Sexual objectification occurs whenever a person is treated like a sexual object, reduced to a body (or sexual body parts) and used for the pleasure and consumption of others (Bartky, 1980; Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997). According to Objectification Theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997) women are the main targets of sexual objectification, which is mainly associated with the male objectifying gaze in two contexts: the exposure to sexually objectifying mass media (e.g. television, movies, magazines, advertisements in which women are depicted as sexual objects) and during social interactions. Living in a culture of objectification harms women’s well-being in a number of ways. Despite this well-studied phenomenon, no research has yet investigated whether objectification impacts women’s existential well-being, or meaning in life, which is a critical component of psychological and physical health. Using a terror management theoretical perspective, I propose that objectification is a worldview women are encouraged to participate in in order to achieve meaning. More specifically, I propose that objectification’s effect on meaning will be dependent on women’s perceived success at living

When objectified, a woman is put on a par with her body or body parts resulting in a loss of her personality and individuality. We have examined both the cognitive consequence of the objectification of the self on woman’s self-perception and the possible motivations that lead women to consider sexually objectified female targets as not fully human beings. Feminists have long struggled to demarcate the appropriate limits of feminist critiques of sexual objectification, particularly when it comes to objectifying practices which women both consent to and experience as empowering. These struggles, I argue, are the result of a fundamental misdiagnosis of what happens when women are sexually objectified, whereby the abstract notion of 'treating as an object' is called upon to explicate the kind of phenomena which
