Abstract By the autumn of 1847 it was clear that John Franklin and his crew were lost in the Arctic. The explorer John Rae famously reported that Franklin’s men had died, and that the last survivors had resorted to cannibalism. This was not the news Franklin’s widow Lady Jane Franklin wanted to hear, and Rae was subsequently condemned by many prominent British figures including Charles Dickens. Not accepting Rae’s testimony, Lady Franklin organized an expedition led by Captain Francis Leopold McClintock using the steam yacht Fox. One of the crewmembers on board the Fox was the Danish Arctic explorer Carl Petersen. Using both Petersen’s narrative Den Sidste Franklin Expedition med Fox (1860), and McClintock’s narrative from the same expedition, The Voyage of the ‘Fox’ in the Arctic Seas (1859), as its starting point, this article examines key differences in the perceptions of the controversy surrounding Rae’s report to the Admiralty, and how Arctic explorers were represented in the Danish and British contexts. While the idea that Franklin’s men had resorted to cannibalism in a final attempt to sustain themselves before they passed away was a significant affront to the British notion of the heroic Arctic explorer, this was not the case in the Danish context. The lost Franklin expedition generated international interest, international collaboration, and financial assistance for search missions, and therefore affords us an opportunity to explore national differences in the construction of the Arctic and the Arctic explorer.

Abstract In this article I discuss the relationship between analytical psychology and theories of human social evolution. More specifically I look at debates in evolutionary studies and anthropology regarding the priority of matrilineal social structure in the emergence of Homo sapiens. These debates were occurring in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and they provide the context for many of the assumptions of psychoanalysis and analytical psychology. In this essay I will explore these issues in relation to analytical psychology. I will also discuss the work of anthropologist John Layard who proposed matriliny was humanity’s original form of social organisation. Interestingly, Layard’s field work had significant impact on Jung. I will also compare the work of Layard, and other theorists who adopt matrilineal theories of human social evolution, with the theories of Jordan Peterson. Peterson has developed an idiosyncratic evolutionary conception of analytical psychology, one in which he explicitly rejects the notion of matrilineal priority in human evolution. He also adopts certain assumptions about the evolutionary origins of contemporary socio-political hierarchy, assumptions I argue are not supported by data from numerous fields of scientific enquiry.

AbstractThere is a growing literature on the theological roots of Schmitt's theory, however, such interpretations depart from the same position as Schmitt: from the political into the theological. In this quarrel between politics and theology, there is a less known contender, the theologian Erik Peterson, who developed a theological critique of Schmitt and shows the impossibility of a Christian political theology. InPolitical Theology II(1970), Schmitt criticizes the apolitical nature of Peterson's theology, but he ignores Peterson's theology of martyrdom. This paper recovers the centrality of martyrdom in Peterson's theology and argues that the martyr represents a counter model to Schmitt's sovereign. For Peterson, martyrdom is not apolitical act, but a public claim in which the martyrs testify in the public sphere that the highest human good is not political but eschatological. By recovering this eschatological dimension, Peterson shows the limits of Schmitt's interpretation of the political.

Abstract In the current dispute over the crisis of democracy arises, among others, the question about a theological concept of the Political. The article traces this problem back to the debate between Erik Peterson and Carl Schmitt after 1933. While Schmitt, apologizing Nazi dictatorship, emphatically proclaimed the Political as the »total«, Peterson responded that the Political in the very moment of its totalization ceases to be political but receives instead a cultlike quality. Opposing this scenario, Peterson developed a concept of the Political which finds its central image in the figure of the martyr whose body is broken by imperial violence. The Political is not conceived out of the political agency, but out of the »passio«, at the place where the new aeon of the crucified and risen Christ and the old aeon of the agonistic political are colliding. The sacramental practice of the church, then, is the place where the presence of the new order of the Political is instituted and anticipated in an eschatological and provisional way.

The classical controversy between Carl Schmitt and Eric Peterson goes directly to the heart of the matter: What is ‘political theology’ about? Is it a descriptive or normative endeavour, oriented towards history or political influence on contemporary issues? This article explores these questions with reference to Protestant theology, in particular the writings of Martin Luther. Protestant theology has often emphasised the basic difference between the spiritual and political spheres, but I question the validity of this distinction with respect to Luther’s theology. When Luther enters the political scene, an apocalyptic understanding of friend and enemy tends to dominate his thinking. Furthermore, I discuss whether this is compatible with his metaphysical understanding of the ‘hidden God’ in his majesty, and hence, whether a metaphysical violence is deeply embedded in Luther’s theology, possibly even his understanding of ‘justification by faith’. Finally, I suggest a reconsideration of Luther’s political theology based on the questions raised by Schmitt and Peterson.

Severely impaired memory deprives amnesics of a sense of personal continuity in their daily lives, yet there are no tests that accurately measure this impairment (see Lezak, 1995). Several neuropsychological tasks have been developed to document the severity of memory loss in terms of memory span, such as the Brown–Peterson Technique (Peterson & Peterson, 1959), but the ecological validity of such tasks as measures of personal or temporal continuity is not obvious (see Heinrichs, 1990). Instead they measure memory in terms of how much information could be held in working or short-term memory, not memory span in the sense of continuity. To develop a new measure of amnesia with greater relation to everyday function, we had to examine the integrity of memory function in terms of temporal continuity in a way that would engage the patient in everyday behavior, such as informal conversation, and still allow memory function to be quantifiable. Thus, we set out to create a bedside task that could measure the span in which the patient with amnesia experiences temporal continuity. We call this measure the “span of temporal continuity,” or “personal and present span of existence.”

US citizen scientist, researcher, and anti-geoengineering activist Rosalind Peterson of Mendocino, California, proved both pioneer and prophet. She helped catalyze a global grassroots anti-geoengineering movement through her decades-long work crusading for clearer skies, cleaner water, healthier trees and plants, and a more resilient planet free of geoengineering fallout. Peterson combined scientific data collection and research, publishing, public speaking, and political advocacy to educate the world about the many negative environmental consequences of clandestine geoengineering. In 2002 Peterson founded California Skywatch (CSW), and in 2006 the Agricultural Defense Coalition (ADC). The two organizations merged in January 2011 and remain vital online public repositories of scientific data, legislative documents, and visual evidence of covert geoengineering programs. Peterson’s indefatigable efforts over three decades to call global public attention to the environmental consequences of geoengineering exemplify the potential power of the citizen scientist to shape scientific and political processes and outcomes. Peterson’s decades-long effort to uncover the myriad toxic environmental impacts of clandestine geoengineering also provides a compelling, scientifically researched alternative to the widely accepted theory advanced by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that global warming is primarily caused by anthropogenically released carbon dioxide.

In this article, Ann-Christine Petersson Hjelm argues that the elderly care system in Sweden rests on what is described as a trust and dependence concept. In particular, it is discussed whether and in what way the interplay between trust and dependence is expressed in government committees and official documents. Interplay implies a correlation between social services personnel (trust) and the elderly (dependence). It is further stressed that the concept is a necessity, and that the impact of power – in terms of an instrument for management control – is a precondition for the elderly care system to work. It is argued that in the absence of indicative regulations, a built-in power strategy to create trust becomes necessary for the personnel. Petersson Hjelm also discuss power in terms of the elderly becoming empowered in relation to the exercise of public authority, activities or functions in elderly care by the personnel.

One hundred and eight university students were administered a battery of eight neuropsychological tests including, the Austin Maze, the Tower of London, the Wisconsin Card Sort Test, Block Design, the Visual Spatial Learning Test, Digit Span Backwards, the Brown-Peterson Task and the Wide Range Achievement Test of Reading. Results indicated that visuospatial ability and memory both significantly contributed to performance on the Austin Maze, but differed in the degree to which they explained the performance depending on which measure of maze performance was employed. It appears that visuospatial ability is measured in early trials of the Austin Maze when individuals are orienting themselves to the path. In later trials individuals must call upon visuospatial memory to consolidate the details of the path. Executive function and working memory were not found to be significantly implicated in performance on the Austin Maze. (JINS, 1999, 5, 1–9.)

A qualitative perceptual assessment by a speech-language pathologist is considered the most important step of the evaluation for children with resonance disorders (Peterson-Falzone, Hardin-Jones, & Karnell, 2010). Direct and indirect instrumental analyses should be used to confirm or validate the perceptual evaluation of an experienced speech-language pathologist (Paal, Reulbach, Strobel-Schwarthoff, Nkenke, & Schuster, 2005). Abstract:In this paper I consider the implications of work in evolutionary psychology for institutional analysis. I respond to Pascal Boyer and Michael Bang Petersen (‘The Naturalness of (Many) Social Institutions: Evolved Cognition as their Foundation’; 2012), who put forward a programmatic statement in this connection. I argue that their discussion overstates the explanatory power of evolutionary psychology and does not take sufficient account of what we already know about institutions. At the same time, I suggest that they, and the empirical work upon which they draw, make an important contribution by helping us to establish more clearly the boundary conditions of institutional analysis. I call for ongoing cooperation and for the establishment of a unified research tradition that brings together both evolutionary psychology and institutionalism.

ABSTRACTIn this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between the rates of resistance ofPseudomonas aeruginosato carbapenems and the levels and diversity of antibiotic consumption. Data were retrospectively collected from 20 acute care hospitals across 3 regions of Switzerland between 2006 and 2010. The main outcome of the present study was the rate of resistance to carbapenems amongP. aeruginosa. Putative predictors included the total antibiotic consumption and carbapenem consumption in defined daily doses per 100 bed days, the proportion of very broad-spectrum antibiotics used, and the Peterson index. The present study confirmed a correlation between carbapenem use and carbapenem resistance rates at the hospital and regional levels. The impact of diversifying the range of antibiotics used againstP. aeruginosaresistance was suggested by (i) a positive correlation in multivariate analysis between the above-mentioned resistance and the proportion of consumed antibiotics having a very broad spectrum of activity (coefficient = 1.77; 95% confidence interval, 0.58 to 2.96;P< 0.01) and (ii) a negative correlation between the resistance and diversity of antibiotic use as measured by the Peterson homogeneity index (coefficient = −0.52;P< 0.05). We conclude that promoting heterogeneity plus parsimony in the use of antibiotics appears to be a valuable strategy for minimizing the spread of carbapenem resistance inP. aeruginosain hospitals.

AbstractThe views of categorisation presented in this paper along with my own are for the purpose of providing background for current taxonomic projects related to electroacoustic music (e.g. EARS: ElectroAcoustic Resource Site). The views might be summarised as top-down (ontology) as described in Peterson, bottom-up (folksonomy) as described in Shirkey and Weinberger, and a view from the middle ground (TagOntology) as described in Gruber. Semantic Wikipedia enters this discourse in relation to what one might call folk-ontology. It is crucial to conduct experimentation with minimal specifications and practical methodologies in order to facilitate the interoperability of dynamic, emergent knowledge bases within the Semantic Web context.

While this ‘extraordinary’ book appears as an intermezzo within the Homo Sacer series (Negri, 2008), it supports two fundamental theses with its own philological, epigraphic, liturgical and religious-historical research, and a close reading of figures such as Ernst Kantorowicz and Marcel Mauss. These theses concern political power first as an articulation of sovereign reign and economic government and, secondly, as constituted by acclamations and glorification. These can be approached theoretically through its author’s engagement with Michel Foucault’s genealogy of governmentality and with the Erik Peterson/Carl Schmitt debate on the closure of political theology. Agamben’s reformulation of power and his derivation of liberal governmentality from the theological oikonomia prove convincing. A renewed analytics of power and politics of resistance should be possible, however, without recourse to a project seeking to deactivate all profane powers including those of public bureaucracies.

SummaryPatient-generated health data are coming into broader use across the health care spectrum and hold great promise as a means to improve care and health outcomes. At the same time, rapid evolution in the social media and mobile health (mHealth) market has promoted an environment in which creation and transmission of personal health information is easy, quick, and appealing to patients. However, adoption of social media and mHealth by providers is hampered by legal and regulatory concerns with regard to data ownership and data use. This article defines common forms of patient-generated health data (PGHD) and describes how PGHD is used in clinical settings. It explores issues related to protection of personal health information, including that of children and adolescents, data security, and other potential barriers such as physician licensure. It also discusses regulatory and legal considerations providers and patients should consider before using social media and mobile health apps.Citation: Petersen C, DeMuro P. Abstract A wicked problem, by definition, has innumerable causes, is tough to describe, and doesn’t necessarily have a right answer. This describes today’s health care for older adults across the long-term care continuum. Our interdisciplinary group has almost as many years (n=70) of experience as GSA conducting research in community-based groups across the continuum of care from skilled nursing facilities, assisted living communities, adult day care, to independent living. In this symposium we will discuss lessons learned in recruitment, intervention delivery, and unexpected outcomes. Peterson will discuss lessons learned in using large data sets to derive actionable information on staff license mix and SNF complaints. Dobbs will discuss the utility of using hospice nurses to train ALC nurses in delivering palliative care. Lee will discuss lessons in engaging direct care workers in their need for sleep. Meng will discuss learning to embrace an unexpected finding that friendships developed in a dementia family caregiver music and mindfulness intervention were as meaningful as positive health outcomes. Buck will discuss lessons learned in recruiting a hidden group – informal caregivers with complicated grief. Finally, Zimmerman, as expert long-term services and support discussant, will pull the pieces together across the studies to facilitate discussion. Enrich your future research related to addressing wicked problems in health care for older adults by learning from our experiences.

ABSTRACTOver the last few decades, task-based language teaching (TBLT) has garnered increasing attention from researchers and educators alike. With a strong and growing body of research demonstrating the efficacy of tasks to support and facilitate second language development and performance (e.g., Keck, Iberri-Shea, Tracy-Ventura, & Wa-Mbaleka, 2006), TBLT has become a leading pedagogical approach. Similarly, computer-assisted language learning (CALL) has also grown as a field, with the use and integration of technology in the classroom continuing to increase (Petersen & Sachs, 2015). As these fields have matured, a reciprocal relationship has developed (Lai & Li, 2011), with the literature on tasks and technology seeking to not only examine how technology might support and facilitate language learning, but how TBLT might serve as a framework to more thoroughly investigate CALL. In light of the expanding research on tasks and technology, this review article aims not only to provide a current state of the art of how technology-mediated TBLT facilitates and supports second language development and performance, but also to describe how technology can contribute to our understanding of how features of TBLT, such as task design features and task implementation, influence the success of second language acquisition. Suggestions for possible research agendas in technology-mediated TBLT are also made.

In "Written Exposure Therapy as Step One in Reducing the Burden of PTSD: The Composite Cases of "Alex,' 'Bruno,' and 'Charles'"(Austern, 2017), I presented three composite case study examples of how veterans suffering from PTSD may benefit from written exposure to their trauma memories. For one case (Bruno), Written Exposure Therapy (WET) was the initial treatment in a stepped-care approach that culminated in Prolonged Exposure therapy. However, for the two others, WET became a standalone treatment. In two commentaries on the cases, Cigrang and Peterson (2017) and Sloan and Marx (2017) discuss the development and efficacy of WET, WET implementation strategies, and practice implications of WET (e.g., the potential to reduce clinician burnout). In my response to these commentaries, I aim to contribute to the bourgeoning discussion of how mental health providers can best incorporate this promising writing-based treatment (WET) into their existing approaches to working with veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). My response will address themes raised by my composite case studies and by the commentaries, including how stepped-care service delivery models may have the potential to make PTSD care more efficient.

Mathematics education has been heralded for its leadership role in the U.S. school reform effort (Stein, Grover,&Henningsen, 1996; Grant, Peterson, & Shojgreen- Downer, 1996). Prominent in the reform of mathematics education is the call for students not merely to memorize formulas and rules and apply procedures but rather to engage in the processes of mathematical thinking, that is, to do what mathematicians and other professional users of mathematics do. The revamped mathematics education program is based on engaging students in problem posing and problem solving rather than on expecting rote memorization and convergent thinking. These changes in mathematics education suggest that mathematics teaching must build on students' learning and on their ability to pose and solve problems previously considered too difficult for their age-grade levels (Carpenter&Fennema, 1988; Fennema, Franke, Carpenter,&Carey, 1993).

ABSTRACT Purpose The inconsistency of subspecialty emergency call services is a growing concern as declining reimbursements, increased legal risk, and challenging social and professional issues present a deterrent to call panel participation. This study assessed call availability of hand and microvascular replantation surgery at all level I and II trauma centers in the US. Materials and methods Between May and December 2010, all level I (n = 137) and level II (n = 153) trauma centers across the US were contacted by telephone. Phone contact was unannounced; responders were invited to participate in our IRBapproved anonymous survey regarding hand and microvascular replantation emergency coverage specific to their hospital. Results: Level 1 centers: 117 of 137 (85%) participated, of which 64 (54.7%) had immediate access for hand surgery and microvascular replantation services. Six hospitals provided services 15 to 31 days per month and 3 hospitals supported 1 to 15 days per month. Ten hospitals indicated an inconsistent coverage which was difficult to estimate and 34 hospitals reported no coverage. Level 2 centers 132 of 153 (86.3%) participated, of which 38 (29%) had immediate access for hand surgery and microvascular replantation services. Seven hospitals provided services 15 to 31 days per month and 3 hospitals for 1 to 15 days per month. 84 hospitals reported no specific coverage protocol. Conclusion Consistent on-call availability for emergency hand and microvascular replantation services remains a challenge across the US: • 54.7% of level I trauma centers had immediate access to emergency hand and microvascular replantation services although many hospitals had intermittent coverage; • 29% of level II trauma centers had immediate access to emergency hand and microvascular replantation services although many hospitals had intermittent coverage. Over 50% had no specific coverage protocol; • Many hospitals indicated the presence of subspecialty hand surgery coverage, however microvascular replantation resources were not available consistently; • While not confirmed, the current study findings suggest that a more clearly defined and coordinated system of hand surgery and microvascular replantation emergency call coverage will likely improve the efficiency of a limited resource and, ultimately, improve patient care. With the development of autonomous robots, one day probably capable of speaking, thinking and learning, self-reflecting, sharing emotions, in fact, with the raise of robots becoming artificial moral agents (AMAs) robot scientists like Abney, Veruggio and Petersen are already optimistic that sooner or later we need to call those robots “people” or rather “Artificial People” (AP). The paper rejects this forecast, due to its argument based on three metaphysical conflicting assumptions. Firstly, it is the idea that it is possible to precisely define persons and apply the definition to robots or use it to differentiate human beings from robots. Further, the argument of APs favors a position of non-reductive physicalism (second assumption) and materialism (third assumption), finally producing weird convictions about future robotics. Therefore, I will suggest to follow Christine Korsgaard’s defence of animals as ends in themselves with moral standing. I will show that her argument can be transmitted to robots, too, at least to robots which are capable of pursuing their own good (even if they are not rational). Korsgaard’s interpretation of Kant delivers an option that allows us to leave out complicated metaphysical notions like “person” or “subject” in the debate, without denying robots’ status as agents.

AbstractIs it possible to speak of the compulsion to create? And if so, what underlies it? In this article, I set out to offer a comprehensive explanation of what may cause the strong desire for creative activity observable in many artistically-inclined individuals. To describe this desire, I use the term compulsion to create, and drawing upon examples from both pop-culture and the lives of famous artists on the one hand, and philosophical and scholarly writings on the other, I seek its sources in the individual’s psyche. I discuss how the compulsion to create depends, among other factors, on an individual’s personality and mental state (in the sense of Sigmund Freud’s and Elaine N. Aron’s theories), transcendental circumstances (in the sense of Carl Jung’s theory) and character traits (as defined by Jordan Peterson). Then, I frame the phenomenon studied within the 4Ps Model of Creativity. I point to a significant correlation between the compulsion to create and high levels of an individual’s creativity. Additionally, I discriminate between the notions of the drive to create and the compulsion to create. The article proposes a definition of the compulsion to create which allows for a clear understanding of this notion and its popular application in the field of creatology.

Schum, Etlingera elatior (Jack) R. M. Smith, Musa coccinea H.C. Andrews, Strelitzia reginae Aiton, Zingiber spectabilis Griffith, Heliconia latispatha Benth., Heliconia rivularis L. Emygd. H. rostrata. M. coccinea, ‘Fire Bird’, E. elatior ‘Vermelha’, Z. spectabilis. E. elatior ‘Rosa’, A. purpurata ‘Vermelha’ e helicônias ‘Alan Carle’, ‘Sassy’ e ‘She’.
