Background Nummular headache and epicrania fugax are two primary headaches that fall under the heading of epicranial headaches. Methods This article reviews the epidemiological and clinical features of nummular headache and epicrania fugax, proposed pathogenic mechanisms and state-of-the-art management, according to the literature. Results and conclusions Nummular headache and epicrania fugax are generally viewed as rare headache disorders, but no population-based epidemiological data are available. Nummular headache is characterized by continuous or intermittent head pain, which remains circu

Nummular headache (NH) is an unusual disorder attributed to a dysfunction of the epicranial nerves. We report a new series of cases, highlighting some clinical features, the association with other headaches, and the therapeutic response. Data of patients with NH, fulfilling ICHD-3 criteria, observed in a Headache Outpatient clinic during 5 years, were retrieved from records. Response to onabotulinumtoxinA was recorded prospectively and evaluated with a Headache Impact Test (HIT). Twenty-four patients, aged 53.8 (±14.6) years at diagnosis, 13 women, had definitive ( N = 21) or probable ( N = 3)

Background Nummular headache is a rare, recently described topographic headache defined by the circumscribed coin-shaped area of pain. It is classified as a primary headache. There is debate about whether it is due to a peripheral or central disturbance, and its relationship to migraine. Case reports We report two patients with presumed nummular headache secondary to Langerhans cell histiocytosis, both with resolution of their headaches after surgical resection. Conclusion Imaging in patients with clinical features of nummular headache is recommended, as this and other cases highlight that it

Background Nummular headache, or coin-shaped cephalagia, is defined as a mild to moderate, pressure-like pain that is felt exclusively in a circumscribed area. More than 200 cases of nummular headache have been reported since it was defined in 2002, but the pathogenesis remains unclear. Methods A patient with nummular headache who had the symptomatic area of his scalp removed but suffered headache reappearance was reported. All published cases of nummular headache in the English literature were reviewed and analyzed for demographic and clinical features, image and laboratory findings, and resp

Nummular headache is characterized by head pain exclusively felt in a sharply contoured, rounded, or elliptical area of the scalp, fixed in size and shape, and typically 1–6 cm in diameter. The affected area may show variable combinations of hypoaesthesia, dysaesthesia, paraesthesia, allodynia, and/ or tenderness. The symptomatic area may be localized in any part of the head but mostly in the parietal region. Rarely, the disorder may be multifocal, with each symptomatic area retaining all the characteristics of nummular headache. The pain is continuous or intermittent, and generally chronic. N

Nummular (“coin-shaped”) headache (NH) is characterized by generally continuous but usually not severe pain limited to a small area of the scalp. There can be sharp pains (lancinations) superimposed upon baseline aching pain. Diagnosing NH rests on identifying a small consistently located painful area in the scalp. The underlying pathophysiology is thought to be due to a local neuropathic process, perhaps akin to distal trigeminal or cervical root painful neuropathy. There is no definitive laboratory test for NH, and location can vary, although often the focal area is in the parietal scalp reg

Nummular Headache is a primary headache (even if secondary cases were reported), included in the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 3rd Edition (ICHD-3 - 2018). The aim of this chapter is to review the epidemiological and clinical features, pathogenesis and treatment of nummular headache, following updated literature. Although Nummular Headache is considered an uncommon headache, information regarding its true incidence and prevalence is lacking. In tertiary headache clinics, its observation is not so rare; until now, more than 540 cases have been described. Its clinical featu

Abstract Since the 1990s, physicians have suspected that botulinum toxins might be effective in the treatment of headache. Botulinum toxin prevents the release of neurotransmitters at cholinergic nerves (acetylcholine) and sensory nerves (glutamate, substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide [CGRP], and others). OnabotulinumtoxinA has had U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for the treatment of chronic migraine since 2010. It also has FDA approval for treating cervical dystonia (torticollis), and it may not only improve the posture deformity associated with that condition but al
