Der volle Inhalt der QuelleWrestling is a play of strength between two antagonists who aim to master each other in a hand-to-hand opposition. The principle of this activity is fairly simple and well known in a majority of cultures and civilizations. It can be found in different elaborated forms. Wrestling symbolizes an imaginary representation of the fundamental opposition in mythology or acts as a ritual challenge in which the outcome foreshadows the collective wealth. Each wrestling style corresponds to one culture’s definition of the Strength concept, which takes into account an ideal imaginary, and a subtle construction of practical knowledge in a consistent and stimulating rules system. In addition to a universal presence and local original practices, we can easily notice similarities between styles and a wide set of common characteristics. It illustrates and implies a long-term diffusion. Elaborated forms have a steady geographical distribution, which corresponds to the roads of cultural circulation. Along the Silk Road styles spread out while they gradually evolved and grew apart. On the “Celtic Road” they experienced a complex History of identification and meeting that influenced the synthesis of international styles.Wrestling is an elementary and flexible system that has been deeply developed in more complex forms and spread out along the culture roads. This long-term progression illustrates the cultural character of sport and shows how its rooting and diffusion contribute into enriching the sport construction

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe undertaken study is articulated in three parts : - the first part established the fact of bulgaria as a land of passage and accounter. Various kinds of travellers crossed the country (men, goods, ideas, knowledges ans believes). Most of them have their stone to the bulgarian construction to become what it is today - the second part shows that these travellers, during their transit did not just only pass by, their transit through bulgaria did impress them deeply before continuing their trip. These situations gave the country a certain share in the building of eurasian civilisations - the third brings up the vital question of the remains of bulgarian past glory (evocated in the two first parts). The questions is very actual with the changes in the east and the vital need od national cohesion for the rebuilding of the country

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleRelying on my personal artistic practice, this thesis analyzes the identity, origin, the value and the place of the "band" in the art in weaving through the old Silk Road. The analysis of my artistic creation, my culture, my multiple identities and my influences in the light of the legacy of the Silk Road and the road of the creation. The crossing of the Silk Road is structured around four themes : the meeting, contact. The crossing and the border. The research led me on a messianic trip, in the aim of finding answers to the questions that concern me : how the Silk Road influences artistic creation, is it a source of creativity? How can it be in the works of contemporary artists? How it emerges on my artistic creation? To answer these questions, I presented my band as a figure, which binds me to my multiple origins. In the first chapter I will analyze the concept of identity through the portraits of the band, then I will look into the notion of border visible and invisible. In the third chapter, I will analyze the touch, the taste and the crossing with the Silk Road. Finally, I will examine the context of interior landscapes and I will try to demonstrate the hidden legacy as well as the secrets of the local art impregnated in the culture of our region through crosses and cultural mixes

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAs a preliminary of an associated project this thesis intends to make a modest contribution to the unesco project launched within the framework of the international decade of cultural development : integral study of silk roads - roads of dialogue. In the general perspective of the significance of the silk roads in the history of human civilization the thesis will endeavour to re-evaluate the cartographic representation of sri lanka in relation to the accounts of silk road travellers. In doing so it will examine initially the historical cicumstances in which sri lanka entered into the main stream of the silk roads and the dialogue established between her and silk road travellers who visited the island since the earliest recorded contacts of the pre-christian times up to the later middle ages. Finally it will seek to determine the contribution she made to the development of human civilization through the dialogue of exchange in cultural values, philosophical and religious ideas etc. . . , to which geographic and cartographic literature bear witness. As an island advantageously situated in the centre of an important sea route lying across the indian ocean, sri lanka has been a haven of silk road travellers for many centuries coming from three distinct directions : the mediterranean world, lands of the arabs, and far eastern china

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn the international and national institutions policies information and communication technologies are introduced as an infallible tool to reduce spatial heterogeneity and more to be the base of the growth of the developing countries. However, the study of the telecommunication networks in india stress that it reproduces the wealth and other infrastructure distribution disparities. With the aim to understand the fact and to determine what really are the dynamics the use of means of communication have to be studied in the context of an activity which products are strongly material. The study of the use of different means of communication by businessmen of the silk trade network in bangalore (karnataka, india) shows that the size and the commercial orientation of the firm are determinant to explain the intensity of the use of means of telecommunication and of the number of means in the firm. Traditional means of communication are still very used, particularly face to face meeting. Moreover the diffusion of the internet as a tool to do electronic commerce is motivated by the aim conquer the international market but the real use of web sites do not cause very much enthusiasm

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe specificity of sogdiana is apparent as of the 4th c. Through the emergence of a mosaic of small autonomous principalities and city-states which easily integrate nomadic turkish and hephthalite tribes which settled there. The variety of forms of buddhism -hinayana, mahayana and tantrism- is a reflection of this feudal system in which religious practices are adapted to local circumstances creating different types of foundations : foundations of gandharan type monasteries (adzina tepe, 7th-8th c. ; ustur mullo, 4th-6th c. ), city monasteries (dal'verzine tepe, 4th c. ; kalai kafirnigan, 5th-7th c. ), city sanctuaries (kafyr kala, 7th c. ; temple ii of pendzikent, 5th c. ; kuva, 7th c. ), chinese type foundations (temple i of ak besim, 7th c. ; krasnaja recka, 7th c. ; klucevskij, unexcavated) and private chapels (kuev kurgan, 5th c. ; pendzikent, 5th-7th c. ). The materiel consists of sculpted and painted clay architectural decor in fragmentary condition and of locally produced or imported objects of worship. The representations of buddha correspond to the gandharan prototype. The jatakas do not seem to be illustrated whereas there are representations of the thousand buddhas (adzina tepe and kafyr kala) introduced by the mahasamghika sect of the lokottaravadin who deny the historic existence of buddha and emphasize the image of transcendent "otherworldly" buddha. Buddha is depicted surrounded by numerous gods and devotees : indra and brahma, bodhisattvas, devatas and donor monks or lay persons. Sculpted "attack of mara" is a favorite theme in adzina tepe and kuva ; in kuva are also depicted terrifying blue divinities typical of tantric buddhism. Small locally produced objects of worship are primarily of clay : t'sa t'sa, there are also pottery reliquaries, small terra-cottas and bronze plates with openwork designs. Objects imported from gandhara, kasmir and china (relieves, statuettes and stele) show the close ties which existed between sogdiana and these regions. The iconographic relationship outlined throughout this work with the afghan sites of hadda is expressed in temple ii of pendzikent which has been buddhist in the 6th c. Before becoming a setting of dramatic presentations in the 7th c

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe main ideas of this thesis come from realities in China. The main objective ofthis thesis is trying to offer some suggestions for cities in China by learning fromFrance, on the topic of planning and implementation of large-scale urbandevelopment projects. Understanding the background, mechanism and policy ofurban planning in developed countries may help to cope with problems in ourcountry and then to better construct Chinese cities. Firstly, the dissertation defines the basic concepts, contents and framework of large-scale urban development projects. The origin of problems and difficulties in large-scale urban development projects is then discussed. Based on empirical study, the dissertation analyzes some typical large-scale urban development projects in France and then evaluates them. In modern society, planners should consider many uncertain indicators in urban development. They should also be effective in regulation of space and coordinate conflict of interests in large-scale urban development. The dissertation raises a basic theoritical framework in those three aspects and explores how French largescale urban development projects cope with these challenges. By three optimizing routes which are reforming of land-use planning, strengthen regulation of urban space and improvement of coordination mechanism, the planning and implementation of large-scale urban development project in France have been optimized. By continuous reforming, adjustment and improvement, many French large-scale urban development projects successfully finished the planning objectives. The social, economic and environment effects have also been well embodied.PLU (Plans Locaux d’Urbanisme) has been studied for the reform of land-use planning. Le "cahier des charges "and the role of the "Architect Coordinateur" have been analyzed for the regulation of urban space. ZAC (Zone d’Aménagement Concerte), SEM (Société d’Ecoonomie Mixte) and public participation institution have been studied in aspect of coordination institution. Based on comparativestudy of situation in China and successful experience in France, suggestionshave been made for optimizing Chinese large-scale urban development projects. The three optimizing routes are connected tightly, which means they influencethe course of urban construction together. Isolated route could not solve theproblems. Therefore, the dissertation suggests an ensemble optimizing route inChinese large-scale urban development projects. The reform of urban planningand implementation institution should improve land-use planning, regulation ofurban space and coordination mechanism all together. The urban planning andmanagement system should be in a direction of integrative improvement

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAmong the many consequences of the formation of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, one of the most significant was the emergence of a truly integrated and interconnected Eurasia. Under the aegis of the Mongols, trade, cultural and religious exchanges between the different Eurasian civilisations intensify, and long-distance travel becomes more and more common. The first Western travellers thus reach East Asia. This is the case of John of Plano Carpini and William of Rubruck, who both travel to Mongolia, as well as of Marco Polo and Odoric of Pordenone, who spent years in China. Their travel accounts testify to the Latin west’s encounter with a wide, complex world, about which until then almost nothing was known. Yet, in the very same period, the Persianate world came to have even closer ties to East Asia. Literary works such as ʿAṭā Malik Juwaynī’s History of the World Conqueror and Rashīd al-Dīn’s Universal History testify to their efforts to integrate this space into the mental geography of Persianate intellectuals. Drawing on these sources, as well as to a wider corpus of Latin, French, Italian, Arabic and Persian works on East Asia of different genres, from travel literature to historiography and geography, a comparative study of the representation of this space in the Latin West and in the Persianate world in the Mongol period can be undertaken. The dissertation thus discusses the Western and Persianate representation of East Asia in fields as diverse as geography, religion, languages, and urban and civil life

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe Lyon silk merchants, the Soyeux, have always sought to supply their Fabrique with various types of raw silk, in order to create the rich fabrics that contributed to the prestige of their city. During the XIXth century, Lyon became the most important, world-wide producer of luxury silks, thus playing a primary role in the national. These traders, for centuries, had travelled the silk routes tot the Far East. This thesis is the history of the special ties that the Soyeux and their networks established with China and Indochina. The study starts in 1843, when France established diplomatic relations with imperial China and envisaged installing themselves in Indochina. It ends in 1906 just as regional interests dilute into the national economy and the silk industry no longer occupies a primordial place in the local industry. This study traces how, from the Monarchy of July to the Second Empire, a group of Liberals, influenced by the philosophy of Saint-Simon, had, in the context of their competition with the British, established their own silk route. A strategy that was taken up and adapted by their heirs: conservative Republicans, with political leanings towards the Centre Gauche. They associated themselves with the Moderate Republicans, the Ferryists and the Gambettists to push France to implant itself in the Tonkin and to use it as a springboard towards Yunnan and Sichuan. The Soyeux would develop a unique colonial doctrine and an active economic strategy. This breaks with the usual image of an overcautious French business community in the Asian markets and also with the idea that the Indochina conquest was the result of a series of rash decisions. During more than a half-century, in the China Sea, the Soyeux of Lyon would write one of the least known pages of economical and social history within the larger context of French diplomatic and colonial history

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn July 1990 Saudi Arabia was the last Arab state to establish diplomatic relations with China. Since then, the two countries have seen a remarkable rise in their energy and trade partnerships, with trade rising from dollars 500 million in 1990 to nearly dollars 74 billion in 2012. This rapid development was largely achieved through the increase in oil exports making China the largest customer of Saudi oil, while Saudi Arabia established itself as its main supplier. However, media coverage of the energy issues led to an increase in the analysis of this bilateral relationship through the oil prism which obscured the diversity of commercial, political, religious and cultural ties. This research, based on a 16-month field survey in Saudi Arabia, proposes through a multi-scale geopolitical analysis method to bring out the diversity of the actors and the stakes of this Saudi-Chinese relationship on an international, regional and national scale while systematically carrying out an analysis of Saudi centered perceptions

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleSilk is a biopolymer spun by several arthropods. This fibre is made of protein arranged in a semi-crystalline microstructure and has remarkable mechanical properties. The main axis of this thesis work concerns the comprehension of silk fibre formation. Bombyx mori silk has been used as a model. The protein component of B. Mori silk, named Fibroin, has been spun into a fibre in a microfluidic device designed to mimic the silkworm spinning apparatus. The silk formation process has been followed by synchrotron radiation scattering (SAXS and WAXS) and Raman spectroscopy. It starts with an aggregation phase. The size of aggregates is around 100 nm. Inside these particles, the Fibroin is compacted. This aggregation is followed by a phase of compaction of the aggregates. Later, within a few hours, the Fibroin undergoes a conformational transition from a mainly amorphous structure (Silk I) to the semi-crystalline structure characteristic of the natural fibre (Silk II). This process is proposed as a possible model of silk formation in vivo. The second axis of this work is dedicated to the investigation of the physical properties of natural B. Mori silk. Its resistance to high temperature is studied from a molecular, structural and mechanical point of view. The semi-crystalline structure of the fibre remains stable up to carbonization although its mechanical properties and the Fibroin's integrity are affected at lower temperature. The effect of high pressure on the fibre structure is also presented : throughout the pressure increase, the crystallites can compact slightly before their disorganization

Essay on the Fashion as frame of mind of the postmodernity" shows how, on the basis of sociology of the day-to-day, we can release a network of senses by analyzing the various courses of social actors as varied as the Valentino, Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent, Jean-Paul Gaultier, John Galliano dressmakers, or the sciptwriter of Russian ballets Leon Bakst. From the set of themes of the mirror and its various reflective points, our study revisits the topics of Narcisse, the witches, the "femmes fatales" and the Russian Ballet in France to show the various modifications which the Fashion underwent and to try to seize its frame of mind. Various diagrams of comprehension of the new sociological and psychological values enable us to refine our approach and to delimit another delimitation as regards semiological analysis and phenomenology of the phenomenon of Fashion and anti-fashion

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe purpose of this study is to develop innovative effects on silk due to plasmon resonance. For this, different synthesis pathways of pure gold nanoparticles and alloys with other noble metals have been considered: preliminary syntheses of nanoparticles through already known methods, followed by their incorporation on silk; and an in situ synthesis of nanoparticles directly on the silk. This second approach allowed us to identify two interesting effects: first, an iridescent effect of the dye (color change depending on the observation angle), due to the simultaneous formation on silk of plasmonic light-absorbing nanoparticles and light-reflective metal aggregates; second, an effect of concentrations addition by the pastes’ re-impression to achieve overlaying and gradient effects interesting for the industrial partners. After the preparation, storage and printing parameters’ study, the feasibility of such a process in industry and the reproducibility of the results have been validated. Some adjustments still need to be made in the case of a future industrialization

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis PhD work aimed to understand and recreate artificially a self-assembling mechanism involving capillarity and elasticity present in spider silk. The primary function of the micronic glue droplets that exist on spider capture silk is to provide the spider web with adhesive properties. These droplets play yet another role: the dramatic enhancement of silk mechanical properties, as well as the preservation of the integrity of the web structure. The localization of the buckling instability within the glue droplets, site of over-compression due to the capillary meniscii implies that under compression this special drop-on-fibre system behaves like a liquid, whereas under tension it has a classical elastic spring regime. Spiders have thus found a way to create liquid-solid mechanical hybrids. The first part of my thesis aimed to the characterization of natural samples, which allowed in the second part to build a completely artificial system that mimics the natural samples, through fabrication of centimeter-long micronic soft fibres. The simple addition of a wetting liquid droplet made for an effective system with mechanical properties quantitatively close to that of spider capture silk.Fine characterization of the created drop-on-coilable-fibre systems yielded very good agreement between experimental results and predictions from numerical simulations and a analogy with phase transition, especially for properties such as the threshold for activation, the existence of an hysteresis and the coiling morphology. All those results added up to the design of unconventional techniques in field such as metamaterials and micro-fabrication

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis studies the interaction between the French and the Chinese silk industries during the period between the 18th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The reconstruction of this history is based on the different perspectives reflected in the historical documents in both Western and Oriental languages, which concerned with the commercial relations and the technical and stylistic exchanges between the two industries. The first part deals with these two silk industries during the 18th century and the second part is concerned with the evolution of the French silk industry from the end of the 18th to the mid-19th century. During this period, even though the contacts between the two industries became minimal, the study of the Chinese silk technology continued in France, based on the Chinese documents in France. The third part tackles the introduction of European techniques to China during the period between the mid-19th century and the beginning of the 20th century

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleFibrous proteins (keratin, elastin, collagen, fibroin ...) make up to one third of the proteins ofmammals and birds. They are structural proteins with a protective and/or mechanical function. Silk appearsto be the ‘simplest’ model because it mainly consists of two small amino acids residues (alanine andglycine). Some silks have comparable or superior mechanical properties compared to those of syntheticfibres and could be used in technical applications (e.g. biomedical) if the variability of their properties canbe controlled. This work focuses on the structure of silks from: Bombyx mori (domestic silkworm)degummed or not, Nephila madagascariensis (wild spider, no sericin coating), GM Bombyx mori (includinga gene of Nephila) a recombinant spider silk 4RepCT (Escherichia Coli). Silk is analyzed by Ramanspectroscopy (and FTIR), uni-axial tensile testing, and also by the coupling of these methods. The analysisof the low wavenumbers region in Raman spectroscopy allowed the characterization of ordered regions of 2to 3 microns separated by about 60 microns. This is the first evidence of the heterogeneous structure ofsilk. Coupling with the uni-axial tensile test shows that these ordered regions are stressed under macroscopicdeformation, suggesting silk organization according to Prevorsek’s model, i.e. that the samemacromolecular chain belongs to both amorphous and ordered regions. The statistical study of themechanical properties of silkworm and spider silks shows great dispersion, but a good stability over time(decades). Genetic modification does not improve the fibres mechanical properties but a slight decrease intheir variability. Various strategies have been investigated to control the variability: bacterial production, solubilization of silk and films regeneration. The role of water in silk biosynthesis, as well as the effect ofvarious parameters (filtration, pH, drying ...) during the preparation of the films were studied. It wasconfirmed that the presence of protein aggregates promotes the organization in film and two types of filmswere prepared. The most amorphous ones have the most interesting mechanical properties, though only afew percent of those from the starting fibres. The fabrication of regenerated silk matrix compositesreinforced by silk fibres increases the strength and strain to failure. These initial results are encouraging forthe development of silk fibres/regenerated silk matrix composite materials

Over the past two decades, more than 200 million people in China moved from rural to urban areas. These migrants fled the countryside, which is regarded as an economic wasteland in perpetual stagnation that is locked by feudal traditions and peasant values, to the largest cities. They sought to be connected to a modern China, one that is marked by a booming economy and pronounced popular culture. These rural- to-urban migrants have formed the largest peacetime inland migration in history. Mobility is a socially produced motion that often bears ideologies. It is associated with a desire for progress, freedom, and opportunity. The massive inland migration in China demonstrates the tremendous social force that aims to overcome the outdated social strata. However, as migrants move, limitations on mobility emerge. The Hukou, the household registration system in China, is an institutional framework that has entrenched the social strata for ages. Records of births, marriages, and moves identify each person with a place. As soon as migrants move from their designated origins, immobility appears: welfare exclusion, job inequity, urban transit inaccessibility, to name just a few. This thesis proposes to study this condition of mobility, immobility and estrangement in the district of Minhang, Shanghai, where 1.5 million migrants currently live and work. Scooter, an emerging fast and cheap personal vehicle, is the protagonist in this story of migrants. Linking closely to migrants' life, scooters are not only their primary means of transportation but also their means of production. Its mobility empowers migrants to move beyond their territory, while its unique scale and flexibility links to rich spatial possibilities.

According to fracture mechanics, the strength could however be limited if the molecular orientation is not homogeneous along the fiber. We have studied the homogeneity of molecular orientation for silk fibers and synthetic fibers. The spinning process is certainly the key element in the formation of a fiber with excellent mechanical properties. To get a better understanding of this process, we have studied the effect of deformation on regenerated silk films of Bombyx mori. By using Raman spectromicroscopy and polarization modulation infrared linear dichroism, we were able to distinguish two phenomena, which are the formation and the orientation of β-sheets upon application of mechanical stress.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleEconomic pavements represent advantageous solutions, especially at the functional level, for local roads and access roads to resources. However, there are few tools to quantify their effects in order to support the technical decisions of managers. The project’s objective is to determine qualitatively and quantitatively the socio-economic advantages of laying an economic pavement on an unpaved roadway. Roads in question are low-volume roads, which represent more than three quarters of Canada’s road network. Three types of economic coatings are studied: chip seal, hot mix asphalt and microsurfacing. The increase of the rigidity granted by the waterproofing of the foundation as well as the surface cohesion is determined as a result of this study. The rigidity of the foundations is measured by in situ tests carried out with the dynamic cone penetrometer under different water conditions. Thus, a relative elongation of a lifetime is quantified by finite element deformation modelling with GeoStudio software coupled with an empirical prediction analyst of damage method. An analysis of these results makes it possible to conclude that the implementation of a bitumen emulsion based economic coating, 20 millimetres thick, allows the reduction of the water content in the foundation by at least 30% and increases the service life of the road from 58% to 75% depending on the type of load. A comparison of life-cycle costs is thus made between a pavement with a chip seal (layer of aggregates coated with bituminous emulsion) and an unpaved surface using realistic maintenance scenarios that are consistent with the Quebec context. Considering the construction’s costs, maintenance and use of these pavements: it is demonstrated that the implementation of a coating results in a financial gain. This gain depends on many parameters that are detailed. In this context of a large Quebec province where resources are far away, the race for development imposes effective and economically viable techniques to increase the mobility of human and material resources. This study shows that certainthin coatings make it possible to ensure structural stiffness of pavements, thus prolonging their service life while reducing the associated costs.
