Massai e Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés submetidos à combinação de quatro doses de nitrogênio (0, 40, 80 e 120 mg/dm 3 ) e três freqüências de corte (três, quatro e cinco folhas completamente expandidas para o capim- massai e duas, quatro e cinco folhas completamente expandidas para o capim-xaraés), em um esquema fatorial 4 x 3. Os experimentos foram desenvolvidos em casa de vegetação, ambos no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições, totalizando 48 unidades experimentais por experimento. A semeadura foi feita em substrato agrícola comercial e após a emergência cinco plantas foram transplantadas para os vasos com 5,8 dm 3 de solo, deixando-se após o desbaste, três plantas/vaso. Trinta dias antes do transplantio aplicou-se 300 mg/dm 3 de P em todos os vasos. A adubação nitrogenada, via solução aquosa, de acordo com os tratamentos experimentais foi parcelada em quatro vezes, assim como a adubação potássica. Quando as plantas apresentavam o número de folhas expandidas indicador da freqüência de corte foram colhidas a 5 cm do solo iniciando-se as avaliações. Encerradas as avaliações as plantas foram colhidas e submetidas à secagem para determinação de MS. De acordo com os resultados observa-se que o nitrogênio teve efeito positivo sobre as características morfogênicas e estruturais de capim-massai, bem como sobre a produção de MS. A TAlF aumentou linearmente até 65 % com a dose de 120 mg/dm 3 de N. Os valores para filocrono foram de 7,87 e 12,29 dias, respectivamente para a dose de 120 mg/dm3 e para dose controle, ambos colhidas com três folhas completamente expandidas. A produção de MS da parte aérea de capim-massai, bem como a relação lâmina:colmo aumentaram linearmente com as doses de N e com a redução do número de folhas expandidas antes do corte. O número de folhas expandidas antes corte (freqüência de corte) influenciou positivamente a taxa de aparecimento foliar (folha/dia) que variou de 0,075 a 0,09 folhas/dia para três e cinco folhas, respectivamente. A duração de vida das folhas variou de 34 a 39 dias. Quanto ao capim-xaraés, observou-se que as características morfogênicas e estruturais, bem como a produção de MS, com exceção da MS radicular também responderam às doses de nitrogênio aplicadas. A TAlF (cm/dia) aumentou linearmente até 37 % na dose de 120 mg/dm3. A freqüência de corte influenciou a TAlF (cm/dia e cm/GD), filocrono (dias e GD), CFL, NFV, TSe (cm/dia) e MS da parte aérea e raiz. Concluiu-se que plantas de capim-massai e capim-xaráes são responsivas a adubação nitrogenada e que a freqüência de corte também exerce influência sobre algumas características morfogênicas, estruturais e produtivas dessas gramíneas forrageiras.<br>It objectified with this work to evaluate the morphogenetic and structural characteristics of Panicum maximum x Panicum infestum cv. Massai and Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés submitted to the combination of four nitrogen doses (0, 40, 80 and 120 mg/dm3) and three cut frequencies (three, four and five leaves completely expanded for the massai grass and two, four and five leaves completely expanded for the xaraés grass), in a factorial outline 4 x 3. The experiments were developed at greenhouse both in the randomized design, with four repetitions, totalizing 48 experimental units per experiment. The sowing was made in commercial agricultural substratum and after the emerging five plants were transplanted for the vases with 5,8 dm3 of soil, leaving after the paring, three plant/pot. The phosphate fertilization was berformed according to fertility analysis of the soil. The nitrogen fertilization, through aqueous solution, according to the experimental treatments was divided in four turns, as well as the potash fertlization. After the plants presented the number of expanded leaves, indicating the cut frequency, they were harvested to 5 cm of the soil initiating the evaluations. After finishing the evaluations, the plants were harvested and submitted to the drying for determination of DM. According to the results, it was observed that the nitrogen had positive effect about on morphogenetics and structural characteristic of Massai grass, as well as on DM production. TAlF increased xlineally up to 65% with the dose of 120 mg/dm3 of N. The values found for filocron were from of 7,87 to 12,29 days, respectively for the dose of 120 mg/dm3 and for control doses both cut with three completely expanded leaves. The DM Production of massai shoot of, as well as the ratio lamina:stem increased linearlly with the doses of N and with the reduction of the number of leaves expanded before the cut. The number of leaves expanded before cuts influenced positively the foliate appearance rate. Life duration of the leaves varied from 34 to 39 days. In relation the xaraés grass the morphogenetic and structural characteristics, as well as DM production, except for DM root also responded to the doses of applied nitrogen. TAlF (cm/day) increased linearlly up to 37% in the dose of 120 mg/dm3. The cut frequency influenced TAlF (cm/day and cm/GD), filocron (days and GD), CFL, NFV, TSe (cm/day) and DM of the shoot and root. It follows that massai grass and xaeaés grass are responsives the nitrogen fertlization and that the cut frequency also influences some morphogenetic, structural and productive characteristics of these forage grass.

Dans le cadre de cette recherche, la production de biocharbon par pyrolyse est étudiée à des conditions visant sa valorisation comme biochar (amendement pour le sol), tout en considérant son potentiel comme charbon vert (pour bioénergie ou transformations subséquentes). La production du charbon de biomasse s'est effectuée à l'aide de deux réacteurs à lits fixes de types batch, d'une capacité de 1 et 25 gb.hlbatch, respectivement. Le panic érigé (Panicum virgatum) est la biomasse lignocellulosique qui a été utilisée dans le cadre des tests. Les facteurs de production étudiés sont principalement la température (300, 400 et 500 °C) pour un court temps de résidence en réacteur (2,5 et 5 min) et l'effet de l'usage du CO2 plutôt qu'un environnement plus conventionnel d'azote. L'effet de ces facteurs est étudié par rapport aux caractéristiques physico-chimiques des biocharbons obtenus. Un suivi des produits pyrolytiques complémentaires (bio-huile et gaz) a aussi été effectué. Des extractions de biocharbon par Soxhlet (à l'aide de dichlorométhane) ont été analysées par GC-MS et ont permis l'identification d'une multitude de produits présents dans les biocharbons. Les conditions spécifiques utilisées pour la pyrolyse, entre autres la convection forcée avec taux de chauffe rapide à 300 °C — N2 à l'aide du réacteur 1 glbatch, ont présenté des rendements et propriétés de biocharbon avantageux pour l'amélioration de la productivité du procédé de torréfaction (en comparaison avec des travaux rapportés, notamment ceux de Gilbert et al. [2009]). Les analyses des extractions de charbons de biomasse ainsi que des bio-huiles (par GC-MS), produites à l'aide du réacteur 25g/batch, ont permis d'observer des différences significatives dans les composés obtenus lors de l'usage de CO2 vs N2. Plusieurs composés observés dans les extraits de biocharbons, produits en atmosphère de N2, se retrouvent en quantités moindres dans les extraits de biocharbons produits en atmosphère de CO2 pour des températures communes. À titre d'exemple, le furfural, un composé aromatique commun provenant de la dégradation des glucides, s'est retrouvé uniquement dans les extraits de biocharbons en présence de N2 vs CO2, à 400 °C. Parmi l'ensemble des conditions étudiées (pour les 2 réacteurs), uniquement le naphtalène et des dérivés du naphtalène sont observés comme hydrocarbures aromatiques polycycliques, et ce, uniquement suivant les traitements à 500 °C. L'étude de l'usage du CO2 comme gaz d'entrée en réacteur mena à des différences significatives pour l'ensemble des températures étudiées, et ce, tant pour les biocharbons que pour les produits liquides et gazeux. À 300 °C, en environnement de CO2 comparé à N2, il est possible d'observer une production de bio-huile significativement plus faible (18,0 vs 24,6 %; CO2 vs N2 pour P<0,002), ce qui représente un résultat cohérent avec l'obtention de biocharbon au contenu en composés volatils significativement plus élevé obtenu aux mêmes conditions (0,29 vs 0,35 g composés volatils - biocharbotig biomasse originale; CO2 vs N2 pour P=0, I ). De plus, à 500 °C, un contenu en cendres de biocharbon significativement plus faible a été observé en environnement de CO2 vs N2 (P<0,06). [symboles non conformes]

With such criterion, the rest period should be variable. However, some species and, or cultivars of forage plants used in livestock were evaluated and compared in terms of production and forage quality in a management in a single condition, characterized by the adoption of fixed rest periods. Thus, this type of assessment did not take into account that such plants have distinct morphological and physiological and agronomic characteristics, which implies in the adoption of variable rest periods. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate Panicum maximum cultivars under two cut frequencies, 28 days and time for the canopy to reach 95% of light interception (LI). The experiment was conducted in a site in the Animal Science Department (DZO) at the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), from November 2011 to October 2012. The experimental design was a complete random block with 4 x 2 factorial design with three replications, totaling 24 experimental units. Treatments consisted of four cultivars of Panicum maximum (Colonião grass, Mombasa grass, Ever-Green grass and Tanzania grass) in two cut frequencies (28 days and 95 % of LI). During the experimental period, the height of the plants in the plots was monitored at the same time as the light interception by the canopy. Morphogenetic and structural traits were evaluated in four tillers per plot. Growth of leaves, stems and leaf senescence was monitored weekly. From these data, the following was calculated: the number of live leaves per tiller (NLT), phyllochron (PHY), leaf elongation rate (LER), leaf senescence rate (LSR) and stem elongation rate (SER). The tiller dynamics was evaluated in two clumps, limited by metal frames (20 x 20 cm) per experimental unit. All basal tillers within the frame were counted and identified in each generation. Appearance rate, mortality rate and survival rate and the total number of tillers were evaluated based on the counts. Forage mass was estimated at the pre -cut condition and at two representative sites in the plot. The harvested forage was separated into leaf blade, green stem and dead forage. Those data was used to quantify the total DM yield (TDM) and the leaf blade components (BDM), stem (SDM) and dead forage (DDM). Data were grouped according to the seasons of the year and submitted to analysis of variance using the statistical package SAEG, version 8.1, by applying the test of Tukey at 5% of probability. The increase in the competition for light among tillers in the 28-day-of-age cultivars resulted in lower LER and higher SER, TSF and phyllochron in the rainy season. During the rainy season, Colonião grass presented higher MST yield than the other cultivars. Regarding production of BDM, Mombasa and Colonião cultivars did not differ and had higher yields than the others. The Mombasa grass had the lowest production of SDM compared with other forages. The production of DDM by Colonião grass was higher than Ever- Green grass and similar to the production of Tanzania. During this period, cultivars managed with 95% of IL presented higher tissue flow with greater LDM and lower SDM and DDM in relation to the 28-day defoliation. During the dry season, Ever-green grass displayed higher TDM and LDM when managed with 95% LI. Overall, during the dry season, there were no differences in production and morphological composition of forage in the assessed managements. Cultivars managed with 95% LI had more appropriate morphological composition, especially in the rainy season, compared to those managed with 28 days. Moreover, due to higher production of MSC and DDM in the 28-day frequency, Colonião and Ever- green cultivars should not be compared in terms of production and structural conditions with other cultivars in single management conditions.<br>A partir da década de 1990, estudos com plantas forrageiras tropicais têm sido realizados de modo a interromper o período de descanso quando o dossel intercepta 95% da luz incidente sob lotação intermitente. Com esse critério, o período de descanso deve ser variável. No entanto, algumas espécies e, ou, cultivares de plantas forrageiras utilizadas na exploração da pecuária foram avaliadas e comparadas, em termos de produção e qualidade de forragem, numa condição única de manejo, caracterizada pela adoção de períodos de descansos fixos. Assim, esse tipo de avaliação não levou em consideração que tais plantas possuem características morfofisiológicas e agronômicas distintas, o que implica adoção de períodos de descanso variáveis. Portanto, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar cultivares de Panicum maximum submetidas a duas frequências de corte, 28 dias e tempo para que o dossel alcançasse 95% de interceptação luminosa (IL). O experimento foi realizado em área do Departamento de Zootecnia (DZO) da Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), no período de novembro de 2011 a outubro de 2012. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos completos casualizados em arranjo fatorial 4 x 2 com três repetições, perfazendo 24 unidades experimentais. Os tratamentos foram definidos por quatro cultivares de Panicum maximum (Colonião, Mombaça, Sempre-Verde e Tanzânia) em duas frequências de corte (28 dias e 95% de IL). Durante o período experimental, a altura das plantas nas parcelas foi monitorada de forma concomitante com a interceptação de luz pelo dossel forrageiro. As características morfogênicas e estruturais foram avaliadas em quatro perfilhos por parcela, cujo crescimento de folhas, colmos e senescência foi acompanhado semanalmente. A partir dessas informações foram calculadas as variáveis Número de Folhas Vivas por Perfilho (NFV), Filocrono (FIL), Taxa de Alongamento Foliar (TAlF), Taxa de Senescência de Folhas (TSF) e Taxa de Alongamento de Colmos (TAlC). A dinâmica do perfilhamento foi avaliada em duas touceiras delimitadas por molduras metálicas (20 x 20 cm) por unidade experimental. Todos os perfilhos basilares dentro da moldura foram quantificados e identificados em cada geração. Com base nas contagens, foram estimados a Taxa de aparecimento, Taxa de mortalidade e Taxa de sobrevivência e O número total de perfilhos. A massa de forragem foi estimada na condição de pré-corte e em dois pontos representativos da parcela, sendo toda a forragem colhida separada em lâmina foliar, colmo verde e forragem morta. Com esses dados foi possível quantificar a produção de MS total (MST) e dos componentes lâmina foliar (MSL), colmo (MSC) e forragem morta (MSM). Os dados foram agrupados de acordo com as estações do ano e submetidos à análise de variância, utilizando-se o pacote estatístico SAEG, versão 8.1, mediante a aplicação do teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. O aumento da competição por luz entre os perfilhos nas cultivares com 28 dias acarretou menores TAlF e maiores TAlC, TSF e filocrono, no período das águas. Durante o período chuvoso, o capim-colonião apresentou maior produção de MST em relação às demais cultivares. Para produção de MSL, as cultivares Mombaça e Colonião não diferiram entre si e apresentaram maiores produções que as demais. O capim-mombaça teve a menor produção de MSC em comparação com as outras forrageiras. A produção de MSM pela cultivar Colonião foi superior à da Sempre-Verde e semelhante à da Tanzânia. Nesse período, as cultivares manejadas com 95% de IL apresentaram maior fluxo de tecidos com maior MSL e menores MSC e MSM em relação à desfolhação com 28 dias. Durante o período seco, o capim-sempre-verde exibiu maior MST e MSL quando manejado com 95% de IL. Em geral, durante a época seca não houve diferenças em produção e composição morfológica da forragem nos dois manejos avaliados. As cultivares manejadas com 95% de IL tiveram composição morfológica mais adequada, especialmente na época das chuvas, em relação àquelas manejadas com 28 dias. Ademais, devido à maior produção de MSC e MSM na frequência de 28 dias, as cultivares Colonião e Sempre-Verde não deveriam ser comparadas, em termos produtivos e estruturais, com outras cultivares em condições únicas de manejo.

This project aims at investigating the effect of CO2 enrichment on the growth and gas exchange of C3, C3-C4 and C4 Panicum grasses. Potted plants were grown in soil under well watered conditions, in artificially lit environmentally controlled cabinets or naturally lit greenhouses at varying levels of CO2 enrichment. CO2 enrichment enhanced the dry weight of C3 and C4 Panicum species under optimal light and N supplies, but had no effect on the total leaf N or TNC concentrations. The high-CO2 induced photosynthetic reaction in the C3 species was accompanied by a reduced Rubisco concentration and was related to the conservation of the relative growth rate of the plant. Elevated CO2 had no effect on the photosynthetic capacity of the C4 species, but enhanced its CO2 assimilation rates under high light and N supplies. The effect of elevated CO2 on the leaf and stem anatomy reflected increased carbon supply at high CO2 in the C3 grass, and reduced transpiratory demand at high CO2 in C4 grasses. Consequently, it is clear that both C3 and C4 grasses are likely to be more productive under rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations.<br>Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Food industries are focusing energies towards the development of functional foods and food ingredients. Several ancient grains are being used as a source of functional nutrients. Millets are minor cereals which have high nutritional value, are non-glutinous and are easily digestible. In spite of this, their consumption is limited. This could be attributed to their non-availability in ready-to-eat and ready-to-use foods. Processing of millets to incorporate them in ready-to-eat foods can increase their nutritional value, availability and economic value. Thermal processing can improve the bioavailability of certain vitamins and minerals and can also help in lowering the water activity thus, preventing the growth of microorganisms. Thermally processed foods also have better organoleptic properties. One interesting method of thermal processing is popping. Popping enhances the carbohydrate and protein digestibility by inactivating some of the enzymes and enzyme inhibitors. Popping also improves the color, appearance, aroma and taste of the processed food commodity. In the present study, the popping quality of little millet (Panicum sumatrense) and the effects of popping on the nutrient composition and the functional properties of the millet were studied. The popping quality of little millet was optimized with respect to the temperature of the particulate medium and the moisture content of the millet, both of which were found to determine the yield of popping. The optimized conditions for popping little millet were obtained at 16% grain moisture and particulate medium temperature of 260°C. The total protein, crude fat and total ash content of the popped millet was almost equal to that of the native millet. Popping increased the non-resistant starch content of little millet. The availability of total phenolics increased from 225 mg GAE/100g sample (db) in native millet to 661.462 mg GAE/100g sample (db) in popped millet. Popped millet flour (PMF) had a higher oil absorption capacity at room temperature as well as at 140°C and also exhibited higher swelling power and solubility. While the cold paste viscosity of the native millet flour (NMF) was 5.359 X 10^-3 Pa s, that of PMF varied from 1.5 to 7.5 Pa s. NMF had a hot paste viscosity (HPV) of 0.1908 Pa s whereas the HPV of PMF varied from 1.9 to 7.5 Pa s. From the results obtained in the present study, it was deduced that PMF would form pastes of uniform viscosity which would be more stable to heat during cooking and would have a greater shelf-life. It was also confirmed that popped millet flour had the advantage over native millet flour with improved nutrient availability and better functional properties.<br>L'industrie alimentaire vise le développement d'aliments et d'ingrédients fonctionnels. De nombreux grains anciens sont utilisés comme source d'éléments nutritifs fonctionnels. Le millet est une petite graminée qui possède une excellente valeur nutritive, sans gluten et facilement digestible. Cependant cette céréale est peu consommée. Cela s'explique en partie par la non-disponibilité de produits prêts à manger issus du millet. La transformation du millet afin de l'incorporer dans une variété d'aliments peut améliorer sa valeur nutritive, sa disponibilité et sa valeur économique. Les traitements thermiques peuvent améliorer la biodisponibilité de certaines vitamines et minéraux et peuvent aider également a diminué l'activité de l'eau en prévention de la multiplication des microorganismes. Les aliments transformés par procédés thermiques ont souvent de meilleures propriétés organoleptiques. Un intéressant procédé de transformation thermique est l'expansion à sec qui entraîne l'éclatement du grain. L'expansion thermique à sec améliore la digestibilité des hydrates de carbone et des protéines en inactivant les enzymes et les inhibiteurs d'enzymes. L'expansion thermique peut aussi améliorer la couleur, l'apparence, l'arôme et le goût des céréales soufflées. Dans la présente étude, la qualité de petit mil (Panicum sumatrense) a été étudiée afin de déterminer les effets du traitement thermique sur la composition nutritionnelle et les propriétés fonctionnelles du millet soufflé. La qualité du millet soufflé a été optimisée en tenant compte du traitement thermique, soit la température des particules solides et la teneur en eau des grains, qui affectent tous deux le rendement. La protéine brute, la matière grasse brute, et la fraction totale de cendres n'ont pas été affectés par le traitement. L'expansion thermique a cependant augmenté l'amidon non-résistant du petit mil. La disponibilité des composants phénoliques a augmenté de 225 mg GAE/100g (base sèche) des échantillons témoins à 661.462 mg GAE /100g (base sèche) pour les grains soufflés. La farine de millet soufflé avait une capacité d'absorption d'huile plus élevée autant à la température de la pièce qu'à 140°C, avec également un pouvoir de gonflement et une solubilité plus élevés. La viscosité à basse température de la pâte de farine de millet témoin était de 5.359 ×10^-3 Pa s par rapport à une valeur variant de 1.5 à 7.5 Pa s pour la farine de millet soufflé. La viscosité à haute température de la pâte de farine de millet témoin était de 0.1908 Pa s par rapport à une valeur variant de 1.9 à 7.5 Pa s pour la farine de millet soufflé. Ainsi, de par les résultats obtenus, la farine de millet soufflé permet la formation d'une pâte de viscosité uniforme qui serait stable face à un procédé thermique, lui assurant une meilleure conservation. Les meilleures conditions pour l'expansion thermique du petit mil sont établies à une teneur en eau des grains de 16%, et une température des particules chauffantes de 260°C. La recherche a confirmé que la farine de millet soufflé est supérieure à la farine témoin (millet non-soufflé) avec une amélioration de la disponibilité des éléments nutritifs et de meilleures propriétés fonctionnelles.

Tanzânia. O capim foi cultivado em recipientes sob condições de ambiente protegido no período de janeiro a outubro de 2004. As irrigações foram realizadas com turnos de rega de 1, 4 e 7 dias, e lâminas de irrigação para restabelecer 50, 75 e 100% da disponibilidade total de água no solo. Aos 46 dias após a semeadura, procedeu-se o corte de uniformização. A partir de então, foram realizados quatro cortes para avaliação. A evapotranspiração da cultura (ETc) foi obtida por meio de quatro lisímetros de drenagem. Foram avaliados durante o experimento a densidade populacional de perfilhos, características morfogênicas, produtividade e teor de matéria seca (MS), eficiência do uso da água (EUA), composição bromatológica, digestibilidade "in vitro" da matéria seca (DIVMS), a distribuição e a profundidade efetiva do sistema radicular. O perfilhamento foi maior para maior nível de irrigação. O clima proporcionou maior efeito nas características morfogênicas que os tratamentos. Turno de rega diário proporcionou maiores taxa de aparecimento de folhas (TApF) no período em que a temperatura e a radiação foram superiores, período esse responsável também pelas maiores taxas de alongamento de colmo (TAlC). A taxa de alongamento de folhas (TAlF) foi superior no tratamento que apresentou o menor consumo de água. Os fatores estudados não proporcionaram efeito expressivo no número de folhas emergentes (NFEm), expandidas (NFEx) e vivas (NFV). A produtividade de MS aumentou à medida que aumentou o nível de irrigação e diminuiu o turno de rega. O teor de MS foi maior conforme se aumentou o nível de irrigação. Os valores de EUA foram menores no corte realizado no período de menores temperaturas, mostrando o efeito da sazonalidade. Existiu uma relação diretamente proporcional entre a EUA e o fator turno de rega. O teor de proteína bruta (PB) foi maior quanto menor foi a quantidade de água aplicada. Os teores de DIVMS foram inversamente proporcionais aos teores de fibra em detergente ácido (FDA). A profundidade efetiva do sistema radicular foi maior quanto maiores o turno de rega e o nível de irrigação.<br>The aim of this work was to study the effect of different irrigation frequency and levels of irrigation on Panicum maximum Jacq. cv Tanzania. The grass was cultivated in recipients inside greenhouse, in the period of January to October 2004. The irrigations were performed with a frequency of 1, 4 and 7 days, in order to reestablish soil water content to 50, 75 and 100% of the total available water in the soil. Forty-six days after the seeds had been sowed, an unifomization cut was performed, and after that, four cuts for evaluation were accomplished. The crop evapotranspiration (ETc) was obtained by means of four drainage lysimeters. During the experiments the tiller population density, morphogenetical characteristics, yield and the grass dry matter content (DM), water use efficiency (WUE), chemical composition of the grass, in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), the root distribution and the effective root depth were evaluated. The tillering was bigger for the highest level of irrigation. The climate provided a more significant effect on the morphogenetical characteristics than the treatments. The irrigation frequency provided a larger leaf appearance rate (LAR) in the period when temperature and radiation were higher. This period was also responsible for the biggest steam elongation rate (SER). The leaf elongation rate (LER) was superior in the treatment that showed the least consumption of water. The studied factors did not provide an expressive effect on the emerging leaf numbers (EmLN), expanded leaf numbers (ExLN) and living leaf numbers (ALN). The productivity of DM increased for the irrigations that reestablished higher soil moisture and irrigation frequency. The grass dry matter increased with the irrigation depth. The WUE values were smaller in the cut accomplished in the periods of low temperatures, showing the effect of seasonalness. A proportional relation between the WUE and the irrigation frequency occurred. The crude protein (CD) increased as the irrigation depth decreased. The IVDMD were inversely proportional to the acid detergent fiber (ADF). O rápido declínio na digestibilidade da parede celular, devido à lignificação, dificulta o uso eficiente das gramíneas de clima tropical. Objetivou-se detectar e sequenciar o cDNA completo dos principais genes responsáveis pelo processo de biossíntese da lignina, CCoAOMT, C4H e PAL nas gramíneas Brachiaria brizantha Stapf. cv. Marandu e Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Tanzânia. As amostras das espécies de plantas forrageiras foram coletadas do Campo Agrostológico e levadas, imediatamente, para o laboratório para a extração do RNA total. Após tratamento do RNA total com o kit GeneRacer (Invitrogen), obteve-se o comprimento total 3\' e 5\' do cDNA das forrageiras B. brizantha e P. maximum. Os primers específicos foram delineados com base nas sequências de B. brizantha, P. maximum e milho, depositadas no GenBank, e foram aneladas com os primers 3 e 5 do kit GeneRacer para obtenção do comprimento total do gene. As amplificações foram feitas através PCR qualitativo e os produtos foram purificados, clonados e seqüenciados em ambas direções. Foram encontrados alguns problemas com a otimização na reação de seqüenciamento e obteve-se 67,25 % e 82,22% do gene CCoAOMT, 13,29% e 26,16% do gene PAL e 13,22% do gene C4H em B. brizantha e P. maximum, respectivamente. O sequenciamento dos genes codificantes das enzimas envolvidas no processo de lignificação, apresentaram alta similaridade com as sequências nucleotídicas do milho, e foi possível identificar e classificá-los de acordo com as classes que compõem cada gene. B. brizantha e P. maximum apresentaram 89,6% com CCoAOMT 1 e 88,3% com CCoAOMT 3, 96% e 95% com PAL1 e 96% com C4H1, respectivamente. Ao analisar as similaridades das sequências nucleotídicas dos fragmentos sequenciados, para os genes CCoAOMT, PAL e C4H, entre as demais gramíneas amplamente estudadas, encontrou-se 91% e 91,14% CCoAOMT do arroz, 79,6% e 82% CCoAOMT do trigo, 94,33 e 94,2% CCoAOMT do sorgo, 87 e 86% CCoAOMT da aveia, 90% e 94,25% PAL do arroz, 82% e 93,33% PAL do trigo, 92 % e 89,5% PAL da aveia, 94,33 e 95% PAL do sorgo, 97% e 91% PAL cana-de-açúcar, 90% e 93% PAL da cevada, 76% C4H do arroz, 94% C4H do sorgo, 89% C4H do trigo e 87% C4H da cevada, em B. brizantha e P. maximum, respectivamente. A altíssima similaridade encontrada entre os fragmentos dos genes da via dos fenilpropanóides em B. brizantha e P. maximum, principalmente com o milho e arroz que possuem seu genoma em avançado estudo e conhecimento, possibilitam o uso do banco de dados destas espécies para estudos futuros de biologia molecular.<br>The rapid decline in digestibility of cell wall, due to lignification, hinders the efficient use of tropical grasses. The objective was to detect and sequence the complete cDNA of the major genes responsible for lignin biosynthesis process, CCoAOMT, PAL and C4H in grasses Brachiaria brizantha Stapf. cv. Marandu and Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Tanzania. Samples of fodder plant species were collected from the field agrostology and taken immediately to the laboratory for extraction of total RNA. After treatment of total RNA with the Generac kit (Invitrogen), we obtained the full length 3\'and 5\' cDNA of forage B. brizantha and P. maximum. The specific primers were designed based on sequences of B. brizantha, P. maximum and corn, deposited in GenBank, and were ringed with primers 3 \'and 5\' of the Generac kit to obtain the total length of the gene. The amplifications were performed by qualitative PCR and the products were purified, cloned and sequenced in both directions. We found some problems with optimization in the sequencing reaction and obtained 67.25% and 82.22% of the CCoAOMT gene, 13.29% and 26.16% of PAL gene and 13.22% of the C4H gene in B. brizantha and P. maximum, respectively. The sequencing of genes encoding enzymes involved in lignification, showed high similarity with the nucleotide sequences of maize, and it was possible to identify and classify them according to the classes that make up each gene. B. brizantha and P. maximum 89.6% presented with CCoAOMT 1 and 88.3% with CCoAOMT 3, 96% and 95% to 96% with PAL1 and C4H1, respectively. By analyzing the similarities of the nucleotide sequences of the fragments sequenced, the genes for CCoAOMT, PAL and C4H, among the other grasses studied extensively, met 91% and 91.14% of the rice CCoAOMT, 79.6% and 82% of the CCoAOMT wheat, 94.33% and 94.2 CCoAOMT sorghum, 87 and 86% oat CCoAOMT, 90% and 94.25% of the rice PAL, 82 PAL% and 93.33% for wheat, 92% and 89.5 PAL% oats, 95% and 94.33 PAL sorghum, 97% and 91% PAL cane sugar, 90% and 93% PAL barley, rice 76% C4H, C4H 94% sorghum, 89% the C4H C4H wheat and barley 87% in B. brizantha and P. maximum, respectively. The high similarity found among the fragments of the genes of the phenylpropanoid pathway in B. brizantha and P. maximum, especially with corn and rice that have their genome in advanced study and knowledge can enable the use of the database of these species for future studies of molecular biology.

Nippert<br>Anthropogenic climate change is likely to alter the function and composition of ecosystems worldwide through increased precipitation variability and temperatures. To predict ecosystem responses, a greater understanding of the physiological and growth responses of plants is required. Dominant species drive ecosystem responses, and it is essential to understand how they respond to understand potential ecosystem changes. Dominant species, such as switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), posses large genotypic and phenotypic variability, which will impact the degree of responses to projected climate changes. I studied the physiological and growth responses of switchgrass, a common perennial warm-season C4 grass that is native to the tallgrass prairie, to alterations in precipitation amount and temperature. The first experiment I conducted focused on the responses of three ecotypes of P. virgatum to three precipitation regimes (average, 25% below, 25% above). I concluded that the physiological responses of photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, transpiration, dark-adapted fluorescence, and mid-day water potential in P. virgatum were explained by ecotypic differences. Robust responses to altered precipitation were seen in the water use efficiency, mid-day water potential, and aboveground biomass. Ecotypic differences were also seen in several aboveground biomass variables, and most strikingly in flowering times and rates. There were few interactions between ecotype and precipitation, suggesting precipitation is a strong driver of biomass production, whereas adaption of ecotypes to their local environment affects physiological processes. A second experiment studied the response of local populations of P. virgatum to nocturnal warming. Results showed significant differences in daytime E, daytime gs, and flowering phenology between treatments. Differences in aboveground biomass were between topographic positions. I concluded that water availability, based on topographic position, is a strong driver of P. virgatum aboveground biomass production, but nocturnal warming has the potential to impact flowering phenology, physiological responses, and exacerbate plant water stress. I also reviewed the literature on the ecological effects of implementing switchgrass cultivation for biofuel. From the literature review, I concluded that large-scale switchgrass cultivation will have widespread ecological impacts. If landscape heterogeneity is maintained through harvest rotations, no till farming, and mixed species composition, ecosystem services can be maintained while providing economic value.

Dois ensaios foram conduzidos em vasos, em casa de vegetação da Unidade de Crescimento de Plantas (UCP) do Departamento de Biologia Vegetal no Campus da UFV. No primeiro ensaio, avaliou-se o efeito de quatro desfolhas do perfilho principal apresentando três folhas completamente expandidas e 7-8 perfilhos primários: a remoção de todas as folhas (desfolha total), a remoção da folha adulta mais jovem (desfolha superior), a remoção das duas folhas adultas mais velhas (desfolha inferior) e controle (sem desfolha), juntamente com a total desfolha dos demais perfilhos, cortados a 8 cm do solo. Foram avaliadas as variáveis: taxa de aparecimento (TA p F) e alongamento (TA l F) de folhas, a taxa de expansão da área foliar, o crescimento do sistema radicular, o nível de carboidratos totais não estruturais (CTNE) da raiz e do colmo, a taxa de crescimento relativo (TCR), a taxa de assimilação líquida (TAL), a razão de área foliar (RAF) às idades de 2, 5, 9 e 16 dias após as desfolhas, bem como a taxa fotossintética máxima das folhas remanescentes ao corte às idades de 2, 6 e 13 dias. Foram observadas cinco repetições inteiramente casualizado. por tratamento segundo o delineamento As folhas adultas apresentaram taxa fotossintética máxima semelhante, experimentando aumento nos primeiros dias após a desfolha e queda aos 13 dias. A desfolha reduziu os teores de CTNE da base do colmo em todos os tratamentos, sendo observados menores valores para a desfolha total. Comprometimento do crescimento do sistema radicular e do teor de CTNE das raízes foi observado nas plantas sob desfolha total que também tiveram sua TCR reduzida nos primeiros dias de rebrotação. Entretanto, o aumento na RAF possibilitou a estas plantas recuperação da TCR e alta taxa de expansão da área foliar igualando a área foliar das demais aos 16 dias de rebrota. No segundo ensaio, estudou-se o desenvolvimento das plantas, em três crescimentos: o de estabelecimento (C1), o da rebrota após o corte aos 16 dias (C2) e o da rebrota após corte aos 37 dias (C3) após emergência. As variáveis estimadas foram: índices de TCR, TAL e RAF, TA p F, TA l F e taxa de expansão da área foliar. As colheitas foram feitas ao longo do desenvolvimento das plantas em cada crescimento considerado: 13, 20, 27, 42, 55, 69 e 83 dias após emergência (C1); 0, 3, 6, 10, 17, 24, 38, 52 e 66 dias do C2 e 0, 1, 3, 7, 21, 35, 49, 63 e 77 dias do C3. Foram observadas três repetições (vasos), segundo delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Altos valores de TAL, RAF e TCR foram observados no início do crescimento seminal (C1) das plantas, caindo assintoticamente com o avanço da idade. O corte aos 35 dias de idade comprometeu o crescimento das plantas expresso em seus valores de TA p F, a TA l F e a taxa de expansão da área foliar, RAF, TAL e TCR, sendo observados valores negativos para estes dois últimos índices, nos primeiros dias de rebrota. A baixa demanda respiratória e a alocação de fotoassimilados para o crescimento foliar garantiram às plantas cortadas aos 16 dias, balanço positivo de carbono e conseqüente rápida recuperação. O terceiro ensaio foi conduzido a campo na Central de Experimentação Pesquisa e Extensão do Triângulo Mineiro - CEPET, onde se estudou três períodos de descanso do pastejo rotacionado em capim-mombaça. Os períodos de descanso, foram definidos em função do tempo necessário para que se observasse o aparecimento de 2,5; 3,5 e 4,5 folhas por perfilho, respectivamente tratamentos A, B e C, dispostos num delineamento inteiramente casualizado. A cada tratamento corresponderam 6 piquetes (repetições), totalizando 18 piquetes experimentais. Foram avaliadas as seguintes características: disponibilidade de biomassa total, taxa de crescimento cultural (TCC), altura, relação folha-colmo, índice de área foliar (IAF), intercepção da radiação fotossintéticamente ativa (RFA), teor de carboidratos totais não estruturais (CTNE) na base do colmo, taxa de aparecimento e alongamento foliares, etc. Maiores TCC foram observadas para o período de descanso correspondente ao aparecimento de 2,5 folhas por perfilho. A menor disponibilidade de biomassa por ciclo de pastejo dos tratamentos de menor período de descanso, foi compensada pelo maior número de ciclos observados. O IAF foi proporcional à duração do período de descanso, mas a intercepção da RFA atingiu índices em torno de 95% ao final do período de descanso em todos os tratamentos. Os teores de CTNE não foram influenciados pela duração dos períodos de descanso. O prolongamento do período de descanso resultou em comprometimento da estrutura do pasto, sinalizado pelos baixos valores da relação folha-colmo. Os índices morfogênicos, TA p F, TA l F não foram afetados pelos tratamentos estudados, exceção feita à taxa de alongamento do colmo que foi proporcional à duração do período de descanso.<br>Three experiments were carried out to assess the morphophysiological and structural traits related to Mombaça grass growth and yield. Two trials were run in pots, in glasshouse. The first one aimed to evaluate four defoliation treatments of the main tiller bearing 3 fully expanded leaves and 7-8 primary tillers: T1 – no defoliation, T2 – total defoliation, T3 – removal of the last expanded leaf and T4 - removal of the two lowest expanded leaves. In all cases primary tillers were completely defoliated by cutting at 8 cm height from soil level. The variables assessed were: leaf appearance, elongation and expansion rate, root growth, relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), leaf area ratio (LAR), maximum leaf photosynthesis rate by the ages of 2, 5, 9 and 16 days regrowth. There were 5 replications, according a completely randomized design. All 3 adult leaves exhibited the same photosynthetic rate, which increased shortly after defoliation, but had declined by the 16 th day regrowth. Total stem non-structural carbohydrates content dropped in response to leaf removal, mainly in the total defoliation treatment which also brought about reduced root growth. Still, the completely defoliated plants had restored their RGR by the 16 th day regrowth due to high leaf area expansion rate and leaf area ratio. The second trial aimed to study plant development in three growths: the seminal, establishment growth (G1) and the regrowths following a clipping taken at the 16 th (G2) and 37 th (G3) days of the seminal growth. The variables assessed were the growth indices: RGR, NAR, LAR, and the rates of leaf appearance, elongation and expansion. Accordingly, harvests were taken at the age of: 13, 20, 27, 42, 55, 69 and 83 day of the seminal growth (G1); 0, 3, 6, 10, 17, 24, 38, 52 and 66 day of the 2 nd regrowth (G2) and 0, 1, 3, 7, 21, 35, 49, 63 and 77 day of the 3 rd growth (G3). There were 3 replications (pots) per treatment in a completely randomized design. Figures for NAR, LAR and RGR were high during early seminal growth but declined assynthotically as plant aged. Initial values for these indices were higher in the seminal growth as compared to the 2 regrowths. The cutting taken on the 37 th day of the seminal growth hindered the initial growth of the plants regarding leaf appearance and elongation rates, LAR, NAR and RGR. The last two indices had negative values during early regrowth, but they had been recovered by the 16 th day regrowth. The third experiment, dealt with the duration of the rest period in a rotationally grazed Mombaça grass sward. This trial was run in the Central de Experimentação Pesquisa e Extensão do Triângulo Mineiro – CEPET, to study three rest periods defined in terms of the time for the expansion of 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 leaves per tiller, referred as treatments A, B and C, respectively. The experimental design was completely randomized with 6 replicates (paddocks) per treatment. Experimental variables assessed were: biomass availability; crop growth rate (CGR), plant height, leaf-stem ratio, leaf area index, interception of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), total non-structural carbohydrates concentration in stem basis, leaf appearance and elongation rates and tiller density population. Biomass availability per grazing cycle, leaf area index and plant height varied directly while tiller population, CGR and leaf-stem ratio varied inversely with length of the rest period. Though leaf area index and biomass related directly with the duration of the rest period, interception of PAR reached critical values soon before completion of rest period, regardless of experimental treatment.<br>Tese importada do Alexandria

The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse at the Animal Science Department - UFRPE, from March to September 2008. Samples collected in the of Sergipe state, municipalities of Pernambuco (São José da Coroa Grande, São Bento do Una and Itambé) and the Mombaça, Tanzania and Massai cultivars were evaluated. The seedlings were transplanted to experimental pots and fertilized with limestone and nitrogen. Two standardization cuts were performed and 27 days after the 2nd cut the clones were submitted to water stress. The establishment period until the application of water stress lasted 27 days. The experimental treatments were of 7, 14, 21 and 28 days without irrigation in order to evaluate the morphogenic characteristics in the regrowth period at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 days. A completely randomized design as a 4 x 7 (four periods of water stress x seven clones) factorial arrangement was used. Seven evaluations were performed in alternated days during the regrowth period. Estimates of plant height, leaf blade length, number of emerging green leaves, number of dead leaves and total number of tiller were the morphogenic characteristics evaluated during the regrowth period. Clone means were submitted to Tukey test at 5% of probability. Number of tillers, leaf blade length, plant height, number of dead leaves and number of green leaves were submitted to the analysis of variance in a repeated measure model within each stress period. No significant effect on clone regrowth under water stress from 7 to 28 days was detected. The highest water stress level favor the plant development after cutting.<br>Objetivou-se avaliar as características morfogênicas de clones de Panicum maximum Jacq. durante o período de rebrote após períodos de suspensão hídrica. O experimento foi realizado no Telado do Departamento de Zootecnia da UFRPE, no período de março a setembro de 2008. Foram avaliados materiais coletados nos municípios de Sergipe, São José da Coroa Grande, São Bento do Una e Itambé e os cultivares Mombaça, Tanzânia e Massai. As mudas foram transplantadas para vasos com capacidade para 7,5kg, preenchidos com solo previamente destorroado e corrigido, na proporção de 2 t/ha, fevereiro de 2008. Realizou-se adubação nitrogenada, na proporção de 50 kg/ha, em abril de 2008. Após o período de estabelecimento foram aplicados os períodos de suspensão hídrica. Foram realizados dois cortes de uniformização e 27 dias após o 2o corte os clones foram submetidos à suspensão hídrica. O período de estabelecimento até a aplicação dos períodos de estresse durou 37 dias. Os tratamentos experimentais constaram de submeter os clones a períodos de suspensão hídrica (sete, quatorze, vinte e um e vinte e oito dias sem irrigação) e avaliar as características morfogênicas no período de rebrota. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, em um arranjo fatorial quatro x sete. Foram realizadas sete avaliações em dias alternados no período de rebrote. As variáveis estudadas foram altura da planta, comprimento da lâmina foliar, número de folhas verdes em expansão, número de folhas mortas e número total de perfilhos. Para comparação entre médias de clones utilizou-se o teste Tukey, a 5% de probabilidade. A rebrota dos clones avaliados pouco diferenciam após níveis de suspensão hídrica de 7 a 28 dias. O maior nível de suspensão hídrica avaliado favorece o desenvolvimento da planta após o corte.

In addition, according to Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the effect of combined drought and heat stresses will also be exacerbated in the next years, resulting in crop yield and economic losses. In spite of the consequences of the drought and heat combinations, the investigations to reduce its detrimental effects are scarce, particularly under climate change conditions. In this sense, we carried out two experiments in field conditions to determine the plant antioxidant responses to drought (wS), elevated temperature (+2 °C above air temperature) (eT) and combined drought and elevated temperature stresses. We used Panicum maximum during the first experiment and Stylosanthes capitata during the second one. In order to increase the temperature, we used the Temperature Free-Air Controlled Enhancement (T-FACE) facility. Samplings of P. maximum were taken 13, 19 and 37 days after the treatments have begun in the first experiment; meanwhile, the samplings of S. capitata were taken 17, 24 and 46 days in the second experiment. In both experiment, the samplings were taken at 6:00 am and 12:00 pm. Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 2006 and 2007 to evaluate the herbicide tembotrione for postemergence grass control. Tembotrione inhibits the p-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) enzyme, which aids in the formation of essential plant constituents for photosynthesis. Tembotrione efficacy was examined in the greenhouse on large crabgrass, giant foxtail, shattercane, and fall panicum. Significant activity that could translate to commercial levels of weed control in the field was found on all species except fall panicum. Greenhouse studies also compared the efficacy of tembotrione, mesotrione, and topramezone which represent the three HPPD-inhibiting herbicides commercially available in U.S. corn production. Tembotrione and topramezone have more activity on these grasses than mesotrione. Tembotrione was also tank-mixed with either nicosulfuron or foramsulfuron to evaluate fall panicum response. Activity on fall panicum was similar weather nicosulfuron or foramsulfuron was applied alone or with tembotrione. In the field, it was also determined that nicosulfuron or foramsulfuron could be added to tembotrione to control fall panicum. The addition of atrazine to nicosulfuron and tembotrione did not negatively effect fall panicum control. It was also observed in both the field and greenhouse that utilizing methylated seed oil provided more activity than crop oil concentrate.

The experimental design was completely randomized, with four replicates, in a 3 x 3 factorial scheme, three cellulase weight / weight (0, 3 and 6%) and three fermentation periods (30, 60 and 120 days), totaling 36 experimental silos. For silage, the mombaça grass was cut at an approximate height of 80 cm, at 20 cm from the ground level. The addition of the enzyme was efficient in improving the fermentative and bromatological parameters of the silages of the cultivar in question. The addition of cellulase promoted a reduction of 5.7% in the NDF contents in relation to the control, but there was also a reduction in the fiber digestibility of 6.6% in relation to the control. However, the digestibility reduction was lower in proportion to the reduction of NDF, which allowed to increase net lactation energy by 15% and NDT by 11%. The enzyme use also resulted in lower pH (4.74 vs 3.73 control and with cellulase) and higher titratable acidity (5.86 and 12.77 control and with cellulase), indicating that the cellulase allowed a fermentative process within the recommended standards. After 30 days of silage, the silages had already completed the anaerobic fermentation cycle and would be fit for consumption. After the 60 day period, the silage had a reduction of the quality parameters indicating that tropical grass silages should be used with up to 60 days of fermentation.<br>O presente estudo foi desenvolvido com objetivo de determinar a o efeito de celulase adicionada ao processo de ensilagem do capim Mombaça, na composição bromatológica, digestibilidade da parede celular e o período mínimo de fermentação para abertura do silo. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições, em esquema fatorial 3 x 3, sendo três doses de celulase peso/peso (0, 3 e 6%) e três períodos de fermentação (30, 60 e 120 dias), totalizando 36 silos experimentais. Para a ensilagem, o capim mombaça foi cortado em altura aproximada de 80 cm, a 20 cm do nível do solo. A adição da enzima foi eficiente em melhorar os parâmetros fermentativos e bromatológicos das silagens do cultivar em questão. A adição de celulase promoveu redução de 5,7% nos teores de FDN, em relação ao controle, mas também houve redução na digestibilidade da fibra de 6,6% em relação ao controle. No entanto, a redução de digestibilidade foi inferior proporcionalmente à redução de FDN, o que permitiu aumentar a energia líquida de lactaçãoe em 15% e o NDT em 11%. O uso de enzima resultou também em menor pH (4,74 vs 3,73 controle e com celulase) e maior acidez titulável (5,86 e 12,77 controle e com celulase), indicando que a celulase permitiu um processo fermentativo dentro dos padrões recomendados. Após 30 dias de ensiladas, as silagens já tinham completado o ciclo de fermentação anaeróbico e estariam aptas para o consumo. Após o período de 60 dias, a silagem teve redução dos parâmetros de qualidade indicando que silagens de capins tropicais deveriam ser utilizadas com até 60 dias de fermentação.

This study focuses on switchgrass, Panicum virgatum L., a North American tallgrass prairie species that has been used in agriculture for only 50 years. We hypothesized that wild variants of this species are more mycorrhizal dependent than the cultivars due to selection against mycorrhizae in agricultural conditions. Mycorrhizae, naturally occurring associations between roots and symbiotic fungi, are known to benefit plants in most environments. These associations have been proposed as a means for crop improvement in agriculture. However, current agricultural practices tend to diminish the potential for crops to benefit from mycorrhizae. Two greenhouse experiments with a factorial design were performed using switchgrass inoculated or not with Glomus intraradices Schenck and Smith. In the first experiment, four wild varieties (PH, ONP, Ojibway and Pterophylla) and six cultivars (Forestburg, Summer, Shelter, Caddo, NU and Trailblazer) were grown for 12 weeks. From those, 3 wild types (PH, ONP and Ojibway) and 3 cultivars (Forestburg, Caddo and NU) were chosen for the second experiment. The growth of P. maximum cv. Milênio (BRA 006,998) was evaluated in plastic pots with holes for drainage of excess water. The treatments consisted of a factorial arrangement 4 x 4 x 4 corresponding to four doses of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) in the completely random design with two replications. The doses of nutrients were: 0, 80,120 and 160 mg.dm-3 of N as urea, 50, 100, 200 and 300 mg.dm-3 of P in the form of triple superphosphate, and 0, 80, 120 and 160 mg dm-3 of K in the form of potassium chloride. The morphogenic and structural traits were evaluated by marking three tillers per pot, measuring three times a week. By these measures were estimated the morphogenic traits: TApF, Filo, TAlF, TAlC, TSF, as well as, the structural traits: RFC, DVF, NFV, CFF and NPerf. The measures were ceased after the total senescence of the first leaf fully expanded in two plants of each experimental unit, making the cutting of plants to estimate the total production of MS per pot, MSF and MSC. After the evaluation, the results were reduced to the average of treatments, and analyzed by factor analysis. Two factor analysis were made for the 23 original variables (traits), aiming to condense the information in a smaller set of factors, with a minimum loss of this information. The first analyze, we considering ten morphogenetic and structural traits, and the second one, we analyzed the other thirteen production traits. The variables were grouped by their correlation and each group of variables was a factor. Response surface methodology was applied using factorial scores estimated to analyze the combinations of N, P and K. The factor analysis reduced the ten morphogenic and structural traits for three factors, with retention of 79.07% of the total variation of data and only 20.91% loss for information of the total variables. The first factor explained 47.61% of the total variance of the data, correlating positively to the variables TApF (0.9114), TAlF (0.8907), TSF (0.8361), TAlC (0.7752) and negatively with variable Filo (-0.8851) and DVF (-0.8031). Because of the high correlation coefficients of these factors, it was conventionally called to the morphogenetic traits of the grass milênio (CM Factor). The second factor explained 17.91% of the total variance of the data, showing a positive correlation with the variables NPerf (0.8954) and CFF (0.62155), and negative correlation with the characteristic RFC (-0.7809) indicating that this factor is associated with the "structural traits" of this forage plant (Factor EC). The third factor, called "Number of Leaves Live" (Factor NFV) of grass milênio, explained 13.54% of the total variance of the data and it was correlated only with a positive characteristic NFV (0.8075). The observed values of the factorial scores of CM showed a polynomial tendency (P<0.01) and the analysis of variance was significant (P<0.01) for N, K, as well as, for the negative interaction between the doses of these two nutrients applied. It was not observed for these variables, significant effect of P. The factorial scores of CM had estimated linear trend to the increasing levels of nitrogen and applied to the linear decreasing doses of K. It was in grass-millennium, positive response of the variables TApF, TAlF, TAIC and TSF (Factor CM) at doses of N. The DVF showed negative correlation with other variables. The factor EC varied significantly (P<0.01) with doses of N and K, and the interaction between the two nutrients was not significant (P>0.01). The equation of polynomial regression showed adjustment to the linear and quadratic effects, according to the rates of N and K, respectively. There was a negative correlation of variable RFC with the CFF and the NPerf variables, which integrated the Factor EC. The factor NFV was influenced significantly (P<0.01) only by nitrogen fertilization, adjusting for the quadratic effect. It was observed from the dose of 80 mg.dm-3 N, linear increase in scores factorial estimated that factor with the supply of N to the highest dose tested of 160 mg.dm-3. For the variables related to the production of grass milênio under fertilization, the factor analysis by the method of principal components, provided the reduction from thirteen variables to three factors, with retention of 95.12% of the total variation of data and only 4.88% loss of information. It was observed that the first factor, called Factor "forage production" (Factor PF) of grass milênio, explained 43.99% of the total variance of the data correlated positively with the variables: MSF (0.9859), MSC (0.9930), MST (0.8493), BP (0.9966), PAMM (0.9913) as demonstrated by their factor loading. The second factor, called factor "Growth forage" (Factor CF) of grass milênio, explained 34.92% of the total variance of the data showed high and positive correlation with the variables Leaf % (0.9502), Colmo % (0, 8827), RPAR (0.9205) and negative correlation with MSR (- 0.74482) and Root % (-0.9669). The third factor, called factor "Grass senescent" (FSen) of grass milênio, it was correlated with a positive MSMM (0.9063) and MM % (0.8809) and a negative impact on variable RPAMM (-0.9095). The observed values of the factorial scores of PF had a polynomial tendency (P<0.01). This analysis showed significance (P<0.01) for the doses of K provided in the solution, giving the factorial scores estimated quadratic trend for this factor for K nutrient. The interactions between the nutrients N and P, and between K and N, and between P and K were significant (P<0.01), giving the factorial scores estimated for the grass milênio PF the linear growing inclination for the three interactions, respectively. The analysis of variance factor for the FA showed no significance (P>0.01) for any of the three nutrients (N, P and K) studied. The observed values of the factorial scores of FSen a polynomial tendency (P<0.01). The analysis of variance showed the same significance (P<0.01) for the doses of N and K. The factorial scores of the estimated factor FSen tended square, with point of maximum for levels of nitrogen, and linear trend for the decreasing levels of K, as well as, the greatest factor scores estimated in the larget dose of N and smaller of K.<br>O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação no Departamento de Zootecnia, sob luz e temperatura ambiente, no campus da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Minas Gerais. Avaliou-se o P. maximum cv. Milênio (BRA 006998) cultivado em vasos plásticos com orifícios para drenagem do excesso de água. Os tratamentos foram constituídos de um arranjo fatorial 4x4x4 correspondente a quatro doses de nitrogênio (N), quatro de fósforo (P) e quatro de potássio (K) no delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com duas repetições. As doses dos nutrientes foram: 0, 80,120 e 160 mg.dm-3 de N, na forma de uréia, 50, 100, 200 e 300 mg.dm-3 de P, na forma de superfosfato triplo, e de 0, 80, 120 e 160 mg dm-3 de K, na forma de cloreto de potássio. Para avaliações das características morfogênicas e estruturais foram marcados três perfilhos por vaso, mensurados três vezes por semana. Através das medidas registradas foram estimadas as características morfogênicas: TApF, FILO, TAlF, TAlC ,TSF e estruturais: RFC, DVF, NFV, CFF e NPerf. Após total senescência da primeira folha completamente expandida, em duas plantas de cada unidade experimental cessaram-se as avaliações, efetuando-se o corte das plantas para estimativa da produção total de MS por vaso, produção de MSF e MSC. Após as avaliações, os resultados foram reduzidos às médias dos tratamentos, sendo analisados pela análise de fatores, adotando-se como critérios de seleção dos fatores, as cargas fatoriais e a comunalidade. Com o objetivo de condensar as informações, contidas nas 23 variáveis originais estudadas, em um conjunto menor de fatores, com um mínimo de perda dessas informações, foram feitas duas análises de fatores. Uma, considerando dez características morfogênicas e estruturais e a segunda análise de fatores, avaliando as outras treze características de produção. As variáveis observadas foram agrupadas por meio de suas correlações e cada grupo de variáveis representa um fator. Depois de estimados os escores fatoriais foram feitas análises de superfície em função das combinações das doses de N, P e K. A análise fatorial pelo método dos componentes principais proporcionou redução de dez variáveis, relacionadas às características morfogênicas e estruturais do capim-milênio sob adubação, para três fatores com retenção de 79,07% da variação total dos dados e apenas 20,91% de perda de informação. O primeiro fator explicou 47,61% da variância total dos dados, correlacionando-se positivamente com as variáveis TApF (0,9114), TAlF (0,8907), TSF (0,8361), TAlC (0,7752) e negativamente com a variável FILO (-0,8851) e DVF (-0,8031). Em razão dos elevados coeficientes de correlação desses fatores convencionou-se denominá-los de características morfogênicas do capim-milênio (Fator CM). O segundo fator explicou 17,91% da variância total dos dados, apresentando correlação positiva com as variáveis NPerf (0,8954) e CFF (0,62155) e correlação negativa com a característica RFC (-0,7809) indicando que esse fator estaria associado às Características Estruturais dessa planta forrageira (Fator CE). O terceiro fator, denominado Número de Folhas Vivas (Fator NFV) do capim-milênio, explicou 13,54% da variância total dos dados e correlacionou-se exclusivamente de forma positiva com a característica NFV (0,8075). Os valores observados dos escores fatoriais das CM apresentaram tendência polinomial (P<0,01) e a análise de variância revelou significância (P<0,01) para as doses de N, K, bem como para a interação negativa entre as doses desses dois nutrientes aplicados. Não foi observado, para essas variáveis, efeito significativo do P. Os escores fatoriais estimados das CM apresentaram tendência linear crescente para as doses de N aplicadas e linear decrescente para as doses de K. Observou-se, no capimmilênio, resposta positiva das variáveis TApF, TAlF, TAlC e TSF (Fator CM) às doses de N. A DVF apresentou correlação negativa com as demais variáveis. O Fator CE variou significativamente (P<0,01) com as doses de N e K, sendo a interação entre os dois nutrientes não significativa (P>0,01). A equação de regressão polinomial apresentou ajuste ao modelo quadrático e linear crescente, em função das doses de N e K, respectivamente. Observou-se correlação negativa da variável RFC com as variáveis CFF e NPerf que compõem o Fator CE. O fator NFV foi influenciado significativamente (P<0,01) apenas pela adubação nitrogenada, ajustando-se ao modelo quadrático. Observou- se a partir da dose de 80 mg.dm-3 de N, aumento linear dos escores fatoriais estimados desse fator com o suprimento de N até a maior dose testada de 160 mg.dm-3. Para as variáveis relacionadas à produção do capim-milênio sob adubação, a análise fatorial pelo método dos componentes principais, proporcionou a redução de treze variáveis para três fatores, com retenção de 95,12% da variação total dos dados e apenas 4,88% de perda de informação. Observou-se que o primeiro fator, denominado Fator Produção Forrageira (Fator PF) do capim-milênio, explicou 43,99% da variância total dos dados correlacionando-se positivamente com as variáveis: MSF (0,9859), MSC (0,9930), MST (0,8493), PA (0,9966), PAMM (0,9913) conforme demonstrado por suas cargas fatoriais. O segundo fator, denominado fator Crescimento Forrageiro (Fator CF) do capim-milênio, explicou 34,92% da variância total dos dados e apresentou alta correlação positiva com as variáveis % Folha (0,9502), % Colmo (0,8827), RPAR (0,9205) e correlação negativa com a MSR (-0,74482) e % Raiz (-0,9669). O terceiro fator denominado, fator Forragem Senescente (FSen) do capim-milênio, correlacionou-se de forma positiva com MSMM (0,9063) e % MM (0,8809) e de forma negativa com a variável RPAMM (-0,9095). Os valores observados dos escores fatoriais da PF apresentaram tendência polinomial (P<0,01) e a análise de variância revelou significância (P<0,01) para as doses de K aplicadas, apresentando os escores fatoriais estimados desse fator tendência quadrática para esse nutriente. As interações entre os nutrientes N e P, entre N e K e entre P e K foram significativas (P<0,01), apresentando os escores fatoriais estimados para PF do capim-milênio tendência linear crescente para as três interações, respectivamente. A análise de variância para o fator CF não apresentou significância (P>0,01) para nenhum dos três nutrientes (N, P e K) estudados. Os valores observados dos escores fatoriais da FSen apresentaram tendência polinomial (P<0,01) e a análise de variância do mesmo revelou significância (P<0,01) para as doses de N e K aplicadas. Os escores fatoriais estimados do fator FSen apresentaram tendência quadrática, com ponto de máximo, para as doses de N aplicadas e tendência linear decrescente para as doses de K, sendo o maior escore fatorial estimado para esse fator observado na maior dose de N e menor de K.

Foram avaliadas a produção, a composição química, a digestibilidade in vitro da matéria seca e a porcentagem de perfilhos sobreviventes. A produtividade média foi de 1,87 ton MS/ha, que foi maior no período 1 (2,58 ton MS/ha). Houve comportamento linear crescente para a produção de matéria seca com o avanço na idade de corte, sendo maior a partir de 42 dias. A idade de corte de 21 dias apresentou menor produção de MS, ao passo que as idades de 28 e 35 dias foram iguais e intermediárias. O teor de matéria seca foi menor para os períodos de crescimento 1 e 4, intermediário para o 3 e superior para o período 2. Não houve variação sobre os teores de proteína bruta, matéria mineral, lignina e carboidratos totais em resposta aos períodos de crescimento ou idades de corte. Houve efeito na interação período de crescimento e idade de corte para o teor de nutrientes digestíveis totais (NDT) (P<0,01), sendo observado valor médio de 48,9% e comportamento linear decrescente para todos os períodos de crescimento nas idades de corte avaliadas. O valor do NDT foi maior para o período de crescimento 1 em relação aos períodos 3 e 4. Já para as idades de corte o valor de NDT reduziu na medida em que a idade de corte aumentou, sendo maior para as idades 21 e 28 dias, intermediário para 35 e 42 dias e menor para 49 dias. Verificou-se comportamento linear decrescente com o avanço na idade da planta ao corte para a digestibilidade in vitro da matéria seca (R² = 0,859) e para o teor de carboidratos não fibrosos (CNF, R²=0,981). Os maiores valores de CNF foram observados para os períodos de crescimento 1 e 2 em relação aos períodos 3 e 4. O capim colhido com 21 e 28 dias apresentaram maior teor de CNF em relação às demais idades, sendo o menor valor obtido para a idade de corte de 49 dias. Aos 49 dias de idade o capim massai apresentou maior porcentagem de meristemas apicais sobreviventes em relação aos 21 e 35 dias. Foi observado também maior valor de meristemas apicais sobreviventes para os períodos de crescimento C3 e C4 (p<0,001). A melhor combinação entre produção e qualidade é o corte realizado com 21 e 28 dias de idade em situações com temperatura e radiação elevadas. _____________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT<br>The objective of this trial was to evaluate the production and quality of the grass Panicum maximum cv Massai harvested at different cutting ages (21, 38, 35, 42 and 49 days) in four periods of growth. Were evaluated the production, chemical composition, in vitro dry matter digestibility and the percentage of tillers survivors. The average dry matter production was 1.87 ton DM/ha, which was higher in the growth period 1 (2.58 ton DM/ha). There was an increasing linear behavior for the production of dry matter with the advance in cutting age, being higher from 42 days. The cutting age of 21 days showed lower production of DM, whereas the ages of 28 and 35 days were equal and intermediate. The dry matter content was lower for periods of growth: 1 and 4, intermediate for 3 and higher for the 2 period. There was no change on the crude protein, ash, lignin and total carbohydrates in response to periods of growth or harvest ages. An effect of cutting age and interaction between growth period and cutting age for the total digestible nutrients (TDN) (P<0,01), which average value of 48.9% and decreasing linearly for all periods of growth in dates of the cuts evaluated. The TDN value was higher in the growth period 1 compared to the 3 and 4 periods. As for cutting ages TDN value reduced with cutting age increase, being higher for cuts in 21 and 28 days, intermediate for 35 and lower for 42 days and 49 days. A decreasing linear effect was verified with cutting age advance for in vitro dry matter digestibility (R² = 0.859) and for non-fiber carbohydrate contents (CNF, R²=0,981). The highest CNF values were observed for growth periods 1 and 2 in relation to the 3 and 4. Forage harvested at 21 and 28 days showed higher CNF content compared to other evaluated ages, with the lowest value obtained for the cut time of 49 days. At 49 days old the massai grass showed higher percentage of apical meristems survivors compared to 21 and 35 days. Was observed also higher amount of apical meristems survived for 3 and 4 growth periods (P<0,01). The best combination among production and quality is achieved with 21 or 28 days of the cutting age in situations with high temperature and radiation.

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative performance of four forages (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandú, Brachiaria decumbens, Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés and Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça) after N doses application (0, 100, 200, 400 kg ha-1). The experiment was carried out at Santo Domingo Farm, located in Taciba county, in which soil type is Typic Dark. The experimental design used was a randomized block, in a 4 x 4 factorial scheme, with four replications. At early 2008 august, forages were sown manually in five rows, spaced m between rows, being conducted from 2009 September to January 2009. On 2008 October, sidedressing nitrogen fertilization was applied (60 days after emergence). The first cut was held on November 23 and the second in January 2009 (42 days after the first cut), being determined shoot dry matter yield (kg ha-1), neutral detergent fiber content and crude protein (CP). Nitrogen fertilization increases shoot dry matter yield, with emphasis on Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés and Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça; Panicum maximum displays, irrespective of sidedressing nitrogen application, higher crude protein values. Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés and Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça had the lowest crude fiber levels.<br>Atualmente, a maioria das pastagens brasileiras apresentam algum grau de degradação, sendo necessárias práticas conservacionistas para melhorar suas condições, tais como adoção de novas espécies e adubação, em especial o nitrogênio. O objetivo deste experimento foi avaliar o desempenho quantitativo e qualitativo de quatro forrageiras (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandú, Brachiaria decumbens, Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés e Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça) após a aplicação de doses de nitrogênio (0, 100, 200, 400 kg ha-1). Assim, o experimento foi realizado na Fazenda São Domingos, localizada no município de Taciba, no qual o solo é do tipo Latossolo Vermelho Escuro. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 4 x 4, com quatro repetições. No início de agosto de 2008, as forrageiras foram semeadas manualmente em cinco linhas, com espaçamento de 0,30 m entrelinhas, sendo conduzidas no período entre setembro de 2008 a janeiro de 2009. No dia 15 de outubro de 2008, a adubação nitrogenada foi realizada (60 dias após a emergência). O primeiro corte foi realizado no dia 23 de novembro e o segundo no dia 4 de janeiro de 2009 (42 dias após o primeiro), sendo determinados a produtividade de matéria seca (kg ha-1), teor de fibra detergente neutro e proteína bruta (PB). A adubação nitrogenada aumenta a produtividade de matéria seca, com destaque para a Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés e Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça; O Panicum maximum apresenta, independentemente da adubação nitrogenada em cobertura, maiores valores de proteína bruta. A Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraés e Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça apresentam os menores teores de fibra bruta.

Na região Amazônica do Norte do Brasil, Panicum maximum cultivares Mombaça, Tanzânia e Massai causam cólica severa e morte durante o período chuvoso quando os pastos em brotação são pastejados pelos equídeos. Em oito surtos estudados, um total de 52 de 153 equídeos adoeceram e 19 morreram (10 mulas e 9 cavalos). Os sinais clínicos foram de cólica e dilatação abdominal e os sinais clínicos variaram de 12 horas a 4 dias. As atividades séricas de gama glutamiltransferase e aspartato aminotransferase estavam em níveis normais e os valores séricos de uréia e creatinina se mostravam elevados esporadicamente. Os principais achados macroscópicos e microscópicos observados foram no sistema digestivo. O estômago, intestino delgado e grosso apresentavam hemorragia severa, ulcerações e erosões da mucosa. Ao exame histológico foram observadas gastrite linfoplasmocitária difusa e enterite com congestão severa e hemorragias, e ocasionalmente necrose epitelial e ulceração. Necrose linfocítica do tecido linfóide associada ao intestino foi observada ocasionalmente. Nefrose tubular ocorreu em alguns animais. Em relação à etiologia da doença, nos estudos dos surtos foram pesquisadas três causas prováveis: intoxicação por saponinas contidas nas pastagens; intoxicação por esporidesmina produzida por Pithomyces chartarum; e intoxicação por cantaridina produzida por Epicauta spp. Os pastos foram negativos para as saponinas diosgenina e yamosgenina, os níveis de oxalato estavam dentro da normalidade para a espécie e não foram encontrados besouros do gênero Epicauta na pastagem. Foram realizados 3 experimentos com Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça em brotação. No experimento 1, realizado na época de seca, dez animais receberam no cocho durante 40 dias o capim em brotação recém cortado sem adoecer. No experimento 2, realizado na época de chuvas, outros 10 animais receberam capim recém cortado em brotação no cocho. Adoeceram dois animais, um no 5º dia e outro no 11º dia de experimento com sinais clínicos de cólica sendo retirados do experimento. No experimento 3, também durante a época de chuvas, com o capim em brotação, os mesmos 10 animais foram separados em dois grupos de 5, um grupo recebia capim recém cortado e o outro recebia o capim cortado, dessecado à sombra durante 24 horas antes da administração. No experimento 3, no grupo que recebia o capim coletado com 24 horas de antecedência, um animal adoeceu no 13º dia de experimento e também foi retirado do experimento. Foram realizadas análises bromatológicas nas amostras de P. maximum cv. Mombaça e Tanzânia aos 15, 30, 45 e 60 dias de crescimento vegetativo para verificar os valores de carboidratos não fibrosos (CNF). Os valores médios de CNF encontrados nas 36 amostras das pastagens aos 15, 30, 45 e 60 dias foram de 19,15, 19,36, 10,61 e 12,90%, respectivamente. Esses valores são mais do que o dobro do observado em pastagens de P. maximum em outras regiões do Brasil, indicando que as cólicas causadas por P. maximum na região Amazônica poderiam estar ligadas à grande concentração de CNF durante a época de chuvas, causando distúrbios fermentativos, com produção de gás e cólicas.<br>In the Amazon region of northern Brazil, Panicum maximum cultivars Mombaça, Tanzania, and Massai cause severe colic and death in horses and mules. The disease occurs in the rainy season, when sprouting pastures are grazed by equidae. In the 8 separate disease outbreaks studied, a total of 52 out of 153 equidae were affected, including 19 that died (10 mules and 9 horses). Clinical signs were colic and abdominal dilatation, with a clinical manifestation period of 12 hr to 4 days. Serum activities of gamma-glutamyl transferase and aspartate aminotransferase were within reference intervals; however, serum urea nitrogen and creatinine concentrations were occasionally elevated. The primary gross and histologic lesions were observed in the digestive system. The stomach, small intestine, and large intestine had severe hemorrhages and mucosal erosions and ulcerations. Histologic examination revealed diffuse lymphoplasmacytic gastritis and enteritis with severe congestion, hemorrhage, and occasional epithelial necrosis and ulceration. Lymphocellular necrosis was occasionally observed within gut-associated lymphoid tissue. Tubular nephrosis occurred in some animals. In the outbreaks the toxic pastures were negative for diosgenin- and yamogenin-based saponins, and oxalate concentrations were within reference intervals for the species. Epicauta spp was not found in the pastures. Three experiments were performed with growing Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça in penned horses. In Experiment 1, performed during the dry season, 10 horses were fed with sprouting P. maximum immediately after collection during 40 days, without showing clinical signs. In Experiment 2, performed during the raining season, other 10 horses were fed with recently harvested sprouting P. maximum. Two horses showed colic on the 5th and 11th days after the start of the ingestion. The other animals showed dilated abdomen due to gas production. In Experiment 3, also during the raining season the same 10 horses used in experiment 2 were divided in two groups of 5 horses each. Group 1 received P. maximum immediately after harvesting, and Group 2 received the Grass 24 hours after harvesting. One horse from group 2 showed colic on day 13th after the start of feeding. Nutritional analysis was performed in pastures of P. maximum cv Tanzania causing colic and in the pastures of P. maximum cv Mombaça used for Experiments 2 and 3. The pastures were examined at the start of the raining season, 15, 30, 45, and 60 days after been cut. Mean concentrations of non structural carbohydrates (NSC) in 36 samples at 15, 30, 45 and 60 days of regrowth were 19.15%, 19.36%, 10.61% and 12,9%, respectively. The concentrations of NSC at 15 days after cutting were more than twice the concentrations reported in other Brazilian regions, suggesting that colic in horses in P. maximum pastures, in the Northern (Amazon) region are due to high concentrations of non NSC during growing of the pastures on the raining season, causing a fermentative disturb followed by gas production, abdominal dilatation and colic.

O trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar algumas variáveis estruturais e bromatológicas de Panicum maximum Jacq cv. Massai submetido a quatro doses de nitrogênio (0, 40, 80 e120 mg/dm3) e três momentos de aplicação após o corte (um, três, e sete dias), divididos em três cortes, em um esquema fatorial 4 x 3, em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. O incremento nas taxas de aparecimento foliar (TApF), alongamento foliar (TAIF) e aparecimento de perfilhos (TApP), no número de folhas vivas (NFV), no comprimento final da folha (CFF), na densidade populacional de perfilhos (DPP), na produção de matéria seca de folha total (MSFT) e nos teores de proteína bruta (PB), foi de 79%, 115%, 42%, 23%, 48%, 65%, 770% e 35%, respectivamente para a dose de 120 mg/dm3 em relação à ausência de adubação nitrogenada. O filocrono (fil), a duração de vida da folha (DVF), a fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e a fibra em detergente acido (FDA), apresentaram decréscimo de 58%, 47%, 6% e 9%, respectivamente, com a adição de N. A taxa de alongamento de colmo (TAlC) não respondeu a adubação nitrogenada. Apenas o CFF, a TAlC e a MSFT responderam às épocas de aplicação de N após o corte, com valores pouco expressivos. A adubação nitrogenada exerce efeito positivo sobre as variáveis estudadas, porém novos estudos devem ser conduzidos para a definição da época de adubação de N após o corte, em que o nutriente seja melhor aproveitado pelas plantas.<br>This work was carried out to evaluate same morphogenic, structural, bromatologic and productive variables of the Panicum maximum Jacq cv. Massai in response to four nitrogen doses (0, 40, 80 and 120 mg/dm3) and with three application times after cutting (one, three and seven days) in a 4 x 3 factorial treatment combination, in a completely randomized design, with four replications. The increase in therates of leaf appearance (LAR), leaf elongation (LER) and tillering (TR), number of live leaves (NLL), final leaf length (FLL), tiller population density (TPD), dry matter total leaf production (DMTLP) and crude protein (CP) levels was 79%, 115%, 42%, 23%, 48%, 65%, 770% and 35%, respectively for the dose of 120 mg/dm3 regarding the absence of fertilization. The phyllochron (phy) showed a decrease of 58%, the leaf life span (LLS) of 47%, the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of 6% and acid detergent fiber (ADF) of 9%, with N addition. The stem elongation rate (SER) didnot respond to nitrogen fertilization. Only the FLL, the SER and DMTLP responded times of N application after cutting, with little significant values. Nitrogen fertilization has a positive effect on the variables studied, but news studies should be conducted to better define the time of N application after cutting, for better utilization of this nutrient by plants.

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar cenários futuros de produção de forragem em pastagens de Panicum maximum cv. Tanzânia no Estado de São Paulo, baseados nos modelos climáticos ETA-CPTEC e PRECIS, e discutir os impactos potenciais das mudanças climáticas globais sobre a pecuária na região. Foram realizadas simulações de taxa de acúmulo de matéria seca utilizando-se um modelo de estimativa de produção considerando o acúmulo de graus-dia e a introdução da variável armazenamento de água no solo como fator de penalização do modelo para as condições de sequeiro. Os dados gerados foram espacializados para a geração dos mapas de cenário atual e futuros conjuntamente com a análise dos cenários climáticos com base nas emissões de gases do efeito estufa, cenário de baixa, média e alta emissão, projetados pelos modelos climáticos para os anos de 2025 e 2055. Concluiu-se que nos cenários futuros de produção, as mudanças climáticas irão favorecer o estabelecimento do capim-tanzânia no Estado de São Paulo em áreas que atualmente são limitantes ao seu desenvolvimento e ocorrerá um aumento de produção nas áreas atuais de exploração. A pecuária no Estado de São Paulo poderá se beneficiar com as mudanças climáticas pela influência positiva no crescimento de pastagens de capim-tanzânia.<br>This study aimed to evaluate future production scenarios of tanzânia guineagrass (Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania) in São Paulo State, based on climate models ETA-CPTEC and PRECIS, and discuss the potential impacts of global climate changes around the livestock in the region. Was simulated dry matter accumulation rate using a production estimative model considering the accumulation of degrees-day and an introduction of the variable soil water storage as a penalization factor in the model for rainfed conditions. The data was spatialized for the generation of actual and future production scenarios together with analysis of the climatic scenarios based on greenhouse gases emissions, low, medium and high emissions scenarios, projected for the years 2025 to 2055. It was concluded that future production scenarios with the predicted climate changes will favor the development of guineagrass in the São Paulo State especially in currently limited areas for development and will occur an increase in production from current exploration areas. The livestock in the São Paulo State may benefit from climate change by the positive influence on the growth of the guineagrass.

Tanzania-1), however there is no information about the damage produced by this disease. The aim of this work was to evaluate the damage caused by B. maydis in the amount and quality of the tanzania-1 grass production. Initially a diagrammatic scale was elaborated for the disease evaluation and afterwards was made an assay in greenhouse. Tanzania-1 grass plants was cultivated in tubes of PVC (50 cm of height x 15 cm of diameter) containing a mixture of soil and sand (3:1). Four treatments were used (water and 102, 104 and 106 conidia/ml) for obtaining different levels of disease, with seven repetitions. Severity and number of tillers were evaluated weekly. After four weeks was evaluated the weight of the fresh matter of leaves (FM), percentage of dry matter (PDM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF). The diagrammatic scale presented the following severity levels: 0.4; 1; 3; 6; 13 and 26%. The severity of inoculated plants varied from 0 to 20%. The disease reduced significanthy the tillering and FM after the second evaluation (P <0.05). There was not significant correlation among the variables PDM, ADF and the area under disease progress curve (AUDPC). However, there were positive (P<0.01) and negative (P <0.05) correlations among CP and NDF, respectively, with AUDPC, as possible result of the activity of the pathogen. These results showed that B. maydis inhibits the development of the tanzania-1 grass and it promotes alteration in the quality of the forage, but further studies are necessary to understand the involved mechanisms<br>A mancha foliar causada por Bipolaris maydis representa uma das principais doenças da gramínea forrageira Panicum maximum cv. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o dano causado por B. maydis na quantidade e qualidade da produção do capim Tanzânia-1. Inicialmente elaborou-se uma escala diagramática para a avaliação da doença e em seguida realizou-se ensaio em casa de vegetação. Plantas de capim Tanzânia-1 foram cultivadas em tubos de PVC (50cm de altura x 15 cm de diâmetro) contendo mistura solo/areia (3:1). Foram realizados quatro tratamentos (água e 102, 104 e 106 conídios/ml) para obtenção de diferentes níveis de doença, com sete repetições. Foram realizadas avaliações semanais da severidade e do número de perfilhos. Após quatro semanas avaliou-se o peso da matéria fresca de folhas (MF), porcentagem de matéria seca (PMS), proteína bruta (PB), fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e fibra em detergente ácido (FDA). A escala diagramática apresentou os seguintes níveis de severidade: 0,4; 1; 3; 6; 13 e 26%. A severidade nas plantas inoculadas variou de 0 a 20%. A doença reduziu significativamente o perfilhamento e MF a partir da segunda avaliação (P<0,05). Não houve correlação significativa entre as variáveis PMS, FDA e a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD). No entanto, houve correlação positiva (P<0,01) e negativa (P<0,05) entre PB e FDN, respectivamente, com a AACPD, como possível resultado da atividade do patógeno. Estes resultados indicam que B. maydis inibe o desenvolvimento do capim Tanzânia-1 e promove alteração na qualidade da forragem, mas maiores estudos são necessários para compreender os mecanismos envolvidos

The objective was to use the comparative morphogenesis of different forage grass plant cultivars in order to identify some characteristics that could enhance the current protocols used to evaluate and select forage plants. Treatments corresponded to 10 grass cultivars, eight belonging to the Brachiaria genus and two to the Panicum genus, all evaluated under continuous growth condition. The experimental design used was a complete randomised block with three replications and response-variables studied were: tiller height; tiller morphogenetic and structural characteristics; number of leaves per tiller (emerged, live and dead); tiller appearance, death and survival rates; and tiller demography. Tiller height of the two Panicum cultivars was higher than all the Brachiaria cultivars, except the Xaraés cultivar of B. brizantha. The lowest value of tiller height was recorded for the Tupi cultivar of B. humidicola, with the other Brachiaria cultivars ranking in intermediate positions. Cultivars differed in relation to number of days to flowering and could be separated into two groups: (1) Late flowering cultivars: Mombaça, Tanzânia, Capiporã and Xaraés; (2) Early flowering cultivars: Marandu, Piatã, Arapoty, Basilisk, Tupi and Humidicola Comum. The Tupi cultivar of B. humidicola showed the highest rate of leaf appearance (LAR) and the lowest rate of leaf elongation (LER) and phyllochron. Large phyllochron values were recorded for cultivars Capiporã, Xaraés and Piatã. Highest values of leaf elongation rate were recorded for the two Panicum cultivars and the lowest for cultivars Humidicola Comum, Basilisk and Tupi. The cultivar Tupi of B. humidicola and Capiporã of B. brizantha showed high and low stem elongation rates (SER), respectively. Leaf lifespan was lowest for the Tupi cultivar, followed by cultivars Humidicola Comum and Arapoty in relation to cultivars Piatã, Xaraés, Capiporã, Mombaça and Tanzânia, indicating higher tissue turnover on the former three cultivars. There was no difference among cultivars in rates of leaf senescence. The number of live leaves per tiller (NLL) varied with grass cultivar, with Tupi being the cultivar with the highest recorded value. In general, considering the pattern of variation in NLL, the B. brizantha cultivars showed a similar behaviour to the Panicum cultivars, and B. decumbens similar to the B. humidicola cultivars. Rates of tiller appearance, death and survival varied with grass cultivars, with higher tillering potential being associated with cultivars with high leaf appearance rates. Tiller death was higher for the B. humidicola cultivars and B. decumbens cv. Basilisk, and tiller survival higher for cultivars Xaraés, Capiporã and Mombaça, which were not different from cultivars Marandu, Arapoty and Tanzânia. There was also difference among cultivars in relation to tiller demography. In general, tiller appearance was initially high, and the second and/or third generation of tillers contributed significantly for tiller population at the end of the experiment. A principal component analysis (PCA) carried out initially on the 17 response-variables studied, showed the potential for grouping cultivars according to functional characteristics. A second PCA was carried out with a lesser number of variables, obtained by suppressing those that were calculated as derived variables. This new PCA sorted all the grass cultivars into three functional groups: (1) Mombaça, Tanzânia and Xaraés; (2) Piatã, Capiporã, Marandu and Arapoty; and (3) Basilisk, Humidicola Comum and Tupi. Among the eight response-variables used in the analysis, the most efficient in discriminating groups and cultivars were leaf appearance and elongation rate, final leaf length and tiller mortality rate. This four variables explained around 85% of the total variation in the data set, suggesting the potential for using morphogenesis as part of the protocols used for evaluating and selecting new forage plant cultivars.<br>O experimento deste estudo foi conduzido em área do Departamento de Zootecnia da Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV), em Viçosa, MG, e teve início no dia 30/12/2004, estendendo-se até 30/06/2005. O objetivo foi utilizar a morfogênese comparativa de diferentes cultivares de plantas forrageiras, de forma a identificar características que pudessem melhorar o atual protocolo de avaliação e seleção de plantas forrageiras. Os tratamentos corresponderam a 10 cultivares, sendo oito pertencentes ao gênero Brachiaria e dois ao Panicum, todos avaliados em condições de crescimento livre. O delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos completos ao acaso com três repetições. Avaliaram-se: altura, características morfogênicas e estruturais de perfilhos, variação do número de folhas nos perfilhos (número de folhas surgidas, vivas e mortas), as taxas de aparecimento, mortalidade e sobrevivência de perfilhos e o padrão demográfico de perfilhamento. Os cultivares pertencentes ao gênero Panicum foram os que apresentaram maior altura, sendo que a B. brizantha cv. Xaraés se mostrou semelhante a esse gênero. No outro extremo, plantas forrageiras de menor porte foram identificadas, dentre elas B. humidicola cultivar Tupi. Os outros cultivares do gênero Brachiaria se posicionaram de maneira intermediária. Houve diferença entre os cultivares com relação ao número de dias para o florescimento e separação deles em dois grupos: (1) Florescimento tardio: Mombaça, Tanzânia, Capiporã e Xaraés; (2) Florescimento precoce: Marandu, Piatã, Arapoty, Basilisk, Tupi e Humidicola Comum. O cultivar Tupi apresentou maior taxa de aparecimento de folhas (TApF), bem como uma das menores TAlF e menor Filocrono (Filoc). Maiores valores de filocrono foram registrados nos cultivares Capiporã, Xaraés e Piatã. Valores mais altos de TAlF foram encontrados entre os cultivares de P. maximum e mais baixos nos cultivares Humidicola Comum, Basilisk e Tupi. A B. humidicola cv. Tupi apresentou elevada taxa de alongamento de colmo (TAlC), e B. brizantha cv. Capiporã teve os menores valores dessa variável. A duração de vida das folhas (DVF) foi menor no cultivar Tupi, seguido pelos cultivares Humidicola Comum e Arapoty, relativamente aos cultivares Piatã, Xaraés, Capiporã, Mombaça e Tanzânia, demonstrando maior renovação de tecidos nos três primeiros cultivares. Com relação à taxa de senescência de folhas (TSeF), não se encontrou diferença entre os cultivares, sendo o número de folhas vivas (NFV) variável entre estes. Tupi foi o cultivar que apresentou o maior NFV por perfilho. De maneira geral, na variação do número de folhas nos perfilhos foi observado que as B. brizantha apresentaram comportamento parecido com os cultivares de P. maximum e B. decumbens mais próximo das B. humidicola. As taxas de aparecimento, mortalidade e sobrevivência de perfilhos variaram entre os cultivares estudados, de forma que genótipos com alta TApF demonstraram maior potencial em emitir perfilhos. No que se refere à taxa de mortalidade de perfilhos, os cultivares de B. humidicola e B. decumbens cv. Basilisk apresentaram os maiores valores. Maiores taxas de sobrevivência de perfilhos foram registradas para os cultivares Xaraés, Capiporã e Mombaça, não diferindo dos cultivares Marandu, Arapoty e Tanzânia. Com relação à demografia de perfilhos, observou-se que ela variou substancialmente entre as gramíneas. Verificou-se também que o aparecimento de perfilhos foi inicialmente elevado, sendo que a segunda e, ou, terceira geração apresentaram importante contribuição no número total de perfilhos de todos os cultivares ao final do período de avaliação. Uma análise multivariada, denominada análise de componentes principais, feita originalmente com as 17 variáveis estudadas, demonstrou ser interessante para agrupar cultivares, segundo características funcionais. Porém, com o objetivo de reduzir o número de variáveis de forma a explicar a maior proporção possível da variação no banco de dados, uma nova análise foi realizada, eliminando-se as variáveis altamente correlacionadas. A nova análise resultou na identificação de três grupos funcionais, sendo um formado pelos cultivares Mombaça, Xaraés e Tanzânia, um segundo formado pelos cultivares Piatã, Capiporã, Marandu e Arapoty e um terceiro pelos cultivares Basilisk, Humidicola Comum e Tupi. Dentre as oito variáveis utilizadas, aquelas que se mostraram mais eficientes na discriminação de cultivares foram TApF, TAlF, CFiF e TMNTo. Nesse caso, cerca de 85% da variação total foi explicada pela variação nessas quatro variáveis, indicando o potencial de aplicação da morfogênese em estudos desta natureza.

Programa de P?s-Gradua??o em Zootecnia, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, 2017.<br>The objective was to evaluate the coefficient of repeatability of the agronomic traits and to estimate the breeding value of morphogenic characteristics to stablish morphofunctional groups in the clustering analysis of Tocher in Panicum maximum genotypes. The repeatability coefficients were estimated by four methods: analysis of variance (ANOVA), structural analysis based on the correlation matrix (EACOR), principal component analysis based on the variance and covariance?s matrix (PCCOV) and principal component analysis based on the correlation matrix (PCCOR). To the genotypic stabilization study, the ANOVA and PCCOR were used. To the morphogenic evaluation, the characteristics were estimated: leaf appearance rate (LAR), phillochron (PHC), leaf elongation rate (LER), leaf senescence rate (LSR), number of live leaves (NLL), leaf life spam (LLS), leaf final length (LFL), stem elongation rate (SER), average number of tillers (ANT) and leaf:stem ratio (LSR). To total dry matter were observed repeatability coefficients ranging from 0.3500 to 0.4300 by the ANOVA and PCCOR methods, respectively. High coefficients of repeatability were estimated to leaf dry mass too. Low coefficients of repeatability were observed to percentage of leaves, stems and leaf:stem ratio. In the genotypic stabilization of total dry mass the higher coefficients were observed between the 6 and 7th harvest and between the 5 and 8th harvest, while the lowest coefficients were observed when the harvests 3 to 4 and 1 to 2 were considered in both methods. To leaf:stem ratio the higher coefficients were observed to harvests between 6 and 7 in the ANOVA method and 1 to 2 in the PCCOR method. In general, the combination between the 6 and 7th harvests also improves the repeatability and determination coefficients, optimizing the stabilization of the genotypes to dry mass and percentage of leaf and stems. In the study of genetic parameters and clustering, were observed significant effect to genetic variance component only to LER, LFL and LSR. In spite of this the characteristic SER and NLL had CVg higher than CVr. The characteristics LAR. PHC, LLS and LSR had CVg/CVr above the unity. High CVg/CVr ratio were observed to LSR, NLL, SER, LER and LFL, so that the highest coefficient observed to LSR. After the clustering analysis was found five morphofunctional groups. The groups with higher LER were 3, 5 and 1 with breeding values above the general mean. The group 4 had lowest LER. The groups 2 and 5 had the highest SER and the highest LSR was observed to the group 4. The group 3 showed high LFL. It was possible to conclude that the total and leaf dry mass have higher coefficient of repeatability, indicating better accuracy in the identification of the superior genotypes of P. maximum. In the genotypic stabilization, the higher coefficient and determination were observed to the harvests realized in the rainy period. The morphogenic characteristics that have the highest genetic variance have more possibility of gains with the selection and the traits with low CVg/CVr ratio need more environmental control. The groups 3, 5 and 1 have high potential to forage production duly its high leaf elongation rate.

The treatments were constituted by four CM inclusion levels (0%, 10%, 15%, 20%). The average levels of dry matter in grass mombasa silages differed depending on cottonseed meal levels, ranging from 22.69 to 31.93. The levels of crude protein ranged from 12.51 to 22.45, and significant differences were observed at the same time promoting a reduction in the levels of insoluble fiber and neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent insoluble, thus keeping within the recommended standards, especially the 20% of CM with the highest level and lower losses by gases and effluents. The levels of hydrogenic potential (pH) ranged from 4.88 to 5.17. The nitrogen ammonia content (N-NH3), were within acceptable parameters with 1.30% to 2.59%. The average levels of soluble carbohydrates ranged from 4.60% to 8.90%, with no significant difference between the 10% and 15% levels of CM (P>0.05). The levels of lactic acid, acetic, propionic and butyric ranged from 0.2682 to 1.482; from 0.1759 to 0.3216; 0.011 to 0.0241 and from 0.0012 to 0.00162 respectively, and showed statistical difference (P>0.05) between the levels of cottonseed meal. The “in situ” dry matter degradability (DM) and crude protein (CP), neutral detergent insoluble fiber (NDIF), insoluble acid detergent fiber (IADF), were significantly influenced by the levels of inclusion of cottonseed meal (P<0.05), and highlighted the inclusion level of 20% of cottonseed meal that showed significant levels of disappearance in DM, CP, NDIF And IADF, showing that the acceptable level of cottonseed meal as addition to grass mombasa.<br>Avaliou-se a cinética da degradabilidade “in situ” da silagem de capim-mombaça com níveis de inclusão de farelo de algodão. Os tratamentos utilizados foram constituídos por quatro níveis de inclusão de FA (0%, 10%, 15%, 20%). Os teores médios da matéria seca nas silagens de capim-mombaça diferiram em função dos níveis do farelo de algodão, com variação de 22,69 a 31,93. Os teores da proteína bruta variaram de 12,51 a 22,45, e foram observadas diferenças significativas, ao mesmo tempo em que promoveu redução nos teores de fibras insolúveis em detergente neutro e fibras insolúveis em detergente ácido, mantendo assim dentro dos padrões recomendados, com destaque para o 20% de FA que apresentou maior nível e menores perdas por gases e efluentes. A degradabilidade “in situ” da matéria seca (MS) proteína bruta (PB) fibra insolúvel em detergente neutro (FDN) e fibra insolúvel em detergente ácido (FDA), foram significativamente influenciados pelos níveis de inclusão do farelo de algodão (P<0,05), tendo em destaque a inclusão do nível 20% do farelo de algodão que apresentou teores significativos de desaparecimento na MS, PB, FDN e FDA, mostrando ser o nível aceitável de farelo de algodão como adição para o capim-mombaça.

The experiment was conducted in the Forage Sector of Animal Science Department of Universidade Federal de Viçosa, from November 2007 to March 2008. The used design was in complete randomized blocks with two replications in a factorial arrangement with four nitrogen supplies (0, 80, 160, 320 kg.ha-1 N) and three plant densities (9, 25 e 49 plant.m-2). The plots were cut at 25 cm from soil level when the canopy reached 95 % of light interception. The response variables evaluated were the leaf appearance rate, phyllochron, leaf elongation rate, stem elongation rate, senescence rate, number of live leafs, leaf life duration and number of total, basilar and aerial tillers per clump. In the tillering dynamics, were evaluated the appearance and mortality rates of total, basilar and aerial tillers. The leaf appearance and stem elongation rate were influenced linear and positively by the nitrogen levels, while the phyllochron and life leaf duration varied linear and negatively. The leaf elongation rate showed exponential response to nitrogen fertilization and quadratic response to plant densities, with bigger rates being observed in the 320 kg.ha-1 N dose and 49 plant.m-2 density. The senescense rate and number of live leafs were not influenced by the factors evaluated, presenting 4.7 leafs.tiller-1 and 0.56 cm.day-1, respectively. The number of total, basilar and aerial tillers per clump showed exponential response to the nitrogen dose and quadratic response to plants density. The nitrogen increased the number in all tiller classes, while the plant density influenced negatively, with less tillers in the 25 and 49 plants.m-2 densities. The tillering dynamics were influenced quadratically by nitrogen, plant density, and by the interaction between these factors. The total and basilar tiller appearance were influenced quadratically by nitrogen dose, with bigger values had been observed on the 160 and 320 kg.ha-1 N doses. The plant density influenced quadratically the total tiller appearance, which was higher in the 25 plant.m-2 density. On the other hand, the aerial tiller appearance rate was not influenced by the nitrogen doses and plant densities. The total tiller mortality rate was influenced quadratically by the nitrogen doses and plant densities, in a way that it was estimated less mortality in 32 plant.m-2 density and highest mortality in 212 kg.ha-1 N dose. In addition, the basilar tiller mortality rate was influenced quadratically by the plant densities, with less mortality observed in 32 plant.m-2 density. The aerial tiller mortality rate was influenced linearly by the nitrogen doses, with highest mortality in the 320 kg.ha-1dose. The nitrogen fertilization increases, in this way, leafs and tiller production in established tanzaniagrass cut on the 95 % canopy light interception. Nevertheless, the density influence on the morphogenetic characteristics is little outstanding, with its main effects on the number of tillers per clump, which decreases under high densities. Either the plant density or the nitrogen supply influence the tiller dynamics of tanzaniagrass. The appearance and mortality rates are increased under high nitrogen levels. The tiller appearance rate is bigger in intermediary densities, while the mortality rate decreases under high plant densities. Thus, pastures established under low and intermediary densities show more intense tiller renovation.<br>Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito da adubação nitrogenada e da densidade de plantas nas características morfogênicas e estruturais do capim-tanzânia (Panicum maximum Jacq.) estabelecido. O experimento foi conduzido em área pertencente ao Setor Forragicultura do Departamento de Zootecnia da Universidade Federal de Viçosa no período de novembro de 2007 a março de 2008. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos completos casualizados, com 12 tratamentos e duas repetições em esquema fatorial 4 × 3, com quatro doses de nitrogênio (ausência de aplicação, 80, 160 e 320 kg.ha-1.ano) e três densidades de plantas (9, 25 e 49 plantas.m-2). O corte das plantas foi realizado a 25 cm do solo quando o dossel interceptava 95% da luz incidente. Foram avaliados a taxa de aparecimento foliar, o filocrono, a taxa de alongamento foliar, a taxa de alongamento de pseudocolmo, a taxa de senescência foliar, o número de folhas vivas, a duração da vida das folhas e o número de perfilhos totais, basilares e aéreos por touceira. Na dinâmica de perfilhamento, foram avaliadas as taxas de aparecimento e mortalidade dos perfilhos totais, basilares e aéreos. As taxas de aparecimento foliar e alongamento de pseudocolmos foram influenciadas linear e positivamente pela adubação com nitrogênio, enquanto o filocrono e a duração da vida das folhas foram influenciados de forma linear negativa. A taxa de alongamento foliar apresentou resposta exponencial à adubação nitrogenada e resposta quadrática às densidades de planta, com maiores taxas sendo observadas na dose de 320 kg.ha-1 e na densidade de 49 plantas.m-2. A taxa de senescência foliar e o número de folhas vivas não foram influenciados pelos fatores avaliados e apresentaram valores médios de 4,7 folhas.perfilho-1 e 0,56 cm.dia-1, respectivamente. Os números de perfilhos totais, basilares e aéreos por touceira foram influenciados de forma exponencial pelas doses de nitrogênio e de forma quadrática pelas densidades de planta. O nitrogênio promoveu aumento no número de perfilhos de todas classes, enquanto a densidade influenciou negativamente essa variável, de modo que os menores números de perfilhos totais, basilares e aéreos foram observados nas densidades de 25 e 49 plantas.m-2. As doses de nitrogênio, a densidade de plantas e a interação entre esses fatores tiveram efeito sobre a dinâmica de perfilhamento. As taxas de aparecimento de perfilhos totais e basilares foram influenciadas quadraticamente pelas doses de nitrogênio, de modo que os maiores valores foram obtidos nas doses de 160 e 320 kg.ha-1. A densidade influenciou de forma quadrática o aparecimento de perfilhos totais, que foi maior na densidade de 25 plantas.m-2. A taxa de aparecimento de perfilhos aéreos, no entanto, não foi influenciada pelas doses de nitrogênio nem pelas densidades de plantas. A taxa de mortalidade de perfilhos totais foi influenciada de forma quadrática pelas doses de nitrogênio e pelas densidades de plantas e foi menor na densidade de 32 plantas.m-2 e maior na dose de 212 kg.ha-1 de nitrogênio. The dormancy of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) seeds may be broken by a variety of treatments, including after-ripening and stratification. This study was conducted to investigate and characterize more systematically factors affecting both after-ripening and stratification effectiveness, and the aging that can occur concomitantly with after-ripening. More than one year of after-ripening at ambient temperature and humidity was necessary for germination of newly harvested seeds to increase from as low as 5% to around 80%. After-ripening was not accelerated at temperatures above ambient for seeds stored in paper bags, which permitted the loss of seed moisture at the increased temperatures. Both after-ripening and aging accelerated with increases in temperature (5 to 60°C) and seed moisture content (50 to 130 g kg-1), except that there was evidence of a moisture optimum for after-ripening that shifted downward as temperature increased. For many seedlots, storage at 60 60°C and 50 g kg-1 seed moisture content for about 1 mo broke most of the dormancy and resulted in acceptably low numbers of abnormal (aged) seedlings. Decreases in germinability caused by post-stratification drying of switchgrass seeds (described herein as "reversion", in which the reverted seeds could be made germinable again by further stratification) increased as the desiccation increased. Revertibility decreased as stratification or after-ripening time increased. Stratification and after-ripening worked additively to release switchgrass seeds from dormancy. Reversion (germination with stratification minus germination after stratification followed by drying) may reveal seedlot differences and changes over time and moisture content that can not be seen otherwise. Imbibed, dormant seeds placed at 21 or 30 °C were induced into deeper dormancy, as indicated by length of stratification needed to break the dormancy. Dormancy deepened more as storage temperature and time increased for imbibed seeds. There are transitional temperature and seed moisture ranges where opposing processes (aging vs. after-ripening, stratification vs. dormancy deepening) appeared to overlap or surpass one another. Switchgrass seeds, either on a single seed level, or on the population level, responded continuously to changing temperature and moisture conditions. Less aging was observed for switchgrass seeds stored in N<SUB>2</SUB>. After-ripening of switchgrass seemed not to be influenced by N<SUB>2</SUB> or air. In sum, switchgrass is revealed to be remarkably plastic in its ability to move toward both greater germinability and greater dormancy.<br>Ph. D.

Porém, limitações nutricionais, em especial do nitrogênio, contribuem para a baixa produção de forragem nas áreas manejadas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da aplicação de fontes e doses de nitrogênio nos atributos químicos do solo, no desenvolvimento e extração de nutrientes do capim-mombaça. O experimento foi desenvolvido entre outubro de 2011 e abril de 2012, no Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo campus Santa Teresa. Foi utilizada uma pastagem já estabelecida, onde cada parcela ocupou uma área de 6 m2. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, com três repetições, em esquema fatorial 3 x 6, sendo três fertilizantes nitrogenados (uréia, sulfato de amônio e nitrato de cálcio) e seis doses de nitrogênio (0, 120, 240, 360, 480, 600 kg N ha-1), aplicados durante o período experimental, totalizando 54 unidades experimentais. As doses de nitrogênio foram divididas em sete aplicações, sendo os tratamentos aplicados a cada 28 dias, sempre após o corte da forrageira, totalizando sete cortes durante o período experimental de 196 dias. Em cada corte, a planta forrageira foi coletada com auxílio de um quadrado de ferro de 50 x 50 cm e cortada com tesoura de aço. O material coletado em cada parcela foi levado à estufa com circulação de ar, para determinação da matéria pré-seca. Após a secagem, as amostras foram moídas para determinação da matéria seca. O material moído foi encaminhado para o laboratório para avaliação dos teores dos macronutrientes no tecido vegetal e esses resultados foram utilizados na quantificação da extração de nutrientes pela forrageira. Foi ainda, ao final do experimento, coletadas com o auxílio de um trado, amostras de solo na profundidade de 0-20 e 20-40 cm, para avaliar o efeito da aplicação dos tratamentos sobre os atributos químicos do solo nas diferentes profundidades. Referente à produção de forragem, os resultados mostram que o capim-mombaça é responsivo à adubação nitrogenada e sua resposta em produção de matéria seca e número de perfilhos para uma mesma dose de nitrogênio varia em função da fonte utilizada. Os melhores resultados para as variáveis avaliadas foram obtidos com o uso do nitrato de cálcio como fonte de nitrogênio. Os resultados das análises de solo demonstraram que o sulfato de amônio apresentou elevado potencial de acidificação do solo. A redução provocada no pH do solo resultou em alterações nos teores de alumínio trocável, acidez potencial e na disponibilidade de fósforo no solo. Além disso, a aplicação de elevadas doses de nitrogênio na forma de sulfato de amônio e nitrato de cálcio, promoveu a lixiviação de bases, especialmente do potássio, para a camada de 20-40 cm. O manejo do pastejo tem grande influência sobre produtividade animal a pasto, resposta à adubação e longevidade da pastagem, seja em sistemas adubados ou não adubados. É necessário conhecer o manejo do pastejo mais adequado para cada sistema. Neste estudo em Piracicaba SP, Brasil, foram analisadas respostas de Panicum maximum cv. Tanzânia adubado (A) e não adubado (NA), à manejos do pastejo com interrupção da rebrota aos 95% de interceptação luminosa (I.L.) e três severidades de desfolha (alturas de resíduo de 20cm, 30cm, e 50cm). As pastagens adubadas receberam 572 kgN.ha-1, 472 kgK2O.ha-1 e 230 kgP2O5.ha-1, e as pastagens não adubadas não receberam nenhum tipo de fertilização. O pastejo foi realizada por bovinos. O delineamento foi o de blocos completos casualizados, com 6 tratamentos (A20, A30, A50, NA20, NA30 e NA50) e 5 repetições, totalizando 30 unidades experimentais (piquetes) de 400 m² cada. O período de avalições foi de julho de 2010 a março de 2011. Não foi possível atingir 95% de I.L. nos tratamentos NA20 e NA30, que tiveram entrada aos 91% e 89% respectivamente, nos demais tratamentos a entrada dos animais ficou entre 94% e 96% de I.L.. O intervalo entre pastejos do tratamento NA50 foi de 130 dias, e dos tratamentos adubados 90d, 29d e 17d, para os períodos de inverno primavera e verão respectivamente. Não houve diferença de alturas de entrada nos tratamentos não adubados (91cm). A altura de entrada do tratamento A50 foi maior que ás dos tratamentos A30 e A20 (74cm x 56cm e 50cm respectivamente). A massa de forragem em pré pastejo variou entre 3596 e 9518 kgMS.ha-1, apresentando maior proporção de material morto e menor proporção de folhas nos resíduos de 50cm. A massa seca total em pós pastejo foi maior quanto maior a altura de resíduo (1224, 1926 e 5556 kgMS.ha-1 para os resíduos de 20cm, 30cm e 50cm respectivamente). A massa seca de folhas verdes em pós pastejo foi maior nos resíduos de 50cm (248, 470 e 1616 kgMS.ha-1 para os resíduos de 20cm, 30cm e 50cm respectivamente). A proporção de folhas no resíduo não variou entre alturas nos tratamentos adubados (28%), mas foi decrescente conforme reduções no resíduo dos não adubados (34%, 22% e 13% nos resíduos de 50cm, 30cm e 20cm respectivamente). O acúmulo total dos tratamentos adubados e não adubados foi de 19514 e 8897 kgMS.ha-1 respectivamente. O acúmulo dos pastos adubados foi de 3204, 7484 e 9703 kgMS.ha-1 no inverno, primavera e verão respectivamente. A proporção de perdas em relação ao cúmulo foi maior nos resíduos de 50cm em relação aos de 20cm e 30cm (46% x 30% e 29% respectivamente). A densidade populacional de perfilhos foi de 672 e 521 perfilhos.m-2 em pastos adubados e não adubados respectivamente. A infestação por plantas invasoras foi maior nos resíduos de 20cm, independentemente da adubação. É possível que o manejo do pastejo mais adequado seja de alturas pré e pós pastejo mais altas sem adubação, e mais baixas com adubação intensiva.<br>In pasture based production systems, grazing management has great influence over productivity, responses to fertilization and pasture longevity. There may be differences between best ways of managing the grazing process in tropical grasses under different fertility conditions. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of defoliation severity associated with defoliation frequency based in light interception (95%) over Panicum maximum cv. Tanzânia grasslands under hi and low fertilization. The experiment was conducted at São Paulo State University, Piracicaba SP Brazil. Treatments were factorial combinations of 2 fertility conditions, fertilized (F) and unfertilized (UF) grasslands and 3 defoliation intensities (20cm, 30cm and 50cm post grazing heights). Fertilized treatments received 572 kg N.ha-1, 472 kg K2O.ha-1 e 230 kg P2O5.ha-1, and unfertilized didnt receive any kind of fertilization. Beef cattle steers were used as defoliation agents. Treatments were distributed among the 30 experimental units (400 m² paddocks) according to a complete and randomized block design, with 6 treatments (F20, F30, F50, NF20, NF30 and NF50) and 5 replications. The evaluation period was from July, 2010 to March 2011. Unfertilized treatments with the lower post grazing heights (20cm and 30cm) could not reach 95% of light interception due to it leaves morphology (upright) and small tiller population. Grazing intervals were the same among fertilized treatments in the summer (17 days). Pasture height in the moment that it achieved 95% of light interception were higher for the unfertilized grasslands, and for the higher post grazing treatments. Smaller post grazing heights were related with greater leaf and less dead material proportion in the pre grazing forage mass. There was no effect of the residual heights over the leaf proportion in the post grazing mass considering the fertilized pastures. Lower defoliation intensities were related with bigger proportions of forage losses due to grazing process. Fertilized treatments produced 19514 kg of DM.ha-1 while the unfertilized treatments produced 8897 kg of DM.ha-1 in 198 days, and there was no influence of residual heights over this characteristic. Tiller densities were affected only by fertilization and not by the grazing intensity. However, the grazing intensity had effect in to the weed appearance.

The K, P, and Ca uptake by the grass and soil K increased with whey application.

<p>Switchgrass (<i>Panicum virgatum</i> L.) has become an important bioenergy crop. Warm, winter temperatures in the southeastern USA allow for fall establishment and winter growth of cool-season legumes that may provide nitrogen to the spring perenniating crop of switchgrass. Data indicates variation due to year and location, but hairy vetch plots provided a greater nitrogen percentage in the subsequent biomass production of switchgrass. In 2011, switchgrass fertilized with 56 kg ha^&minus;1 N was greater than the control and in 2012 it was greater than the 28 kg ha^&minus;1 N treatment. Variation around the means prevented clear separation among other treatments. The data also showed that hairy vetch had the greatest volunteer frequency and cover percentage throughout the year. Data from the Dairy Farm showed no differences in yields due to a lack of field management the previous years and only ball clover increased its coverage over time. </p>

Os sintomas visíveis, ao final do tratamento, foram clorose nas folhas em expansão e clorose e necrose nas folhas totalmente expandidas. Na microscopia eletrônica de varredura, a superfície adaxial não apresentou alterações na cera epicuticular entre os tratamentos e estádios foliares. Na superfície abaxial houve leve redução da cera epicuticular com o desenvolvimento foliar e com o tratamento com flúor. Em alguns casos, a face abaxial das folhas totalmente expandidas (com necrose) apresentava depressão da superfície com perda do contorno das células. Foi observado na varredura enrugamento em ambas as superfícies epidérmicas, nos diferentes estádios foliares e tratamentos, o que, provavelmente, não foi uma resposta ao flúor. Nos cortes transversais da região com clorose (folha em expansão) e abaixo da necrose (folhas totalmente expandidas), observaram-se as seguintes alterações nos cloroplastos das células da bainha: redução do tamanho; formato tendendo a lenticular, diferindo da forma irregular encontrada no controle; redução da quantidade e tamanho de grãos de amido; aumento do número e tamanho dos plastoglóbulos; e estroma mais denso e estrutura de grana e tilacóides mais evidentes. Nos cloroplastos das células do mesófilo houve leve aumento do retículo periférico, e o aumento do número e tamanho dos plastoglóbulos foi mais evidente na região abaixo da necrose. Na região da necrose, todas as células apresentavam-se plasmolisadas. Adjacentes à necrose, os sintomas foram semelhantes aos que ocorreram na região da clorose e abaixo da necrose, no entanto mais intensos e com início de desorganização da estrutura de grana e tilacóides. O conjunto de alterações causadas pelo flúor em P. maximum indicou que este poluente não tem uma ação específica sobre todas as espécies. Recomendam-se estudos mais detalhados para caracterizar melhor a injúria por flúor em P. maximum.<br>In order to identify ultrastructural changes in leaf surfaces and in the chloroplasts, species of Panicum maximum were treated under artificial rain with fluoride solution (15 μg.ml^-1). Visible symptons of chlorosis in expanding leaf blade and chlorosis and necrosis in totaly expanded leaf blade were observed. When observed in SEM, epicuticular wax on the adaxial surface did not change among treatments and leaf developmental stage. On the abaxial surface a slight reduction on epicuticular wax with development of leaf and with treatment with fluoride was observed. In some cases the adaxial surface of totaly expanded leaf with necrosis, presented surface depression with loss of regular cells borders. SEM observations showed wrinkled on both surfaces, leaves stages and treatments, which probably was not a fluoride response. Transversal section through chlorosis region (expanding leaf) and below of necrosis (totaly expanded leaf) showed the following changes in bundle sheath cells chloroplasts: size reduction; reduction in size and number of starch grain; increase in number and size of plastoglobulis; darkened stroma and more evident grana and thylakoids structure. A slight increase of peripheral reticulum and the increase of number and size of plastoglobulis were more evident in the region below necrosis in the mesophyll cells. The necrosis region showed plasmolisis of all cells. The symptoms aside the necrosis were similar to the chlorosis and below necrosis region, however, these necrosis symptoms were more severe and showed a begining of grana and thylakoids disorganization. The set of changes caused by fluoride in P. maximum suggested that these pollutant do not have specific action over all species. To better characterize the ultrastructural injuries caused by fluoride on P. maximum, it is suggested further studies.

The experiment was conducted at Fazenda AJR, in the municipality of Goiás, Goiás.The treatments used were composed of four levels of inclusion of SM 0%, 10%, 15% and 20%.The experimental design was completely randomized, with four treatments and four replicates.The mombasa grass featured 24.8% DM cutting time and was silage in silos, PVC minis closed during 65 days.After the opening of the minis silos were performed to determine the losses weighing through the quantification of effluent production and losses by gas.Samples were collected for further analysis of ammoniacal nitrogen, pH and soluble carbohydrates, as well as the chemical composition-mycotoxin (s), degradability in situ.The addition of the additive has increased the level of DM and was efficient in the control of effluents and gaseous losses.The additive allowed great recovery rates of DM.The addition of SM favored the increase of lactic, acetic acid and butyric acid and propionic concentrations, reflecting the improvement of the fermentation of silage profile.The addition of the SM has provided greater total carbohydrates content in all levels of inclusion.Silages containing SM had highercrude protein (CP) content, as well as lower fiber content in a neutral detergent (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF).The degradability of the DM, NDF and CP improved linearly according to the addition of SM, reaching degradabilities potential and specific degradabilities best, with the inclusion of 20% of SM.The addition of soybean meal provided silage well preserved, with minimal loss of DM and still contributed significantly to the improvement of the nutritional value of silage.<br>Foram avaliados os efeitos da adição de farelo de soja (FS) como aditivo sequestrante de umidade e fonte de nutrientes na ensilagem de capim-mombaça, em relação ao padrão fermentativo e a degradabilidade in situ das silagens com diferentes níveis de inclusão de farelo de soja.. O experimento foi conduzido na Fazenda AJR, no município de Goiás, GO. Os tratamentos utilizados foram constituídos por quatro níveis de inclusão de FS 0%, 10%, 15% e 20%. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental inteiramente ao acaso, com quatro tratamentos e quatro repetições. O capim-mombaça apresentava 24,8% de MSno momento do corte e foi ensilado em mini silos de PVC, permanecendo fechados durante 65 dias. Após a abertura dos mini silos foram realizadas pesagens para a determinação das perdas através da quantificação da produção por efluentes e das perdas por gases. Amostras foram coletadas para posteriores análises de nitrogênio amoniacal, pH e carboidratos solúveis, bem como a composição químicobromatológica, degradabilidade in situ. A adição do aditivo aumentou o teor de MS e foi eficiente no controle de perdas por efluentes e gases. O aditivo permitiu ótimos índices de recuperação de MS. A adição de FS favoreceu o aumentodas concentrações de ácido lático, acético e butírico e diminuindo as concentrações de propiônico, refletindo na melhoria do perfil fermentativo das silagens. A adição do FS proporcionou maior teor de carboidratos totais, em todos os níveis de inclusão. As silagens contendo FS apresentaram maior teor de proteína bruta (PB), além de menor teor de fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e fibra em detergente ácido (FDA). A degradabilidade da MS, FDN e PB melhorou linearmente de acordo com a adição de FS, atingindo melhores degradabilidades potenciais e degradabilidades especificas, com a inclusão de 20% de FS. A adição de farelo de soja proporcionou silagens bem conservadas, com mínimas perdas de MS e ainda contribuiu de forma significativa para a melhoria do valor nutritivo das silagens.

A espécie Panicum maximum Jacq., popularmente conhecida no Brasil como capim colonião, encontra-se entre as espécies mais utilizadas na alimentação do gado de corte. Grande parte das áreas destinadas a pastagens encontra-se estabelecida com cultivares exóticas e de reprodução clonal. O monocultivo representa sério risco para todos os sistemas de produção baseados no uso de pastagens. Nesse sentido, o melhoramento genético de forrageiras e o lançamento de novas cultivares de P. maximum surgem como alternativa para a diversificação das pastagens. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo principal contribuir para o conhecimento básico sobre a genética e a biologia molecular de P. maximum. Primeiramente, foi realizada a montagem de novo e análise do transcriptoma da espécie utilizando a metodologia de sequenciamento massivo paralelo de cDNA (RNA-seq), resultando em 38.192 unigenes, os quais foram anotados em diferentes bancos de dados. A maioria dos genes relacionados as vias de fixação de carbono C4 e de síntese de lignocelulose foram identificados. Ainda, foram identificados 5.035 marcadores microssatélites (SSR) e 346.456 marcadores do tipo single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) em todo o transcriptoma. Na segunda parte deste trabalho, foram desenvolvidos 131 novos marcadores moleculares do tipo microssatélite para P. maximum. Estes marcadores foram utilizados juntamente a 43 marcadores SSR obtidos da literatura, para construção de mapas genético-moleculares, através da genotipagem dos híbridos F1 resultantes de cruzamento intraespecífico. Os mapas de ligação cobriram 672,2 cM e 802,2 cM dos genomas dos genitores S10 e Mombaça. Estes resultados contribuem para a pesquisa associada a P. maximum e forrageiras tropicais, assim como para os programas de melhoramento genético<br>Abstract: In Brazil, livestock feeding is mainly based on cultivated pastures. Panicum maximum Jacq., also known as capim-colonião, figures among the most cultivated tropical forage plants in brazilian pastures, which are established with exotic cultivars of clonal reproduction, leading to monoculture, and consequently offering serious risks to associated production systems. One possible solution to monoculture falls on new cultivars releases, throught breeding programs, diversificating livestock pastures in Brazil. The work presented here had an objective of elucidate some basic aspects regarding the genetics and molecular biology of P. maximum. First, we conducted a de novo assembly and analysis of leaf transcriptome, throught massive parallel cDNA sequencing (RNA-seq), resulting in 38.192 unigenes, which were annotated in different databases. Genes related to C4 metabolism and lignocellulose synthesis are valuable resource to breeding programs and were identified among assembled transcripts. Thus, several putative molecular markers were located in unigenes: 5.035 microsatellites (SSR) motifs and 346.456 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) positions. Also, we developed 131 new genomic and expressed SSR markers for P. maximum. These markers were used with 43 published SSR markers to develop a genetic map. A segregating F1 population were used for such, hybrids of S10 (sexual genotype) and Mombaça (apomictic genotype) crossing. Linkage maps covered 672,2 cM and 802,2 cM of parentals genomes respectively, using 88 and 96 markers each. Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e TecnolÃgico<br>Essa pesquisa foi conduzida com o objetivo de avaliar as caracterÃsticas morfofisiolÃgicas do dossel e o desempenho bioeconÃmico de ovinos em pastagem de capim TanzÃnia com quatro nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo concentrada (0,0; 0,6; 1,2 e 1,8% PV), no perÃodo de setembro a dezembro de 2004. O experimento foi conduzido na Fazenda Experimental do Vale do Curu FEVC, pertencente à Universidade Federal do CearÃ, localizada no municÃpio de Pentecoste CE. O mÃtodo de pastejo foi o de lotaÃÃo rotativa com taxa de lotaÃÃo variÃvel, com perÃodo de ocupaÃÃo de trÃs dias e de descanso de 21 dias. A condiÃÃo residual adotada consistiu na altura de 28,0 cm. O delineamento experimental para os dados do fluxo de biomassa do dossel e para as caracterÃsticas estruturais do pasto foi o de parcelas subdivididas, com nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo sendo as parcelas e os ciclos de pastejo, as subparcelas, com trÃs e quatro repetiÃÃes (piquetes amostrais) por tratamento, respectivamente. O delineamento utilizado para os dados de comportamento animal foi o inteiramente casualizado em um arranjo fatorial (4 x 8) com seis repetiÃÃes (ovinos). Para os dados de desempenho produtivo o delineamento utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com quatro nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo e oito repetiÃÃes (ovinos). NÃo houve efeito (P>0,10) dos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo e dos ciclos de pastejo sobre a relaÃÃo FÂ, com mÃdia de 0,69. Para TAlF, houve efeito quadrÃtico (P<0,10) dos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo, estimados em 5,04 e 5,70 cm/perf x dia nos nÃveis de 0 e 1,8% PV. A TAlH e a Pseud nÃo foram afetadas (P>0,10) pelos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo, com mÃdias de 0,10 cm/perf x dia e 18,31 cm, respectivamente. Quanto aos ciclos de pastejo, nÃo foram observadas diferenÃas (P>0,05) na TAlH dos pastos no ciclo 4 e no ciclo 3, porÃm a TAlH do pasto no Ãltimo ciclo foi superior (P<0,05) à dos ciclos 1 e 2. O mesmo ocorreu para a Pseud. As variÃveis TSFa, TSFp e TST nÃo foram afetadas pelos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo (P>0,10) e nem pelos ciclos de pastejos (P>0,05). NÃo houve efeito dos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo (P>0,10) e nem dos ciclos de pastejo (P>0,05) para a variÃvel FIL, ficando com mÃdia de 11,5 dias. A TCC e a TAC nÃo foram afetadas pelos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo (P>0,10) e nem pelos ciclos de pastejo (P>0,05), com mÃdias de 153,28 e 128,70 kg MS/ha x dia, respectivamente. Para os componentes da biomassa prÃ-pastejo, nÃo foram observados efeitos (P>0,10) dos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo e nem dos ciclos para as variÃveis F/P, MSFM, MSFV, MV/MM, MSLV e MSCV. Para a variÃvel ALT, observaram-se diferenÃas (P<0,05) do ciclo 4 em relaÃÃo aos demais. A MSFT foi afetada (P<0,05) pelos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo, onde o pasto com ovinos suplementados ao nÃvel de 0,6% PV foi semelhante (P>0,05) Ãquelas dos nÃveis de 0,0 e 1,8% PV, porÃm foi superior (P<0,05) ao nÃvel de 1,2% PV. NÃo houve efeito (P>0,10) dos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo e nem dos ciclos de pastejo sobre a altura residual do pasto, com mÃdia de 28,42 cm. Quanto as variÃveis MSFTres e MSFMres, nÃo se observaram efeitos dos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo (P>0,10) e nem dos ciclos de pastejo (P>0,05), ficando com mÃdias de 6121 e 2411 kg/ha, respectivamente. Quanto ao efeito dos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo sobre a MSFTres observou-se que o pasto dos ovinos suplementados com o nÃvel de 0,6% PV foi superior (P<0,05) Ãquela do nÃvel de 1,2% PV, porÃm semelhante (P>0,05) aos demais, o mesmo ocorrendo para MSFMres. Jà para MSFVres, observou-se efeito quadrÃtico dos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo, porÃm nÃo houve efeito dos ciclos. Para a relaÃÃo MV/MMres, nÃo foram observadas diferenÃas entre nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo e nem entre ciclos de pastejo. Quanto a MSLVres, estimou-se produÃÃes de 1429 e 1637 kg/ha nos nÃveis 0 e 1,8% PV. O mesmo ocorrendo para IAF residual. Quanto a MSCVres, foi observado efeito quadrÃtico sobre o nÃvel de suplementaÃÃo, com um mÃnimo estimado de 1789 kg/ha, com 1,2% de suplementaÃÃo. Houve aumento linear (P<0,10) na relaÃÃo folha/colmo com o aumento do nÃvel de suplementaÃÃo. Quanto a DPP, nÃo foi observada diferenÃa (P>0,10) entre nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo. PorÃm quanto aos ciclos, observou-se que o ciclo 4 foi superior (P<0,05) ao ciclo 2, porÃm o ciclo 4 foi semelhante (P>0,05) aos demais. O maior tempo de pastejo ocorreu no nÃvel de suplementaÃÃo de 0,0%, decrescendo progressivamente e voltando a se elevar somente no nÃvel de 1,8% PV. O tempo de ruminaÃÃo foi superior no nÃvel de suplementaÃÃo de 0,6% PV principalmente nos perÃodos com temperaturas mais amenas. O tempo de Ãcio foi superior no nÃvel de suplementaÃÃo de 1,2%, mormente apÃs a suplementaÃÃo (perÃodos de 14-20h). O nÃmero de ingestÃo sal/suplemento elevou-se com o aumento do nÃvel de suplementaÃÃo no perÃodo de 11-14h. A ingestÃo de Ãgua elevou-se com o aumento no nÃvel de suplementaÃÃo atà 1,2% PV e concentrouse no perÃodo 11-14h. A micÃÃo foi superior no nÃvel de suplementaÃÃo de 1,8% PV e no perÃodo 5-8h. A elevaÃÃo progressiva na taxa de bocados atà o nÃvel de suplementaÃÃo de 1,2% PV nos perÃodos de 11-20h, com posterior queda sugere um efeito aditivo do suplemento sobre o pasto atà tal nÃvel, para daà em diante, ocorrer um efeito substitutivo. O tempo total sob o sombrite concentrou-se nos perÃodos mais quentes do dia e reduziu-se com os nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo atà 1,2%. Observou-se efeito quadrÃtico (P<0,10) dos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo, com o GMD estimado de 65,87 e 113,15 g/dia dos animais nÃo suplementados e recebendo suplemento ao nÃvel de 1,8% PV. O mesmo comportamento ocorreu com o GPT dos animais. O D12 estimado para o nÃvel 0,0% PV foi de 204 dias, reduzindo-se para 113 dias para o nÃvel 1,8% PV. Observou-se uma TLO mÃnima estimada (P<0,10) de 63 ovinos/ha, com 0,39% de suplementaÃÃo. Jà para TLUA (UA/ha), observou-se efeito quadrÃtico (P<0,10) nos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo, com TLUA estimada em 7,67 e 8,98 UA/ha com animais nÃo suplementados e recebendo suplemento ao nÃvel de 1,8% PV, respectivamente. Para o RPV, observou-se efeito quadrÃtico (P<0,10) nos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo, com RPV estimado em 1538 e 3264 kg PV/ha x ano, com animais nÃo suplementados e recebendo suplementaÃÃo ao nÃvel de 1,8% PV, respectivamente. Observou-se reduÃÃo linear (P<0,10) na CAC com a elevaÃÃo dos nÃveis de suplementaÃÃo. ProjeÃÃes econÃmicas indicaram maior lucratividade para produÃÃo de ovinos com suplementaÃÃo concentrada ao nÃvel de 0,6% PV, com cerca elÃtrica de no mÃnimo trÃs hectares e preÃo de venda a partir de R$ 3,00/kg PV.<br>To evaluate the canopy morphophysiology and bioeconomic performance of sheep s on Tanzania pasture with four concentrate supplementation levels (0.0; 0.6; 1.2 e 1.8% of live weight), from September to December 2004, this research was undertaken. The research was conducted at the Vale of Curu Experimental Farm, belonging to the Federal University of Ceara and located at the city of Pentecoste CE. The grazing method was the intermittent stocking, adopting variable stocking rate, with three grazing periods and 21 rest periods. The residual condition adopted consisted of a height of 28.0 cm. A split plot design, with supplementation level being parcels and cycles sub-parcels, with three or four replicates (paddocks) by treatment, respectively was utilized to morphogenesis and canopy structure. To the animal behavior it was utilized a entirely randomized design in a factorial system (4 x 8) with six replicates (sheeps). To the animal performance, a completely randomized design with eigth replicates (sheeps) was used. There was no effect between supplementation levels (P>.10) and cycles (P>.05) to F1/2, averaging 0.69. There was a square effect (P<.10) of supplementation level on the TAlF, estimating 5.04 and 5.70 cm/tiller x day to the 0.0 and 1.8% LW levels. There were not effect (P>.10) supplementation levels on the TAlH and Pseud, averaging 0.10 cm/tiller x day and 18.31 cm, respectively. In relation to the cycles, it were not observed differences (P>.05) between cycles 4 and 3, however the TAlH of the last cycle was highest than the cycles 1 and 2. The same behavior ocurred with Pseud. The supplementation levels and cycles did not affect (P>.10) the TSFa, TSFp and TST. It was not observed effect of supplementation levels (P>.10) and cycles (P>.05) on the PHYL, with an average of 11.5 days. There was no effect between supplementation levels (P>.10) and cycles (P>.05) to TCC and TAC averaging 153.8 and 128.7 kg/ha, respectively. To the biomass components before grazing, it were observed effects between supplementation levels (P>.10) and cycles (P>.05) to the F/P, MSFM, MSFV, MV/MM, MSLV and MSCV. To variable ALT, it was observed difference (P<.05) between cycle 4 in relation the others. The MSFT was affected (P<.05) by supplementation levels, where the sheeps supplemented to the 0.6% LW was similar (P>.05) to the 0.0 and 1.8% LW levels, however the 0.6%LW was highest (P<.05) than 1.2%LW. It was not observed effect of supplementation levels (P>.10) and cycles (P>.05) on the residual height, with an average of 28.42 cm. There were no effects (P>.10) supplementation levels and cycles (P>.05) on the MSFTres and MSFMres, averaging 6121 and 2411 kg/ha, respectively. In relation to supplementation levels on MSFTres, it were not observed differences (P>.05) between 0.0, 0.6 and 1.8% levels, however the 0.6%LW was highest (P<.05) than 1.2%LW. The same ocurred with MSFMres. There was a square effect (P<.10) of supplementation level on the MSFVres, however there was not observed effect (P>.05) of cycles. It was not observed effect of supplementation levels (P>.10) and cycles (P>.05) on the MV/MMres relation. It was estimated MSLVres of 1429 and 1637 kg/ha to 0.0 and 1.8% LW levels. The same ocurred to the residual LAI. There was a square effect (P<.10) of supplementation level on the MSCVres, with a minimum estimated of 1789 kg/ha, with 1.2% LW level. The addition of supplementation level caused increase (P<.10) in F/Cres. It was not observed effects between supplementation levels (P>.10) about DPP. In relation to the cycles, the cycle 4 was biggest than cycle 2, however the cycle 4 was similar in relation the others. The biggest time grazing occurred in 0.0% supplementation level, decreasing gradually and raising back only in the 1.8% supplementation level. The time ruminating was superior in 0.6% LW supplementation level, mainly in pleasant temperature. The idleness time was superior in 1.2% supplementation level, mainly after the supplementation (periods of 14-20h). The number of supplement/salt ingestions was raised with the increase in the supplementation level from 11 to 14h periods. In it was raised with the increase in the supplementation level up to 1.2% PV and was concentrated from 11 to 14h periods. The water ingestion raised with the increase in the supplementation level up to 1.2% LW and it was concentrated from 11 to 14h. The urination was superior in 1.8% LW supplementation level from 5 to 8h. The gradual rise in the bite rate until 1.2% LW from 8 to 20h periods, with posterior fall suggests an additive effect of the supplement on the grass until such level, and a substitutive effect beyond this level. The total time under shade was concentrated in the hottest periods of day and was reduced with the supplementation level up to 1,2%. It was observed square effects of supplementation levels about GMD, estimated in 65.87 e 113.15 g/day from male sheep s not supplemented and receiving 1.8% LW supplement. The same occurred with GPT. The D12 to 0.0% LW level was estimated in 204 days, decreasing to 113 days when the sheep s received 1.8% LW supplement. It was observed square effects of supplementation levels about TLUA, with a minimum estimated in 63 sheep s/ha, with 0.39% LW of supplement. It was observed square effects of supplementation levels about TLUA, estimated in 7.67 and 8.98 AU/ha from male sheep s not supplemented and receiving 1.8% LW supplement, respectively. It was observed square effects of supplementation levels about RPV, estimated in 1538 e 3264 kg LW/ha x year from sheep s not supplemented and receiving 1.8% LW supplement, respectively. It was observed linear reduction (P<.10) on CAC when increased the supplementation levels. The economic analysis showed the highest profitable to the 0.6% LW supplementation level, with electrical fence, three hectares (minimum) and sale price above of R$ 3,00/kg LW.

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeiÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior<br>O experimento foi conduzido no campo avanÃado do NÃcleo de Pesquisa em Forragicultura - NPF (www.npf.ufc.br) localizado na Fazenda Experimental do Vale do Curu â FEVC, pertencente à Universidade Federal do Cearà â UFC. Objetivou-se avaliar a composiÃÃo quÃmica e o fracionamento dos carboidratos da biomassa de Panicum maximum cv. TanzÃnia sob trÃs perÃodos de descanso (PDs) baseados no nÃmero de novas folhas expandidas por perfilho (1,5; 2,5 e 3,5F). Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado em arranjo fatorial 3x3 (3 fraÃÃes e 3 PDs). A colheita das amostras foi feita antes da entrada e apÃs a saÃda dos animais dos piquetes. Posteriormente, as amostras foram separadas nas fraÃÃes folha, colmo e material morto. No LaboratÃrio de NutriÃÃo Animal do Departamento de Zootecnia da UFC (LNA/DZ/UFC), foram determinados os teores de Fibra em Detergente Neutro (FDN), Fibra em Detergente Ãcido (FDA), Hemicelulose (HEM), Celulose (CEL), Lignina (LIG), Extrato EtÃreo (EE), ProteÃna Bruta (PB), NitrogÃnio InsolÃvel em Detergente Neutro (NIDN), NitrogÃnio InsolÃvel em Detergente Ãcido (NIDA), Carboidratos Totais (CT), Carboidratos NÃo Fibrosos (CNF), e das fraÃÃes que compÃem os CT: A+B1, B2 e C. Os teores de FDN e de FDA foram elevados (P<0,05) com o avanÃo dos PDs. A planta inteira (PI) do pasto sob maior PD (3,5F), no prÃ-pastejo, apresentou teores, respectivamente, de 74,0 e 46,3% sendo estes elevados para 77,3 e 50,9% no pÃs pastejo. Os teores de LIG da fraÃÃo folha do pasto sob PD 3,5F (4,2%) sofreram elevaÃÃes (P<0,05) no prÃ-pastejo. Os teores de LIG na PI foram superiores (P<0,05) naquelas submetidas ao PD 3,5F em comparaÃÃo Ãs PIs do PD 1,5F tanto no prÃ-pastejo (4,7 e 5,3%) quanto no pÃs-pastejo (4,7 e 5,3%). Os maiores teores de PB da fraÃÃo folha foram encontrados nos pastos sob PD 1,5F (10,9 e 8,6%), no prà e pÃs-pastejo. Os teores de PB na planta inteira variaram de 8,8 a 6,4% (P<0,05) e 6,2 e 4,4% (P<0,05) entre os PDs 1,5 e 3,5F, respectivamente no prà e pÃs-pastejo. Os teores de NIDA, tambÃm foram elevados (P<0,05) na PI do PD 3,5F (20,3 e 28,5%), respectivamente no prà e pÃs-pastejo. Os teores de CT da fraÃÃo folha e da PI apresentaram teores mÃdios (P>0,05) de 75,4 e 77,4% no prÃ-pastejo e 79,2 e 89,2% no pÃs pastejo. A fraÃÃo C dos carboidratos apresentou variaÃÃo mÃdia de 11,4 a 11,9%, na fraÃÃo folha, enquanto que na PI do pasto sob PD 3,5 F, foram observados os maiores teores (P<0,05) desta fraÃÃo (14,4 e 15,7%), em ambos os casos quando observados no prà e pÃs-pastejo. O pasto de capim TanzÃnia manejado sob PD 1,5F apresentou a melhor composiÃÃo quÃmica dos que foram avaliados. Contudo à necessÃrio que informaÃÃes sobre a composiÃÃo quÃmica dos pastos sejam levadas em consideraÃÃo em conjunto com as mudanÃas ocorridas na estrutura do pasto para que se possa ter uma maior exatidÃo na avaliaÃÃo da qualidade dos pastos.<br>The experiment was carried out in the advanced field of the Forage Research Sector - NPF (www.npf.ufc.br) located in the Experimental Farm of the Vale do Curu - FEVC, belonging to Federal University of Cearà - UFC. The objective was evaluate the chemical composition and the carbohydrate fractionation of Panicum maximum cv. TanzÃnia biomass under three rest periods (RPs) based in the new leaf (L) number expanded for tiller (1.5; 2.5 and 3.5L). Was used the completely randomized design in a factorial arrangement 3x3 (3 fractions and 3 RPs). The harvest of the samples was made before the entrance and after the exit the animals the poles. Later, the samples had been separate in the fractions leaf, culm and death material, being droughts in greenhouse of forced ventilation 65 C for 72 hours, and processed. In the Laboratory of Animal Nutrition of the Animal Science Department of UFC (LNA/DZ/UFC), were determined the levels of Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF), Hemi-cellulose (HC), Cellulose (CEL), Lignin (LIG), Etereal Extract (EE), Crude Protein (PB), Insoluble Nitrogen in Neutral Detergent (INND), Insoluble Nitrogen in Acid Detergent (INAD), Total Total Carbohydrates (TC), Non Fiber Carbohydrates (NFC), and of the fractions that compose the TC: A+B1, B2 and C. The levels of NDF and ADF had been raised (P<0.05) with the advance of the RPs. The entire plant (EP) of the grass under bigger RP (3.5L), in the before grazing, presented levels, respectively, of 74.0 and 46.3% being these raising for 77,3 and 50,9% after grazing. The levels of LIG of leaf fraction of the grass under RP 3.5L (4.2%) had suffered rises (P<0.05) after grazing. The LIG levels in the RP were higher (P<0.05) in those submitted to 3.5L RP in comparison to the EPs of the 1.5L RP in such a way in before grazing (4.7 and 5.3%) how much after grazing (4.7 and 5.3%). The biggest levels of PB of the leaf fraction had been found in the grass under 1.5L RP (10,86 and 8.59%), before grazing and after grazing. The levels of CP in the entire plant had varied of 8.8 6.4% (P<0.05) and 6.16 and 4.4% (P<0.05) between 3.5 and 1.5L RPs, respectively before and after grazing. The INAD levels, had been also raised (P<0.05) in the EP of 3.5L RP (20.3 and 28.5%), respectively before and after grazing. The levels of TC of the leaf fraction and the EP had presented average levels (P>0.05) of 75.4 and 77.4% before grazing and 79.2 and 89.2% after grazing. The C carbohydrates fraction presented average between 11.4 11.9%, in the leaf fraction, whereas in the EP of the grass under 3.5L RP, had been observed biggest levels (P<0.05) of this fraction (14.3 and 15.7), in both cases when observed before grazing and pos-grazing. The TanzÃnia grass under 1.5L RP presented the best chemical composition of that they had been evaluated. However, it is necessary that information on the chemical composition of the grass are taken in consideration in set with the occured changes in the structure of the grass so that if can have a bigger exactness in the evaluation of the quality of the grass.
