The article explores instances of actual ekphrasis (verbal representation of actual works of art) in biographies of the 18th century British socialite Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. Through the case study approach, we argue that ekphrasis serves as a stylistic device in biographies and helps shape the reader’s perception of the subject. Published in different decades of the 20th century, the four biographies of the Duchess illustrate historical move of the biography from novelization towards factual narrative. The study leads to a conclusion that, in the analyzed biographies, the use of ekp

Going beyond an autobiographical reading of María Moreno’s Black out (2016), this article analyzes its intertextualities with late 19th century modernist novels. Moreno’s novel, set in the late 20th century, reveals thematic and formal resonances with narratives that novelized the life and times of the artist. This reading of Black out as an artist novel is based on the relationship it establishes with the modernist archive (constant similarities and also important differences), such as the newspaper form, the defense of a particular aesthetics, and the definitions and positions toward literar

This study proposes an approach to a solution for the problem of the perceived ‚separatedness‛ of language from reality which employs the rhetorical concept of ethos, the doctrinal concept of the Chalcedonian definition of the nature of the incarnated Christ, and Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of ‚answerability.‛ As an alternative to theories of reading and interpretation based on the arbitrariness of linguistic meaning, radical skepticism, and the death of the author, the approach defined in this study emphasizes affirmation of the centrality of the human person and the necessity of close, loving

Through a literary analysis of the novelized biography Almoço de Domingo by José Luís Peixoto, and the semiotic approach of two ad campaigns where Rui Nabeiro is the protagonist, this chapter explores how personal stories intersect with brand identity, resonatin

This chapter looks at relationships between reading and writing, decorous speech and self-formation in the eighteenth century. The process of self-formation is understood by psychologists today to be a fluid and dynamic one, with the potential to vary across environments. The chapter considers how increasingly novelised forms of diary writing produced a swift oscillation for eighteenth-century diarists between addressing the reader and being the reader. New conceptions of the relationship between writing and print, meanwhile, produced a split between the face to face encounters of lower class

Neorealism offered a harsh representation of reality in its portrayal of war brutality, shantytowns, an impoverished population, and abandoned children. This depiction relied on photographic reproduction. However, besides this rendition, neorealism consisted of other multifaceted forms that defined its visual culture. Film posters promoted neorealist productions through a pictorial style and the eroticisation of the actors’ bodies, instead of displaying photographic images of everyday reality, as in photojournalism.
