In 1986 Polyakov published his theory of rigid string. I investigate the instantons associated with the consequent new fine structure of strings in four dimensional Euclidean space-time. I reduce the self-dual equation of rigid string instantons to a simple form and show that (p,q) torus knots satisfy the equation, thus forming an interesting new class of solutions. I calculate by computer the world-sheet self-intersection number of the first few such closed knotted strings and derive a very simple formula for the self-intersection number of a torus knot. Autocatalysis is central to the propagation of living systems and is widely agreed to have played a central role in the emergence of life on earth. Chemical systems which self-reproduce like living cells can offer insight into the transition from chemistry to biology. Self-reproducing micelles and vesicles, or physical autocatalysts, are an important class of autocatalytic chemical systems that have used to model the first living systems for several decades. The study of physical autocatalysis has been restricted to a limited set of reactions, and hindered by experimental difficulties precludi

My thesis analyses the oeuvre of the American writer Mary McCarthy (1912-1989), with the focus on the figure of the outsider looking in. McCarthy uses outsider figures in her texts as prisms through which distinctive historical moments as well as problems of gender, race and religion are studied against the backdrop of the changing climate of the American 'red' 1930s, the anxious '50s, and the late '60s torn by the Vietnam war. Examples of McCarthy's recurring protagonists are the New York Bohemian girl of the '30s in the predominantly male world marred by the Great Depression, the Jewish char

Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi minister of propaganda, once said that '... it [will] probably always remain one of the best jokes of democracy, that it provided its own mortal enemies with the means by which it was destroyed'. Was Goebbels right? Does democracy provide its enemies with the means to destroy it? Is democracy defenceless against anti-democratic ideologies? The assassination of the Israeli Prime Minister, the late Yitzchak Rabin, on 4 November 1995 triggered a public debate in Israel about the ability of the state to deal with anti-democratic agents endeavouring to alter a democratic s

The aim of this thesis is to explore the images of the self constructed by Florbela Espanca in her poetry, viewing the complexities of her work in the light of her difficult position as a woman writing in the early twentieth century and showing how this work challenges conventional ideas of womanhood. The first part of the study provides the necessary background to understand the poet's early career. Chapter 1 examines the emergence of women's poetry in Portugal at the turn of the century, showing how it provided a favourable context for her aspirations to become a writer. Chapter 2 focuses on

In this thesis I present a novel coarse-grained model of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The model represents single-stranded DNA as a chain of rigid nucleotides, and includes potentials to represent chain connectivity, excluded volume, hydrogen-bonding and base stacking interactions. The parameterization of these interactions is justified by comparing the model's representation of a range of physical phenomena to experimental data. In particular, the geometrical structure and elastic moduli of duplex DNA, and the flexibility of single-stranded DNA, are shown to be physically reasonable. Addition

In this thesis, I assess the prospects for reconciling content-externalism and crucial guiding intuitions about self-knowledge within two different frameworks, respectively. The first framework belongs to the prominent contemporary externalist, Tyler Burge. The second framework is built from central strands of thought in Ludwig Wittgenstein's later work. I argue that a tension between the basic externalist intuition and crucial guiding intuitions about self-knowledge arises within a Burgean framework which does not arise within a Wittgensteinian framework. I show that given Burge's views about

This thesis explores the psychological development of liminal characters in four late-twentieth-century British novels. Studies of Julian Barnes’s Flaubert's Parrot, A. S. Byatt’s Possession, Angela Carter’s Nights at the Circus, and John Fowles’s The French Lieutenant’s Woman, by using D. W. Winnicott’s transitional-objects theory and Jessica Benjamin’s intersubjective theory, show how characters who are little more than infants socially and psychologically attempt to transcend the transitional, liminal status defined by Victor Turner. Contemporary communitarians focus their critiques on liberal individualism and posit as a counterpoise to the self-sufficiency and priority of the liberal self their own conception of the self: the individ- ual-in-community. Selfhood, in their view, is inherently communal; one cannot know or define oneself, or be an individual, except in and through the community life in which each is raised. This thesis presents, in contrast to the liberal and communitarian conceptions, a third conception of the self built from developmental psychology the self as compound individuality. The self-assembly of structured particles into monodisperse clusters is a challenge on the nano-, micro- and even macro-scale. While biological systems are able to self-assemble with comparative ease, many aspects of this self-assembly are not fully understood. In this thesis, we look at the strategies and rules that can be applied to encourage the formation of monodisperse clusters. Though much of the inspiration is biological in nature, the simulations use a simple minimal patchy particle model and are thus applicable to a wide range of systems.
