, its own racial desegregation, and participation in the creation of the United States Depar

The purpose of this chapter is to glimpse the current status and pedagogical approaches of the media literacy education in the Unites States. This chapter was intended to provide the foundational and delineated information about the media literacy education so that it can be a helpful reference to understanding and developing media literacy in K-12 educators' curricular. This chapter starts with discussion about the growth of media literacy in the contexts of American education such as how it is included in state curriculum frameworks as well as research. Then this chapter moves to introduce the types of pedagogical approaches of media literacy generally implemented in K-12 environments. The pedagogical approaches were categorized by the tenets of “Core Principles of Media Literacy in the United States” outlined by National Association of Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) (2007). Finally, this chapter discusses five core concepts of media literacy and the list of guidelines that are requisites for the development of the media literacy education materials based on the foundational concepts.

To shed some light on how writing methods are currently taught in a variety of programs across the United States and continue examining high-quality writing educators, the present chapter presents five distinct models for teacher preparation. These models are the result of meeting state-level standards; national standards through the International Literacy Association (ILA); and core competencies from research, theory, and practice. The course models represent the Pacific Northwest, Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast, showing diversity across the United States. Specifically in the present chapter, the researchers (1) present effective models of writing instruction; (2) provide examples of integrated approaches to research, theory, and practice for writing instruction; and (3) examine limitations and opportunities within each model. The goal of the present chapter is to outline these models in the hopes that other programs can modify and replicate the models that best fit their unique demographics, needs, and literacy standards.

Abstract There are many similarities between the development of specialties in the United States and in Germany. In both countries, a decentralized political system combined with fierce professional competition to provoke medical elites to identify themselves closely with science and specialization. National professional associations responded to these conditions by taking on a central role in the reform of medical education and practice. The American Medical Association (AMA) was established, and became involved in issues of training, research, and specialization, well in advance of the comparable German medical association.

OBJECTIVES To investigate the epidemiologic characteristics and outcomes of exposures to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), nicotine, and tobacco products among young children in the United States. METHODS A retrospective analysis of exposures associated with nicotine and tobacco products among children younger than 6 years old was conducted by using National Poison Data System data. RESULTS From January 2012 through April 2015, the National Poison Data System received 29 141 calls for nicotine and tobacco product exposures among children younger than 6 years, averaging 729 child exposures per month. Cigarettes accounted for 60.1% of exposures, followed by other tobacco products (16.4%) and e-cigarettes (14.2%). The monthly number of exposures associated with e-cigarettes increased by 1492.9% during the study period. Children <2 years old accounted for 44.1% of e-cigarette exposures, 91.6% of cigarette exposures, and 75.4% of other tobacco exposures. Children exposed to e-cigarettes had 5.2 times higher odds of a health care facility admission and 2.6 times higher odds of having a severe outcome than children exposed to cigarettes. One death occurred in association with a nicotine liquid exposure. CONCLUSIONS The frequency of exposures to e-cigarettes and nicotine liquid among young children is increasing rapidly and severe outcomes are being reported. Swift government action is needed to regulate these products to help prevent child poisoning. Prevention strategies include public education; appropriate product storage and use away from children; warning labels; and modifications of e-cigarette devices, e-liquid, and e-liquid containers and packaging to make them less appealing and less accessible to children.

Abstract Assessment Of Student Performance exerts extraordinary influence on every level of the United States education system, from state house to classroom. For this reason, many argue that assessment is an impediment to meaningful reform, while others contend just as force fully that it is perhaps the most crucial catalyst for effecting change in educational practice. In either case, the power that assessments exert on education is unlikely to wane. Therefore, any effort at nationwide science education reform must include reform of student assessment as a major goal. This chapter explores how student assessment in American schools might be redesigned to match the goals of science education reform that are exemplified in efforts such as Project 2061’s Benchmarks for Science Literacy (American Association for the Advancement of Science [AAAS], 1993) and the National Science Education Standards (Standards) (National Research Council [NRC], 1996). The chapter is divided into three sections that describe current assessment practice in the United States, suggest changes that are needed in order for science reform goals to be implemented, and explore possibilities and recommendations for closing the gap between current practice and a more ideal vision of science assessment.

Abstract.—Changing the stewardship behavior of boaters can be accomplished through various traditional and nontraditional communication methods when initiated by boaters and their representative organizations. At national, state, and local levels, the recreational boating community, boating media, engaged government agencies and academic/extension programs, and business entities that serve recreational boaters have developed various ways to accomplish such aims. Methods implemented include providing grants to boating groups to conduct environmental projects, using the boating- oriented media to disseminate messages that promote environmentally sensitive behavior, working directly with marinas and other service providers to improve operation of boats and servicing facilities, and boater-supported government affairs programs that advocate sound environmental policies and adequate funding to meet these objectives. Additionally, due to the high percentage of boats used in fishing activities, communication campaigns that promote ethically sound behavior have successfully reached recreational boaters as well as sport anglers. Specific programs within each of these arenas, conducted by Boat Owners Association of The United States and other organizations, will be discussed in the context of target audience, message content, delivery method, potential measures of success, and future directions.

In the United States, the education system is more than just a mechanism for transmitting knowledge. It is the nation’s most powerful tool for creating economic opportunities and helping individuals secure a good quality of life and parents’ primary plan for securing the well-being of their children. As such, educational attainment is often touted as the proverbial “key to the kingdom” that puts those who hold it on the path to prosperity. This link between economic mobility and education sets the United States apart from much of the rest of the developed world, where most countries have strong welfare systems that allow individuals to succeed routinely without postsecondary education. This international contrast provides an important framework for understanding how the role of education aligns with how Americans see themselves and their futures. More specifically, Americans vest their hopes in education as a means of getting ahead instead of relying on a generous welfare state that ensures that “nobody is in need”—the predominant view, for example, among Europeans. Crucially, the institution of education is supposed to work equally for all Americans, regardless of their starting point. This belief in education as a force for equity as well as opportunity was ensconced in its foundations, as articulated by Horace Mann in 1848, “Education then, beyond all other devices of human origin, is a great equalizer of the conditions of men—the balance wheel of the social machinery.” It persists, extolled by Arne Duncan, US Secretary of Education in the Obama Administration, “In America, education is still the great equalizer” and National Education Association President Dennis Van Roekel, “Education is the great equalizer . . . opening doors of opportunity for all.” However, there are signs that Americans increasingly doubt the viability of these egalitarian ideals and question whether education can truly realize the promise of a better future. In 2014, only 64% of Americans reported that they still believe in the American dream.

Worldwide demand for qualified IT workers has employers exploring under-represented segments of the workforce. The percentage of women IT workers is not keeping pace with the growth of the industry. Minority populations, which are country specific, are also under-represented segments. This paper focuses on three significant minority segments in the United States: women, African Americans and Hispanic Americans. Studies have shown that increasing the number of these three groups enrolled in university computer science programs can help ease the shortage of qualified IT workers. One approach to

In the last decade, statistics and data analysis have become a more visible component of the secondary school mathematics curriculum in the United States. In most cases, statistics and data analysis topics have been divided up and spread through the mathematics curriculum. However, many important concepts of statistics are not mathematical in nature and are not easily integrated into existing mathematics courses. As a consequence, most students complete their secondary education having seen a number of graphical and numerical statistical methods but having not encountered many key concepts req

The national emphasis on highway transportation and a lack of demand for graduates in rail related fields led to a decades long neglect of rail transportation and engineering education by universities in the United States (U.S.). However, the vitality of the private sector freight railroads, along with a growing interest in rail passenger transportation is creating a strong demand for graduates with rail expertise, particularly in engineering and related technical fields. This has re-energized the academic community, and several universities are currently either investigating or implementing r

Background: Chronic pain has become a leading public health concern with roughly 20% of Americans currently living with chronic pain. Individuals living with chronic pain are more likely to report lower quality of life, additional comorbidity, and increased medical expenditures than individuals without pain. Many individuals have initiated cannabis use to manage their pain as an alternative to opioid use. However, studies examining associations between cannabis use and pain intensity rarely include the frequency of cannabis. Aim: Our study aim was to address this scientific gap by elucidating

Between 2018 and 2022, an average of 21,955 fireground injuries occurred annually in the United States [1]. Among these, thermal burns were one of the most common injuries, accounting for approximately 10% of fireground incidents [1]. This underscores the urgent need to improve turnout gear technology to provide better thermal protection for firefighters. Phase change materials (PCMs) can absorb substantial amounts of latent heat during the melting process while maintaining a constant temperature, which makes them ideal for enhancing thermal protection. Our proposal aims to leverage this prote
