AbstractDetrital terrestrial sediments preserved in near-shore marine basins bear distinctive geochemical identifiers that can be used to identify the on-shore sediment sources and sediment routing through time. Santa Barbara Basin (SBB), offshore of southern California, USA, contains a well-known, continuous, high-resolution Holocene flood record that can provide insights into the frequency and changes in on-shore sources across time for such events. Abstract Although marine brines are a significant component of pore waters in sedimentary basins, there are few geochemical studies of modern analogues of such systems, especially in siliciclastic settings. For these reasons, we chose the evaporite-associated siliciclastic sediments deposited in the salt flats of the Salina Ometepec, Baja California, for an integrated investigation of sediment, pore-water, and overlying brine geochemistry. Here, the detrital components include quartz, K-feldspar, plagioclase, chlorite, biotite, and smectite, and authigenic minerals are dominated by halite, gyp

Abstract The southern Baja California (Mexico) microplate has been rapidly moving away from the North America plate since ca. 12 Ma. This relative motion toward the northwest developed an oblique-divergent plate boundary that formed the Gulf of California. The rift-drift hypothesis postulates that when a continent ruptures and seafloor spreading commences, rifting on the plate margins ceases, and the margins start to drift, subside, and accumulate postrift sediments, eventually becoming a passive margin.
