Der volle Inhalt der QuelleSpecies currently face unprecedented changes in their environment, mainly as an effect of anthropogenic activities. Dispersal is a way to track suitable conditions and thus for organisms to cope with environmental change. Studying the evolution of dispersal is thus a major challenge for biologists. Numerous studies revealed that dispersal is condition-dependent, e. G. That organisms decide to disperse according to the external conditions (habitat quality, intra- and inter-specific competition…). Phenotype-dependent dispersal describes the fact that dispersers and residents are phenotypically differentiated, but the importance of such variations on the evolution of dispersal and population dynamics remains poorly known. Using different species of Lepidoptera as model species, we characterized inter-individual variations in mobility-related traits in the laboratory to assess the role of environmental factors, parental effects, and inherited genetic factors in such phenotypic variation. We used different measures of mobility as potential proxys of dispersal capacity. We first found that mobility indeed varied among individuals in the large white butterfly Pieris brassicae. Moreover, mobility increased with latitude, whereas habitat connectivity had a sex-dependent effect: mobility in males decreased with increasing habitat connectivity, while the opposite was found in females. We then showed that mobility involved a syndrome associating behavioral, physiological and morphological traits, and that such a syndrome was similar in five butterfly species (note however that some correlations between traits differ in the large white butterfly). We also found that larval mobility and adult mobility were negatively correlated in Pieris brassicae, and that variations in behavioral flexibility were part of the mobility syndrome. Finally, using an experiment of artificial selection on individual mobility, we showed that additive transgenerational effects might strongly affect the evolution of dispersal, and that our measure of mobility was heritable (h² = 0. 37). Overall, this work has highlighted how traits’ inter-dependency, behavioral flexibility or parental effects, which were largely ignored in the modern evolutionary synthesis, might affect the evolution of dispersal in a changing world

This dissertation presents a musical analysis and discusses some interpretative aspects of the piece Sept Papillons (2000) for solo cello, by the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho (1952). A broad contextualization is presented in which we approached the composer s history, its main compositional characteristics, its aesthetic influences, the inter-relations between subjectivity and music making in her work, her gendered position in music and the importance of personal collaborations on the developing of her cello work. Musical analysis is preceded by the context of the piece, its situation on the cello repertoire, its influences and main characteristics. Due to the predominant use of natural harmonics a transcription of the original score is displayed. Musical analysis is then presented through the approach of formal and structural aspects. Research on the pitch, rhythmic, texture, timbral, gestures, instrumental and visual (metaphorical) dimensions of the piece is presented. Relations are established between the Sept Papillons building and Saariaho´s compositional processes. Technical and interpretative aspects of Sept Papillons performance and practice are addressed in dialogue with texts by performers and musicologists that work with her works and also through five interviews with cellists who have been played Sept Papillons in high level performances and recordings. It is observed the place of the body in music performance, on the sophisticated coordination on instrumental actions necessary for the performance. It is seen that Saariaho expands both the cello technique and the cello writing. Our work is justified by the contributions made to the field of knowledge on Kaija Saariaho, on analysis and performance of the contemporary repertoire, and on cello technique and cello music.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleInsects are still poorly considered in biodiversity conservation programs, despite their major role in the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Because of their great diversity, and a great lack of knowledge of community structuring patterns, the conservation of these organisms faces major challenges related to the evaluation and prioritization of issues as well as the estimation of the species richness of communities. Because they constitute two groups of insects particularly impacted by environmental changes, butterflies and dragonflies are an important part of protected insects in Europe. In this context of low consideration of entomological diversity in conservation biology, this thesis aims to (1) measure the recent dynamics (decline, stability or expansion) of these two taxa in France, and to identify the climatic and ecological factors likely to condition them, (2) for butterflies, to use a fine description of the interactions network between the larvae and their hostplants to question the conservation status according to a systemic approach (3) and finally, with a clearly operational objective, to evaluate the links between the information gains and the efforts / sampling costs mobilized during environmental impact assessments. The comparative study of the temporal dynamics of the populations of these two taxa was carried out at the scale of three countries of Western Europe through a diachronic analysis of the species distribution patterns on a time step of 35 years. This work has highlighted a strong correlation between the artificialisation of landscapes (urbanization, agricultural intensification, regression of wetlands) and the decline of many species, mainly characterized by strict ecological requirements and currently unprotected. On this same scale, the analysis of the architecture of the interactions network between butterfly larvae and their food plants revealed a modular structure in relation to the taxonomy of the partners, as well as a link between the degree specialization and species vulnerability (although the similarity of the species' diet did not seem to condition their conservation status). A final part was focused on the evaluation of the completeness of entomological surveys carried out during environmental impact assessments. A systematic and calibrated return procedure, on sites sampled in Mediterranean scrublands, allowed highlighting the limits of the current protocols in the estimation of species richness and the detection of protected or vulnerable species. This thesis contributes to the articulation between fundamental issues and operational needs, by allowing both a better understanding of the structuring mechanisms of insect communities and the formulation of recommendations for a better local application of conservation policies

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleDiversity of species, morphologies and ecological functions are heterogeneously distributed in space and vary through time. Studying the ecological factors and evolutionary processes underlying such variations are essential to understand the origin and dynamics of biodiversity. The Neotropical region is the richest biome on Earth. This thesis aims at understanding the processes underlying Neotropical diversity, using two butterfly groups. Ithomiini butterflies constitute a tribe of ca. 380 Neotropical species, all involved in Müllerian mimicry (a mutualistic interaction in which coexisting unpalatable species converge to identical warning wing color pattern as a result of benefits in shared predators education). Morpho butterflies are 30 Neotropical species from a unique genus, well known for their blue iridescent color, and recognized to have diversified within different microhabitats. In this thesis I investigated (1) the distribution of species, phylogenetic and mimicry diversity at different spatial scales (2) the temporal patterns of speciation, extinction and colonization and (3) the morphological variation in wing colors, shapes and sizes. First, I showed that the Andes exhibit high species richness among several Ithomiini genera, highlighting the role of adaptation to the altitude in structuring regional species assemblages but also as a sink for multiple independent colonization events at a biogeographic scale. Second, I found a shift in both speciation and extinction rates in the Ithomiini phylogeny, which explained the large species richness variations among subclades of Ithomiini. Third, I demonstrated that Müllerian mimetic interactions are involved in determining local species community structure. At the macroevolutionary scale, rates of convergence in mimicry patterns among species strongly vary among patterns considered. Fourth, I showed that selection on flight behaviors associated with microhabitat use is involved in wing shape and size evolution of Morpho butterflies, and covariation analyses support a functional and/or developmental integration of fore- and hind-wing. Finally, I jointly discuss all the different adaptive ecological processes studied throughout this thesis, such as adaptation to altitude, selection by microhabitat use on wing traits, or selection for mimicry by predation. I also propose several perspectives for future investigation

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis explores speciation and the importance, for diversification, of the balance between divergent forces and gene flow. It questions how a mutualistic relationship, such as mimicry, would affect the barriers involved in reproductive isolation. It details an uncovered case in the Heliconius clade: two co-mimetic sister species. This case is particularly interesting since it offers the possibility to go beyond the classical model of speciation involving a shift in colour pattern, usually described in Heliconius. Specifically, we explored genetic divergence, coexistence and mimetic relationship between those two species. Through behavioural experiments, we show that mate choice triggers strong pre-mating isolation. Controlled crosses questioned how hybridization affects wing phenotype. Results obtained for this comimetic pair were then integrated with data from other pairs of sister-species, which are divergent on colour pattern

The erosion of biodiversity is a major issue of the 21st century. The massive loss of species over the past decades has profoundly disrupted ecosystems and compromised the multiple services they provide to human societies. Among the main factors of this erosion are global warming and the degradation or destruction of habitats due to anthropogenic activities. This last factor contributes to increase habitat fragmentation and is deleterious to landscape connectivity. However, it is essential for maintaining species with limited dispersal capacities and/or living in metapopulations.Landscape connectivity is one of the main concerns of managers of natural environments. This is the case for four species of peta bogs butterflies from Jura (the Cranberry fritillary Boloria aquilonaris, the Large heath Coenonympha tullia, the Violet copper Lycaena helle and the Scarce heath Coenonympha hero) which, despite numerous conservation efforts and the protection of their habitat through a LIFE program, still show signs of decline and are included on the French and Franche-Comté IUCN red lists. The objectives of this thesis were (i) to study the population genetic structure and diversity of these species in the Jura massif and to highlight the elements of their post-glacial demographic history which may have contributed to this structuring, (ii) to establish a methodology to model the complex mosaic of environments that make up the landscape in which species live, and (iii) to model the landscape connectivity of species in order to guide future management measures.Genetic analysis revealed variable conservation states for the four species, showing a worrying situation for C. tullia and B. aquilonaris and rather stable for L. helle and C. hero. The demographic history is common and reveals a post-glacial recolonization of the Jura massif from the North. The comparison of genetic and landscape graphs has proven effective in parameterizing complex landscape resistance surfaces and its results have been used to model connectivity, in association with expert ecological data. An area of high conservation concern, located in the center of the massif, has been identified for L. helle, C. tullia and B. aquilonaris, as well as an apparent disconnection with the other regions of the massif, at least for the last two species. The demonstrated interest in the joint use of genetic and ecological data to analyze connectivity, resulting from close collaboration between research and the field, illustrates the complementarity of modeling and field monitoring for the conservation of biodiversity
