Abstract Climatologies of sea level anomalies (>0.05 m) and daily-mean storm surges (>0.3 m) are presented for the 1960–2010 cool seasons (October–April) along the East Coast of the United States at Boston, Massachusetts; Atlantic City, New Jersey; Sewells Point (Norfolk), Virginia; and Charleston, South Carolina. The high sea level anomaly and the number of storm surges, among the highest in the last half century during the 2009/10 cool season, are comparable during strong El Niño cool seasons. Background Vitamin D supplementation leads to regression of left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy and improves LV function in animal models. However, limited data exist from prospective human studies. We examined whether vitamin D supplementation improved cardiac structure and function in midlife/older individuals in a large randomized trial. Methods and Results The VITAL (Vitamin D and OmegA‐3 Trial) was a nationwide double‐blind, placebo‐controlled randomized trial that tested the effects of vitamin D3 (2000 IU/d) and n−3 fatty acids (1 g/d) on cardiovascular and cancer risk in 25 871 individual

High fat diet induced obesity and insulin resistance have been directly implicated in the neuropathology of Alzheimer's disease. It is thought that high fat diets induce a reduction in neuronal plasticity through a reduction in the neurotrophin, brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Previous work has demonstrated that acute exercise can reverse high fat diet induced alterations in cortices from obese mice, however the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a single bout of exercise on BDNF content and signaling in the prefrontal cort

Not quite a knee-jerk, but more of an uneasy gut punch. ‘Don't you know what this movie is about?’ I wanted to ask his parents; ‘I’ve seen Jeff Bauman’s bones, and that is not something a child should see.’ I had lived through the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and subsequent manhunt, and the memories were vivid in my mind as I waited for the m

Abstract Objectives Building evidence suggests that greater adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet (MD) may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and dementia. However, our understanding of the biological mechanisms explaining these associations is limited. Altered sphingolipid metabolism (e.g., increased ceramides, glycosyl- and lactosyl-ceramides, sphingoid bases, and sphingomyelin (SM)) has been implicated in the development of chronic health conditions. We aimed to quantify the impact of MD adherence on circulating patterns of sphingolipid metabolites. Methods Cross-

In the Western tradition of storytelling, it's customary to start with the exposition, build up to major events, and end with some form of narrative closure.
