The author argues that beyond religious beliefs and conservative politics, rhetorical identification played an important role in the relative calmness of the BYU campus during the turbulent Sixties. Abstract Initial publication of Philo’s writings was slow, with only partial works or minor translations appearing from the invention of the printing press to the mid-sixteenth century. But in 1552 Adrianus Turnebus (or Adrien Turnèbe), Parisian printer and professor, drew on three manuscripts from the Royal Library at Fontainebleau to publish the editio princeps of most of Philo’s writings. Philo of Alexandria (ca. 20 B.C.E. -50 C.E.), or Philo Judaeus as he is also called, was a Jewish scholar, philosopher, politician, and author who lived in Alexandria and who has had a tremendous influence through his works (mostly on the Christian exegesis and theology).
