Brown, Marilyn A., und Benjamin K. Sovacool. Theorizing the Behavioral Dimension of Energy Consumption. Herausgegeben von Debra J. Davidson und Matthias Gross. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190633851.013.9.

Annotation:
This chapter focuses on the well-documented misalignment between energy-related behaviors and the personal values of consumers, which has become a major source of angst among policymakers. Despite widespread pro-environmental or green attitudes, consumers frequently purchase non-green alternatives. The chapter identifies 50 theoretical approaches that can be divided almost equally into two types: those that emphasize beliefs, attitudes, and values; and those that also consider contextual factors and social norms. Three principles of intervention are recommended: provide credible and targeted information at points of decision; identify and address the key factors inhibiting and promoting the target behaviors in particular populations; and rigorously evaluate programs to provide credible estimates of impact and opportunities for improvement. The chapter recommends that research on the value-action gap be expanded beyond the traditional focus on individuals to include decision-making units such as households, boards of directors, commercial buying units, and government procurement groups.

Annotation:
Many people care about the environment and are in favor of protecting it, but these concerns are imperfect determinants of behavior. There are good reasons for this “value-action gap”: incentives are frequently aligned against environmentally preferable action, and we each face so many daily environmentally relevant decisions that efforts to do the right thing consistently are daunting. These approaches can even backfire, as people dislike feeling judged, or may tire of constant efforts to behave and may backslide on good intentions. A more promising option for explaining or encouraging environmental behavior is invoking social norms. People modify their behavior to fit social expectations, so community decisions that work against environmental behavior can discourage beneficial behavior. Framing information in a way that demonstrates the environmentally beneficial choices of neighbors or group members increases willingness to make environmentally positive choices.

Shelley, Emer, und Margaret E. Cupples. Health promotion to improve cardiovascular health in the general population. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199656653.003.0024.

Annotation:
Prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) requires consideration of the extent to which the social, physical, and fiscal environment facilitates heart-healthy lifestyles. The high-risk strategy for prevention offers major benefits for those with diagnosed CVD and those known to be at increased risk compared with their peers. From a population health perspective strategies to reduce risk in the majority not known to be at high risk have the potential for much greater benefits. Prevention programmes to improve CVD risk in communities should tailor objectives and programme design, including evaluation, to the resources available. Baseline information is required on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours, as well as risk factors and morbidity, in order to raise awareness of needs, support programmes appropriately, and help reduce inequalities. Responsibility for changing behaviour rests with the individual, but preventive services can provide support, involving partners and family members.

Wilson, Mardi. Everyday Coercion. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2025. https://doi.org/10.5040/9781350425002.

Annotation:
Everyday Coercionexplores men's routine use of sexual coercion toward women in 'everyday' social and dating interactions, and how such sexual coercion has been normalized within a landscape of heteronormativity, rape culture, and binarized gender roles. A groundswell of activism over the past decade has directed attention to the epidemic of sexual violence around the world. Women are seeking to make sense of why they are so commonly subject to sexism, misogyny and sexual violence, and why they and their behavior are often socially interrogated, instead of those causing the harm. With unapologetic curiosity, Wilson shines a light onto this contradiction by unpacking the attitudes, beliefs and behaviours we've been encouraged to see as 'normal'. Drawing on participant insights about coercion, masculinity, sex and consent,Everyday Coercionunpacks contemporary themes like unacknowledged rape, victim blame and performative naivety. Bringing together women’s stories of sexual coercion, and men's insights around having enacted coercion, Wilson has a unique vantage point from which to expose and de-normalize sexual coercion.
