Submersible electric pump installations (ESP) are the main tool of oil production due to the high rate of the oil deposits development. Improving of the production efficiency using ESP is an urgent problem for the oil industry. Failures of installations are caused by many factors, some of them are salts. Water contained in the oil is oversaturated by sparingly soluble salts. It can precipitate in the form of scale at heating. It leads to the gradual decrease of the pump pipe diameter and consequently decreasing of production. In this case, the pump operation mode may be failed. Timely shutdown of the pump for well repair before failure can significantly reduce costs, as well as prevent critical damage of all equipment. But such type of failure as the salt deposition is difficult to perceive, and subsequent repair involve aggressive acid flushing. Reverse situation is connected with maximization of the turnaround maintenance. Therefore, for operators of production control centers it is important to have an information of the failure probability for certain parameters at a given time points. At present, datasets on the technical operating modes for equipment are saved by special software of the digital support platform. Nevertheless calculations of the probabilistic characteristics are not presented. Based on Bayesian estimates, we propose to obtain evaluation of the failure probability in order to support of the evidence monitoring of the wells operation and generate a control impact in case of the critical probability of failures.

The presence of foreign firms in a region can create spillovers to other firms, both within the intra-industries (industries itself) and inter-industries (other industries). Spillover from foreign firms can be in the form of technology transfer, efficiency improvement, managerial knowledge which ultimately is expected to increase productivity for other firms not only in large enterprises but also for micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Hence, this paper aims to identify the potential backward spillover of foreign firms to MSMEs in East Java and the individual results show that the four highest backward spillovers values of foreign industries are industry of components and spare parts of the prime mover motor, industry of agricultural and forestry machinery and services for supporting, maintenance and repair, industry of pump and compressor and industry of measurement tools, manual regulator and testing. All of them are respectively located in Surabaya City, Pasuruan District, Pasuruan District and Mojekerto District. Furthermore, the general results show that the potential backward spillover exists in rubber, rubber goods and plastic goods industries as well as chemicals and goods from chemical material industries. The foreign firms which have highest backward spillovers are located in Pasuruan District, Mojekerto District, Sidoarjo District, Surabaya City and Gresik District. Therefore, the provincial government of East Java should immediately prepare and support both technically and financially to MSMEs in providing raw materials required by foreign firms based on the industrial classification and location results of this study. In addition, the provincial government of East Java can coordinate with the district governments in the areas of those foreign firms for preparing MSMEs in supplying raw materials. The paper analyzes the main techniques and technologies of oil fluid recovery in the context of energy consumption, significantly rising over the latest decade. It is recognized that the number of publications in the area of energy efficiency is growing steadily. Currently Russian oil and gas industry are facing the task of accelerating reduction of energy consumption while preserving, or even increasing, production rates. The task is complicated by the fact that the majority of deposits in Russia either have already entered (primarily, Volga-Ural region) or are now entering (West Siberia) their last stage of exploration, whereas new deposits in East Siberia are only being brought into production. Furthermore, a lot of new deposits, which provide for high recovery rates, are profitable a priori as at the first stage of exploration they do not need any artificial lift due to their free flow production without any oil well pumps. However, there is a significant share of new deposits with low-permeability reservoirs, which require either a system of reservoir pressure maintenance or periodic hydraulic fracturing. At the same time deposits at the late stages of exploration, apart from the use of pump units, systems of reservoir pressure maintenance and hydraulic fracturing, require regular repair and restoration, measures against salt and heavy oil sediments, mechanical impurities, flooding, etc., which all has a negative effect on well profitability. In order to solve these problems, the authors review existing methods and calculate specific energy consumption using various pump systems for hypothetical wells, varying in yield. According to the research results, it has been revealed that from the point of view of energy efficiency, it is desirable to equip low- and low-yield wells with sucker rod progressive cavity pump units, medium-yield ones – with electric progressive cavity pumps driven by permanent magnet motor, medium- and high-yield wells – with electric progressive cavity pumps or electric submersible pumps driven by permanent magnet motor, depending on the characteristics of the pumpedout oil fluid.

Traditionally, the assessment of changes in the technical condition of individual components and mechanisms of rotation machines in industry is associated with trends analysis of various vibration parameters. Over the decades of using vibration analysis, we have accumulated extensive experience in faults locating and critically determining, however, it is the assessment of the remaining life that regulates the timing of maintenance and repair activities that is of great practical importance. This article uses the example of a pump unit rolling bearing to consider approaches to predicting the growsup stage of defects based on the analysis of values of vibration acceleration levels. The stages of normal operation and other stages of bearing damage are highlighted, threshold values are calculated and dependences of changes in diagnostic criteria for each stage of the life cycle are constructed. The obtained dependencies show results that are similar in general, but individual in their values, therefore, the accumulation of possible scenarios of events allows creating a knowledge base for predicting the behavior of a mechanical system. The necessary tools for multifactor forecasting were implemented within the SAFE PLANT software platform (LLC SPA DIATECH, Moscow) and are successfully applied at Uralkali PJSC for monitoring the technical condition of all technological equipment and managing MRO processes by integrating the results of diagnostics and forecast assessments into the ORACLE corporate system.

The question of the use of vortex flowmeters with different versions of the flow body (TO) under operating conditions on the technological lines of pulp and paper production is considered. It is shown that when using different TO in vortex flowmeters, an error occurs in the working range of speeds (flow rates). The observed error arises due to a change in the Strouhal number (Sh) and is associated with the measurement method. In this case, the Strouhal number begins to depend not only on the TO used as a vortex generator, but also on the flow velocity and the concentration of the fibrous suspension. As the main comparative factor for the investigated TOs, the force action on the sensitive element (flexible electrode) located inside the TO was taken. The study was carried out in several stages using numerical modeling and experimental design method. According to the results of a numerical study, the dependence of the Strouhal number (Sh) on the flow rate (V) and the concentration of the suspension (c) is presented. In a comparative analysis of the deviation of the Strouhal number from the average values, it was revealed that MOT No. 1 has a minimal effect on the concentration of the suspension in the working range of flow rates (± 0.5%). This circumstance makes it possible to verify and test flow meters with such maintenance in conventional pouring installations. The analysis of the maintenance with respect to the signal-to-noise ratio shows that the purest signal is generated by the cylindrical maintenance (maintenance No. 3), and maintenance No. 2 and No. 1 have noticeably large noise. The differences are explained by the absence on the surface of a cylindrical TO of extra protrusions, faces, which leads to a smoother flow of a suspension around its surface, as well as to a decrease in internal spurious noise.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse service quality in the automobile maintenance and repair industry. A conceptual structural model is developed to investigate the impact of service quality, perceived service fairness and convenience on customer service satisfaction. The impact of service satisfaction and brand trust on word of mouth (WOM) is also explored, and the study assesses the mediating effect of customer service satisfaction on the relationship between service quality and WOM. Design/methodology/approach Data from a questionnaire-based survey of 259 users of automobile maintenance and repair centres were analysed using covariance-based structural equation modelling. Findings The findings indicate that service quality dimensions (reliability, responsiveness and empathy), perceived service fairness and convenience are positively associated with customer service satisfaction, and that service satisfaction and trust positively influence WOM. The findings support the mediating effect of service satisfaction on the relationship between reliability and responsiveness and WOM. Research limitations/implications The study’s main limitation is the cross-sectional design, which limits the generalisability of the findings. Practical implications To ensure customer satisfaction and generate trust and WOM, automobile maintenance and repair service centres should improve reliability, responsiveness and empathy, as well as perceived service fairness and convenience. Originality/value The study demonstrates that the reliability and responsiveness dimensions of service quality are the most significant predictors of customer service satisfaction in the automobile maintenance and repair industry.

Stem cells guarantee tissue repair and regeneration throughout life. The decision between cell self-renewal and differentiation is influenced by a specialized microenvironment called the ‘stem cell niche’. In the tooth, stem cell niches are formed at specific anatomic locations of the dental pulp. The microenvironment of these niches regulates how dental pulp stem cell populations participate in tissue maintenance, repair, and regeneration. Signaling molecules such as Notch proteins are important regulators of stem cell function, with various capacities to induce proliferation or differentiation. Dental injuries often lead to odontoblast apoptosis, which triggers activation of dental pulp stem cells followed by their proliferation, migration, and differentiation into odontoblast-like cells, which elaborate a reparative dentin. Better knowledge of the regulation of dental pulp stem cells within their niches in pathological conditions will aid in the development of novel treatments for dental tissue repair and regeneration.

Improving processes in a company starts from a deep knowledge of the current context, of the needs for improvement and of the objectives to be satisfied. Sometimes, traditional processes can benefit from a techno-organizational innovation that changes the way of work by introducing new routines and solutions. The service industry related to maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) is characterized by performance linked with the knowledge about the components involved. The emerging technologies and the need for enhanced competitiveness has led to transform and innovate this kind of industry, introducing changes in organizational and technological aspects. MRO processes are characterized by high variability, caused by the uncertainty about the arrival status of a part to be maintained and the intervention needed. The management of MRO processes is, thus, one of the most important challenges for the research community. This paper aims to describe the result of a study carried out by university researchers and industrial engineers of an aerospace company. The proposed solution, the applied approach and expected impacts and benefits are described in the paper in order to lead future activities in the managerial and academic fields.

One of potential application for Cold spray process is dimensional restoration or tooling repair like chipped area, if the defect exceed repairable limit that provided by OEM, that part considered scrap. Cold spray can provided environmental friendly solution to thick deposit for dimensional restoration or tooling repair without creation heat affected zone. There is no application yet of this repair technology in Malaysia and on top of that,re-use of material will contribute to cost saving and in-haze the environmet.

It utilizes a common corporate database to store and retrieve information and to generate timely reports for the management. By focusing on system throughput and overall cost, unnecessary internal completion between cost centers can be avoided, resulting in fewer delays and resource overloading.

The increasing need for maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) organizations to meet customers’ demands in quality and reduced lead times is key to its survival within the aviation industry. Furthermore, with the unpredictability in the global market and difficulties with forecasting characteristic of the MRO industry there is an increased need for the re-evaluation of the operation models of organizations within this sector. However, severe economic turmoil and ever-increasing global competition introduce the opportunity for the adoption of a resilient, tried, and tested business operation model such as ‘Lean’. In order to understand this concept, its long-term viability, and its application within the aerospace MRO sector fully, this paper presents the state-of-the-art in terms of the adoption of Lean within the MRO industry by carrying out a systematic review of the literature. This paper establishes the common perception of Lean by the MRO industry and the measurable progress that has been made on the subject. Some issues and challenges are also highlighted including the misconceptions that arise from the direct transference of the perception of Lean from other industrial sectors into the aerospace MRO industry. The ‘enablers and inhibitors’ of Lean within the aviation industry are also discussed. This paper exposes the scarcity of the literature and the general lagging behind of the industry to the adoption of the Lean paradigm and thus highlights areas where further research is required.

The toxics release inventory (TRI) was mandated as a result of the enactment of the Emergency Planning, Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) of 1986. Conceived largely in response to the Bhopal, India disaster in 1984, EPCRA was designed to compel state and local government to plan for unanticipated environmental excursions of hazardous chemicals. The TRI has evolved into a significant tool for regulatory agencies and public interest groups to use in assessing toxic chemical releases to the environment and, by inference, for use as a local indicator of environmental quality. An analysis of the TRI is limited almost exclusively to comparison of the annual discharge of pollutants to different media from year to year. The validity of this type of analysis has been seriously questioned as it fails to address even superficially the toxicity, persistence, and exposure factors arising from the reported releases. This paper explores the use of an adaptive method of scoring the chemical releases taking into consideration human and environmental toxicity and the potential for exposure. The relative risk of typical TRI emissions from the ship building, repair, and maintenance industry are scored and compared to other sources of TRI emissions. A software program for use by the industry to do self-scoring was developed by the Environmental Resources and Information Center (ERIC) at the University of New Orleans

Purpose – Implementation of lean manufacturing is currently performed in the production industry; however, for the airline maintenance service industry, it is still in its infancy. Indicators such as work in process, cycle time, on-time performance and inventory are useful indicators to measure lean implementation; however, a financial economic perspective taking fixed assets into consideration is still missing. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to propose a method to measure lean implementation from a fixed asset perspective for this type of industry. With the indicators, continuous improvement scenarios can be explored by value stream discrete event simulation. Design/methodology/approach – From literature, indicators regarding asset specificity to measure lean implementation are found. These indicators are analysed by a linear least square method to know if variables are interrelated to form a preliminary model. The indicators are tested by value stream-based discrete event simulation regarding continuous improvement scenarios. Findings – With the new found lean transaction cost efficiency indicators, namely, turnover, gross margin and inventory pre-fixed asset (T/FA, GM/FA and I/FA, respectively), it is possible to measure operation performance from an asset specificity perspective under the influence of lean implementation. Secondly, the results of implementing continuous improvement scenarios are measured with the new indicators by a discrete event simulation. Research limitations/implications – This research is limited to the airline maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) service industry regarding component repair. Further research is necessary to test the indicators regarding other airline MRO service companies and other sectors of complex service industries like health care. Practical implications – The lean transaction cost efficiency model provides the capability for a maintenance service company to simulate the effects of process improvements on operation performance for service-based companies prior to implementation. Social/implications – Simulation of a Greenfield process can involve employees with possible changes in processes. This approach supports the adoption of anticipated changes. Originality/value – The found indicators form a preliminary model, which contributes to the usage and linkage of theories on lean manufacturing and transaction cost theory – asset specificity.

Augmented reality is the integration of digital information and user’s real life environment. It overlays virtual information on top of existing environment to user’s perception towards the reality. Technicians and engineers in automotive industry at workshops today have mountains of data and information for diagnostics and repair. The worker must search for the information, and then manually check to see if he can assess the problem and repair what is not functional. Worker must refer to a printed drawing of the testing body, with the inspection parts marked on this drawing. Augmented reality application is proposed to replace these conventional references to eliminate their disadvantages. The objectives of this paper are to develop an augmented reality applicationto and evaluate the effectiveness of augmented reality application developed. This kind of digital transformation, which is driven by the Industry 4.0 initiative, not only affects the individual manufacturing assets, but the involved human workforce, as well. Since human operators should be placed in the centre of this revolution, they ought to be endowed with new tools and through-engineering solutions that improve their efficiency. In addition, vivid visualization techniques must be utilized, in order to support them during their daily operations in an auxiliary and comprehensive way. Towards this end, we describe a user-centered methodology, which utilizes augmented reality (AR) and computer vision (CV) techniques, supporting low-skilled operators in the maintenance procedures. The described mobile augmented reality maintenance assistant (MARMA) makes use of the handheld’s camera and locates the asset on the shop floor and generates AR maintenance instructions. Through the literature review process, it was found that top management support, stakeholders, key factors competency, acceptance, risk management, project plan monitoring, and effective communication are among the critical factors identified. Referring to a completed project, this research showed that project progress was in two dimensions in a maintenance context, which this research classifies as a successful micro and macro project. The macro viewpoints of project success mean the organizational stage of the project must be recognized and accomplishment relies on the consumer or collaborators to share. The micro perspective of project success can help to manage a project in small levels and is normally alluded to at the finishing line of the project. The summary result for the 4 hypotheses tested, all of them were significant. The result obtained clearly expressed all of the dependent variables have positive influences on project success in MRO aircraft in the Malaysian aviation industry. This research also demonstrates through trial and error that project key factors’ competency and project mission are critical factors in influencing the micro-project success and as well for macro project success, top management support and project mission are two main critical factors.

All buildings require Repair and Maintenance (R&M) in their life cycle period. However, if R&M activities are not carried out properly, deterioration will occur, service life of buildings will be reduced, and maintenance costs will increase. Hence, selecting the appropriate R&M methods is pivotal, especially for developing countries, such as Iran, which are featured by highly constrained resources. The present study aims to identify and prioritize the main criteria for selecting the suitable R&M methods for Commercial Buildings (CBs), which is considered as a profound challenge for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction/Facility Management (AEC/FM) industry. A total of 20 senior experts in the AEC/FM industry and CBs in Iran were invited to participate in a Delphi survey to solicit their perceptions and opinions on the selection criteria. The total number of individual criteria identified is 16, which are further divided into five categories: human resources, flexibility and technical capability, risks, cost of maintenance, together with facilities and technology. Then, the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) technique was applied to prioritize the identified criteria. Among the 5 main selection criteria, the cost of maintenance is the most important criterion for selecting appropriate R&M methods for CBs whereas the criterion of human resources (HR) was recognized as the least important.

Purpose With the increasing demand for high-quality economical and sustainable historic building repair and maintenance (R&M) allied with the perennial problem of skills shortages (project management (PM) and on-site practice) investment in new technologies becomes paramount for modernising training and practice. Yet, the historic R&M industry, in particular small- and medium-sized enterprises have yet to benefit from digital technologies (such as laser scanning, virtual reality and cloud computing) which have the potential to enhance performance and productivity. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative participatory action research approach was adopted. One demonstration project (Project A) exhibiting critical disrepair, showcasing the piloting of a five phased digitised “process-wheel” intended to provide a common framework for facilitating collaboration of project stakeholders thereby aiding successful project delivery is reported. Five semi-structured interviews were conducted with industry employers to facilitate the process-wheel concept development. Findings Implementing only Phase 1 of the digitised “process-wheel” (e-Condition surveying incorporating laser scanning) resulted in an estimated 25-30 per cent cost and time savings, when compared to conventional methods. The accrued benefits are twofold: provide a structured standardised data capturing approach that is shared in a common project repository amongst relevant stakeholders; inform the application of digital technologies to attain efficiencies across various phases of the process-wheel. Originality/value This paper has provided original and valuable information on the benefits of modernising R&M practice, highlighting the importance of continued investment in innovative processes and new technologies for historic building R&M to enhance existing practice and in form current training provision. Future work will focus on further piloting and validation of the process-wheel in its entirety on selected demonstration projects with a view of supporting the industry to digitise its workflows and going fully digital to realise optimum process efficiencies.
