Abstract The relative importance, for cloud-top entrainment, of the cooling rates due to longwave radiation, evaporation, and mixing was assessed through analysis of the results produced by a Lagrangian parcel-tracking model (LPTM) incorporated into a large-eddy simulation model. The LPTM predicts each parcel’s trajectory over time, using the resolved velocity simulated by the host model. An LPTM makes it possible to identify entrained parcels; this is almost impossible to do in an observational study. A nocturnal stratocumulus cloud was simulated over 4h using a 5-m horizontal grid spacing and a 2.5-m vertical grid spacing. At the start of the last hour of the simulation, over 40 million parcels were placed near the top of the inversion layer and then tracked. Parcel histories were analyzed to identify entrained parcels. Entrainment occurs in cloud holes, which occur in dry regions of sinking air. Entrainment into the mixed layer is regulated by buoyancy, which requires parcels to be precooled in the inversion layer, prior to entrainment. A mixing fraction analysis was used to separate the cooling due to longwave radiation, evaporation, and mixing. Results show that radiative and evaporative cooling are of comparable importance, but that mixing is by far the dominant cooling mechanism. The radiative cooling rate is strongly inhomogeneous, and only weak radiative cooling is found in regions of entrainment. Therefore, the entrained parcels experience less than the horizontal-mean radiative cooling. Although radiative cooling maintains the boundary layer turbulence, its direct effect on buoyancy of entrained parcels is modest.

AbstractWe present a new method to calculate the neutral density of an arbitrary water parcel. Using this method, the value of neutral density depends only on the parcel’s salinity, temperature, latitude, and longitude and is independent of the pressure (or depth) of the parcel, and is therefore independent of heave in observations or high-resolution models. In this method we move the parcel adiabatically and isentropically like a submesoscale coherent vortex (SCV) to its level of neutral buoyancy on four nearby water columns of a climatological atlas. The parcel’s neutral density γSCV is interpolated from prelabeled neutral density values at these four reference locations in the climatological atlas. This method is similar to the neutral density variable γn of Jackett and McDougall: their discretization of the neutral relationship equated the potential density of two parcels referenced to their average pressure, whereas our discretization equates the parcels’ potential density referenced to the pressure of the climatological parcel. We calculate the numerical differences between γSCV and γn, and we find similar variations of γn and γSCV on the ω surfaces of Klocker, McDougall, and Jackett. We also find that isosurfaces of γn and γSCV deviate from the neutral tangent plane by similar amounts. We compare the material derivative of γSCV with that of γn, finding their total material derivatives are of a similar magnitude.

The introduction of high-resolution Sentinels combined with the use of high-quality digital agricultural parcel registration systems is driving the move towards at-parcel agricultural monitoring. The European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has introduced the concept of CAP monitoring to help simplify the management and control of farmers’ parcel declarations for area support measures. This study proposes a proof of concept of this monitoring approach introducing and applying the concept of ‘markers’. Using Sentinel-1- and -2-derived (S1 and S2) markers, we evaluate parcels declared as grassland in the Gelderse Vallei in the Netherlands covering more than 15,000 parcels. The satellite markers—respectively based on crop-type deep learning classification using S1 backscattering and coherence data and on detecting bare soil with S2 during the growing season—aim to identify grassland-declared parcels for which (1) the marker suggests another crop type or (2) which appear to have been ploughed during the year. Subsequently, a field-survey was carried out in October 2017 to target the parcels identified and to build a relevant ground-truth sample of the area. For the latter purpose, we used a high-definition camera mounted on the roof of a car to continuously sample geo-tagged digital imagery, as well as an app-based approach to identify the targeted fields. Depending on which satellite-based marker or combination of markers is used, the number of parcels identified ranged from 2.57% (marked by both the S1 and S2 markers) to 17.12% of the total of 11,773 parcels declared as grassland. After confirming with the ground-truth, parcels flagged by the combined S1 and S2 marker were robustly detected as non-grassland parcels (F-score = 0.9). In addition, the study demonstrated that street-level imagery collection could improve collection efficiency by a factor seven compared to field visits (1411 parcels/day vs. 217 parcels/day) while keeping an overall accuracy of about 90% compared to the ground-truth. This proposed way of collecting in situ data is suitable for the training and validating of high resolution remote sensing approaches for agricultural monitoring. Timely country-wide wall-to-wall parcel-level monitoring and targeted in-season parcel surveying will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of monitoring and implementing agricultural policies.

Forestland parcelization (i.e., a process by which large parcels of forestland ownership are divided into many small parcels) presents an increasing challenge to sustainable forest development in the United States. In Southeastern Ohio, forests also experienced intensive forestland parcelization, where the majority of forest owners own parcels smaller than 10 acres currently. To better understand the impact of forestland parcelization on forest development, this study employed multi-source remotely sensed data and land ownership data in Hocking County, Ohio to examine the relationship between forestland parcel size and forest attributes, including forest composition and structure. Our results show that private forestland parcels are generally smaller than public forestland (the average parcel sizes are 21.5 vs. 275.0 acres). Compared with private lands, public lands have higher values in all forest attributes, including forest coverage, abundance of oak-dominant stands, canopy height and aboveground biomass. A further investigation focusing on private forestland reveals that smaller parcels tend to have smaller forest coverage, less greenness, lower height and aboveground biomass, indicating that forests in smaller parcels may experience more human disturbances than larger parcels. The results also show that logarithmic models can well quantify the non-linear relationship between forest attributes and parcel size in the study area. Our study suggests that forestland parcelization indeed has negative effects on forest development, so it is very important to take appropriate measures to protect forests in small ownership parcels.

Delivering parcels to collection and delivery points (CDPs) is often seen as a better option compared with home delivery. However, if the demand is inhomogeneous, either the parcel locker utilization or the service level (i.e., the number of parcels that can be delivered) is low. Either situation would reduce the financial viability. This paper compares two options to increase the utilization, namely: (i) modular lockers (i.e., numbers of lockers adjusted periodically depending on demand) and (ii) combining parcel lockers with staffed CDPs. The latter has the advantage of a low investment cost of staffed CDPs and a low cost per parcel of parcel lockers. Secondly, the paper calculates the optimal number of lockers at a staffed CDP, assuming that all parcels are placed in the staffed CDP if the parcel locker is full. This method was applied to data collected by a parcel delivery company in London. The advantage of using real world data over one year is that it includes seasonal and daily changes in the parcel demand. The decision support method accounts for parcels not being picked up by customers on the delivery day, returned deliveries, and the net present value (NPV) of the investment. This paper shows that having enough lockers for 100% of all parcels compared with 80% doubles the number of required parcel lockers because of the inhomogeneity of the demand. In addition, combining fixed lockers with staffed CDPs offers greater financial benefits compared with modular lockers in this case study.

The grouping of parcel data based on proximity is a pre-processing step of GIS and a key link of urban structure recognition for regional function discovery and urban planning. Currently, most literature abstracts parcels into points and clusters parcels based on their attribute similarity, which produces a large number of coarse granularity functional regions or discrete distribution of parcels that is inconsistent with human cognition. In this paper, we propose a novel parcel grouping method to optimise this issue, which considers both the urban morphology and the urban functional connectivity. Infiltration behaviours of urban components provide a basis for exploring the correlation between morphology mechanism and functional connectivity of urban areas. We measured the infiltration behaviours among adjacent parcels and concluded that the occurrence of infiltration behaviours often appears in the form of groups, which indicated the practical significance of parcel grouping. Our method employed two parcel morphology indicators: the similarity of the line segments and the compactness of the distribution. The line segment similarity was used to establish the adjacent relationship among parcels and the compactness was used to optimise the grouping result in obtain a satisfactory visual expression. In our study, constrained Delaunay triangulation, Hausdorff distance, and graph theory were employed to construct the proximity, delineate the parcel adjacency matrix, and implement the grouping of parcels. We applied this method for grouping urban parcel data of Beijing and verified the rationality of grouping results based on the quantified results of infiltration behaviours. Our method proved to take a good account of infiltration behaviours and satisfied human cognition, compared with a k-means++ method. We also presented a case using Xicheng District in Beijing to demonstrate the practicability of the method. The result showed that our method obtained fine-grained groups while ensuring functional regions-integrity.

Assigning a state price to each land parcel is a frequent and yet important task in the state management of land parcels. Land price is issued for each street. For each street, land price is divided according to level of location 1, 2, 3 and 4. Parcel is assigned to which location level depending on its walking distance to nearest street, and passed minimum alley’s width, etc. The task of valuing land parcels is cumbersome because the number of land parcels to be priced is huge. To alleviate this burden for government staff, a step by step processing model is developed to automatically determine the location level of a particular parcel. Using ArcGIS Engine library and VB.NET programming language, the steps in the proposed model are built into functions in a specialized module for land valuation. Experiment in assigning location level and land prices of Tam Hiep ward, Bien Hoa city, Dong Nai province shows that 91,73% of parcels are assigned the same location level as the location on the issued land location map. The experiment demonstrates the effectiveness and correctness of the proposed model in automatically determining location levels and corresponding prices of land parcels.

Abstract Using a passive tracer, entrainment is studied in cloud-resolving simulations of deep convection in radiative–convective equilibrium. It is found that the convective flux of undiluted parcels decays with height exponentially, indicating a constant probability per vertical distance of mixing with environmental air. This probability per distance is sufficiently large that undiluted updrafts are negligible above a height of 4–5 km and virtually absent above 10 km. These results are shown to be independent of the horizontal grid size within the range of 3.2 km to 100 m. Plumes that do reach the tropopause are found to be highly diluted. An equivalent potential temperature is defined that is exactly conserved for all reversible adiabatic transformations, including those with ice. Using this conserved variable, it is shown that the latent heat of fusion (from both freezing and deposition) causes only a small increase in the level of neutral buoyancy near the tropopause. In fact, when taken to sufficiently low pressures, a parcel with an ice phase ends up colder than it would without an ice phase. Nevertheless, the contribution from fusion to a parcel’s kinetic energy is quite large. Using an ensemble of tracers, information is encoded in parcels at the cloud base and decoded where the parcel is observed in the free troposphere. Using this technique, clouds at the tropopause are diagnosed for their cloud-base temperature, specific humidity, and vertical velocity. Using these as the initial values for a Lagrangian parcel model, it is shown that fusion provides the kinetic energy required for diluted parcels to reach the tropopause.

Abstract Responses of shallow cumuli to large-scale temperature/moisture perturbations are examined through diagnostics of large-eddy simulations (LESs) of the undisturbed Barbados Oceanographic and Meteorological Experiment (BOMEX) case and a stochastic parcel model. The perturbations are added instantaneously and allowed to evolve freely afterward. The parcel model reproduces most of the changes in the LES-simulated cloudy updraft statistics in response to the perturbations. Analyses of parcel histories show that a positive temperature perturbation forms a buoyancy barrier, which preferentially eliminates parcels that start with lower equivalent potential temperature or have experienced heavy entrainment. Besides the amount of entrainment, the height at which parcels entrain is also important in determining their fate. Parcels entraining at higher altitudes are more likely to overcome the buoyancy barrier than those entraining at lower altitudes. Stochastic entrainment is key for the parcel model to reproduce the LES results. Responses to environmental moisture perturbations are quite small compared to those to temperature perturbations because changing environmental moisture is ineffective in modifying buoyancy in the BOMEX shallow cumulus case. The second part of the paper further explores the feasibility of a stochastic parcel–based cumulus parameterization. Air parcels are released from the surface layer and temperature/moisture fluxes effected by the parcels are used to calculate heating/moistening tendencies due to both cumulus convection and boundary layer turbulence. Initial results show that this conceptually simple parameterization produces realistic convective tendencies and also reproduces the LES-simulated mean and variance of cloudy updraft properties, as well as the response of convection to temperature/moisture perturbations.

The purpose of this study consists of gaining an understanding about Augmented Reality (AR) and if this technology can help land-surveyors to visualize cadastral parcels using an iOS app. In addition, the app is also used to get insights of what it takes for an AR system to replace 2D paper maps completely. In land-surveyors daily work, they usually bring annotated 2D paper maps to locate their assets when they do field work. However, the 2D paper map can be cumbersome to use because the map visualizes assets in 2D while the working environment for land-surveyors is in 3D. Therefore, this study presents an AR app that can visualize cadastral parcels in 3D in collaboration with a company called InfoTrader. This dissertation utilizes a qualitative methodology with a design and creation strategy as well as semi-structured interviews. To get feedback and evaluate the proposed app it was tested with professionals with experience in the land-surveying business. The findings from testing the app indicated that the app could be very useful in different scenarios. Nevertheless, to completely replace the 2D paper map, the AR system should integrate all the layers of information that the 2D map provides.

Increasingly, information on rural land is needed by land owners, realtors, investors, appraisers, government officials, and researchers to make effective economic and policy decisions involving land. One source of information that could meet this demand is local real property tax records. These records continuously provide parcel data relating to value, use, ownership, location, size, and taxes. These records also provide data on transfers of rural land, such as sales price, previous ownership, date of transfer, and type of transfer. Transfer data, in particular, may be useful at meeting data needs because sales prices are generated strictly from market interaction and because rural transfers represent only two to four percent of all rural parcels, thus providing a small, efficient sample to rely upon. Transfer data have often been used in land market analyses, particularly for local land markets. However, questions have arisen as to the representativeness of parcels sold of all parcels. The purpose of this study is to determine whether transfers of rural land are representative of all rural land parcels in terms of value and several value-producing characteristics. To accomplish this, an economic model is developed to explain the variations in the assessed per acre value of rural land in three Virginia counties. This model is then transformed into a statistical model that examines a data set composed of all rural land parcels and a data set composed of bona fide transfers occurring in 1983. The regression results of the two data sets are statistically compared. In addition, comparisons of the two data sets are also made on the basis of mean assessed land value per acre, per acre assessed land value distribution, and parcel size distribution. The results of these comparisons indicate that bona fide transfers of rural land are not representative of all rural parcels in terms of value and value-producing characteristics.

Most of spatial data extraction and updating procedures require digitization of geographical entities from satellite imagery. During digitization, errors are introduced by factors like instrument deficiencies or user errors. In this study positional uncertainty of geographical objects, digitized from high resolution Quickbird satellite imagery, is assessed using Data Uncertainty Engine (DUE). It is a software tool for assessing uncertainties in environmental data
and generating realisations of uncertain data for use in uncertainty propagation analyses. A case study area in Kocaeli, Turkey that mostly includes agricultural land parcels is selected in order to evaluate positional uncertainty and obtain uncertainty boundaries for manually digitized fields. Geostatistical evaluation of discrepancy between reference data and digitized polygons are undertaken to analyse auto and cross correlation structures of errors. This process is utilized in order to estimate error model parameters which are employed in defining an uncertainty model within DUE. Error model parameters obtained from training data, are used to generate simulations for test data. Realisations of data derived via Monte Carlo Simulation using DUE, are evaluated to generate uncertainty boundaries for each object guiding user for further analyses with pre-defined information related to the accuracy of spatial entities. It is also aimed to assess area uncertainties affected by the position of spatial entities. For all different correlation structures and object models, weighted average positional error for this study is between 2.66 to 2.91 meters. At the end of uncertainty analysis, deformable object model produced the smallest uncertainty bandwidth by modelling cross correlation.

ABSTRACT - The current thesis aimed to create a new instrument for measurement of human values, based on the functionalist theory of human values, for diagnosis and screening. To this end, it took out three studies. Study 1 aimed to build up a database of items that would meet an essential criterion: to represent the subfunctions recommended by the functionalist theory. Initially, this scale was comprised by 180 items, 30 items representing each of the six subfunctions proposed. The study included 10 judges, who with a minimum of 70% agreement between them, judged the relevance of 127 items, 53 items were eliminated. Study 2 aimed to build an instrument, resulting from the items in the previous study and gather evidence of its psychometric properties. Participants were 210 students with ages ranging from 14 to 28 years (m = 18.28; sd = 2.94), mostly female (61,4%). They answered the set of 127 items on a 7-point scale ranging from 1 (totally unimportant) to 7 (extremely important), and demographic questions. Initially, there was a semantic validation of the instrument with the participation of 12 students the first year of high school. Found that there were no questions, remained the proposed version. Confirmatory factor analysis were performed considering the covariance matrix and adopting the maximum likelihood estimator for the set of items in each subfunction separately. Through the factor loadings, we selected the top three items in each human value, resulting in a structure of nine items per subfunction of values. The rates of Cronbach s alpha ranged from 0.44 (maturity) to a 0.94 (religion), the homogeneity s indices ranged from 0.21 (maturity) to 0.60 (sexuality), and composite reliability was 0.61 (pleasure) to 0.92 (religiosity). These indices gather evidence of the reliability of the instrument. The average variance extracted, which was 0.46 (maturity) to 0.91 (religiosity) and comparison of the square root of the average variance extracted with the correlations among the factors, in this case the subfunctions values, demonstrating evidence of validity convergent and discriminant, respectively, of the measure. Study 3 aimed to confirm the factor structure using item parcels technique and, again, present their psychometric parameters. Participants were 231 students with ages ranging from 16 to 34 years (m = 19.98; sd = 2.77), mostly female (61.9%). They answered the set of items resulting from the second study in the same response scale as well as demographic questions. By comparing the rates of adjusting the model item parcels from the model built with the original items, was observed that the first best fits the data. The alpha values for the factor structure proposed ranged from 0.61 (normative) to 0.80 (interactive), regarding to homogeneity s index, composite reliability and average variance extracted, all the subfunctions above the recommended values presented in the literature. Finally, all subfunctions showed discriminant validity, except the relationship between existence and achievement and between existence and suprapersonal. In conclusion, trust that the goals proposed in this thesis have been achieved, this time presenting a contribution to a field of the measurement of human values.
RESUMO - A presente dissertação objetivou construir um instrumento novo para mensuração dos valores humanos, tomando como base a teoria funcionalista dos valores humanos, para fins de diagnóstico e triagem. Para tanto, levaram-se a cabo três estudos. O Estudo 1 objetivou construir um banco de itens, que atendesse a um critério essencial: representar as seis subfunções preconizadas pela teoria funcionalista. Partiu-se de um conjunto de 180 itens, 30 itens representando cada uma das seis subfunções valorativas. Participaram deste estudo 10 juízes, que com um mínimo de 70% de concordância entre eles, julgaram a pertinência de 127 itens, tendo sido eliminados 53 itens. O Estudo 2 objetivou construir um instrumento, a partir dos itens resultantes do estudo anterior, e reunir evidências de suas propriedades psicométricas. Participaram 210 estudantes com idades variando de 14 a 28 anos (m = 18,28; dp = 2,94), sendo a maioria do sexo feminino (61,4%). Estes responderam o conjunto de 127 itens em uma escala de 7 pontos que varia de 1 (Totalmente não importante) a 7 (Extremamente importante), além de perguntas de caráter demográfico. Inicialmente, realizou-se a validação semântica do instrumento com a participação de 12 estudantes do primeiro ano do ensino médio. Verificado que não ocorreram questionamentos, manteve-se a versão proposta. Foram realizadas análises fatoriais confirmatórias, considerando a matriz de covariância e adotando o estimador de máxima verossimilhança, para o conjunto de itens de cada subfunção, separadamente. Por meio das cargas fatoriais, foram selecionados os três melhores itens de cada valor humano, resultando em uma estrutura de nove itens por subfunção valorativa. Os índices de alfa de Cronbach variaram de 0,44 (maturidade) a 0,94 (religiosidade), os índices de homogeneidade variaram de 0,21 (maturidade) a 0,60 (sexualidade), e a confiabilidade composta foi de 0,61 (prazer) a 0,92 (religiosidade). Estes índices reúnem evidências de precisão do instrumento. Já a variância média extraída, que se situou de 0,46 (maturidade) a 0,91(religiosidade) e a comparação da raiz quadrada da variância média extraída com as correlações entre os fatores, no caso, as subfunções valorativas, demonstram evidências de validade convergente e discriminante, respectivamente, da medida. O Estudo 3 objetivou confirmar a estrutura fatorial por meio da técnica de parcela de itens e, novamente, apresentar seus parâmetros psicométricos. Participaram 231 estudantes com idades variando de 16 a 34 anos (m = 19,98; dp = 2,77), sendo a maioria do sexo feminino (61,9%). Estes responderam ao conjunto de itens resultante do estudo 2 na mesma escala de resposta, assim como perguntas de caráter demográfico. Ao comparar os índices de ajuste do modelo com parcela de itens em relação ao modelo construído com os itens originais, pode-se observar que o primeiro se ajustou melhor aos dados. Os valores de alfa para a estrutura fatorial proposta variaram de 0,61 (normativa) a 0,80 (interativa), quanto aos índices de homogeneidade, confiabilidade composta e variância média extraída, todas as subfunções apresentaram valores acima do recomendado pela literatura. Finalmente, todas as subfunções apresentaram validade discriminante, exceto as relações entre existência e realização e entre existência e suprapessoal. Concluindo, confia-se que os objetivos propostos nesta dissertação tenham sido alcançados, apresentando-se nesta oportunidade uma contribuição para o campo da mensuração dos valores humanos.

Aquest treball exposa els resultats de la investigació doctoral sobre el paisatge històric de la Vall d’Àger amb l’aplicació de la metodologia de l’Arqueologia del Paisatge. S'han utilitzar diferents mètodes científics per obtenir informació heteogènia: des de la teledetecció (lidar i radar), els documents escrits, la prospecció i l’excavació arqueològica, fins a la anàlisis de l’arquitectura i l’aplicació dels models de l’arqueologia predictiva (least cost path, site catchment analysis, viewshed analysis etc.). Els objectius consisteixen en la clarificació de les dinàmiques dels assentaments rurals en l'Edat Mitjana, des de el segle V fins al XIII, a través de l'anàlisi dels assentaments, de les vies de comunicació, del paisatge agrari i dels sistemes defensius i de l'estructura eclesiàstica. Aquest estudi ha demostrat que l’estructura del paisatge de la Vall d’Àger es genera amb un primer impuls entre els segles V i VII, i posteriorment experimenta un profund canvi a partir de finals del segle X.
Este trabajo trata de analizar el paisaje histórico del Valle de Àger (España) a través de múltiples fuentes, como las fuentes escritas, la teledetección, las fuentes arqueológicas, las arquitecturas históricas y los análisis del parcelario agrario, de la viabilidad y de la toponímica. El objetivo principal es el de analizar la periodización del asentamiento medieval de forma general y detallada a través del estudio del paisaje fortificado y del paisaje sagrado en una ventana cronológica que va desde el siglo 5 hasta el siglo 13. También se analizaron los elementos principales de las arquitecturas históricas disponibles mediante los métodos de la arqueología de la arquitectura. Otra aplicación metodológica fue la de la Archéogéographie Francesca a través de la cual es posible estudiar las estructuras del parcelario agrario y de la viabilidad. Todos los datos han sido sintetizados para obtener el cuadro general del asentamiento medieval en el valle.
This work deals with the analysis of the Ager Valley historic landscape through the methodologies of Landscape Archaeology. It uses several multidisciplinary sources as written documents, remote sensing images (mainly lidar and radar), parcels analysis, archaeological prospections and archaeological excavations. The main target has been obtaining the periodisation of the medieval settlement in the valley from the 5th to the 13th centuries. It analyses the structure of the agrarian parcel systems through the methodology developed in the Archaeogeographic studies and predictive archaeology (least cost path, viewshed analysis, site catchment analysis). It also uses the application of the Archaeology of Architecture in order to study the material evidences of the churches and the defensive towers of the valley. After the analysis of the different sources, it tries to develop a synthesis of the data following the chronological windows allowed by the sources. All the data have been used also to analyse the Landscape of Power and the Sacred Landscape in the valley during the Middle Ages.

Background: Since 2005 the Chronic Dispensing Unit (CDU) has been part of the Western Cape Government’s strategy to address increasing demand for chronic medication for patients with non-communicable diseases. However, some patients are unable to collect their pre-packed chronic medication parcels from health care facilities on the due date. Recent research reported that some patients utilise collectors or medicine agents to collect their prepacked chronic medication parcels. Currently little is known about this phenomenon of collectors. Aim and Objectives: This study explored the acceptability of collectors of CDU chronic medication parcels to improve access to medicines for patients with non-communicable diseases at Lotus River Community Day Centre (LRCDC). Methodology: An exploratory descriptive qualitative study using semi-structured interviews in English and Afrikaans was conducted with six purposively selected collectors, three patients who use collectors and three key informants who have intimate knowledge of the collectors and system at the health facility. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, translated into English (where applicable) and thematically coded to derive themes from the data. Ethical approval was provided by the University of the Western Cape Bio-Medical Research Ethics Committee and informed consent was obtained from all study participants. Results: Patients reported that their collectors exhibited positive characteristics such as trust, patience and reliability, as well as, a passion for helping the community and organisational skills. All patients acknowledged the benefits of utilising a collector and found them to be highly acceptable. Key informants, however, had some reservations about the characteristics of collectors and their role in medication distribution and were sceptical as to whether collectors were suitably equipped to perform this function. Patients were grateful when their collector had some knowledge about their condition and were able to converse with them regarding their medication. Key informants suggested that with sufficient training and skills development, collectors could potentially improve access to chronic medication parcels and impart basic knowledge about chronic medication adherence to patients. iv Conclusion: The collector system that has emerged at LRCDC is highly acceptable to patients, but health facility staff were more measured in their assessments. Health facility staff, however, acknowledged the potential of collectors to improve access to chronic medication parcels for patients with chronic conditions and the benefit of upskilling collectors to perform this function. Recommendations: As a short-term measure, collectors should be formally accepted at facilities as medicine agents. They should receive basic education about safe medication distribution practices. Patients should screen collectors to ensure that they have the desired positive attributes. Furthermore, future research is necessary to comprehensively understand the current scope of practice of collectors within communities

L’environnement logistique s’appuie sur des systèmes de pilotage centralisés qui atteignent aujourd’hui leurs limites face à un réseau logistique et des envois de plus en plus complexes et fragmentés. Des initiatives de rupture comme l’Internet Physique orientent les développements futurs vers un pilotage décentralisé, ouvert et collaboratif. Nous inscrivant pleinement dans cette dynamique, le travail de recherche présenté dans ce manuscrit a pour but de questionner la pertinence d’un pilotage décentralisé de colis intelligents et opportunistes. Nous définissons un ensemble d’indicateurs de pilotage permettant à chaque colis de prendre ses propres décisions pour se router sur le réseau logistique. Ils peuvent alors évaluer la performance d’opportunités de transport qui se présentent. Puis, nous confrontons cette approche avec différents types de transport afin d’évaluer sa pertinence. Un plan d’expériences, déployé sur un moteur de simulation à événements discrets, nous permet alors de tester plusieurs scénarios. Enfin, dans une quatrième partie, nous étendons notre étude sur une proportion du réseau logistique de l’Établissement Français du Sang pour comparer une organisation actuelle avec une organisation cible et conclure sur la pertinence de notre modèle
Centralised transport logistics systems reach their limits, facing with fragmented shipments and complex logistics networks. Breakthrough innovations, as the Physical Internet initiative, steer research works to decentralised, open and collaborative monitoring approaches. The research work in this thesis aims to query the relevance of decentralised monitoring applied on intelligent and opportunistic parcels. Thus, we define key performance indicators allowing each parcel to make its own decisions and direct itself on the logistics network. These indicators allow parcels to evaluate each transportation opportunity. In the third part, we evaluate the relevance of our model, testing these indicators with different transportation types. We use a design of experiments with Discrete-Event Simulation models to test several transportation scenarios. Finally, in the fourth part, we applied our experiments on a French Blood Establishment Supply Chain part. It aims to compare the current organisation with the expected one and conclude on the relevance of our proposition

Abstract An understanding of fuel-air mixing, along with the link between turbulent fluid flows and soot production is vital for the design of an efficient, low emissions gas turbine combustor. This paper uses a Lagrangian statistical method to investigate the time histories of mixing hence and soot development for massless parcels tracked within an LES calculation. This provides the advantage of investigating soot development using an inexpensive post-processing technique. The method comprises tracking massless parcels through the flow and recording the local temperature and composition at the parcel location, as well as the age of the parcel. This can be used to give statistical information about various aspects of mixing and soot production, such as distributions of mixture fraction or residence times. The history for each parcel can then be used in a postprocessing step to predict the soot development in time for that parcel path. This has been used to compare Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of reacting flows in both a laboratory aero-engine model combustor and a geometry representative of an annular sector from an aircraft engine combustor. It was found, that when normalized by a reference time scale based on combustor length and bulk velocity, the residence times for the annular sector were considerably shorter and mixture fraction distributions wider. This was due to a much higher chance of parcels being recirculated within the primary zone of the laboratory combustor. Further analysis of the annular combustor sector showed that very different mixing is found between the oxidation ports on the centre of the sector compared to those at the edge. The instantaneous mixing is seen to be less effective for those ports at the edge of the sector and this leads to higher soot levels in these regions.

This study employs data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach to evaluate the performance of agricultural aircraft routes. In the context of agricultural aircraft usage, not enough attention has been paid to the efficiency study of the routes in agricultural operations. Aircraft are used in agriculture to perform various treatments on agricultural land. Presumptions in this study are that a land is divided into parcels and one type of treatment must be performed on these parcels. Also, the considered operation is performed by the agricultural aircraft and the size of the analyzed land implies that all parcels cannot be treated in one route, so there are multiple routes which have to be completed. Here, we propose application of output oriented CCR DEA model on one set of routes in order to determine relatively efficient routes. Proposed inputs for the application of the DEA method are: tank capacity of an aircraft and total cost of parcel treatment in one route. Proposed outputs are: total treated land area (total area of all parcels in route) in one route and percentage share of effective flight in the total distance traveled in one route. In this way relatively efficient routes can be selected, and some further analysis of relatively inefficient routes can be made in order to see what changes can be done in inputs and / or outputs of these inefficient routes to improve their performance.

The importance of the parcel (also referred to as ‘plot’ or ‘lot’) as one of the fundamental elements of urban form is well recognized within the field of urban morphology. It has been described as a basic element in the pattern of land divisions that works as an organizational grid for urban form. One of the distinctive features of the parcel is its dual character: it means both a legal unit defining property rights and a physical entity. In urban fabrics, these dimensions act together to drive the evolution of built space. In this paper, we will investigate the entanglements of the morphological and the legislative definitions of the term, with the aim to resolve these, we better can address and compare the vital layer of parcels in different urban contexts, by both identifying common properties of the notion parcels, and dealing with variations in its legal framework in different countries. What we aim to capture with such a comprehensive definition is the relation between urban form and generic functions, which mainly concerns the functions of occupation and movement, where the system of parcels can be identified as spaces that embed an affordance for occupancy in cities of most kinds. The intended outcome of the paper is to unveil the power of the dual nature of the parcel, bridging between spatial and non-spatial dimensions of cities, that is, more precisely, a potential to establish a stronger interface between urban design and planning practice. Annotation:

Volume of Fluid (VOF) and Eulerian-Lagrangian (EL)/Discrete Droplet Methods (DDM) are two of the most widely used methods in spray simulations. It is well known that these two methods have their pros and cons. VOF is good at capturing the transient detailed flow physics, while it is usually very expensive. EL is very efficient; however, to inject spray parcels, some experimental/pre-computed information is needed, such as rate of injection, and/or the parcel radius distributions, etc. It is often the case, the detailed fluid flow information at the nozzle exit, which is essential for downstream droplet breakup and coalescence, cannot be accounted in the EL method. In this paper, we developed a one-way coupled approach, in which VOF is employed to compute the detailed fluid field in the injector and this fluid information is then utilized by EL for the injection of parcels at the nozzle exit. The one-way coupled approach is used to calculate some ECN (Engine Combustion Network) spray cases, such as Spray A and Spray H. The simulated results are compared to the experimental data, and satisfactory agreement is obtained.
