Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis work is devoted to the synthesis, characterization, and photophysical studies of novel luminescent molecular switches and thermoelectric molecular wires. After a bibliographic survey concerning the modulation of near-infrared (NIR) luminescence with lanthanide ions, the synthesis of macrocyclic lanthanide-based systems bearing two photochromic units is described. The key complexes are fully characterized and their photophysical studies are demonstrated. These complexes display enhanced optical and chemical stability and show photo-tunable emission in the visible and the NIR regions. The third part of this work aims at obtaining multifunctional lanthanide-based switches. The synthesis of new lanthanide complexes bearing three photochromic units and a redox-active ruthenium-based moiety is described. Full characterization of the complexes are further demonstrated. The photophysical studies reveal the possibility to switch the NIR luminescence of the ytterbium(III) ion both optically and electrochemically. The fourth part of this manuscript describes the synthesis and characterization of robust lanthanide-based complexes toward anticounterfeiting technologies. It is shown that switching europium(III) and ytterbium(III) luminescences in the visible and NIR regions could occur in both solution and solid polymer matrices. The last part of this work concerns molecular wires for thermoelectric applications. It describes the synthesis and characterization of promising transition metal complexes that should display quantum interferences in order to reach thermoelectric properties in molecular devices

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleMolecular switches are compounds presenting the ability to commutereversibly between two or more states in response to external stimuli. The goal of thework is the design of molecular switches exhibiting contrasts of their second-ordernonlinear optical (NLO) properties and the highlight of the structural and electronicparameters leading to large contrasts of first hyperpolarizability (β) via amultidisciplinary approach combining the synthesis of new compounds, thecharacterization of their linear (by UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy) and nonlinearoptical properties (by hyper Rayleigh scattering), and the theoretical simulations inorder to predict and interpret molecular properties. These reversible switchingprocesses and the resulting variations of molecular properties have many interests intechnological area such as the development of molecular computers or in lifesciences since many biological functions are based on commutation mechanisms. The major results of our investigations are the interpretation of the NLO responsesand contrasts as a function of the nature, the positioning, and the donor/acceptorcharacter of the substituents

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleSemiconductor microcavities with embedded quantum wells in the strong light-matter coupling regime host quasi-particles called microcavity exciton-polaritons. Their hybrid nature, half-electronic, half-photonic, brings about remarkable nonlinear optical properties. In this work, we focus on microcavities that are structured to enable the coexistence of polaritonic branches with various symmetries and energies. First, a microcavity etched to form micrometers-wide wires is studied. The lateral confinement lifts the degeneracy between the modes which are polarized parallel and orthogonal to the wire direction. We show that this splitting results from built-in constraints which make a precise engineering of the splitting magnitude possible. We then focus on a double microcavity. In the elastic Rayleigh scattering regime, the TE-TM splitting induces a spatial and angular separation of polaritons with different pseudospins. We show that this phenomenon, called "Optical Spin Hall Effect", can be controlled by a strong optical pump beam. In the regime of Optical Parametric Oscillation, the light self-organizes to form patterns in the far field. The selection rules for the orientation and polarization of these patterns are explored in the regime of Optical Parametric Amplification. These studies pave the way for the realization of microscopic "lighthouse" devices (able to continuously orientate the light by a simple polarization control) and ultrafast all-optical switches

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn this work we have investigated the commutation of linear and non linear optical properties in organic multifunctional switches. Indolino-oxazolidine compounds and their derivatives were chosen as example of multifunctional systems, because they combine both acidochromic and photochromic properties. The relationships between the molecular structure of these compounds and their optical properties were established by means of high level the quantum chemical approach and hyper-Rayleigh Scattering of light approaches

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis reports on a detailed characterization of the second harmonic generation (SHG) responses of indolino-oxazolidine derivatives in different environments. These molecular switches are particularly interesting because they can commute between a colorless closed form and a colored open form when triggered by various external stimuli. The two forms display different second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses and a huge contrast of the associated value, making these systems interesting for applications in molecular-scale memory devices with multiple storage and nondestructive read-out capacity. In particular, this thesis demonstrates that the performance of the NLO switches remains when forming self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). This investigation is carried out by using a multi-disciplinary approach that combines measurements of the linear and nonlinear optical responses of the switches in solution with theoretical chemistry calculations performed for molecules in solutions as well as in SAMs. The main results include 1 ) a comparative analysis of the hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) and electric-field induced SHG (EFISHG) responses of the molecules in solution, demonstrating they could be much different owing to the amplitude and orientation of the dipole moment as well as to the non-negligible third-order NLO contribution to EFISHG, 2 ) the investigation of the effects of adding an acceptor nitro group on the oxazolidine of substituting the bithiophene donor group by an alternative ferrocene unit, which both reduce the contrast, and 3 ) the implementation and optimization of a multi-scale numerical method (MD-then-QM) to predict the NLO responses of dynamical systems, which consists in sampling the system geometries and structures using molecular dynamics (MD) and then in evaluating the NLO responses at ab initio quantum mechanical levels (QM). These results as well as the implemented method open the way to investigate new dynamical systems and to design efficient NLO switches
Izquierdo, Serra Mercè. „Photoswitchable glutamate receptors to control neurotransmission with light“.
