The Amish are known for their high fertility, and one of the groups, the Swartzentruber Amish, is known for its exceptionally large families. Opinions vary about the number, but there are many distinct Amish affiliations in the Holmes County, Ohio, area, ranging from the progressive New Order Amish to the ultraconservative Swartzentruber Amish. In this study, fertility was calculated for the five groups large enough for such analysis. The fertilities (i.e., number of live births for women 45 years and over) were notably congruent with the degree of conservatism (from progressive to conservativ

The speed advantage in bicycling over walking is believed to ease first-and-last mile (F&LM) travel and expand transit service coverage. To quantitatively investigate the potential effect of using bicycle as a F&LM connector, the paper measures and compares the impacts of walking and bicycling F&LM access on transit service coverage. In the estimation of transit service coverage, F&LM travel decay functions representing the attractiveness of public transit that declines with increasing walking/biking time to access transit facilities and the spatial boundaries of transit catchm

Bed bugs have recently re-emerged as human pests worldwide. In this study, two surveys queried licensed pest management companies in Ohio (Midwest USA) about their experiences managing bed bugs. A primary objective was to assess the magnitude and spread of bed bug infestations statewide based on companies’ treatment records from 2005 and 2011 (first survey) and 2016 (second survey). The survey response rates were 35.6% and 31.6%, respectively. Treatment data from 2005 indicated that Ohio’s bed bug problem likely started in the SW corner of the state in Hamilton County (includes city of Cincinn

For five states carved out of the Northwest Territories, the first half of the nineteenth century was a frontier era, replete with the first European settlers and the development of the first towns. As with any historical narrative, it is necessary to "reach" on either side of that era to provide context to the era in question. It is with this chronological connection in mind that the earliest history of what is known today as the Greater Holmes County Amish settlement is examined, specifically the arrival and growth of the Amish in the Walnut Creek area on the east side of Holmes County. In the foreword to Plain Women(Reynolds, 2001), the ethnographer Simon Bronner writes, “In fact we know far more about Amish men than about Amish women.” His statement prompted me to want to know more about Amish women. My research into how life has changed for Amish women fulfilled both my own intellectual curiosity and fills a gap in the understanding of the lives of Amish women in the wider academic field, although a thorough treatment of the lives of Amish women was subsequently published, which both supports and contrasts with my findings (Johnson-Weiner, 2020). We use house prices (HP) and house price indices (HPI) as a proxy to income distribution. Specifically, we analyze distribution of sale prices in the 1970–2010 window of over 116,000 single-family homes in Hamilton County, Ohio, including Cincinnati metro area of about 2.2 million people. We also analyze distributions of HPI, published by Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), for nearly 18,000 US ZIP codes that cover a period of over 40 years starting in 1980’s. If HP can be viewed as a first derivative of income, HPI can be viewed as its second derivative. We use generalized beta (GB) family

Abstract Background: Race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status (SES) have been associated with access to and outcomes after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). The role of health disparity factors beyond race/SES in HCT outcomes, however, has not been well described. This is especially true for long-term HCT survivors, for whom local socio-demographic factors may have a greater impact on outcomes because patients may no longer be under close monitoring of their transplant center. Approximately 1 in 6 children in the United States, and 1 in 5 children in our local county (Hamilton County, Ohio), are food insecure. Here, we describe a novel community–academic partnership to address food inequity through distributed leadership and shared power with local neighborhood leaders. Using neighborhood-level data and community voice, 3 Cincinnati neighborhoods with high rates of poverty and food insecurity were selected as the primary intervention targets. Neighborhood leadership councils with community members representing each neighborhood were created. These councils requested

One of the first county-wide QRTs in the nation, the Hamilton County, Ohio QRT (HC-QRT), has been heralded as a model QRT, and its members have helped to train and teach other jurisdictions wishing to implement similar programs. This is the first of several studies of this QRT’s operations. The present study describes and quantifies the HC-QRTs activities and outputs as it has expanded over a seven-year period. <st
